She never forgot the kindness and caring of the local residents. The family went back to England in 1937 and returned to Wanaka in 1947. Great friendships were rekindled. Mum lived opposite the boat harbour with her parents. It was known as “Mantell’s Track�. Dad helped clear and plant trees around Lake Wanaka, then his electrical papers arrived from England. We lived at the Roaring Meg Power Station, in the Kawarau Gorge, then at Ripponvale, Ballantyne Road. Mum and Dad both worked at Wanaka Stores and drove the store’s van when the Hawea Dam was being built. Then we lived in Dunedin to be near Mum’s parents.

Back to Luggate in 1959. Mum and Dad built a house and a shop and later it became a restaurant opposite the Luggate Hotel. Dad worked at Reid & Sons which became Upper Clutha Transport Ltd. Then he retired and built a home in Hopkins Street in 1972. Mum was a member of the Country Women’s Institute, for both Luggate & Queensberry and Wanaka. She became president of both these clubs and also on Federation. Both Mum and Dad participated freely in local affairs and caring for Luggate and its’ community. They also participated at the Wanaka Show. We, Jane Ironside, Josephine Clark, Robin Eden and the late Sally Reid and families wish to recognise, acknowledge and thank everyone for their kindness, caring, and for attending her church service, the JLIWV IRRG DQG IRU WKH PDQ\ FDUGV Ę RZHUV DQG PHVVDJHV RI V\PSDWK\ Special thanks to Drs David Allen, Mark Feeney and Jo Millis, Wanaka nurses, optometrist and staff, audiologists, physio girls, and all health workers. Last but not least the amazing care workers, who because of you we kept Mum home until 3 days before she passed. She was a great, amazing, well-read lady for 91 plus years, whom we shared many happy and great conversations with. - The oldest person in Luggate. We will love and miss her always. Wanaka’s Farmers and Gardeners market, the town’s weekly market for local artisanal producers and growers, turns ten this year and to celebrate, the market has undergone a re-brand with a new logo, website and name. Launched in time for the start of winter, the former Wanaka Farmers and Gardeners Market has changed its name to Wanaka Artisan Market to better reflect the variety and diversity of the stall holders who exhibit. To celebrate the start of winter and officially unveil the new-look market, a launch party will be held at the Wanaka Artisan Market site on Thursday 8 June from 2-5pm, featuring live music, free cake, spot prize giveaways and a few more surprises for market-goers. A Wanaka Artisan Market hamper crammed full of over $250 of products from the market will be given away to one lucky winner.

The movie follows the journey of average guy Jeb Berrier, who describes himself as “not a tree-hugger”, who starts wondering about the amount of plastic bags we use and decides to shop without them. The more he finds out about single use plastic, the more questions he has and the camera follows him as he travels to different countries asking questions about plastic. Plastic Bag Free Wanaka spokesperson Anna

van Riel said she loved the film because it looks at the impact of plastic in our lives with humour and curiosity. “It will make you laugh, as well as make you think,” she said. “I learnt heaps from the movie, and at the end I felt really inspired to do more to reduce single use plastic in my own life.” The movie screening is a lead-in to Plastic Free July month – when participants can choose to give up all single use plastic for the month, or to give up the Top Four: plastic bags, plastic bottles, coffee cups and straws.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Wanaka had a relaxed feel about it without too many major incidents. With the shorter daylight hours many cyclists are getting caught RXW LQ WKH GDUN ZLWKRXW DQ\ OLJKWV RI UHĂ€HFWLYH FORWKLQJ 6RPHRQH riding to work for an eight o’clock start really needs these simple safety devices, not to mention those cyclists wobbling home from the bars in the evening. On Monday evening a young male went about town kicking in several shop windows. When spoken to by Police the next day, KH DGPLWWHG WKH RIIHQGLQJ FODLPLQJ WR KDYH ¾ÀLSSHG RXWÂś DIWHU a string of bad news and consuming too much alcohol. Police assisted in his return to Christchurch and he will be attending court in Queenstown on wilful damage charges. 3ROLFH DQG WKH +DUERXU 0DVWHU ZHUH UHTXLUHG WR DVVLVW ÂżYH SHRSOH ZKR WKRXJKW LW ZRXOG EH D JRRG LGHD WR ODXQFK DQ LQĂ€DWDEOH GLQJK\ near Edgewater Resort and paddle to Ruby Island, without life jackets. The Harbour Master towed them back to the main land to guarantee their safe return. A house in Lake Hawea was broken into with prescription medication the target. Unfortunately, these drugs can be of value “on the streetâ€? and we ask people to be discrete about them being in the house and try to keep them secure. Positive lines of enquiry are being followed up in regards to this incident. Another burglary was reported where items belonging to several people were taken. Again police have knowledge of the likely offender who has now left town, but will still have to answer for this offence. On Friday night a young male fell into the hands of Police and was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. He spent the night locked up in Queenstown before explaining his actions to the court the following day. An overseas visitor was found by a Police patrol unlawfully on the property of a retail business. He was arrested and given a pre charge warning. This is a timely reminder to all business owners in Wanaka to secure their properties and make sure nothing of interest is readily accessible. Finally, the Wanaka Police are handed a variety of keys on a daily basis, mostly car keys.
