We are proud to announce that The U.C Community Christmas Trust is in its third year of a very successful Santa’s Grotto. It was the brain child of a small group of like-minded people who wanted to share their love of Christmas with the community and also help the surrounding communities like Makarora, Hawea, Albert Town, Luggate & Cardrona, create a more festive atmosphere.

Jaime Hutter admits he’s getting hooked on his indoor rowing machine. And that’s a good thing because he will be glued to it for 24-hours on December 3 and 4. The last 10 weeks have been dedicated to training for the 24-hour solo world record of 277km, to raise funds for Wanaka St John, Coastguard and Search and Rescue. The 42-year-old from New York is a member of the Wanaka Rowing Club but chose to go indoors because, for one, he can’t complain about the weather. $QG VHFRQGO\ KH FDQ HDVLO\ ¿ W WKH WUDLQLQJ around family and work life. He used the Deans Bank 10-hour mountain bike race recently as a stepping stone, and since then has been focusing on his nutrition. Planning to refuel with bananas, liquid energy and salty potato chips throughout the event, he is

surprised nobody has questioned his sanity about doing it. St John, Coastguard and SAR were an easy choice to donate to, “because they are ready 24 hours a day for people and are ready to drop everything for us, anytime,� he said. Jaime won’t be totally alone in the Lake Wanaka Centre when he rows for the entire night, day and early evening, people have been signing up to take part with him, on bikes and rowing machines. And there will be plenty of entertainment to keep him occupied, such as movies and music as well. “I’m not sure what shape I will be in but I’m not going to stop,� he said. Today is the day for pulling out all your preloved wrapping paper and getting creative for Christmas. Wastebusters Wanaka is holding a free Christmas workshop between 4pm and 5pm, and again on December 5. Organised by Gina Dempster, there will be origami decoration making and handmade recycled gifts such as key rings. The message from Gina is to get really creative and re-use your kids art, pages from ripped books or sheet music, out-of-date magazines or old wallpaper. Scarves and fabric work really well as reusable wrappings, too. The Japanese have a tradition of wrapping objects in fabric, she said. What a wet, windy and cold weekend it has been. That didn’t put people off as town was busy with staff Christmas parties and other events. Last week started off with an assault at the Bullock Bar where a male was punched multiple times in the head by another male. The offender was described as a male Maori. His neck and arms are heavily tattooed and he left in a grey sedan. If you witnessed this or have any information as to who the offender might be then police would like to hear from you as this behaviour is not acceptable. A stolen vehicle was stopped on State Highway 6 and as a result two males were brought into custody. Police also recovered some stolen property. A knife and cannabis were among other items located. There were three single vehicle crashes on our roads last week. Two occurred on the Wanaka-Luggate Highway and resulted in both these vehicles rolling over causing extensive damage. Fortunately seatbelts were being worn by all involved and saved the occupants from severe injury. The third crash occurred on Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road when Mother Nature sent the limb of a tree crashing to earth. Talk about bad timing. The branch landed on the bonnet of a passing vehicle. Fortunately the driver was not injured however the same couldn’t be said for the vehicle. In the wee hours of Sunday morning police processed a drink driver. The result was a staggering 1097 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. This is over four times the legal limit. Have a great week and stay safe. Raw Raspberry Chocolate slice A vegan alternative to a Christmas dessert. Makes 20 squares

INGREDIENTS

Method for the base:

For the base:

In a food processor blitz dried coconut until it becomes like coconut flour. Add nuts and dates and blend until it resembles bread crumbs. Add the remaining ingredients and pulse to combine. The mixture should now hold together well. Line a tin 26.5cm x 16cm tin (or a 26cm spring form tin) with baking paper, press the mixture evenly into the tin and place in the refrigerator whilst you make the topping.

1 1/2 cups dried coconut 2 1/2 cups sliced almonds 1/4 cup cacao 1/2 cup vegan chocolate pieces 1 1/4 cup pitted dates 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons maple syrup Pinch sea salt 4 tbsp cold pressed coconut oil, melted

Method for the topping:

Drain the soaked cashews and rinse thoroughly. Blend all the ingredients (except the coconut oil), in a high speed blender until smooth. Slowly pour in the coconut oil with the blender going until completely combined. Pour the topping onto the base. Leave it to set in the refrigerator for a minimum of 6 hours. When set drizzle with 100g of melted chocolate and scatter with fresh raspberries if desired.
