MY COMMUNITY NEWS Rotary Book Sale next weekend - read all about it! Written by: Tony O’Regan The annual Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale is on next weekend (Friday October 12 - Sunday October 14). Volunteers have been collecting and sorting books, puzzles and games for the past two months in preparation for the event, to be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre. Last year’s event raised more than $15,000, all of which was given back to the local community. Starting small, the book sale has become something locals look forward to attending,

giving them a chance to stock up on high quality books at bargain prices. Club member Richard Wallace said books donated were usually of high quality and in good condition. The large number of donated books also meant organisers were normally able to be selective in choosing which books to put on the shelves. As well as supporting other community initiatives, funds raised from the book sale will help fund planting and facilities at Rotary Park in Glendhu Bay, a lakeside area near the camping ground which the local club is developing.

The Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale will be open 10.00am-6.00pm on Friday 12 and Saturday 13, and Sunday 14 10.00am-2.00pm.

$_; &rr;u Ѵ |_- !-7bo $;Ѵ;r_om; &v;uv vvo1b-ঞom Written by: Ian From its early beginnings way back in the mid-seventies when a need for local radio communications via radio rather than smoke signals was identified, the role the UCRTUA plays has developed to such an extent that the equipment on Mt Roy-Roys Peak is now vital to the well-being of our local community. Marine Channel 66 can be highlighted as one of the important communications channels on the hill as it serves the many boaters who use Lakes Wanaka and Hawea, as well as being used by the Harbourmaster, Coastguard and many of the local commercial marine operators. With our local inability to access VHF emergency channel 16, its function is vital and eing funded purely by users it is important at this stage that people are aware that open use is restricted to members for which a nominal fee is charged. The UCRTUA would love to have more members!

As well as the Marine Channel 66, the unit houses equipment for the Department of Conservation, QLDC, Civil Defence, Search and Rescue, local internet users, telcos as well as local businesses equipment.

An emergency plan was instigated and following further harrowing times including a break in and subsequent damage, we were able to give the contractor the go ahead to begin installation of the equipment.

Power was supplied via a cable ascending for 5 kms to the top and for some 40 plus years the management volunteers, due to the power cable suffering the rigours of the elements, did their best to keep the supply constant-but like all good things the cost of this became so high the future had to be seriously considered.

He began the install in April 2018 with half a meter of early snow on the hill, which thankfully melted and with the support of crossed fingers and the weather gods, about a month later the job was completed - a new Diesel generator and a new solar array now supplies the Unit with the power needed.

Building the reserves was needed, but spending the money on maintenance and keeping the costs realistic became a virtually impossible task and with all of that in mind the group sought funding assistance via some local community funding options. Good things take time and issues such as approvals for funding, resource consents etc were hurried along thanks to the input of some, but when in early 2018 the cable gave up completely we were in “Dire Straits.”

Welcome to the longer days of daylight saving and the start of the school holidays. We love this time of year! There has been a steady increase in driving complaints this week and more to come with the increase of visitors. If you witness bad driving, call *555 and report it. If you have a passenger with you please video or take photographs of the driving. It is such a great tool to show the offending driver and there is never any denial then. A large boat and trailer reported as stolen last week was recovered in the North Island and a local male was arrested. He has been charged with a number of offences including burglary. At 1am on 15th September 2018 a male damaged a CCTV camera lens on the corner of Ardmore Street and Lakeside Road. Not the smartest move as, of course, he has been captured on the CCTV. If you have any information or would like to hand yourself in please contact the station. Three drink drivers were processed this week, two of which nearly caused accidents. By all means have a drink and enjoy yourselves but take a taxi home instead of taking a risk and driving. We want everyone to be safe! We had two vehicle crashes reported. One driver swerved to avoid hitting a rabbit and hit several trees before coming to a stop. We, of course, love our furry animals but let’s face it, sometimes it is them or us. Another driver took a corner too fast and drove through a fence into a paddock. Very lucky that there were no injuries. Remember to lock your cars, as one person was reported rummaging through an insecure truck. Thankfully it appears they were disturbed and scarpered. It is that time of year when the bicycles are being dusted off and start to appear on the roads. Be safe and be seen. Protect yourself from becoming a victim by following some simple steps: Get a good bike lock. Lock your bike to something secure, even if only for a few minutes and avoid isolated places. Have your bike's frame security-marked or engraved. Take a clear colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of its description, including any unique features. At home, keep your bike in a secure garage or shed and keep the door locked. Have an enjoyable week and stay safe!
