Four hundred trade stalls, 265 horses, 50 Jack Russells, two Kiwi icons and one celebrity cook are gearing up for two enthralling days at the 80th Wanaka A&P Show, held this Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, at the Wanaka Showgrounds. For 80 years, the Wanaka Show has been the annual occasion that brings the Upper Clutha community - as well as the rest of the lower South - together. Wanaka Show coordinator Jane Stalker says the 80th anniversary is an important milestone for the event. “The Wanaka Show holds a special place in the hearts of locals so we really wanted to make the 80th anniversary event a true celebration,” she says.

Star attractions for this year’s Show include celebrity cook Annabel Langbein and Kiwi entertainers the Topp Twins. Children’s author and musician Craig Smith and the Wonky Donkey are also set to take the stage, and Adventure Consultants mountaineer Guy Cotter will be sharing his experiences of Mt Everest in a one-off talk on Friday at 2.30pm. The livestock and equestrian events will once again be a big drawcard with some of the country’s top horses, sheep and cattle competing. Two free park-and-ride shuttles will run from the reserved land across from the medical centre on Cardrona Valley Road to the Showgrounds every 15 minutes between 8.30am5pm. Show gates open 8am-5pm and tickets are $15 per adult for a one-day pass or $20 for a two-day pass. A youth pass (13-17 years) is $5 for both days, and children aged 12 and under are free. www.wanakashow.co.nz

Food may be the single largest opportunity for us as individuals to collaborate, share, bring social justice and peace to our own communities, and the world. Slow Food International was formed in 1986 to do just that. Slow food members contribute globally to preserving traditional and regional cuisine

and encourage farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystems. Wanaka has several local food initiatives such as community gardens, food forests, foraging, seed swapping, composting, vegie markets - all promoting Slow Food values. Wanaka does not currently have a common ‘connecting space’. Slow Food International provides a unique opportunity for us to form a ‘Wanaka Convivium’ enabling the local food scene to thrive. A site toilet was removed from a building site in Albert Town. The toilet is made of plywood and has oval windows with an iron roof. Two males were captured on CCTV stealing food items at Wanaka New World. They were spotted the next day sunbathing on the lakefront and were promptly arrested. A vehicle had diesel siphoned out of it while it was parked in the car park near the Red Bridge at Luggate. A wing mirror and headlight was smashed on a vehicle parked on Dublin Bay Road. Outside the Big Fig cafĂŠ a big terracotta pot containing a palm tree was tipped over causing the pot to smash early on Saturday morning. One driver was processed for drink driving and driving whilst forbidden. The driver blew 779 micrograms per litre of breath and the vehicle was impounded. We have a range of found property that gets brought in on a regular basis and we love reuniting owners with it. A piece of building equipment as part of a ‘laser dumpy’ was brought in this week that was found on McPherson Street so check your gear as you may be missing this item.
