This volunteer group from Central Otago and Mackenzie Country has been carrying out conservation work here since 2004, under agreement with the Department of Conservation. The objective is to enhance the outstanding natural open character of the snow tussock grassland, for its ecological and aesthetic values.

Core work is weed control and planting of snow tussocks grown from seed sourced in the Pass into degraded areas to assist natural recovery, and to assess the success of different planting methods. 2000 tussocks are being planted over the next 2 years.

Sweet Brier and Russell Lupins are a dominant landscape feature in the Longslip Creek and Lindis River valleys, especially when flowering in spring. The sweeping tussockland of the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve by contrast is markedly free of woody weeds and lupins, thanks to the efforts of the Lindis Pass Conservation Group.

We’re heading into the last ‘Light Up Wanaka’ event for the year but watch this space, next year promises to deliver more. The volunteer group of local business people are already in discussions with the Festival of Colour committee about being part of next April’s event. Light Up Wanaka member Mandy Enoka said the street festivals have successfully given people something to do on winter nights - with an economic EHQHÂż W WR EXVLQHVVHV “It’s been about town and visitors emerging,â€? she said. The October 6 event will be the last but next year the committee is looking at better aligning with school holidays, and throwing in a Christmas festival as well.

“It’s done more and gone further than we thought,â€? Mandy said. The group has been lobbying council for more street lighting, and this year 150 sets of fairy lights adorned the central business district. Light any festival, bigger is always better so any budding performers or artists wanting to be part of it should get involved. A third whitebait festival has been added to the West Coast’s tourism agenda. The Heartland World Heritage Hotel will host its ¿ UVW IHVWLYDO RQ 2FWREHU ZLWK UDFLQJ ¿ OOHWLQJ DQG even whitebait mingling in the lineup of entertainment.

General manager Tracey Dinan said Tourism West Coast decided to hold another festival, alongside Westport, Greymouth, and Karamea - which are all on in the same month. Local Economy: When I came to live in the region in 1976, farming was the predominant use for land and the main stay for the local economy. Farming, along with the invention of motorised vehicles had paved the way for essential roading, businesses and services. Non farming individuals and families shifted to the Upper Clutha to make a living, enjoy the peace and beauty and enjoy social and outdoor activities, when time allowed. People were able to access the lakes region to holiday, tramp, fish, hunt, pursue hobbies such as photography and businesses were created.

1967 was massive: Haast Pass road construction was completed linking our region to the West Coast. When I arrived to live at Makarora, the deer recovery industry was thriving. There were many helicopters from Franz Joseph to Wanaka flying very weighted with their cull of live or dead deer slung underneath. Tim Wallis was pioneering a successful industry and more people were arriving to the region to live and work. Tourism in Makarora was thriving for a tiny village in the mountains. The combo of farming, tourism and a larger community was well underway. The Jones’s bought the derelict Cardrona Hotel, Fleur Sullivan bought the old Oliver’s building in Clyde, and the beginning of another era to include delicious basic and gourmet food arrived. Wanaka’s airport was where the new road to Three Parks is currently being constructed opposite Mt Iron. Landing fees were $2. Very few roads were sealed. Footpaths were for cities. In the 1980’s Wanaka’s first walk through mall was created. ‘The Business Centre (now Checketts McKay) opened with Wanaka’s first two permanent law firms. The Millers operated a hovercraft beside the dinosaur park. Wanaka had one area school for aged 5 to school leavers. Then:- Wanaka went from one to two policemen. Wanaka Medical Centre went from one Dr Pezaro to two doctors. The Lee’s acted on their belief of a skifield on Mt Cardrona. Treble Cone changed ownership. Dippie created his first subdivision, Meadowstone, complete with paths, roadside trees, curb and channelling. Whoever would have thought. Mitre 10 and Placemakers came to town. MAC was built and outdoor pursuits became a study option. Parry’s 4 square shop was not big enough anymore. New World was built on land that was a large council owned carpark. Where the new Cardrona office is was also carpark. Deals were being done in council with no public consultation. Base is where a green area with picnic table was and the local cops home was behind it where motels and eatery are. Newspaper businesses popped up, real estate agents increased as did developers. Aspiring Medical Centre took us to two medical centres. Snow Farm arrived. Upgrades at TC and Cardrona were ongoing and foreshore and outdoor pusuit businesses increased for the growing number of tourists. And then, big news, Nationwide Amalgamation in 1989 saw Albert Town, Hawea, Luggate, and Makarora move from the Vincent County Council (now CODC) to join with Wanaka, Cardrona and Queenstown (QLDC). Tourism increased with sealing of roads, particularly Hawea to Haast in 1995 and the Crown Range in 2001. A small team of us had a vision for a recycling station when the new landfill in Queenstown was constructed in 1999 and in one year we raised $67.000, built the big shed and opened for business as Wanaka Wastebusters. Shania Twain and Mutt Lange bought Motatapu and Mt Soho Stations in 2005. Tenure review has since occurred for many of our high country stations, foreign ownership of them continues to occur as does conversion from crop farming to dairy farming. International flights into Queenstown continues to increase to include night flights, NASA releases massive research balloons from our perfectly located Wanaka Airport that has been planned to keep up with growth. In 2006 Heath suggested we build a sports centre. Like the Lake Wanaka Centre, The Community House and the rowing club building, the community had different views on location but ten years on the Wanaka Sports Centre has arrived. We now have roundabouts, modern St Johns, police, fire and SAR buildings, new schools, retirement village, dementia unit, big medical centre, more subdivisions and continued population growth. No widening yet of Mt Aspiring road. Council now has a 10 year plan reviewed 3 yearly, a annual plan, a 30 year infrastrcture plan and an asset management plan. In 2002 the community, together with council created Wanaka 2020. In 2003 Hawea, Luggate, Makarora and Cardrona did their 2020 plans. (all available on QLDC website). Time now for a 2050 plan. Fast forward: An aerial view shows farming is still the predominant use for the land. Pivot irrigators and dairy farming have changed the landscape. However, tourism is the growth factor creating infectious enthusiasm for people to want to live here so along with development at a rapid growth rate, with businesses to match. We have become a diverse community and my take is we want to be here for similar reasons because it is safe, beautiful and good for our souls. In seconds we can be on a track or road with instant gratification because of the clean air and what we see. I believe if we look after the environment and community, the economy will thrive. It is up to us to have a collective impact by thinking smart progress, sensible inclusive solutions and maximising positive outcomes for local goodness. Water is our most treasured resource. The recently formed groups involved in research of our water is a positive move. Children, youth and adults all matter to me as does water quality, parking, infrastructure, sports fields, affordable housing, libraries, public toilets and finding more ways for tourism to share funding essential infrastructure and services, a levy maybe. Council’s core function is to provide and maintain essential services and keep up with the growth. My job as your councillor is to help manage the impact growth has and keep costs under control. I understand governance, am financially literate and understand the importance of being responsible for council’s 80 million dollar annual operating budget. I have been involved in many significant positive projects for our region. I have worked in horticulture, office administration and community support services. I am a current Board of Trustee member for Wanaka Primary School and a Lake Hawea Guardian. I enjoy outdoor exercise and gardening, have four children, six grandchildren and live with partner Mal. I’m a capable team player, unafraid to speak out for what matters to you and will work in a proactive and accountable way to achieve smart progress. I am informed, motivated, committed, have the time for the job and will be a decisive force for you on council.
