Hawea Playgroup Annual Garage Sale Come one, come all to Hawea Playgroup's infamous Annual Winter Garage Sale. This year’s event is happening on Sunday 14th June in the Hawea Flat Hall on Camphill Road from 10am – 2pm.

It’s clear that we are preparing for the winter onslaught of increased police calls for service however. It was good to see that with the state of the frosted and icy roads after the snow, we only had one crash reported in the ice on the 28th, on Ballantyne Road. One vehicle has collided with a fence between Cardrona and the Crown Range overnight on the 31-1st. The collision with the fence did allow cows onto the road however, which put other road users at risk. I’m sure it reminded those who haven’t got chains yet to go out and start looking for some - and those who have theirs buried in the back of the garage to dig theirs out. We investigated a fraud involving a cellular phone bought online. This is not an uncommon occurrence and there are plenty of people out there who will rip you off at every opportunity. Thankfully they are by a long way the minority and most purchases go smoothly. We do investigate those matters and some of the methods of online purchasing have security options of payment etc. These are worth their weight in gold and I wouldn’t be putting any money that I am not prepared to loose without some assurances. Some people don’t work on good faith like others.

Be patient and watch your following distances. Treat all winter roads as icy. It’s hard to argue with being charged when 50 or so cars have driven cautiously over an area that is clearly icy with no problem and you loose control by not driving to the conditions. With the frosty weather with us now we will be looking at drivers who scrape a port hole in their frosty windscreen which is a $150 offence. It’s simply not safe so take another minute to scrape the windscreen, side and rear windows completely clear.
