Aspiring Quilters is a local community group of quilters, with varying skills from novices right through to experienced sewers. The group get together regularly and put their skills to good use in supporting local causes. Members of the group donate their time and resources to help produce beautifully crafted handmade quilts that are donated to Plunket, and gifted to parents with newborns as play quilts or cuddly covers. Quilts are also designed for all age groups and donated to the Cancer Society for patients to use during their hospital stays and recovery at home, providing them with a little bit of comfort when needed the most. The group have also just recently hosted their first wine and cheese evening meeting which was introduced to encourage new members with family and work commitments who may be unable to attend daytime meetings. “Meetings are a chance for like-minded crafty locals to

get together as a group and share tips, techniques and ideas with each other. Each member gains a sense of satisfaction from the beginning of the creative process through to the completion and gifting of a unique piece of work. The group meetings provide an opportunity to work on individual projects, donated quilts, and to take part in regular workshops to learn new quilting techniques and improve skills”, said President, Sara Tither.

Biodynamic agriculture is a way of living, working and relating to nature. Based on common sense practices, a consciousness of the uniqueness of each landscape, and the inner development of each practitioner. It provides a holistic, economical farming system. Based on the philosophies of Rudolf Steiner, biodynamics works in harmony with nature’s rhythms, improves the quality of the soil, strengthens the natural immunity of land, plants and animals and embraces the health of the environment. This year, Central Otago was chosen to showcase some of the countries most extreme climates and diverse terrain. The perfect backdrop for the theme ‘Water and Light’. We have three main goals for our conference. One of these, as the Biodynamic Association mission states:

“Is to foster, guide and safeguard the biodynamic approach to agriculture, horticulture, forestry and animal husbandry in New Zealand.� Our second goal is to reach out to new individuals and groups who may be interested and offer them an opportunity to explore biodynamics in a friendly, open setting. Our third goal is to support the growth and development of the wider food and social change movements. In light of this, our presenters and keynote speakers are not just biodynamic folk. Many people are seeking to align their lives, their farming and gardening practices and their food buying, cooking, and eating practices with a deeper understanding of the earth. In this regard, we see this conference as an important bridgebuilding event. We have learned from our previous conferences that this combination of goals and audiences works very well together. It creates a

dynamic mix of people and perspectives that builds a powerful sense of community. bu7 1omv;uˆ-াom Ĺ‹ 0;_bm7 |_; v1;m;v Many Wanaka folk may be unaware that the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society (F&B) was established nearly 100 years ago. From early and somewhat modest beginnings, F&B is now actively involved in indigenous species and habitat protection through its 70,000 members and supporters throughout NZ. Since the recognised conservation needs in 1923, science and accumulated experience have clearly demonstrated that many of NZ’s native ecosystems and species have become degraded to a critical level. The F&B Central Otago Lakes Branch is a small,

active, and influential group that frequently “punches above its weight� in advocating, raising funds, and implementing conservation activities. These include field excursions, evening talks, tenure review inspections and reporting, rehabilitation programmes at selected sites and, for the last 20 years, predator trapping at Makarora. As part of the trapping programme, the branch is hosting Dr Rebecca Stirnemann during the week starting 26 June. Rebecca is the F&B mid-North Island Regional Manager and is widely recognised as an effective conservationist and environmental

advocate.
