Coastguard wants to keep the whole family safe on the water this summer. No one wants to take risks with their family whether it’s on the road or on the water. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your family safe: • Make sure the whole family, especially children, are wearing a life jacket whenever you are on the water. • Let someone know your plans by making a trip report, it’s so easy using the Coastguard Boaties Best Mate App – if you are overdue your nominated person will be told. • Occasionally things do go wrong; if it’s life threatening call 111, the Police will have help

On Friday evening a serious fire spread through the hillside above Lake Hawea dam and put our homes at risk. If it were not for the enormous efforts of the many parties involved in the fire fighting operation some of us would have almost certainly lost our homes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fire Emergency NZ crews who were mobilised from around the region, Alpine Helicopters and Aspiring Helicopters, NZ Police, Dept of Conservation, Otago Civil Defence and Emergency Management, NZTA, QLDC, Lake Hawea Motors, Lake Hawea Hotel, Lake Hawea community centre, Central Machine Hire, Sailz and any other organisations and individuals we may have missed. We would also like to thank the Hawea community who provided assistance in so many ways, both to ourselves and to those who were working to put out the fire. We are sincerely grateful for everyone's help and to all the concerned family and friends who contacted us to offer somewhere to stay. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanashave - Shave for a Cure in Wanaka! Written by: Sarah Blechert On the 10th of November we’ll be shaving our hair off to raise money for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand and everybody is very welcome to join! On average there are 6 Kiwis a day diagnosed with a blood cancer or related conditions. We can’t make the blood cancer disappear so far, but at least we can try to raise as much money as possible to provide vital services that help to support cancer patients and their families or to purchase an emergency assistance voucher for patients to ensure they get to hospital for treatment. The event will start at 3.00pm and take place at the local youth club Kahu Youth in Wanaka.

There will be hairdressers present during the afternoon in case someone has got questions, doubts or if the participants just prefer getting their hair shaved off by a professional rather than by a friend. The money we raise will provide vital services that help to support cancer patients and their families such as providing counselling sessions for a patient or grief counselling when a petient has passed away, to purchasing an emergency assistance voucher for patients to ensure they get to hospital for treatment and many other supportive services. Our Armistice Day Commemoration has three parts: 1. A walk from Peter Fraser Park to the Anzac Peninsula on the Lake Hawea Dam, beginning at 10.30am. 2. The Commemoration, beginning at 11.00am. 3. The community luncheon at the Lake Hawea Community Centre from 12 midday. We suggest for people to start assembling at Peter Fraser Park from 10.15am. At 10.30am sharp we will start the walk down to the Anzac Peninsula on the Lake Hawea Dam. We will be led by a Police patrol for traffic safety, and a WW1 ambulance, accompanied by a Piper and

Drummer, and with the Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade bringing up the rear.

2. On the north side of Peter Fraser Park off Capell Avenue.

During the walk and approach to the Anzac Peninsula, Pyrotechnics will be in action producing considerable ‘artillery’ noise. (We suggest you bring ear plugs, especially for children and babies).

3. The Contact Energy parking area at the south west end of the Lake Hawea Dam, and through the gate with the big red Poppy adjacent to the garage.

We are timing our arrival to our memorial site to be just prior to 11.00am, the time of the symbolic silencing of the guns. The Armistice Day Commemoration will then proceed.

Please join with us for this occasion to commemorate the end of WW1, and to remember our 1 nurse and 14 soldiers who did not return home to families and communities. Lest we forget.

Following the commemoration service, we invite the community to join us for a luncheon being provided by the HCA and the Hawea Youth Group at the Lake Hawea Community Centre. Here we will have displays, including a WW1 Tank, three readings and a song reflecting the soldiers’ and nurses’ experiences of WW1. Parking is available at: 1. The Lake Hawea Community Centre.

The Carnival Is Coming To Town Written by: Elizabeth Munn Juggling with chain saws, escapology, walking on broken glass and other stunts will be live on Saturday night. In the afternoon there will be more entertainment including magic, fun and lots of mess aimed at big and little kids. Arts on Tour is presenting two different performances at Hawea Community Centre on Saturday 10 November. At 2.30pm “Messy Magic Adventures” will kick off proceedings with a warm and witty family friendly show that has run at Circa Theatre to rave reviews. “Spray” and “Wipe” are employed to clean a magician’s house

with hilarious results. Reviews include some of the following comments:Described as fast and funny, other reviews describe the show as, “Very well conceived and cleverly constructed” In the evening at 7.00pm “Seven Deadly Stunts” will entertain crowds. The show is rollicking entertainment which celebrates seven of the most notorious stunts in history inspired by the life and times of Harry Houdini and his friends. Escapology, juggling with chainsaws, walking on broken glass and other stunts are performed along with stories of how and why they exist.

These stunts are performed by a married couple David Ladderman and wife Lizzie Tollemarche, who put their bodies on the line. David is an actor, circus performer and theatre maker. Lizzie is a sideshow stuntwoman and actor. She has performed in “Scared Shitless’ at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at the World Buskers Festival. Tickets are available at Mitre 10, The medical centre cafe, Sailz and at the door. The afternoon show costs only $10 a ticket with family discounts. The evening tickets are $25. The profits from the show will go to the Hawea Community Centre who are raising money for a generator.

Fire appliances from many other towns, helicopter pilots with amazing skills, local contractors with water trucks, water pumps, generators and locals helping people evacuate. People rushing out to Lake Hawea checking on others with offers of accommodation, blankets and food. Delta with the electricity and roading contractors from Queenstown. These men and women put in many hours to save the forest and 5 homes. I cannot imagine what it would have looked like if it happened in say 4 weeks time, with the dry winds to come. To those volunteers and to those who produced an array of food and drink for them, I would think that the community has to take their hats off to you. For those who have volunteers at their work sites.
