The 15th NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival will soon open in Wanaka. The event will host international and NZ speakers, a world-class line-up of films and a broad range of literary events, all honouring adventurous sports and lifestyles. Enjoy highly crafted films championing the love of the outdoors, adventure, the environment and foreign cultures. Of the 78 films featured, seven of the films are world premieres and six are from Wanaka filmmakers.
New to the event line-up this year is a free family film show designed to inspire the next generation of adventurers and ensure participation in the festival is accessible for all ages and families. Book your space online now!
Keynote speakers at this year’s event include one of the world’s most acclaimed climbers, Leo Houlding. Leo is a veteran of a score of epic ascents, including Everest, but specialises in free climbing the most technical peaks and biggest walls in the world. Also in the line up are Australian 8,000m climber Christine Jensen Burke, Kiwi climber Penny Webster and Australian author and adventurer Tim Cope.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS o1-Ѵ 7-m1;uv |o u;1;b ; |or | bঞom Local dancers will point their toes, twirl & leap with dancers from all around New Zealand this school holidays. Eleven Dance Wanaka students, aged 7-15 years, are looking forward to a week of intensive training at the national Dance Days event in Wellington. This is an annual event that attracts over 250 dancers, provides scholarship opportunities and an appreciation of professional dancers daily lives. The BBO Australasia annual event attracts dancers from Invercargill to Auckland and includes international tutors from Australia, England & New Zealand. “This is an absolutely amazing experience for our dancers”, says Dance Wanaka Studio Director, Anna Thomas. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our aspiring young dancers to meet and train with other similarly aged dancers who all share a similar passion and talent for their dance”. The dancers will take classes with reputable tutors and choreographers in the industry. They will also experience dancing in New Zealand’s top performing arts facilities – Te Whaea: National Dance & Drama Centre in Newtown, Wellington. This is where many of NZ’s top performers train full time before they are selected for professional companies.
The girls and boys will take five classes daily in disciplines of Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theatre and Contemporary styles. The trip will be exhausting, no doubt, but the knowledge and experience gained will be hugely fulfilling for all attending. Dancers will also compete in the National Theatre Award which includes dancing solo items in front of a panel of judges.

It was great seeing the pubs and bars full on Saturday night with patrons cheering on their respected sides and the good behaviour afterwards. A rock was thrown through the glass sliding door of the milk vending kiosk on Kane Road this week. This is udderly unacceptable and left the owners in a bad mooooooooood. It was a bad week on the roads for several motorists. We had a total of seven crashes reported. All of these happened on the Cardrona Valley Road and the Crown Range Road. Most of these crashes involved icy roads or grit. We can’t stress enough, the importance of taking that little bit of extra care when driving. In one of the crashes a passenger was thrown from the vehicle and was taken to the Queenstown Hospital with cuts and bruises. This can’t happen with a safety belt on! A male was arrested and charged with a fraud offence after obtaining a bond payment for a house that was not his to rent. A pair of bamboo blonde sunglasses were taken from a sunglass rack at a local shop on Ardmore Street. A female driver was processed for drink driving after she got her vehicle stuck on a public walking track near Mount Iron. She was spotted by a passing patrol vehicle trying to get her vehicle out of a ditch. The breath test result was a staggering 966 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. She was GH¿QLWHO\ QRW LQ D VWDWH WR GULYH DQG WKDW ZDV FOHDUO\ REYLRXV with the path she chose. Other than these and a few other matters that are non disclosable it has been a pretty good week.
