MY COMMUNITY NEWS QLDC’s 10 year plan - have your say Do you ever think ahead ten years about where you’ll be and how you’ll get there? That’s exactly what elected members and staff at QLDC have been doing over the past nine months. Now it’s over to Upper Clutha residents and ratepayers to take a look at the draft Ten Year Plan and share their views. This plan sets the Council’s work programme for the decade that follows. This time the plan is bold. It needs to be to grapple with the significant growth challenges faced by each and every community in the Queenstown Lakes District. On the busiest day in 2028 our population is predicted to be almost 150,000. We need

to be ready for that. At capacity, we currently have one resident to every 34 international visitors. And while we all recognise the importance of tourism in our district, it’s equally important that we strike the right balance between meeting the expectations of the people that live here and those who visit. The draft plan proposes a work programme almost three times the size of anything the Council has delivered before, coming in at close to a billion dollars of capital investment over the next decade.

Leos fundraise for Allenby Park Project so QLDC was contacted to see what was on their wishlist that had not been included in grants. It was decided that the Leos would fundraise for a wheelchair accessible BBQ, picnic table and shelter - the first of its kind to be supplied in New Zealand.

About nine months ago the Leos asked “What can we do for the Lions International Centennial Legacy Project?” A children’s playscape was going to be developed in the near future on Allenby Park,

The Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions was approached to see if they would be interested in making this project a joint one with the Leos. The Wanaka Leos are grateful to the generous sponsorship from Edgewater Resort, who offered their old TV’s to be sold to help fund

the BBQ. Over the last 4 months 150 TV’s have helped to fund the accessible BBQ, together with other the events held by the Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions. Wanaka Leos are now planning for their next project, proposed by members to be to do with a local animal. Success for Wanaka SAR at the Lions Club 4WD Safari The Lions Club of Wanaka and Districts were proud to present Wanaka Search & Rescue with a cheque for $6000, the proceeds of a 4WD Safari held in January on West Wanaka Station. The Safari, with its stunning views over Lake Wanaka, was an outstanding success with a field of 47 vehicles. The drive concluded with a BBQ hosted by Wanaka Lions. We are very grateful to James ad Jonelle Cochrane of West Wanaka Station for the opportunity to run this event on their property. Bill Day, chairperson of Wanaka Search and Rescue, said, “Grateful doesn’t begin to cover it. Wanaka SAR depends entirely on grants and donations, so to get this kind of support from a community organisation like the local Lions Club is fantastic”. Wanaka SAR is one of

busiest ‘back country’ SAR groups in New Zealand and responds to about 50 callouts per year, with specialist alpine, river rescue, sub-alpine/bush, marine and dog teams. David Rule, Lions Club President said the club plans to make a 4WD Safari an annual event. This is just one of many projects we have planned for the coming year. We have a membership of 40 people, ready to pitch in to help with catering, firewood for the needy, and respond to a multitude of requests for assistance in the community. We are always looking for new projects and we have man power available with a vast array of skills including farmers, engineers, builders, stone masons , electricians. We are always on the lookout for new

Wanaka was a sea of green on Saturday night for those out celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Nearly everyone behaved and it was great to see people out enjoying the evening. To top it off, the Irish won the rugby in the early hours. Now a wee snippet of what’s been happening in Wanaka from a police perspective for the past week: Overnight on Thursday 15th March, a farm shed was burgled on Lake Hawea to Albert Town Road. An orange and red 250cc Suzuki Quad bike was stolen, along with a Honda XR 200 motorbike and a Husqvarna chainsaw. Of note, a member of the public reported a quad motorbike racing along Bell Street, Hawea, at 3.20am WKDW PRUQLQJ 7KH TXDG KDV WXUQHG OHIW LQWR 7LPV¿HOG Drive and the informant said it was not heard after that. Someone will have seen or heard this motorbike and if so please give us a call. Some great CCTV footage has been provided and we will be following these complaints up. Two drink drivers where stopped locally and processed for being over the legal breath alcohol limit. The sight of the week has to go to a male who was dropped into town from a wedding in the early hours. Police found him crawling on all fours vomiting in a carpark. I suspect the suit he was wearing will need to go to the dry cleaners. “It’s not what we are drinking, it’s how we are drinking” is a quote that comes to mind. It’s great how honest this community is when it comes to handing in found property. We have had a lot of found property handed in of late including some expensive items of jewellery. We would like to reunite these items with their owners. If you have lost something recently then it is worth coming to the station to check our records.
