Buddies are matched according to shared interests, location, personality and needs. It will hopefully be a case of third time lucky for organisers of The Ruby swim this weekend. Co-organiser Eddie Spearing said numbers were looking good for this Saturday’s big race, and they were expecting between 250 and 300 swimmers to enter. “It is similar to last year where we doubled our numbers in the last week,� he said. The inaugural race was meant to start in 2015 but the wind was so strong that the only winner on the day was the lake. Last year they had special ‘rings’ made for the fastest man and woman in the main 2.5km Ruby swim, and this year there are also cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters. “Last year we had winner takes all, but people have asked that 2nd and 3rd get something as well,� he said. The Big Ruby (3.8km - 2 laps of Ruby Island) is the ideal practice race in the build up to Challenge Wanaka - happening in just under a month. The Ruby (2.5km - 1 lap of Ruby Island), is described as the centrepiece event of the day, incorporating the ‘pro elite’ category race and age group swimmers. Eddie said this year they have a much more reliable weather forecast for predicting conditions on the day - through yr.no - a Norway based website.

Emma Dixon is living her dream and she loves helping others fulfil theirs. Specialising in bridal makeup services, her Scandinavian-inspired beauty lounge in Ardmore Street is the perfect place to pamper yourself and friends on the day before your wedding, for a birthday, baby shower, or just to treat yourself. “I just want it to feel like home - in a lounge, rather than clinical,” she said. The busy mother of three has been a beauty therapist for 13 years and started

from her home-based studio, before moving into downtown Wanaka in May 2016. It hasn’t all been plain sailing. Emma has worked hard to build the business from the ground up, juggling 2 jobs and 2 kids. Most of her work was built through word-of-mouth and reputation, now Emma has at least 500 regular clients. “It wasn’t expected to expand so quickly,” she said. The turning point for Emma was employing beauty therapist Lucy Skye McAdam to help run her business when she fell pregnant with her third child, so that she could concentrate on being a mum again. Emma for Beauty now employs five staff and the business is also mobile, contracting hair artists, cake makers, caterers and other specialised services needed to make your big day perfect.

They also offer facials, body polishes, waxing, spray tans, tinting and nail art - something that has become increasingly popular in recent months, even for kids birthdays! First it was the wind then came the rain and it was all topped off with a dusting of snow on the mountains. In summary what a summer it has been so far. This week there were two vehicle crashes. One was a cyclist who was struck by a vehicle from behind whilst out riding. Fortunately no injuries were sustained to the cyclist. There is an increased number of cyclists on the road out training for various events coming up. Please be courteous, slow down and give them a wide berth. The other crash occurred after a vehicle clipped another vehicle whilst passing on Luggate-Tarras Road. One driver was stopped and processed for driving XQGHU WKH LQĂ€XHQFH RI DOFRKRO Police received a complaint of theft after a person withdrew a sum of money from the Westpac ATM on Helwick Street. The person forgot to take the cash and another person can be seen on CCTV walking over and taking the cash. A large red, black and grey plastic letterbox was taken from a Ballantyne Road address. A vehicle was taken overnight from a Rob Roy Lane address at the start of the week. It was recovered later that day but police would like to know who was responsible. A residence was entered in Wanaka after a window was smashed at the rear of the property. Nothing appeared to have been taken. The Holiday Road Policing operation continues to the end of January. Our focus is on alcohol, restraints, speed and mobile phones. Please remember the speed tolerance is 4 km/ph. Have a safe week. Jolly Earthworks has won the tender to commence works on The Heights development situated centrally among the above-mentioned roads. At this stage works are scheduled to start late in January/early February, pending final confirmation of dates yet to be finalised in the resource consent process. This is a large construction process initiated and funded by a local business identity which will increase both the aesthetic and land value of the surrounding areas upon completion. Foresight has been given considering problems associated with large developments previously completed in the type of ground in Wanaka already, namely noise and dust. As a result of this hours of operation and site management will be in accordance with council by laws, with controlled access, latest industry protocols for dust suppression and settling ponds in place. Works will be undertaken between the hours of 7:30am and 6pm, weather conditions monitored, and the site will be managed to minimize impact upon residents. However, we do acknowledge there will be some unavoidable disturbance while construction is underway.
