Christmas Hamper & Foodbank Drive Tuesday 19 December This year the Christmas Hamper and Foodbank Drive will be held on Tuesday 19th December 2017. Food donations can be given during the drive (keep an ear out for the sirens); dropped off to our office at 73 Brownston Street; or put in the marked bin at New World Wanaka. Donations go towards creating Christmas hampers full of food and presents, given to families that may otherwise find it difficult to celebrate Christmas. We kindly ask that all hamper food is dropped off by 19th December.

Gifts (preferably wrapped and labelled with age/ gender) can be dropped to Ray White Ltd as part of their ‘Little Ray of Hope’ project. These gifts then get added to the Christmas food hampers.

In an ideal world, everyone would have enough at Christmas. Enough food on the table, enough shelter to stay safe, enough resources to make it through each day without feeling it’s a struggle. But we don’t live in an ideal world, even here in Wanaka. An expensive cost

of living and sense of isolation can mean tough times.

Often the tough time will pass; people may just need a bit of support to get them through.

Last year, 70 Christmas hampers were given to families and the food collected helped stock our foodbank for the entire year. To date this year, around 163 food parcels have been given out from the foodbank. We also appreciate cash donations as it allows us to buy the foods we need, such as meat and milk, throughout the year.

Let’s come together and lend a helping hand to our community this Christmas. We wish you all a fun filled and relaxing holiday season.

Your local foodbank needs: pasta sauces; meats (we have a big freezer!); canned fish; crackers, biscuits and muesli bars; rice and pasta; baking goods; toiletries; and Christmas foods for the Christmas hampers.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Teddy bears, sausages and Santa!

Upper Clutha Plunket are once again holding their free community Teddy Bear Picnic at Wanaka Station Park.

This year the event will be held on Sunday 3rd December from 10am – 2pm.

Upper Clutha Plunket are a community funded group. Organiser Victoria Haydon said, “We love putting this event on to give back to the Wanaka community who have helped with volunteering and fundraising so we can keep our local Wanaka Plunket rooms open. We just really want to say thanks for all your support this year. This event is to encourage local families to spend time together and there’s no better time than now, with the festive season approaching.”

This year’s event will be hosted by MC Anna van

Riel who will also be performing some of her fun children’s songs. Other entertainment includes performances by Anna Rowley, the Wanaka Primary School Kapa Haka group, and the Wanaka Ukulele Orchestra. There will be life size teddy bears, a teddy bear photo booth, Cheeky Chops Face Painting, and at 1.30pm, a visit from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade and Santa.

Plunket will have their tent up with changing and feeding facilities and will also be doing a sausage sizzle and selling raffle tickets. Men-love Berries will have their van providing coffee, real fruit icecreams and smoothies.

Please bring along a picnic, picnic blanket and your favourite teddy bear, but please no dogs or glass.

Helping wee Hugo Cherry season is here again and the team at Cheeki Cheeries are helping to raise funds for Hugo, a boy with Cerebral Palsy who is in need of a life changing operation. On Thursday 7th January from 8.30am to 6.00pm, you can go and pick your own cherries at the orchard at 247 Ripponvale Rd, Cromwell. All proceeds from the day will be going towards Hugo’s operation. ”Cheeki Cherries is Cheeki by name and Cheeki by nature, we are all about having fun and making your visit memorable. On the charity day we hope to do the best we can for Hugo’s operation. Our lovely staff are always full of beans and will instruct you how to pick cherries.”

Hugo’s story I’m Hugo and I am 3 years old. I was born at 33 weeks and have Cerebral Palsy.

The type of Cerebral Palsy I have is called Spastic Quadriplegia, which means that both my arms and legs are very tight and makes walking (and other things) really hard and painful for me to do the simplest of tasks.

There is a surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which is unavailable in NZ but is performed at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in America. SDR is a surgery that reduces the tightness of muscles. I was on the waiting list for a date in May 2018. I had to cancel my previous surgery date back in October due to insufficient funds.

At the start of November, I underwent another lot of Botox injections, this time in my hamstrings. I’ve always been restricted to a walking frame with supportive strapping, however I’ve made a massive advancement in my mobility, have changed walking frames and now have no strapping. Now that I’m more mobile, I’m having to learn to try and transition into newer postures and remembering where my feet are, which is quite tricky for me, but I’m determined to learn.

When I have SDR surgery, it will help me function in a more natural, normal way and will give me the hope of walking unaided instead of being confined to a wheelchair for life. This will be life changing for me... and my family.
