Road Policing has consumed the greater portion of the last seven days, with a number of vehicle crashes, drink drivers running the gauntlet, and the spate of bad driving incidents increasing.

A summary of recent incidents are as follows: On 25th January, Police attended a single vehicle crash at Bridge No. 2 on the Crown Range Road after recent rain. A short time later another single vehicle crash on SH6 near Te Awa Road occurred, again with a wet road and add an unforgiving downhill bend into the equation. Also that day a local man was served with a driver licence suspension notice having accrued in excess of 100 demerit points.

On 26th January, Police attended another two-vehicle crash at Bridge No. 2 on the Crown Range Road, where a driver lost control on a wet road and collided with a passing vehicle. That same day we attended a crash at the Brownston St and McDougall St intersection where a tourist failed to stop and collided with another motorist.

On 27th Police received a complaint of theft of a ski jacket from a Lismore St house.

On 28th a male was processed for drink-driving when leaving the Hawea Hotel.

On 29th January, a local female was processed for drink-driving (under 20yrs) when driving home from a local bar. The same night another under 20 - a local male - was processed for drink-driving. He’d driven home from the pub, had a shower, driven back into town at 117km/hr and was stopped by Police before entering the CBD in the car he’d purchased the day before! Earlier that day Police attended a non-injury vehicle crash near Wanaka Airport on SH6 probably FDXVHG E\ GULYLQJ RQ DQ DOPRVW ÀDW W\UH A Bovett Place resident has advised Police that a mature tree on her property and one on the adjacent reserve have recently had holes drilled in them.

Enquiries are being made in relation to the incident. There was potential for major havoc being caused and anyone having information of those responsible are asked to contact Wanaka Police on 443 7272.

On Sunday 31st, Police attended two driving incidents, one at the bottom of the Luggate Cutting, and a second at the top of Crown Range Road. Both had the potential for a serious accident. Police also attended a two-vehicle crash on Mt Aspiring Road at 3pm on Sunday when a motorist who had slowed for D F\FOLVW VKH ZDV DSSURDFKLQJ GXH WR RQFRPLQJ WUDI¿F ZDV UHDU HQGHG E\ D Toyota 4Runner which was also heading towards Glendhu Bay. The purple/ EOXH 5XQQHU DQG LWV WKUHH RFFXSDQWV ÀHG DW KLJK VSHHG EDFN WRZDUGV :DQDND without stopping or assisting the two adults and two children in the car they had just written-off. The 4Runner should have sustained moderate damage to the front. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the driver or vehicle are asked to contact me at the Wanaka Police Station.
