āori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), f irst arrived in waka unua (double hulled voyaging canoes) f rom Hawaiki more than 600 years ago. Māori connections with the land, mountains and water of New Zealand are steeped in history going right back to the traditional accounts of creation. Wānaka is one of the lakes referred to in our tradition of 'Nga Puna Wai Karikari o Rakaihautu' which tells how the principal lakes of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island) were dug by the ancient explorer Rakaihautu. The name 'Wānaka' is considered by some to be a South Island variant of the word 'wananga' which refers to the ancient schools of learning. In these schools young men would be taught whakapapa (genealogies) which stretched back over a hundred generations and karakia (incantations) for innumerable situations.

preserved and transported back to the kainga nohoanga (settlements) of coastal Otago. The tupuna (ancestors) had considerable knowledge of whakapapa (family), traditional trails and tauranga waka (landing places), places for gathering kai (food) and other taonga, ways in which to use the resources of Wānaka, the relationship of people with the lake and their dependence on it and tikanga for the proper and sustainable utilisation of resources. All of these values remain important to Ngai Tahu today. The Mauri of Wānaka represents the essence that binds the physical and spiritual elements of all things together, generating and upholding all life. All elements of the natural environment possess a life force, and all forms of life are related. Mauri is a critical element of the spiritual relationship of Ngai Tahu Whanui with the lake.

Wānaka was traditionally noted as a rich tuna (eel) fishery, with many thousands of the f ish once being caught,

EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

Captain James Cook landed and mapped New Zealand.

European settlement began in the Upper Clutha River Valley with the establishment of sheep stations by runholders. The first station was at Albert Town, the only place where settlers could ford the Clutha River.

One of New Zealand's most beautiful towns in one of New Zealand's fastest growing regions. Wānaka has grown a reputation as a great place to visit and an even better place to live!

A NEW NAME The town of Pembroke was officially renamed Wānaka.

THE START OF TOURISM The first hotel in the region was opened by Theodore Russell, at the site of the present day Wānaka Hotel.

SNOW TOWN The opening of ski fields in the area from the 1970's helped to cement Wānaka's status as a year-round resort town.

WHEN DINING OUT IN WĀNAKA, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE PLETHORA OF LOCAL BEERS, WINES & SPIRITS ON THE MENU.

T

he Wānaka region is an emerging hotbed of all things to quench the thirst of the most discerning travellers. From world class wines and spirits to microbreweries, the Wānaka region has your potion of choice on tap. Although sometimes overlooked, Wānaka makes a good argument to be in the running for the most breweries per capita in New Zealand. Check out some of Wānaka’s local breweries on your Wānaka brewery hop.

RHYME X REASON BREWERY RxR is the brainchild of Jess Wolfgang and Simon Ross. Jess is a brewer, Simon an engineer - and the result is a small team brewing, packaging and distributing craft beers across New Zealand from their in-house production facility. RxR Brewery is a small brewery that packs a punch, you can drink in and try from their 14 beers on tap, take away, book a tour and tasting session, or attend one of their ‘kick-ass’ live events.

12

With a local food van making an appearance, why not make a meal of your RxR trip. If you are travelling with your furry friend, you will be pleased to know that RxR is very dog friendly, so feel free to take your pooch to meet the team. See their advert on page 33 for more information.

BREWERY HOP

WA N A K A B E E R WO R K S Founded in 1998 by David Gillies, because every great town deserves a great brewery. Dave has since moved on and passed the torch so to speak, but the brewery still remains 100% locally owned and operated. Wanaka Beerworks has grown from humble beginnings to a micro brewery that produces hundreds of thousands of litres of ‘liquid gold’ each year. For those interested in seeing how magic is made, Wanaka Beerworks offer daily tours or tastings. If you don’t fancy the trip out to the Brewery, you can visit the Wanaka Brew Bar, their in-town taproom located at 80 Ardmore Street. You will find 16 beers on tap, local wines, local spirits and some of the best views in town. See their advert on page 34 for more information.

PEMBROKE WINES & SPIRITS Pembroke Wines & Spirits’ unique idea of combining retail with a bar is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. The kind of place where you can get a decent glass of wine or beer from a hand-picked list for an honest price. Superb Central Otago, New Zealand and other distinguished wines from around the world can be enjoyed in the tasting room, while taking in Wānaka’s mountain view from one of the picnic tables, or purchased to take home. Hopheads will also find Wānaka’s largest selection of New Zealand craft beers to drink in or take away. On your visit, you will likely be looked after by owner operators Nadia & Troy Davidson. They have a wealth of experience in luxury hospitality and there is not much they don’t know about our local breweries. See their advert on page 39 for more information.

GROUND UP BREWING From the ground up! Ground Up Brewing is a 1200-litre production brewery based in Wānaka. Ground Up was inspired in 2015 by the founders' biggest obsession (after the beer that is), climbing and mountaineering, it also relates to how their business is run. Most of the beers are named after routes and climbs that they’ve either done or are on the ultimate tick list. In 2021, they opened their very own taproom with 22 taps to try. The doors opened with seating inside the brewery, as well as a purpose-built deck. So, pop in and taste not only their local brews, but also the food from Brewery Lane, their onsite food hub that has a great dine-in or take-out menu. See their advert on page 24 for more information.

Maude is a family owned and operated wine company with its roots firmly entrenched in Central Otago. Our first grapes were planted in the Maungawera Valley just ten minutes from the Wanaka township back in 1994, when it was still just a sleepy little holiday destination. Our beautiful Maude Tasting Room sits just above the Wanaka Golf Course with breathtaking views over the lake and mountains. We implore you to come try some award winning locally handcrafted wines at our tasting bench. We offer a daily selection of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Bubbles. If your day allows a more leisurely visit, enjoy a glass or bottle alongside some delicious small bites on our scenic terrace. Our gregarious staff will take you through the story of Maude Wines, sharing with you their intimate knowledge of the wines and what makes them so unique. Our hours are Thursday to Monday, from 12 to 5pm. Please note our hours and days do change seasonally so please check online. Bookings are definitely essential - we are still big on atmosphere, but small on space.

Visit and you will taste wine with one of us: we all help to harvest the grapes and make our wines. No reservations needed, but recommended for groups of 6 or more. Email us to schedule special tours or learn about winery events.

Maori Point Vineyard is a scenic 20 minute drive from Wanaka, along the beautiful Clutha River / Mata-Au. Our name reflects the gold-mining history of this area, and the older Maori traditions here.

We offer food platters of local produce, a kids' play area, and EV charging. Dog friendly. Contact us ahead of time to schedule a vineyard tour or barrel tasting. Or, bring a picnic and your fishing pole to see what’s biting!

TASTING ROOM OPEN HOURS 1pm - 5pm December 1 - April 30: Every day except Tuesdays. Closed December 25, March 29 and 31. June 1 - November 30: Open weekends only. Please call or email in advance if possible.

We can arrange for special group tasting experiences (including food pairings), must book in advance. We can ship wine throughout New Zealand and internationally.

WONDERFUL WALKS

5 DAY walks 01. Rob Roy Glacier Track

04. Dingle Burn Peninsula Track

3 – 4HRS RE TURN (10 KMS)

C A R PA R K T O T U R I H U K A C O N S E R VAT I O N A R E A : 3 – 4 H R S (12 K M S O N E WAY )

One of New Zealand’s best half day walks. A 1 hour drive from Wānaka, the walk starts from the Raspberry Creek carpark. After a 15 minute walk through the valley you cross the West Matukituki River by swing bridge into beech forest. The track then climbs steadily through a small gorge along the Rob Roy Stream, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with spectacular views of the Rob Roy Glacier. *In winter months please check track conditions with the Department of Conservation as the track can be subject to snow and ice.

02. Roy's Peak Track 5 - 6 H RS R E T U R N (16 K M S ) At the summit of this popular day walk is an all-encompassing panorama that includes most of Lake Wānaka, the surrounding peaks and Mt Aspiring/Tititea. Before setting out, be mindful that this exposed track has no shelter from the sun or rain. Temperatures can drop quickly, even in midsummer – take warm and wind-proof clothing. There is challenging avalanche terrain above 1,000m during winter and in spring. Refer to www.avalanche.net.nz if planning a trip. *Closed for lambing 1 October to 10 November.

03. Lindis Peak Track 5 – 6 H R S R E T U R N (13 K M S ) The track is signposted at the start of Old Faithful Road, off SH8. The view from the 1,226m summit is one of the most extensive in Central Otago. The vista includes the stunning St Bathans Range to the east and numerous peaks along the Main Divide – from the head of the Hopkins valley in the north, to Mount Aspiring/Tititea in the south. *Closed for lambing 10 October to 5 December.

60

Walking along Lake Hāwea’s eastern shores there are great views up the Hunter valley and, on a clear day, to the west as far as Mount Aspiring/Tititea. From the car park, 8 km north of Timaru Creek, follow the 4WD track to Rocky Point and around the bluffs to Silver Island Bay, before gaining height to sidle around The Peninsula. The Turihuka Conservation Area is at the mouth of the Dingle Burn.

05. Isthmus Peak Track IS T H M US PE A K : 5 – 6 H RS R E T U R N (16 K M S ) M ATAT I A H O C O N S E R VAT I O N A R E A : 5 –7H RS (15 K M S ) This track is signposted just south of Stewart Creek on SH6. Follow the poled route along the creek until it joins a farm track. From here it’s a steep, winding, rocky climb to a skyline ridge, with sections where bikers will need to dismount and push. A sign on the ridge points right to the track to 1,385m Isthmus Peak, and left along the exposed ridge to the Matatiaho Conservation Area. Closed for fawning 20 November to 20 December. Craig Burn access: A short walk from the car park leads to a pleasant picnic spot on the lower Craig Burn. There is no formed track above this point on the conservation area; access is via scrubby, steep and rocky terrain.

WONDERFUL

WALKS

10 SHORT walks 01. Mount Iron Walk

04. Gladstone Track

08. Eely Point Walk

Arguably Wānaka’s most popular walk, Mount Iron is an impressive, glacier carved, 240m rocky knoll. From its summit a great panorama unfolds: lakes Wānaka and Hāwea, the Cardrona and upper Clutha valleys and all the surrounding peaks.

From the Hāwea dam the track follows the foreshore in front of Lake Hāwea township before travelling through open farmland to John Creek Recreation Reserve.

Eely Point is a popular, sheltered boating and picnicking area. From Wānaka town follow the lakeshore to the right past the marina, and on to Eely Point. Carrying on around the point for another five minutes takes you to Bremner Bay, a good family swimming spot.

Loop track:

1.5hrs (4.5km)

02. Diamond Lake Track Spectacular views include Lake Wānaka and a skyline dominated by the surrounding peaks. The distinct shape of Mt Aspiring/Tititea lies to the west. Sections of this track are steep, with significant fall hazard. The track is often slippery, even in summer – take extreme care. This track is not recommended during the winter months due to ice. Circuit track return:

45mins, 2.5kms

Lookout return:

1hr, 2kms

Lake Wānaka lookout return:

2hrs, 5kms

Rocky Mountain summit track return: 3hrs, 7kms

03. Beacon Point Walk The track continues from Bremner Bay to Beacon Point, with great lake and mountain views along the way. It suits all ages and abilities, including baby buggies and bikes. 30mins (1.5kms)

1.5hrs (6.5kms)

05. Glendhu bay track Incorporating the Waterfall Creek Track, continue past the creek for one hour on terraces above Lake Wānaka, before dropping onto a small northfacing beach suitable for swimming. From here the track continues around to Glendhu Bay. 3-4hrs (12.5kms)

06. Deans Bank Track Loop track: the Deans Bank Track situated on the Clutha River/Mata-Au near Albert Town is a one-way multiuse track popular with mountain bikers. A walking track leads down to Dublin Bay. Loop track:

1.5hrs - 2hrs (11.5kms)

07. The Blue Pools A one hour drive from Wānaka in the Makarora area is this scenic short walk. Perfect for kids and an ideal swimming spot in summer, walk through beech/ tawhero forest to a swing bridge over the Makarora River. After crossing the river, follow a boardwalk to a viewing platform over the Blue Pools. Soon after, cross the Blue Pools bridge for great views up the river gorge. Return track:

20mins (1km)

09. Outlet Track Spectacular scenery makes this popular for both walkers and bikers. The track follows the Clutha River/ Mata-Au; start or finish at the Lake Wānaka outlet or Hikuwai Conservation Area in Albert Town. Bikers should ride carefully and give way to walkers. The Hikuwai mountain bike loop above the main river track gives a more challenging ride. 45mins (3kms)

10. Waterfall Creek Track This track starts from the western end of Roys Bay, soon reaching Wānaka Station Park, a beautiful picnic area on the left. The track then winds along the lake’s western shores for superb views, passing Edgewater Resort and Rippon Vineyard before reaching Waterfall Creek. 1hr (2.5kms)

The newest addition to wanaka’s exciting food scene! Our mission – simply make the best tacos we can using NZ ingredients. For us that means starting with sourcing our whole corn kernels from a farmer named Pattie in Napier. Then using the traditional process of nixtamalization, we turn the corn into masa dough which is fed through Tony the Taco Press, and a delicious fresh corn tortilla is born. Our wood fire grill is at the heart of everything we make, this is where we lovingly grill fresh local ingredients, which are then nestled into your tasty, authentic taco. Best enjoyed with Mexico’s favourite cocktail – the Paloma.
