Wanaka Girl Guides Girl Guides is again very active in the Wanaka area with numbers growing at Pippins, Brownies and Guides levels. The girls, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years, meet weekly on a Wednesday at the Scout Den, Eely Point. The girls take part in a range of indoor and outdoor based activities with the emphasis on participation, developing life skills and making a positive contribution to the community, which all see them working towards badges at each level. Highlights during the year include water based activities on the lake, camps at the Scout Den and the Hawea Community Centre, and an annual tramping trip which this year sees the Brownies and Guides tramping to Aspiring Hut for a weekend. During the month of March each year the girls are out and about selling the Girl Guide biscuits that we all know and love.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS A sing out to performers in their twenties The hunt is on for young performers in the late teens to 20’s age group who would like to take part in Barbarian Production’s community production ‘Sing it to My Face,’ a sing off between generations as part of this year’s Festival of Colour. If you are in your twenties and would like to get involved, music reading and professional singing experience isn’t necessary, just an interest in performance and community. The performance is based around generational divides and how we each see the world. Content is gathered by surveying the singers, taking those views and ideas and bringing them to the stage.

Written and directed by Jo Randerson, with Julian Raphael as Composer and Musical Director, the show pushes at the edges of both theatre and choral work – it’s powerful and surprising, revealing attitudes and issues that affect us all but many never speak about. If you have something to say, sing it to my face! Rehearsals start March 28th and those interested need to be available for evening rehearsals until the performance on 4th April. All went well there, he had lots of fun with this and said the kids were just awesome. The roads were certainly quieter this weekend with the reported 45,000 people through the gates at the very large A&P Show having gone home. It was great weather again for the Show and I don’t know how they organised that, but it made for a great weekend. Must have been the same person who organised the storm at 2 minutes past midnight on New Year’s Eve. There was a crash at the busy Albert Town – Lake Hawea turnoff. This was the result of someone failing to give way at the intersection. This intersection causes some issues for motorists and we need to ensure that we follow the arrows that are painted on the road. We need to be mindful that when turning at this intersection we are going into WKH FRUUHFW ODQH DOO WKH ZKLOH DOVR EHLQJ PLQGIXO RI WKH RWKHU WUDI¿F that is around us. We all make mistakes from time to time but if we are considerate of other drivers, be patient and ensure we are in the correct lane, it makes our roads safer for all who travel on them. Earlier in the week a drink driver got themselves an Infringement Notice which means they blew between 250 and 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. Over 150 for a youth (under 20 years old) and over 400 for an adult - and you’re off to court. :H KDG 4XHHQVWRZQ 5RDG 3ROLFLQJ 6WDII KHUH RYHU WKH ZHHNHQG DQG no drink drivers were processed. Very well done to those who got taxis, walked or had a friend who had their turn at driving. Look after those friends as they are your life line for the night. A car was damaged in Coromandel Street and a hand bag was taken from a CafÊ on Ardmore St. Both are senseless acts that have caused a VLJQL¿FDQW DPRXQW RI VWUHVV IRU WKRVH YLFWLPV ZKR KDYH EHHQ ZURQJHG I encourage anyone who knows anything about these offences to let us know here at the police station.
