Hawea Flat School Out of Zone Enrolments Enrolment at Hawea Flat School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office. The Board of Trustees has determined that up to 6 places are likely to be available for out of zone students in 2017. A new publication reveals: “Stories of our Upper Clutha WW1 soldiers & QXUVH ZKR PDGH WKH XOWLPDWH VDFULÂż FH so that we could live free.â€? On Armistice Day, our thoughts turn to remembering soldiers who died in WW1, however 100 years ago on 11 November 1916 men and women including those from Wanaka and the wider Upper Clutha area were still actively engaged in war and dying for their country. It is all so long ago now and too long for most of us to remember these men and women personally. “Courageous and Freeâ€? is the result of two years UHVHDUFK E\ Âż YH PHPEHUV RI WKH 8SSHU &OXWKD Historical Records Society and Wanaka Genealogical Group. It not only relates the stories behind the names listed on Upper Clutha War Memorials but also uncovers the names and stories of many other soldiers not previously recorded. In some cases living family members were able to be traced, that resulted

Local singers from primary school age to retirees are invited to take part in an inter-generational choir at next year’s Southern Lakes Festival of Colour. Up to 20 singers are needed for the ‘Sing It To My Face’ show next April, and workshops will be held in Wanaka on Friday November 11 and Saturday November 12. A separate workshop for those interested in joining one of the two adult choirs will be held in Mount Aspiring College’s performance room from 10am12pm on the Saturday. All sessions will be led by musical director Julian Raphael and theatre director Jo Randerson from Barbarian Productions - the Wellington-based theatre company that created the project. Festival Director Philip Tremewan said the project continues the tradition of including local community productions in the festival programme. “We’ve had wonderful feedback about recent theatre projects that were built around local talent like ‘Riverside Drive’ in 2011, ‘Tracing Hamlet’ in 2013 and ‘Like There’s No Tomorrow’ in 2015. A clean up along the Cardrona River has prompted plans for a new track. 9ROXQWHHUV DW WKH ¿ UVW )ULHQGV RI &DUGURQD 5LYHU working bee on Saturday picked up more than 150 black bags and 15 trailer loads of rubbish. Co-ordinator Charlotte Cretney said there had been an amazing turn out for the working bee with around 35 volunteers helping to keep Wanaka clean and green. The initial clean up was focused near Wastebusters on Ballantyne Road just before the bridge on the right, but it’s hoped the group will continue to protect other local waterways. Items of note found along the river included animal carcasses, a pool table, televisions, a vacuum cleaner, beds, hundreds of cigarette packages, couches and thousands of bottles & cans, a barrel of oil and even an abandoned car. Members of the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust and Don’t Chuck Your Muck groups were involved in the working bee, along with the QLDC. Upper Clutha Tracks trust Trustee John Wellington said that they were looking at options for a track along this section of the Cardrona River. ³3UREDEO\ RXU ELJJHVW FKDOOHQJH ZLOO EH ¿ QGLQJ D party to take on the ongoing maintenance of any track formed. Police had a hectic week dealing with violence, domestic, dishonesty and driving offences. Monday started with two burglaries from Wanaka addresses where a variety of items were taken including skiing and tramping equipment, video and still cameras, binoculars etc. There are plenty of dishonest people out there and securing your property to the best of your ability is necessary. The Fulton Hogan yard in Tarras was also targeted by thieves with three shipping containers broken into and various tools taken, two loaders tampered with, a caravan stolen registration 26FZO along with a generator and heavy duty lighting. A local was apprehended and processed for excess breath alcohol returning a whopping result of 1113 mg/l.
