Can you believe it’s already a year since Wanaka Recreation Centre opened? Everyone’s invited to the Rec’s 1st birthday party this Saturday 8th July. Come along between 10.00am and 2.00pm for free casual use, free kids’ games thanks to Kelly Sports, free birthday cake plus coffee, smoothies, real fruit ice cream and a sausage sizzle. It’s been an awesome twelve months with sports and community events, the opening of outdoor artificial turf and several local clubs now calling the Rec Centre home including netball, hockey, basketball and futsal.

Hundreds of casual users have also dropped by to shoot some hoops, have a kick-about or enjoy a nice hot shower! Join the party this Saturday to watch a junior netball tournament and get a good look at how the new swimming pool is coming along. The book portion of the festival runs from 7th to 9th July. An awards night will be held on the opening night of the book festival (Friday 7th July) followed by a talk by Tim Cope. Tim Cope is an award-winning Australian adventurer, author and filmmaker with a special interest in the traditional cultures of Central Asia and Russia. Tim’s most renowned journey was a threeyear, 6000-mile trip by horse from Mongolia to Hungary on the rail of Genghis Khan. If you’re in the mood for old fashioned storytelling, don’t miss out on Saturday 8th July’s schedule. Nick Allen will tell his story. Diagnosed in his early twenties with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, Nick found himself dependent on a motorised chair to get around. Nick will tell his story of how he navigated such a severe and life-altering challenge and managed to achieve his dream: a Himalayan peak.

Wanaka LGBT Community The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) community is a fun growing group here in Wanaka which ranges from people in their twenties right up to their seventies; all with plenty of stories to share. The community meets regularly on a social basis to offer understanding and support to those that need it. Group co-ordinator Charlie Meyerhoff says, “We’re very lucky that the place we call home is accepting of us, as this is still not the case for some places around the world.” She continues, “The gatherings are not about preaching to people. For me, it’s about hanging out with a great bunch of people,
