How do we show appreciation for our Seniors? They offer us different perspectives, knowledge and skills, and we do our best by assisting them to live independently and for longer in the Upper Clutha. It is important that our seniors feel part of the community. Community Networks Wanaka has recently started a Companionship Service; pairing interested Seniors with other community members for social visits. As our town is far away from certain medical services, we help facilitate access to Dunstan Hospital and connecting on to Dunedin Hospital through Wheels to Dunstan transport service. We also act as a hub for visiting government services, and we can accept Work and Income (including superannuation)

forms, often saving a trip to Queenstown or Alexandra.

When driving around town is no longer an option, we can help with access to Total Mobility, subsidised taxi vouchers. We value connecting people both with each other and with tools that can help connect to distant family and services. Through IT training specifically for Seniors, we help them use technology that can make life easier (hopefully!). We value our Seniors as important contributors within our community. Aspiring Avalanche Dogs presents Sam Manzanza and the Afro Beat band Aspiring Avalanche Dogs (AAD) are currently fundraising for two Alpine Survival Kits (ASK) for their avalanche dog teams. Their fundraising event “BLACK DOG NIGHT 2” will be held on Saturday 25th February in the Hawea Flat Hall. Sam Manzanza and the Afro Beat band will be performing their infectious brand of ska, driving rhythms and spicy Afro beat with Robert Koffie Fugah on percussion and local talent: Black Lagoon, TeHight and Alpine Funk Line. Doors open at 6.30pm, there will be a bar offering local beers and wines, the Amigos tacos truck will be on site, there will also be an auction and spot prizes. AAD is a non-profit organization, registered as a Charity in 2009. Physically based at Treble Cone Ski Area over the winter months, their four avalanche dog teams work closely with TC ski patrol and management providing a rapid-response avalanche search dog service. Although based at Treble Cone Ski Area, they service the entire Southern Lakes region. Teams train year round and are assessed annually

by the NZ Police and NZLandSAR in order to maintain operational status. As a voluntary organization AAD rely entirely on sponsorship, community grants and fundraising activities to supply equipment and resources necessary to train and provide an operational service. These survival packs will be equipped with everything needed to create shelter and warmth in the hostile alpine environment of the Southern Alps. International research shows that tragically if an avalanche victim survives the initial trauma and is located, they are likely to succumb to hypothermia once exposed to the elements. Shelter and warmth are therefore as vital for the survival of these patients, as the ability to locate and excavate them. Walking the Miner’s Trial for PINC & STEEL Central Lakes Physio and friends are walking the Miner’s Trail, as part of the Motatapu event on Saturday the 4th March, to raise money for the Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust, to help fund access to cancer rehab for locals. PINC & STEEL provides support to people affected by cancer, helping them take their first steps on the road to recovery.

Well done to everyone who took part in Challenge Wanaka. It was a fantastic weekend and great to see so many people getting out and supporting the event. Good work by a member of the public who came and reported a suspiciously parked vehicle. It had, in fact, been earlier reported stolen. Police were able to reunite the owner and their vehicle. 3ROLFH UHFHLYHG UHSRUWV DERXW VRPHRQH XVLQJ DQ DLU ULĂ€H WR VKRRW URDG signs on Plantation Road. If anyone has any information regarding this please let the Police know. It is an extremely dangerous thing to be doing for a number of reasons. A foreign visitor was arrested after making a false statement to Police regarding the theft of their belongings. A common occurrence in Wanaka is the theft of bicycles. Locking bikes with a bike lock is a huge deterrent to opportunist thieves. The same goes for vehicles, even if you are leaving it for a short time - lock it. Look after your property. Police attended a number of Family Harm (domestic) incidents this week. Please look out for your family, friends and neighbours. Wanaka SAR were busy last weekend, managing two Personal Locator Beacon Activations for injured trampers and 2 river responses. One on the Matukituki River, where a jet boat had steering problems and collided with a bank, ejecting one of the occupants and another receiving minor injuries. Fortunately Wanaka River Journeys were nearby - they raised the alarm and managed to pull the injured party out of the water and ferryied both to ambulance staff. On the Clutha River some kayakers got into trouble after losing their paddles and getting stuck on the river bed beside a steep bank unable to move. Wanaka SAR utilised the services of Go Jet to locate and assist the party back to safer ground. Three drivers were spoken to and issued infringement notices after D PHPEHU RI WKH SXELF QRWLÂżHG 3ROLFH DERXW WKHLU PDQQHU RI GULYLQJ in Hawea. Another was issued an infringement notice after crossing the centre line and hitting a caravan that was being towed.
