Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc is a non-profit society that has donated more than $118,000 towards supporting music, youth and the environment in the region and throughout Oceania. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Help to protect our waterways Every business, resident and visitor to Wanaka and the Upper Clutha area benefits from our freshwater lakes and waterways. It will take all of us to help take care of this special place. The Upper Clutha Water Group in conjunction with Te Kākano and the Million Metres Stream project are working to ensure the lakes and waterways in this area are clean and healthy for generations to come. Project Manager Megan Williams says “Our goal is to plant 24,000 native trees and plants along waterways in the Upper Clutha catchment by 2022. This is part of a larger multi-year project supported by the Ministry for the Environment to develop an Upper Clutha community plan for managing the long-term health of these waterways.” Riparian margins are strips of land along the edges of natural waterways including streams, lakes and wetlands. Restoration of riparian areas brings many benefits to the health of the waterway including, bank stabilisation,

reducing erosion, pollution control, wildlife habitat and aesthetic enhancement Over the coming year, locations for the greatest benefits to water health will be prioritised and new restoration projects will commence. Local seed is collected so that eco-sourced plants can be grown in Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust’s community nursery. “We’re crowdfunding now so that we have the resources to get heaps of trees in the ground over the next few years. Everyone can be involved even if you can’t make it to a nursery session or a planting day.” Your support of this fundraiser will help to protect the small streams and tributaries and provide native habitat for our native birds and insects. This will help ensure our rivers and lakes are healthy, enriching our lives for years to come.

New forum topics, a fast track process and continuation of their ‘informed community’ strategy are all on the agenda for this year. Formed in 2011, Shaping our Future aims to give our community a voice in actively setting the direction of our district for generations to come. They are independent and apolitical with a process not constrained by single interest groups. This puts Shaping our Future in a unique position to be able to listen to the people in our community, identify the issues and proactively seek change to create the future we want. They use a process of public forums and volunteer taskforces to gather information from the community and create a roadmap to achieving change in the right direction for the district. Previous forums topics included Upper Clutha Conservation, Visitor and Tourism, Events and Economic Futures. In 2017 Shaping our Future finalised four large

forum topics – Queenstown and Upper Clutha Transport and Arrowtown and Glenorchy Community Visioning. Alastair Porter said “We concentrated our efforts in 2017 on making sure we were actioning the reports. We have been meeting with key stakeholders and actively making sure the views of our community are at the forefront in decision making.” “We have had success with recommendations from the Queenstown Transport report reflected in the recent Queenstown Integrated Transport Strategy. Our focus for the Upper Clutha is making sure that the views from their Transport Report are heard, considered and actioned. We have held workshops with QLDC and the Wanaka Community Board and will continue to work with all stakeholders to action the recommendations.” he said.
