transformations TIPS FROM THE PROS
No doubt you have had an idea in your head for a number of years of how you imagine your perfect day will look! And not to mention the pinterest boards of everything from colors to flowers to linens. You have finally booked your reception space but now you are feeling slightly overwhelmed at all of the decisions and the mere concept of how to transform this blank canvas into the wedding of your dreams. Designing a space is more than picking your color palette and favorite flowers (though those are helpful things to know). Below are a few points to help you get started on transforming your venue into the perfect atmosphere for your big day. Impact & Atmosphere It is important to make a space feel warm and inviting. You do not want the space to feel empty or cold. Candlelight and dim lighting is the most dramatic way to change a space. The lighting and feel of a venue can make or break a space - it does not matter how much you spend on floral and linen and other rentals if the “feel” isn’t first created. Different Venues Have Different Decor Needs Not all spaces are created equal. It is essential to keep in mind the type of wedding you want and number of guests when booking your event space. It can take a lot more money to turn a banquet hall with no natural light into a botanical oasis rather than just holding that wedding at a botanical gardens with tons of windows overlooking the beautiful gardens. When you are trying to change a space your budget will quickly increase to get the desired look you want. Working With Large Ballrooms Work with professionals and the venue to get their input on who they recommend for their space. Vendors who are highly recommended by the venue have experience working in the space and know the capabilities well. Plan accordingly how much money it will take to change the space - it could easily surpass the price per plate you are paying per guest. A Hired Wedding Planner or Designer Can Help With The Transition When transforming a space, timing is crucial. Setup prior to the day or on the day is a determining factor of a successful look and happiness to the bride and groom when they walk in the room.

entertainment YOUR GUIDE TO BOOKING THE PERFECT DJ Article contribution by Shaun Anthony Signature Entertainment
Selecting entertainment for your wedding reception is no small decision. One of the things that guests most frequently remember is whether or not they liked the dj. We've all been to that wedding where things went wrong, the dj talked too much, and the music selections were way off. Our first suggestion is don't just go with your fiance's second cousin because he happens to have an iPhone and some speakers. Doing your research goes a long way. Local DJ, Shaun Anthony Signature Entertainment, gave us an excellent list of the top questions to ask your DJ before booking. Finding a DJ who you feel comfortable with and is someone who you trust takes so much stress out of the planning process. Take time to make sure that the DJ knows your preferences and overall style. Communication is key to understanding the services that they are providing for you and what to expect on the day of your wedding.

Do you DJ for a living or as a hobby? Will you be the DJ at our wedding? Do you actually beat-match/blend the music in time and key or just fade from song to song? Where do you get your music? Is it legal? How involved can we be in selecting music? How did you become a DJ? Do you bring back-up equipment? How would you define your “style” when making announcements? How long have you been in business? What is included in your cost? Will we meet again before the wedding? Do you require a meal? What happens if you get sick or have an emergency?

ADAM & COURTNEY JULY 9, 2016 / LAMBEAU FIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEFINING 78
Adam and Courtney wanted to plan a rustic barn wedding. After all, Adam was from a local dairy farm family and Courtney loved the idea of a warm and inviting space for guests. When looking at local venues they quickly realized that with their friends and family from out of town as well as their large guest list a barn would not be the best choice. They decided on Lambeau Field - not as much for the groom’s love of the Packers but for the space itself. It had a large bar, and a room that they were confident, with the right vendors, could become a one of a kind space for their guests to celebrate with them. They also loved the proximity to hotels. When the planning was done Adam & Courtney welcomed their guests to Green Bay with local flair. The welcome dinner was held at Green Bay Distillery complete with plenty of local brew selections & cheese curds. Guests were also able to partake in tours at the stadium during the weekend. The wedding day followed with Courtney and her gals getting ready by the fabulous Jen Ronning of Sparkle Darling in their Packer Tailgating rental home. The gentlemen slipped on their tuxes after enjoying a morning on the groom’s family farm. They met at the church and from there - they awaited their forever together! The sister of the bride had a great surprise waiting for the groom who is an ice cream scientist - an ice cream social outside of church! Guests walked out of church on a warm July day and were immediately offered many selection. Adam & Courtney left the groom’s family church in Dykesville as Mr. and Mrs. They were then whisked away with their bridal party for pictures at a friend’s residence and then greeted their guests from near and far at legendary Lambeau Field. The venue was transformed into an elegant atmosphere with a beautiful blend of shimmering metallics for the linens. Votives, white hydrangeas and sunset colored roses filled the tables as floral draped chandeliers hung overhead. Signature Drinks including a Wisconsin Old Fashioned flowed and hors d’oeuvres were passed. A formal plated meal followed by an indulgent cupcake buffet. The fun didn’t stop there - DJ Shaun Anthony kept the dancefloor packed all night long!

MARISSA & BLAKE JUNE 11, 2016 / GORDON LODGE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN JEAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Marissa & Blake wanted a destination wedding. Marissa is an event planner and wanted to make sure her taste and culinary needs were met in a venue. They were familiar with Door County but not as much with Gordon Lodge as it is on the quiet side of the Peninsula. Once they toured the venue, which included a waterfront ceremony area, a perfect boathouse for the welcome celebration and amazing lodging for their guests, they knew it was right for them. Guests were greeted at hotel check in with custom welcome bags with local favorites. The bride and groom welcomed their guests after rehearsal for cocktails and appetizers at the Boathouse which overlooked the gorgeous North Bay at sunset. The wedding day started with the girls getting primped in their cabin while the men tried out the kayaks. Pictures followed with the ceremony taking place late afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny day for an outdoor ceremony with light wind, as the guests proceeded out of the ceremony they were handed a glass of champagne garnished with a Door County cherry. The outdoor cocktail hour followed with lawn games and merriment. As guests entered the event center they were met with large peony blooms, wooden harvest tables and a fresh woodsy decor. The cupcake display table smelt amazing and the food prepared by Gordon Lodge was impeccable. Guests danced the night away and regrouped the morning after at brunch. It was a weekend to remember for many.

photography 101 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Article contribution by Erin Jean Photography & Jessica Bedore Photography
How do I know if a photographer is right for me? ERIN: Choosing the right photographer for you is, yes, based a lot on their style, but also making sure their personality is a great fit with yours. Looking over things, like their Instagram feed, can give you a great idea of their personality before even contacting them. Make sure their images are what you are looking for. Do you want a photographer who shoots film, one who uses mostly natural light OR someone who uses off camera lighting and creates big dramatic effects? Those are very different ending photos. Hire both the art you love and also the person you love! JESS: There are several things to consider when you're searching for your wedding photographer. It's true when all of the articles say that personality is such a big factor in the photographer that you end up selecting, and that's because your wedding photographer is going to be with you for the majority of your big day. Obviously, style is also a huge factor. Once you do a bit of research, you'll see that there are so many different styles of photography, especially in the wedding photography market. Ask yourself how you want your images to look. Do you want something light and romantic, or do you prefer a moodier look? Studying portfolios of different photographers will help you decide what type of look you're into. Yikes - you’re more than I thought you would be! Why? How do I justify this cost? ERIN: The saying you get what you pay for is so true in this wedding photography world. The market is saturated with photographers. Everyone has three cousins and an uncle who can pick up a camera and create a nice image. But, professional wedding photographers understand weddings. We know timing and how to not miss the big moments. We know how to get you great images if it’s pouring rain or the light is awful. I have had countless couples approach me at weddings saying their biggest regret was not hiring a better photographer. They all say the same thing. They hired a cheap photographer and hate the images. It brings tears to their eyes more often than not. After all, once that day is gone, all you have is your photos and memories. You put so much time, effort and love into planning this day. JESS: AMEN to what Erin said! It's so true that you get what you pay for. I think this is especially true with most wedding vendors just because the market is so saturated. What most people don't realize is the money that goes into creating those perfect pictures for you. We, like any other business, have marketing costs, web hosting fees, insurance, gear, backup gear, editing equipment and so many other things to maintain and pay for. Any good professional has looked very carefully at these costs to determine a price that they can be profitable at, which supports their family. Why is a second shooter so important? Do I need to have one? ERIN: I don’t actually think they are super important. I think they are wonderful and I always have an assistant with me who is shooting for most of the day. But, honestly, I think it’s one of those things the wedding world tells you that you HAVE to have, and it’s not the end all, be all. I know many very talented photographers who shoot alone. Engagement Shoot Tips JESS: I love engagement sessions for so many reasons! Mostly, they're fun and give us a chance to get to know each other. Plus, I get to prove to your groom that getting his photo taken isn't really THAT bad. They're also a really good way for me to get to know how you interact behind the camera. Believe it or not, every couple is different, and by doing an engagement session, I can learn your quirks as a couple before the wedding. And honestly, who doesn't want pretty pictures to hang around the house? As far as insider tips, I always recommend that the bride schedule her trial hair and makeup run the morning of the session. That way, you can see how it looks on camera! Do you want to see my pinterest board of poses I like? ERIN: Nope. Pinterest boards and photo lists take out ALL the creativity out of shooting. For this reason, we actually have it in our contract that we won’t work off a list of photos. This is for many reasons. When you take away our creativity and have us checking things off a list, we are concentrated on that. We don’t get to do what you hired us for... telling the story of YOUR day! We want to get your Grandma laughing, your parents sharing a sweet moment of memories, your girlfriends giggling. We miss the real moments when focused on a list. Plus, you should trust the photographer you hire. That’s part of hiring someone you love. If you hire a professional photographer you adore, trust them to know what they are doing. That way you can relax and enjoy your day.
16
T H E W E D D I N G M AG A Z I N E 2 0 1 7
Do I need to get you a shot list? What should it include? JESS: I always say no to shot lists. My ONLY exception is when it comes to family shots. However, I find it much more effective to just assign this duty to a bridesmaid or groomsman. Pick someone who knows each family, and have them gather family members. Works like a charm! When do I get my photos? JESS: This can vary! I would say that the average timeline is anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks. We deliver images within 6 to 8 weeks. Most photographers will have an expected delivery timeline in your contract, and if they don't make sure to ask! Why don’t I just get rights? Why do I have to pay for them? ERIN: Photographers are sooo lucky to have found something we LOVE to do and can make a living doing it. But, the truth is, this is exactly that. Our living. We have to support our families and run a business. It’s just like any other business with big costs going towards equipment, backup equipment, programs, marketing, websites, accounting, continuing education, wonderful taxes, etc. When photographers were shooting film, they made their main profits on prints. Now that we are mainly a digital world, that transfers over to the digital files. Plus, photography is art. We are artists at our core and in every sense of the word. Your digital files have hours of editing and our heart poured into them, just as any other artist delivering an end product. JESS: Erin has a great explanation for this! It does go back to the days of shooting film, and the bottom line is that we need to make a living. More and more these days, you'll find photographers who have digital files "included", but really, they've probably just wrapped the cost of those files into your package. All pricing structures are different. But yes, our photos are both our art and our living, and we need to be fairly compensated for that. Why do you want rights to publish my photos? ERIN: Our photos are our art. We own the rights to them so we can publish them in magazines, blogs, ect. It’s how we further our business and market in this digital world. Plus, it’s ever so fun to have the whole world love on your wedding via our personal blogs, social media and publishing partners! :) Why is it worth having a wedding planner - can’t you do it? ERIN: Photographers are NOT wedding planners. Sure, we understand the photography timeline of the day to perfection, but that is our main focus. We don’t coordinate vendors and make sure everyone is where they need to be, when they need to be. We are focused on documenting your day. They are completely different jobs. A planner's job has ten thousand facets that we, as photographers, are completely not involved in. Planners make the wedding world a whole lot more relaxing... HIRE ONE! :) You will thank us after. JESS: As I continue to shoot weddings year after year, I continue to see how crucial it is to have a wedding planner! You can definitely tell the difference when you have a great planner behind the scenes, coordinating vendors and making everything work seamlessly. Trust me, on your wedding day, the last thing you're going to want to worry about is where your welcome signs go, and where you want the bouquets that were just delivered. As wedding photographers, we can definitely help develop your timeline so we are able to get the shots we need, but a coordinator is going to do SO much more than that. They're the ones making sure the flow of the day is flawless, so guests know exactly where to be and when. Trust me, it's money well spent! Wedding Day Tips ERIN: ENJOY YOURSELF! If you hire wonderful people, trust them. Just focus on your family, friends and the reason you are doing this. Committing to your love. Take a few moments alone, just the two of you, and try to take it all in. HAVE FUN! JESS: Just relax and enjoy all of your day. It goes by SO fast, so make sure to soak in every moment as it's unfolding! Like Erin said, trust the people you've hired and don't worry about a thing! It's easier said than done, but remember to have fun and don't sweat the small stuff.

VENUE TIPS Article contribution by Angella Jellum, Senior Event Manager at Hyatt Regency Green Bay
When selecting a reception venue it is always a good idea to figure out if having a venue attached to a hotel will be easier for your guests and their overall experience for the wedding weekend. Having a hotel attached is convenient for guests and will be less stressful not having to worry about shuttle service at the end of the night. Always check with the Wedding Sales Manager to see how flexible they are with their menu offerings as it is fun to get creative with your food options to give your guests a special experience that they will not forget. For example it is fun to incorporate foods that are important to each side of the family or a food that has special meaning to the bridal couple. Always ask if there are any hidden fees that are not listed on the wedding packet. Some facilities offer a one price option while others charge for additional items such as linens and china. Knowing these fees will help when comparing prices and features that the different venues have to offer.

REAL REALWEDDING WEDDING
SHAWN & MORGAN JUNE 4, 2016 / LAMBEAU FIELD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM THIEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Some weddings make you feel as though you’ve truly, fully stepped into a fairy tale. This was one of those weddings! Morgan & Shawn first started planning a year and a half before the big day. They were searching for a space that could accommodate close to 400 people and had amazing possibilities for decor. She knew that she dreamt of a princess wedding with a lot of flowers, great ice sculptures, limo buses, a rocking band and exquisite details! She enlisted a group of talented vendors to make her dream a reality. Her guests started the day in a beautiful church with a perfectly detailed aisle to the alter. After the ceremony the couple was whisked away in a horse and carriage. A large portion of the guest list was from the local area, so they were blown away when they entered Lambeau Field for yet another event. They could not believe that this football meeting space was turned into the venue fit for Morgan & Shawn’s perfectly pink and floral wedding. As guests entered the 4th floor they were greeted by the sounds of a string quartet along with an impressive seven tiered cake. Every detail was carefully crafted from the place settings and the linens, to the ice sculptures and lighting. The centerpieces and accent florals were stunning but the showstopper was the 14 ft flower wall, filled with the most incredible hydrangeas and roses (buds n bloom!). An ice sculpture of their love “Nala” was adorned with the same floral garland that the pooch wore down the aisle just four hours prior. The fun kept coming with a large band from Chicago keeping the dancefloor packed all night long. Truly an unforgettable day for this beautiful couple.

There is just something about beautiful fresh flowers that can transform any space instantly! Today the options are endless and it is simply amazing how flowers can create such a variety of themes from rustic to elegant to whimsical. Many couples are not sure where to start or what to expect when working with a florist. Jerad Karcz from buds n bloom design studio in De Pere, WI, sat down to give us some helpful advice on how to navigate the waters of all things floral! What do we want brides to know about floral decisions? It’s very important to come to your floral consult with a color palette. The job of your floral designer is to advise you of the seasonal flowers available, so coming to your consult with specific flowers already chosen is not necessarily needed. What are the most common mistakes when choosing florals/setting floral budget? The biggest problem we find when we meet with clients is discussing budget because most people don’t understand what flowers cost. They see images online, but the images do not have a price attached. We always encourage brides to review the proposal and then contact us to discuss adjusting the budget as needed.

Trend: Greenery per Pantone At buds ‘n bloom, we are loving the trend of greenery. It’s lush and lovely! Every flower is derived from a green bud, so pairing large blooms with eucalyptus, olive branch, and salal is breathtaking. A Designed Look There is nothing more lovely and assuring as having a professional florist take the worry out of designing and delivering your wedding flowers. The flowers are fresh, perfect and handled with care every time! Adding height & dimension to your table/reception decor It’s very important to have a variety of centerpieces at your reception. This adds so much visual interest in the space! It’s great for your photographer to capture each tablescape and also adds interest for your guests to enjoy! Dual Purpose: using florals from ceremony at the reception Depending on your reception room layout, if you are having round or long tables, a kings table, etc., many of the elements used at your ceremony can be repurposed at your reception. Examples being pillar candles down the aisle, tall florals on the altar, flowers on the ends of the pews. All these can be reused at your reception. Bouquet Trends We are seeing a very organic and loose floral design trend, where the flowers are arranged in a more free-flowing design and hand-tied with silk or velvet ribbons.
Statement Pieces that WOW Boho is making a comeback with large drapey bouquets, floral crowns, and large bloom hair flowers. Chandeliers in every shape and form add that WOW factor that many of our brides are looking for to make their wedding an event to remember! We offer chandeliers made of crystal, barnboard and hanging mason jars, wrought iron with pillar candles, and more! One of the most wowing trends have been floral walls… although a labor of love, this may be one of the most rewarding tasks a floral designer can take on! Some floral walls we have installed have taken 56 hours of labor, but the result is breathtaking and sure to awe every guest! Brighten the Palette Depending on the time of year, your wedding can shine with color through the flowers! A spring wedding can have the gorgeous pastels of tulip, hyacinth, clematis, peony, lily of the valley, hydrangea. A summer wedding can have bright pops of color featuring stock, dahlia, rose, hydrangea, calla lily. The fall season lends itself to richer tones using similar summer blooms, just in the fall color pallet. As for winter, we love to use jewel tones such as marsala, emerald, mixed metals, etc. Winter blooms and textures include rose, scabiosa, queen anne’s lace, evergreen, succulent, silver or gold eucalyptus, curly willow, red twig, birch.
