In 2007 the Wanaka Rotary Club put forward the idea of a service for transporting people who were unable to drive to attend medical and specialist appointments at Dunstan Hospital. A vehicle was purchased with financial assistance from the Wanaka Masonic Lodge and also the Marsh Trust and Wanaka Rotary Club.

Over the past 9 years more than 1,800 people have used this service to Dunstan Hospital and also to connect with the bus at Cromwell which takes people to Dunedin Hospital.

The vehicle is driven by over 54 volunteers who are all local Wanaka residents. As the service is free we rely on these people and

Snow, sleet and rain means winter has arrived. Time to do those winter vehicle checks and throw those chains in the boot. Winter also means more care required while driving, greater following distances, lower speeds and clear windows.

The last week has seen local Police busy with a variety of incidents: On the 17th May a local man was caught shoplifting from New World in Dunmore Street. He is now unable to shop there as a consequence. Also on the 17th, a holiday home was broken into in town, a reminder to check the security of properties and advise neighbours when you are away.

On the 18th May, a ladder was taken from a Lagoon Ave, Albert Town property, but returned two days later. Ensure valuable items are locked away or out of sight.

On 20th May, Police were called to a Westview Road address to resolve an incident where a knife was produced during an argument- a male was removed from the address and will appear in Court to answer serious charges.

A large cow was herded back into a paddock opposite Wanaka Airport during the evening. Once again, farmers are asked to check fencing that border main roads to ensure stock stays on the correct side of the fence.

An iPhone was reported stolen from a local bar the same evening. It is important to keep an eye on valuables at all times as there are dishonest people frequenting the CBD. A local driver was issued a licence suspension notice for excess demerit points.

On 22nd May, a Subaru car was stolen from McDougall Street, where there was a party near the Wanaka Bowling Club. It was located the next day in the public carpark behind the Fire Station. Obviously whoever took it was too drunk to walk into town. Enquiries are continuing into the theft.

Also early that morning, a Christchurch couple were involved in a domestic incident at an Upton Street address and a Police Safety Order was issued to the aggressor.

Later that day, a local couple were involved in a domestic incident on the lake front while exchanging a child. Not much fun for the child. Both parties have been spoken to and given relationship advice.

The Mt Aspiring College Ball is being held this weekend.

They’ll understand that we sell dreams not travel and dream selling is a serious business.

They’ll have great experience in all things airfares and they will laugh a funny ‘I can do that’ laugh when we say there’s 20 requests backed up overnight from our international customers.

They will be able to use a GDS (we are on Sabre) like a Jedi Warrior. This experience is essential.

They will be big on things like honesty, positivity, having fun and working hard.

They will NOT be able to race a go-kart faster than the boss. That’s career limiting.

Importantly they LOVE airfares, respect customers and adore New Zealand. Preferably they know the tourism sector.
