Warbirds Over Wanaka (WOW) is calling for volunteers for their 30th Anniversary Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow next Easter where around 300 volunteers are required to help out at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Warbirds Airshow. The airshow couldn’t go ahead without the help of volunteers and WOW is grateful to anyone who is able to spare some time to assist. WOW is using new volunteer-specific software for 2018 to make the process of registering easier. It will also enable WOW to better match those who sign up with jobs suited to their talents and give volunteers pre-airshow briefings and information needed to ensure they have the best experience.
The Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust aims, ‘To educate through the celebration and promotion of aviation past and present’ and puts funds back into the local region. WOW has a strong history of volunteers returning to help time and again from around New Zealand and overseas and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining the team. They would prefer to have volunteers that are available for all three days of the airshow. You will meet new people, see some extraordinary flying displays and will have served a very worth cause.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is becoming increasingly useful, and increasingly powerful. In the media, there has been a spate of recent reports about intelligent machines with new abilities: driverless cars, healthcare robots, conversational agents, and so on. There has always been a debate within AI about how these technologies will impact on society when they are mature. This debate is now extending into mainstream public discourse: the social impacts of AI are now being seriously discussed by economists, lawyers and politicians. If AI technologies have the potential to dramatically change aspects of
our society, how should we respond to this potential? Associate Professor Alistair Knott argues that we need new interdisciplinary structures to coordinate a response. We need AI technologists to have some training beyond computer science, that gives an understanding of how technologies affect communities; and we need political and legal administrators to have some understanding of AI technologies, so they can make informed decisions about how to regulate them. Alistair Knott is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Otago. He studied Psychology and Philosophy at Oxford University, then took a MSc and PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh. He is an expert on human language modelling and has published over 90 papers in

Wanaka Police attended three road policing incidents this week. - A two vehicle minor injury crash on Aubrey Road, a single-vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Road where the vehicle rolled (fortunately there were no injuries) and the other was a vehicle crossing the centreline. On the night of that terrible storm, Police had two calls about large trampolines taking off from backyards.
