The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival opens this Friday 29 June for six amazing days in Wanaka. The event includes talks, films, workshops and readings and showcases the top entries from the Adventure Filmmaking and Mountain Book competitions. Keynote speakers for 2018 will include inspirational and well-known American adventurer, Conrad Anker. Mark Sedon of Lake Hawea will talk on his recent 1,700km kite and climbing expedition to Antarctica. The programme includes adventure sports such as base jumping, mountaineering, climbing, ski, snowboarding, kayaking, surfing, mountain biking to foreign cultures, remote travel and environmental issues.

The recipient of the Hiddleston/MacQueen and the Best New Zealand Film Award goes to Wanaka local Jase Hancox for his film The Sky Piercer. The Sky Piercer follows a team, led by fellow Wanaka local Sam Smoothy, to climb and ski the East Face of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Accompanied by one of the world’s best snowboarders, Xavier de La Rue, professional freeskier Nadine Wallner and Wanaka local Fraser McDougall, Smoothy faces weather, ice and variable conditions as he sets out to achieve a life long goal. This will be OUR HOUSE, a hub that is the heart of our community. • Centrally located, one-stop-shop, next to the Anglican Church at the corner of McDougall and Upton St. • Have meeting rooms, reception area, social support services, offices and a hall that seats 150 people and good parking The Wanaka Community House Charitable Trustees and support team, have been diligently working on this project since 2011. The tender procedure is now taking place, and the building committee is in the process of selecting the construction team. Construction is scheduled to begin in August.

Hello all from Wanaka. Well, I have to start off with a pertinent point from us. Our illustrious Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell retires this week after 42 years in the New Zealand Police. How many people last 42 years in one job? Many of us at the station weren’t born when he started in Wellington as a recruit. Well done Allan, you have been my boss for 20 of those years and I appreciate all the good you have done and how much you have contributed to the New Zealand Police and the communities you have worked in. If you are going to drive, don’t drink at all. It really isn’t that hard. Early on Saturday morning a youth was disturbed entering a car on Beacon Point Road. Left behind was property from unknown victims: A pair of shoes, a Bluetooth speaker and a newspaper. If anyone is missing those items we would like to hear from you. Lock up your cars and houses people. We investigated a fraud that was over a local social media sale site. Please be aware not everybody is honest on these sites. We sadly attended a fatal motor vehicle crash on the Wanaka Mt Aspiring Road, involving a visiting driver. There was almost a head on crash on SH6 Wanaka-Luggate Highway after some very poor overtaking. Please be careful on our roads, they are extremely unforgiving. We had a report of a vehicle syphoned of fuel at the Raspberry Creek car park on Tuesday. A Merida bicycle was stolen overnight from Mt Aspiring College.
