National Volunteer Week is almost upon us and Volunteering Central invites anyone involved in volunteering to come in, out of the cold and celebrate the astounding contribution made by volunteers in our community.

"This year, the theme is ‘making time’ and we are thrilled to have a selection of inspiring speakers who will share their volunteering stories and highlight how they enjoy making time to volunteer,” says Volunteering Central’s Gillian White.

“We are keen to see volunteers from all walks of life join us, whether volunteering with a sports club, environmental group or organisation supporting local people. The celebration gives everyone a chance to see

what is going on out there and we hope volunteers will leave feeling really great about their contribution, having had a very pleasant hour mingling with others.”

A busy week with vehicle crashes, assaults, thefts and Search and Rescue incidents reported.

We attended 5 serious crashes this week. Three of them can be partly attributed to weather. The other two apparently driver error.

On 31 May a car left the road near Queensberry on a moderate bend and after rolling at least twice came to rest on the road verge. The driver the sole occupant luckily escaped with minor injuries. On the 1st June a car slipped off the Crown Range in gravel; and later that afternoon we attended a serious crash just past Makarora. A People Mover with 7 persons on board ran off the road and came to a sudden stop when it hit a rather large WUHH 7KUHH SDWLHQWV ZHUH ÀRZQ WR 'XQHGLQ KRVSLWDO ZLWK VHULRXV injuries, the remainder taken to the Wanaka Medical Centre with less serious injuries. The driver of that vehicle has faced a FKDUJH RI &DUHOHVV 'ULYLQJ FDXVLQJ LQMXU\ LQ FRXUW On the 5th June we attended two further crashes, one on Newcastle Road and another near Queensberry where a vehicle with 5 young men in it rolled. Again luckily the injuries were minor.

I know I am stating the obvious here but it is winter and drivers need to drive to the conditions. If it is cold there is likely to be ice, particularly in shaded spots, near culverts and on bridges.

My advice is to leave 5 or 10 minutes earlier for your destination.

There were two thefts from vehicles reported on Sunday. One from the Puzzling World car park and another from a vehicle on Roy’s Bay. Both vehicles had only been left for a short time but were left unlocked. It appears we have some opportunist thieves driving around. I am aware of at least one similar theft over Queenstown way, meaning the offenders may be what we call the marauding type, i.e. mobile and opportunist. A simple message here, remove valuables from your vehicle and lock it.
