Come with us to explore the scenic beauty of West Wanaka Station, an iconic 30,000 acre high-country farm, that boundaries the Mt Aspiring National Park, the Matukituki River and the shores of Lake Wanaka. The farm has been in the Cochrane family for more than 100 years and has an ideal balance of river flat and high country. The farm currently supports 13,500 sheep, 1,350 cattle and 2,220 deer. On this trip, we will assemble at 1.30 pm on the grassy area immediately on the West Wanaka side of the Matukituki River bridge. We will lead you along the flat, and then rise into the high-country via a mountain pass, climbing to 1000m, witnessing spectacular vistas and animals in their natural environment. The journey will take a total of 3 hours and the Wanaka and Districts

Lions Club will put on a BBQ at the end of the day. Registration is essential and numbers are strictly limited. Don’t worry if you don’t have a 4WD vehicle, we will find one for you to travel in. The cost of the safari is $50 for adults and $25 for children under 15 years (children under 5 are free). All funds raised will be used to support Wanaka Search and Rescue. Celebrations for New Year’s Eve in downtown Wanaka begin at 7.30pm on Ardmore Street with great live bands, food stalls and of course, a spectacular fireworks display to light up the night sky at midnight. Community momentum around youth and alcohol

This is the season to be jolly, but there are several members of the public that don’t need the encouragement. According to research conducted in 2016 by the Wanaka Alcohol Group and in partnership with Mt. Aspiring College, “the prevalence of youth drinking is substantial, 28% among year 9-11 students. Many were binge drinkers with the intent to get drunk.”

for parents and youth to navigate alone because the report also identified concerns where adults are normalizing drinking; are providing the alcohol to youth; and are drinking themselves, with parenting and wider social consequences.

The resulting report “Harming Me, Harming You” generated a detailed community perspective of alcohol use across all ages in Wanaka – and we can all do better.

We all have a role to play in making change and it can start with conversations within the families, recreation groups and workplaces. The Wanaka Alcohol Group have created a series of educational initiatives and through developing business partnerships, are looking to add momentum in 2018.

The situation is not unique to Wanaka, however as a concerned community we can make change. This change is ideally a community focus, not left
