Wanaka Creative Fibre Group are celebrating their 40 years of documented history (1977-2017) on the 8th November. The group may well have started earlier than this with the getting together of rural women to share camaraderie while creating the necessities of clothing and household items needed by their families. The group has had six different name changes from the original Wanaka Spinners and Weavers to today’s Wanaka Creative Fibre Group as skills and new materials developed. Originally the spinners produced yarns for knitting, crocheting, stitching, weaving, felting and dyeing whereas today we are blessed with a huge variety of spun wools, fibres and textiles to use in our projects. Consequently our range of activities has expanded and we now pursue many different skills. We create some wonderfully diverse items, e.g. needle felted animals, rag mats and bags,

weaving with or without a loom, felted garments and accessories, knitting and crochet. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. New members and observers are always welcome. Just watch for our message in The Upper Clutha Messenger’s Community Diary, and come along if you are interested. On Wednesday, 8th of November at our Ruby Celebrations we will be hosting a High Tea at the Wanaka Croquet Club Rooms, on the corner of Warren & Stone Streets, between 2pm and 4pm. We would love all those who have been part of our Creative Fibre journey to come along and join with us in celebrating our birthday. MAC Team Green is a small group of students who achieve more than they think possible. Meeting just one lunchtime per week over the years, they create structure and culture throughout the college in sustainability related issues.

• They choose a project that floats their boat. • They do some research about possible solutions, asking for external advice when needed. • They write an action plan which they submit to the Principal and Board of Trustees when funding is required. • When the plan is approved, they design posters, assemble presentations, write internal notices and use the school newsletter and their blog for their campaign. • Later, they measure the results, reassess as required, try differently when necessary and keep going at it, bringing the subject to the forefront of everyone’s minds. A good example is recycling, which is now a well established practice at MAC. In a year, the college has diverted eight tonnes of paper and cardboard from the landfill which earned

the school 32 trees planted by students on the college ground. Other achievements include solar panels installation on MAC roofs and becoming a Fairtrade college. New and exciting this year, Team Green has started taking samples of water from our ‘adopted’ Bremner outlet to monitor the lake water quality as part as the Touchstone initiative. This will continue next year. Team Green is looking for dedicated passionate students who want to make a difference. If this is you, you can join now or at the start of next year. For those wanting to take part, meet on the lakefront opposite The Lakebar at 10.15am. There is a $5 donation per dog and owner and SPCA dog bandanas will be for sale this year for $5 each.

All attendees are encouraged to bring some money for the raffle. It will be great to have a large turnout on a nice sunny day.
