MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A YOUNG PERSON The Family Works Buddy Programme currently has 12 local children matched with couples or individuals who share time, experiences and have fun together on a weekly basis. Buddies are matched according to shared interests, location, personality and needs. Wanaka Buddy Coordinator Sharon Bell is eager to hear from other adults who enjoy time spent with children and who would like to donate a couple of hours each week to a child aged between 4 - 12 years old who needs additional adult support or friendship. “As we live in a rural area, Wanaka children are often a long distance from extended family, so opportunities for encouragement

and guidance from another adult can make a wonderful contribution to their wellbeing,” says Sharon. Prospective buddy volunteers attend an initial training course covering communication skills, guidelines and how to build a positive relationship with a child. The Buddy Coordinator gives continuing support to adult volunteers as they become friends and good role models for their young buddies. This week we arrested a 21 year old Wanaka male for a number of house burglaries and a theft from a motor car. All of this crime occurred in the Plantation Road, Hillview Place and Hedditch Street area. Almost all of the addresses that were entered were insecure and entered while the occupants were asleep at night. Further charges may be pending as other complaints are received. I suspect that there are some house occupiers who have had no idea their houses have been entered. My staff and I believe Wanaka is still one of the safest places to live and visit in the world, but crime is all about opportunity and we can all reduce this by taking a few simple prevention steps. Please make sure your addresses are secure by utilising locks, make sure vehicles are locked and valuables are out of sight. You could also consider outdoor lighting. I wonder how many Wanaka people left their house and cars unlocked with the keys in them last night. From now on let us make it zero. Our second largest call for service over the last week has been vehicle crashes. We attended or had reported to us 4 on the Crown Range, three weather related where the vehicles have left the road and either rolled or hit a bank. Thankfully injuries have been minor. On Sunday there was a crash when a motorcyclist with a pillion passenger lost control of his motorbike, slid across the road and knocked two cyclists of their bikes. There were a number of injuries to all parties, again thankfully none life threatening. This is a timely reminder that even in summer this road can be a beast and needs respect. Please travel to the conditions and observe the speed advisory signs. We also attended another couple of crashes on Mt Aspiring Road, again with vehicles leaving the road, one involving a tyre blow out. Apart from that we received a report of theft of cash from a business, an historic burglary from the Eely Point location and dealt with a low key family dispute. The LANDSAR and Police SAR people were again busy this week, there were four incidents reported, three requiring helicopter lift outs. Have a safe week and remember our Holiday Road Policing Campaign is still running with the reduced speed tolerance.
