On Saturday 16 June from 2.30pm until 6.00pm Kahu Youth will be celebrating Matariki once again at the Dinosaur Park. We’ll have our usual workshops and Kapa Haka performances, two bonfires on the shore with fire dance performances and loads more. There will be the huge community hangi, with over 900 portions packed in, and to finish it off we will be having our amazing fireworks display - so make sure you hang about! Once again this is a truly community affair. We want to give a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, schools and community organisations that put their blood, sweat and tears into making this happen. Everything from the hangi prep to set-up, pack down, stewarding and all the workshops and performances are volunteer-led. Our sponsors this year are the Wanaka Pantomimers,

LINK Upper Clutha, Callis Charitable Trust, The Wanaka Alcohol Group, Smokefree NZ, Radio Wanaka and the QLDC. Concussion is a growing issue in our active community. Most people will have had, or know someone, who has had a significant concussion at some point in their lives. The effects can be lengthy and debilitating and early management is crucial. Physiotherapist Catherine Anderson will be running the event with local Occupational Therapist, Andrew Thompson, also speaking. Catherine says, “We’ve been seeing more and more concussion recently and the research into the best management has progressed a lot, so we thought it would be a great time to share this

with the community”. Sometimes the symptoms of concussion can be quite obvious (confusion, drowsiness, etc) but other times it can be a lot more subtle. It is really important that this is identified, as if the recipient receives a second concussion before fully recovering from their first, the recovery can be much more lengthy. The evening will provide education on what concussion is, signs and symptoms to look out for, recent developments in research and when to seek help from a professional. It all started in 1971 by Tony and Kay Wiltshire, who built a large house on Beech Street with the aim of serving people with a hospitability ministry. This vision soon transformed into a church and thus the era of the New Life Church in Wanaka began.

The first week of June heralds the beginning of winter in Wanaka. Coupled with anticipation of heavy snow falls for the ski fields this year; Pastor Wayne Ward is eagerly awaiting the grand opening of the New Life Church building at 50 Reece Crescent, Wanaka. Although the church has been alive and kicking in Wanaka for over 47 years, the building itself has been in a somewhat nomadic state, serving the

Pastor Wayne and Judy Ward took over the church in May 2006. Over the years the New Life Church family has continued to grow and so did the apparent need for a more permanent church building. Formally known as the old ‘Med Market’, the new church building has been undergoing renovation in eager anticipation for the grand opening. “The vision is to use this building as a platform to bless the community. Creating a nurturing, Christ-centred environment to support everyone including families, the community and church

events”, said Pastor Wayne. The Sunday service takes place weekly at 10.00am. The service is up-beat with a heart for worship and growing people in relationship with God. The contemporary family church also offers programs for children and youth. The grand opening kicks off at 2.00pm on Saturday 2 June. This is a fun event celebrating the completion of the building and a trip down memory lane.
