This is the first year since the biennial show started in 2002 that the show will officially operate as a charitable trust. A special thanks to Andrew Lovelock from Galloway Cook Adam Lawyer who completed this process.

The trust has five trustees: Andrew Lovelock, Grenville Craig, Tracey Gibson, Sarah Shore and Anna Mackay.

Proceeds from this year’s show will go to “Hands on Art in the Community”.

The team are positively brimming with anticipation for this year’s show, hosted by Sandy Hazledine, set over three successive evenings, and promising unbridled creativity and visual delight.

The 2016 line up features twenty-four individual

artists from around the district. Each artist has crafted using a mixed medium of three-dimensional treasures. Creations are individually choreographed to technical light and music, and in some cases multiple models perform together, adding collective splendour. The event will be opened by a performanceOpen from local dancers, lead by Amy Jolly.

Founding organiser Stew Burt said there will be less of an emphasis on farming and more on what makes “a good all-round female.�

The competition was shelved last year after the Bullock Bar was in the midst of a change of owners.

Stew said the competition will take a new direction this year, with more of a focus on the contestant’s feminine side and personality. “They have to be able to talk about themselves and entertain.� If they can do that then they will receive $1000 prize money - with proceeds from

the fundraiser going to the CanLive Cancer Trust.

Stew said the idea for the competition came from his two sisters, who worked in a castle in England owned by an American.

Sam is familiar to many as being integral in establishing the Student Volunteer Army in Christchurch following the earthquakes.

He will be giving a community talk on his work around the world at the intersection of disasters, resilience and youth movements.

Another varied week in Wanaka with school holidays upon us: A word of warning for those motorists using the unsealed part of Ballantyne Road. Last week there were two crashes caused by the loose gravel at the road edge. If a vehicle is coming towards you, slow down - as this will also help with visibility after you pass.

A local man had his car keys taken off him by a Police patrol on Thursday evening when observed drunk and walking to his vehicle. This probably saved a drink-drive conviction and prevented mayhem.

Wanaka Police had a report that two occupants of a motel unit KDG JRQH $:2/ ,W WXUQV RXW WKH\ ÀHZ WR $XFNODQG DQG KDYH returned safely without telling the motel owner.

On the 23rd Police attended a domestic incident where too much alcohol has been the precursor for an argument. A sober mind usually results in sober actions.

Another ‘scam’ reported to Wanaka Police this week. Someone in Morocco stated that they would post naked photos of the person on the net unless money was paid into a foreign bank account. Don’t be fooled.

A local man was arrested after breaching his bail conditions on two occasions over the weekend. Some people are slow learners. He appeared in Court on Monday. Any vacancies at the Milton Hilton?

On Sunday Police resolved an incident at Albert Town by way of a trespass notice issued to a female after a disagreement.

PlaceMakers Wanaka is right on top of its game after receiving Branch of the Year for the second time in 3 years.

Owner Tim Davis said the store was judged on a combination of performance measures across the business, from financial and inventory standards to customer engagement.

“It’s always a close race and we can proudly say every single person in the store worked hard to win it. Ultimately though it couldn’t happen without our customers, it’s their success that makes us successful. If they win then we win too.”

The local branch employs 35 loyal staff, many of whom have

been there more than 10 years through the ups and downs of the industry. “Having key people with this amount of knowledge and experience is vital to keep at the top of our game and deliver the service our customers expect.”

Tim and the team have a real drive for success, not just in the business but in the community as well. Many of the staff volunteer for local organisations such as the Fire Brigade, SARS and Buddy programme, and it’s this community involvement that is fostered by the organisation.

“PlaceMakers Wanaka is behind many local fundraisers but it’s not just about splashing our branding everywhere” Tim says “It’s something I am really proud of. We’re doing something because we all feel we are part of this community, not just for a business gain.”

Tim agrees that the recent building boom has been good for business. He was here through the last cycle, and says this time “people are coming here to live and they want to stay.”

The recent growth has brought exciting new possibilities.

PlaceMakers now has two specialist ‘frame and truss’ detailers. This service is generally only available in the very large stores, but Wanaka was lucky enough to attract experienced staff for these roles.
