This year’s musical is an extravaganza of acting, song, dance, music, props and costume with students (and their staff supporters) rising to the challenge of putting on this polished and entertaining production. The musical is a precursor of the 2002 film of the same name, about the life of precocious teenager Frank Abignale Jr., who successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer - living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. You might remember Tom Hanks and Leonardo di Caprio were pretty good in their roles. But you ain’t seen nothing yet! Director Emily McRae says, “Working with the cast and crew on this show has been a fantastic adventure. Their

focussed and passionate effort is the key to success. I am so proud of the effort of all those involved in this production.” She is also grateful for the community support and the generosity of sponsors.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Girls’ Southern Alps Traverse 2017 Four young New Zealand women came together in November 2017 to plan and successfully complete a traverse the Southern Alps from Arthurs Pass to Mount Cook. One of the four, Inga Booiman, will talk about the planning and the adventure as they made their way to Mount Cook village in time for Christmas. All four women are 27-29 years old and are actively involved in outdoor pursuits in New Zealand and overseas. They were motivated

by a desire to explore some more of their New Zealand backyard, to share the journey, and to inspire others girls and women. Sixth Annual Wanaka Disc Gold Open This weekend, Wanaka plays host to some of New Zealand’s best disc golfers at the sixth Annual Wanaka Disc Golf Open. The competition will be held over three days at Lismore Park and Eely Point disc golf courses, and local players are hoping to fare well on their home courses. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf but instead of a ball and clubs, players throw flying discs at a metal target basket made with chains to catch discs in flight. Disc golf players use a range of driver discs, mid-range discs or putting discs depending on the type of throw required and leading players can achieve distances of over 150m with a single ‘drive’. Martin Galley, tournament director and founder of Disc Golf Wanaka says the sport of disc golf is booming internationally and wants to encourage the community to support the event as they do with other sports. “Disc golf has been played in parks around Wanaka since the mid eighties and since we installed our first official course at Lismore

Park in 2011, the course has been enjoyed by thousands of players of all ages and all walks of life. Not only is it a lot of fun, but it’s one of the cheapest sports people can get in to (unlike ball golf, disc golf courses are free to play on) and it’s a great way get some exercise while enjoying our fantastic scenery.” Wanaka is home to some of New Zealand’s leading disc golfers with Hayley Flintoff, Kyle Martin and Dominic Hayden rated as title contenders for the weekend. All three players were members of the bronze medal winning New Zealand team at the 2017 Disc Golf World Team Championships in Colchester, UK. Galley says Wanaka has a great tradition of attracting visitors for sporting events and disc golf, while still growing, is no different. “Events like these are a great opportunity for us to showcase local businesses and brands to visitors.” He cites local brewers B.Effect, Mexican food truck Burrito Craft, and Cork bar as some of the local businesses supporting the tournament. Competition starts on Friday with doubles, and

The team had a relatively busy week attending a number of motor vehicle accidents, family harm incidents, drink driving and two arrests for disorder around town. Coastguard was called to help RXW D FRXSOH RI LQÀDWDEOH ERDWV WKDW JRW FDXJKW RXW LQ FKDQJHDEOH weather and lake conditions. In two incidents of note, a local lady had a lucky escape after her paddle board leash got caught around the top 5 knot buoy on the Clutha River. Quick actions by other members of the party and the ability to be able to cut her leash free, without doubt, saved her life. Unfortunately, the Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad was called out after a man in Luggate had a disagreement with another at the local Hotel. He discharged a shotgun out on the street after failing to ¿QG WKH PDQ KH ZDV ORRNLQJ IRU LQ WKH +RWHO +H ZDV VXEVHTXHQWO\ arrested without further incident. Again, a very luck escape for what could have been a very serious outcome. 7KH DERYH LQFLGHQWV DUH QRW WKH EHVW QHZV DV , UHÀHFW RQ P\ ODVW Crimeline. After almost 31 years with Police I have decided to retire and handed in my Sheriff’s badge and gun on Monday. Over half of my professional adult working life has been spent Policing in Wanaka after having spent the earlier years in Whangarei and Auckland. I have without doubt, immensely enjoyed being part of the unique Wanaka Community and raising my two children here. We are privileged to be able to live in such a beautiful part of the world and be surrounded by an environment I never fail to appreciate every time I look up. You only have to walk up Roys Peak (if there is room) and look down on Wanaka to realise that it’s still a small village really. The point of difference in this town is the type of people attracted to the area. I have been amazed at the talent, motivation, capability and sense of community that people bring. Long may that continue. Ultimately the more you give, the move you get out of this town. Maintaining the sense that we are all in this together and accountability to each other will help slow down the inevitable anonymity and increase in crime that we will see as the town grows. My only other real concern for the town is that we think really hard about how we can avoid killing the golden goose. If we get that right the egg will take care of itself. In leaving I hope that the reputation of Police as an honest, empathetic and professional group of men and woman who are here to serve the community has been enhanced. I am looking forward to a number of different challenges as I WUDQVLWLRQ LQWR D QHZ HUD 7KH ¿UVW RI ZKLFK ZLOO EH FRQYLQFLQJ P\ wife that I need a lot more time mountain biking, climbing, skiing and hunting. I know I have been in the right place, doing the right thing as I look back on the past 18 years and know I would not change a thing. The journey is the destination.
