Three months, A Bicycle, One Very Large Landmass Written by: Kathryn Phillips Earlier this month Wanaka based adventurer Kathryn Phillips embarked on an epic three month bicycle journey, the 2018 China Traverse. A 6000+km journey across the landmass of China on a bicycle, all in aid of World Bicycle Relief, a global non-profit organisation that mobilises people in developing countries through The Power of Bicycles. Kathryn, a business analytics consultant, writer and PHD student who lives in Wanaka, became an ambassador for World Bicycle Relief earlier this year, having previously raised the cost of 100 bicycles for the charity in 2016 with the #100ascentsfor100bicycles challenge. While Kathryn has undertaken a number of cycling adventures, including riding through the intimidating mountain passes of the Indian

Himalaya and across the acrid deserts of Chile, the 2018 China Traverse will be a significant jump off the deep end. “It is my first adventure where our ride will be unsupported, unguided, and totally self-sufficient” Kathryn said. Kathryn began her journey in Kashgar, China in early October, joining Rebecca Wardell (of Lake Hawea) and commencing their journey across this sizeable landmass, racing the arrival of winter, and all in an attempt to raise $14,000 (AUD) for World Bicycle Relief. The pair will ride to Kunming, before Kathryn turns east towards the ocean, aiming to culminate her journey in Hong Kong and be back home in time for Christmas. Again another busy week for Wanaka Police which started out with our staffs continued attempts to reunite many of our locals with the stolen property we have recovered from the recent burglary offending. Police received a report of theft of copper cabling after $4,500.00 of cable was stolen from a contractor’s yard on Ballantyne Road. We dealt with a tourist who was unable to keep his car on the Cardrona Ski Field access Road, thankfully no one was injured in the incident. Over the weekend we are disappointed to say a further two people have been apprehended for excess breath alcohol. Remember the lower 250 microgram level, as no one wishes to collect 50 demerit points. Unfortunately one offender was a learner driver. We are always actively checking for excess breath alcohol offending and restraint, use of cell phones and speeding.
