The 3rd Annual Trail Ride is set to take place on Sunday the 23rd of April, with up to 500 trail bike riders of all ages and abilities from across the South Island expected to take part in this family friendly event. This joint fundraiser for Wanaka Primary School and Montessori Children’s House Wanaka raised $28,000 last year. Funds this year will be used to enhance the children’s outdoor area at the Montessori and develop the ‘Fit-Trail’ outdoor activity circuit at the Primary School.

Then the Wanaka Camera Club is for you when you’re ready to move on from ‘snapping pictures’ to taking photographs. Since its inception 10 years ago by our founding Member Jacqui Scott, it has grown to a solid 40 plus membership with a wide range of ages and abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’re running off your iPhone or have the latest DSLR, you’ll learn more about how to get the most out of your chosen mode of camera. Another aspect that is so important these days is the post production of your masterpiece and this has become as important as learning how to take a picture. Our focus is to bring in a different skilled photographer each month to our club meetings so we can learn their trade secrets, whether it be with the camera or in post production.

Monthly Meetup to Bring Town Together Four friends brought to Wanaka from different parts of the world have built a new platform for travellers and locals to get together and get to know each other. The girls’ travel blogging website Traveling Voyager was the inspiration for what will become a monthly meetup for anyone wanting to hang out and meet new people in a relaxed and friendly setting. Charlie Meyerhoff, Emily Menzies, Maddy Harker and Danielle Butler hope that the casual social event will become a place where everyone feels welcome, whether they’re new to town, a long-termer, Kiwi or from another corner of the globe. “Even though Wanaka is a really friendly place with awesome people, when I first got here in 2015 there didn’t seem to be an easy way or place to go to meet new people,” Danielle said. “We all agreed that in such a transient town it would be great to have a social evening for

Great Autumn Apple Drive Turns Five Wanaka’s harvest celebrations at Rippon Hall are expected to be even bigger and better than last year, when the Great Autumn Apple Drive celebrates its fifth birthday this Sunday 2nd April. Last year about 140 people turned over a tonne of apples into juice and chutney at the free community event. “All the best parts of past Apple Drives will be back, and we’ve tweaked the format to work even better,” said Local Food Wanaka volunteer Sophie Ward. “We’ll be making chutney and juice through the day from 9.30am to 3pm, and running free workshops on the hour from 11am-3pm.” One of the most popular activities is pressing apples into juice using a bespoke rimu apple press to crush hundreds of kilos of apples and pears. A&P Show winner Chris Riley is running a workshop giving participants the know-how to turn their apple juice into cider at home. Other workshops include harvesting nuts with Lisa Johnston, from the Village Nuts, integrating herbs into daily life with local naturopath and herbalist Rochana Moon and reducing food waste at home to create tasty dishes with Evelyn Valillee, chef at Fedeli. Rippon Hall will transform into a busy, messy, place of chopping, mulching and learning. Yohann Bourdin, Rippon’s Event Manager says that “Harvest is the key time of year for us at Rippon when we celebrate, quite literally, the fruit of the team’s labour. The Apple Drive coincides perfectly as a day on which to celebrate another Wanaka harvest.” Pirate Pickles chutney master Lorne Knight will be overseeing the big batches of chutney cooked up in the Rippon Hall kitchens. I hope everyone had an enjoyable week and are making the most of the longer days before daylight savings kicks in. Wanaka is in between busy seasons which may be the reason for a shorter Crime Line this week, although that quieter season seems to be getting shorter and shorter each year. It was disappointing to see that over the weekend three drivers were processed for driving with excess breath alcohol. One driver was caught after a vehicle was seen doing burnouts on Reece Crescent. The driver blew 905mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. Another GULYHU ZDV FDXJKW GULYLQJ ZKLOH GLVTXDOL¿HG DQG EOHZ 663mcg. The third driver blew 919mcg. Again, disappointing the intentional damage that has been occurring around the town. A letterbox was smashed on Ironside Drive and someone had a back window smashed on their vehicle. A cow was hit on Cardrona Valley Road which unfortunately killed the cow and caused damage to the front of the vehicle.
