After operating as a community initiated incorporated society for 13 years, in 2013 Wanaka Wastebusters became a not for profit company, Wanaka Wastebusters Ltd. The desire to retain a sense of grass roots connection to the ethos and philosophy behind the initial formation of WWB, resulted in the formation of The Friends of Wanaka Wastebusters (FOWWB). In other words, Wanaka Wastebusters is the company and you, as members of the community, are the shareholders.

FOWWB want the community to be involved. FOWWB comprises a small band of people who hold the shares (having no monetary value) on your behalf, as part of their role in supporting the guiding principles of Wanaka Wastebusters.

Major changes proposed for District Plan The QLDC has recently publicly notified far-reaching changes to the rural section of the District Plan. Among other things these include: x Economic and farming matters are given greater weight in the plan demoting the importance of landscape protection compared with the existing plan. x The proposed plan weakens landscape protection in the much of rural area despite growth pressure where the Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population is predicted to rocket from 30,700 today to 55,000 in 2031. x Residential and farm buildings in rural areas will have weaker controls over their adverse effects. x Contentious landscape categorisation lines are included in the plan.

Some changes are positive and are supported by the Society. For instance: x Seldom read text that complicates the existing plan will be removed. x Urban Growth Boundaries are proposed to control urban sprawl. x Public access is promoted.

Overall, if the changes to the District Plan are enacted, subdivision and development in rural areas, including in some Outstanding Natural Landscape, will become easier.

Permitting more subdivision and development in the rural landscape threatens the tourist industry which relies on these landscapes. The tourist industry brings in $1.4 billion to the District and is forecast to grow rapidly.

The Upper Clutha Environmental Society believes the existing plan works well in terms of landscape protection and only minor changes are needed to improve it. The Society will attend Council hearings for the District Plan.

Make a personal submission by October 23rd The Society has blank District Plan submission forms available via email. We also have a submission form available that simply opposes the weakening of landscape protection in rural areas.
