The bi-annual NEW LIFE TO OLD TREASURES Garage Sale is being held on Saturday 6 June 2015 from 9am-3pm in Spencer House Mall, on Dunmore Street.

The first NEW LIFE TO OLD TREASURES Garage Sale was held in 2009, and the bi-annual event raises between $2000 and $7000 depending on the goods donated.

All proceeds will be donated to Community Networks Wanaka.

Organisers are after donations of good-quality household items, clean bedding, collectables, heaters, sports gear, Ski gear and jackets.

The garage sale is organised by the Wanaka New Life Church. Pastor Wayne Ward says that he was so impressed with the wide range of social and support services offered by Wanaka Community Networks

1080: THE FACTS Recently advertisements were placed in this publication containing highly misleading information

regarding 1080 poison and its use in NZ. The questions discussed were: Does 1080 work? and Is 1080 poison safe? The following information addresses these questions. It is provided by the Pest Control Education Trust and is based on scientific evidence from reputable peer-reviewed sources.

Why do we use 1080?

An estimated 26.5 million eggs or chicks of native birds are killed in NZ by introduced predators every year.1 For example 60% of kea nests are attacked by predators2 and most female kokāko are killed while sitting on their nests3. 2,700 species of NZ animals and plants are identified as at risk of extinction4.

1080 works      

Kea nesting success rate increased from 51% to 100% after aerial 1080 in 2011 at Okarito5.

The kokako population has grown by 700% in the Mangatutu Ecological Area following four aerial 1080 operations6.

Whio breeding success increased dramatically in the central North Island following aerial 1080 operations7.

Kiwi chick survival more than doubled after an aerial 1080 operation in the Tongariro Forest8.

Many other native birds including tomtits, kākāriki and mōhua have had population increases following 1080 operations9.

In 1994, 1,700 herds were infected with bovine TB10. As a result of possum control, through the use of aerial 1080 coupled with ground control methods, there are now fewer than 80 TB-infected herds11.

1080 is safe when used correctly      

The toxic component of 1080 poison, fluoroacetate, is found in several plants around the world12.

1080 does not accumulate or leave permanent residues in soil, plants, water or animals13.

1080 is highly water soluble and is broken down by bacteria and fungi into non-toxic metabolites14.

1080 has never been found in drinking water supplies above the Ministry of Health tolerance level of 2 parts per billion15.

1080 does not kill or harm fish, and humans are at extremely low risk of harm from eating fish from 1080 treated areas16.

1080 bait contains 0.15% raw compound 1080 and a standard aerial operation uses 1.5 to 3kg per hectare. That’s around 4 to 6 baits in an area the size of a tennis court.

1080 is an essential tool in saving native New Zealand species.

It is safe when used correctly and it works.
