Challenge Wanaka - Why we work with volunteers As a charitable trust, The Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust is dependent on the goodwill, knowledge, skills and valuable time of volunteers.

One of our key objectives, alongside providing sporting events, is to enable social presence by providing a volunteering programme in the community and inspiring people of all ages and abilities to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. We feel it is an opportunity to open our doors and increase public awareness of our events and allow the public to contribute.

Through working with volunteers we find we benefit greatly from their inspiring passion and endless multi-tasking abilities and the

athletes are able to follow their dreams. We aim to provide opportunities for people of all ages to become part of a team, learn skills, meet others and gain memorable experiences.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Challenge Wanaka.

The community’s first real chance to show their support for Sticky Forest will be on Valentine’s Day. The Love Sticky community forum on February 14 is being organised by Bike Wanaka, to update people on what is happening behind the scenes in regard to the future of the forest.

A submission to change the zoning of the land from rural to low density residential would be considered by the QLDC during its district plan review this year.

Simon Telfer of Bike Wanaka said the Christchurch-based landowners have been invited to the meeting, but their ‘no response’ makes it seem they probably won’t be attending.

However, the community can ask questions from councillor Ella Lawton, council chief executive Mike Theelen, resource management consultant Ian Greaves and environmental law planner Phil Page at the forum.

Simon said this was also a great chance for the community to show the QLDC how much they value Sticky Forest as their recreational space.

He encouraged people to forward their questions to the Love Sticky Facebook page in advance so the panel of speakers could be well prepared.

Simon said there has been a lot of interest in the forum, and people want to show their support, but weren’t always sure what questions to ask. “It’s quite a complex issue.�

The main point that people should know is that the whole of Sticky Forest can’t be built on, but the fact that nobody knows what the landowner’s future plans are - makes it difficult. “It’s all a bit of an unknown,� he said.

Emma Dixon is living her dream and she loves helping others fulfil theirs.

They also offer facials, body polishes, waxing, spray tans, tinting and nail art - something that has become increasingly popular in recent months, even for kids birthdays!

Last year Emma was runner-up in the Young Blood make-up artist of the year, proving all her hard work and effort has paid off.

Crashes this week: One on Mt Aspiring Road, a driver distracted by the view crashed into a vehicle on the 30th of January. Only minor injuries but the accident was due to a complete lack of attention.

One in Hawea where a driver lost control in the gravel and rolled on the 31st of January. Very lucky to not be badly injured in this one.

We had a report of cash at an address in the Lagoon Avenue, Albert Town area on the 31st.

We also had a report of the theft of a wallet at the Kiwi Bank on Ardmore Street. The wallet was located at the Bullock Bar later the same day with $270 cash and two credit cards removed.

We also had a SAR job relating to two persons late to return home from an overnight tramp and another where a male fell on the Rob Roy Glacier Track.

There was a burglary of jewellery from an address in Morris Road where jewellery totalling almost $8000 was taken.

There is a suspect in this matter and it is being followed up out of town.

So that is a snippet of the jobs and tasks attended by us this week.

The Wanaka Residents Association was formed in 2001, when it evolved from the former Wanaka Improvement Society. Over the years we have submitted on wide-ranging resource consent matters and have undertaken a large number of community amenity projects including tree planting, the swimming pontoon in the lake, the flood level memorial in front of ‘Kai’, seats on the top of Mt Iron and at Oxbow, maintenance of the millennium tiles, the stone seat at the top of Monley Lane on Lismore St, the flag pole and seats at the Council offices and latterly the lychgate at the cemetery. Over the years a small but committed group of members have worked hard on behalf of the community.

However our membership has been steadily dwindling and with most of the current committee standing down at this AGM, we feel it is time to review the relevance of our role. The size and diversity of the community, combined with the robust representation and service provided by the Community Board, makes the committee feel that we have probably reached our “best by” date. The committee’s recommendation to the forth-coming AGM is that the association be wound up.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? We encourage members, former members, non-members and anyone with an interest to attend our AGM, where you will have the opportunity to hear more about how we reached this recommendation and to present your own views. There are alternatives to winding up the association but they would require a new group of people who have vision, time and energy to give to the association’s future.
