MODERN GEOMETRICS NATALIE & JAYRON
THEME AND DETAILS
silver + sparkle Natalie and Jayron opted for cool silver and glitter, which contrasted nicely with the steel background, black letters and geometric decorative elements. Punctuating these were the collection of wildflowers and greens on the tables, as well as the bride’s bouquet. Natalie: “I loved the edgy silver geometrical décor of the dessert bar and table settings, as well as the retro disco ball for the dance floor. I wanted something cool and unconventional with a touch of glam. As for the geometry concept, my husband and I have entirely different personalities but we’re still better together. The geometry shapes represent the two of us coming together as one despite our different edges.”

RECEPTION When you already have glitter, good music and a dance floor with a glitzy retro disco ball, all you need is some good friends and lots of laughter for a great big party! The play of lights was brilliant; it seemed like there was a canvas of stars at the back, which worked incredibly well with the hanging geometric shapes. Keeping things shiny and sleek, every detail was a subtle addition to the theme, including the silver cake with its geometric motif on the side. From the bride’s sparkly backless silver gown to the disco lights, this was truly a soiree to remember. We especially love how the beautiful silver elements went so well with the greenery and cool geometric shapes and textures.

nature inspired Everything about this wedding was classic and romantic, from the wedding arch and tablescapes that were covered in roses and flowers in perfect bloom, to the lush green vines and leaves, to the elegant decorative elements such as the tea lights in geometric tea light holders and wooden branches. The bridal bouquet’s colours were white and blush pink, with subtle details of lace and succulents for contrast, while the ultimate floral touch were the stalks of cherry blossoms that flanked the wedding aisle as the beautiful bride walked towards her groom to exchange their vows.

CEREMONY Overlooking the ocean and set against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, this bride and groom tied the knot underneath an extravagant wedding arch adorned with blush pink roses and ivy vines. Completing the dĂŠcor were the deep timber floors and wooden decorative elements that contrasted nicely with the elegant floral touches. It was a picture perfect moment: the bride in her wedding gown, with a bejewelled headband and floor length veil, walking towards her groom, who looked charming and dapper in his wedding suit.

RECEPTION Keeping with the nature inspired theme, the reception had long tables with beautiful centrepieces of long tree branches, roses in full bloom, baby’s breath and tea lights for a romantic evening. The bridal party’s table had a clear marquee that was covered in flowers and vines, as well as chandeliers! Everything was bathed in a deep golden glow once the sun had set. In lieu of the couple’s first dance, Vania and Wilson sang a duet to mark the beginning of their life as husband and wife.

shades of blue Keeping the colour theme to just blue was a beautiful touch. From the groom and his groomsmen’s deep navy suits paired with tan shoes to the ombre cake matched with thyme and cobalt place sets, the colour blue set a warm, cosy tone for this celebration. Wooden elements such as thyme, bunches of baby’s breath, leafy vines and tree trunk décor all helped to create a wonderful, intimate setting for this bride and groom’s nuptials.

VENUE
sekeping victoria, george town, penang Mun Shing: “We were in Penang having coffee one day at Awesome Canteen in Sekeping Victoria and fell in love with the space. The space felt raw and unassuming, just the way we liked it. We saw the potential for the space to be turned into something special for a rusticthemed wedding.” With its unpolished walls and preserved vintage storefront, Sekeping Victoria had all the makings of a rustic space. The high ceilings were perfect for the indoor plants (a signature aesthetic of the Sekeping venues), which were a wonderful complement to the theme and décor. It was also a big enough space to hold a party but small enough that it was intimate and cosy.
CEREMONY Rows of white Chiavari chairs filled just half the venue so that guests could enjoy the wedding ceremony up close and comfortably. The place was then transformed into a dinner setting for the reception – a smart way to make good use of the space. “The song I chose for the bridal march was ‘I Just Want To Thank You God’, a song written by Daniel Robinson,” said Mun Shing. The ceremony was a testament to the couple’s faith, and the fact that their relationship was about their love for each other and for God – from saving their first kiss for their special day when they tied the knot to the Bible passage that they chose for a Scripture Reading.

RECEPTION The reception retained all the decorative elements of the wedding ceremony. The wooden dÊcor beautifully complemented the tablescapes of deep blue and navy as well as the blue ombre cake, highlighted with touches of twine and baby’s breath. Completing the look was the bride, who was absolutely resplendent in a beaded gold evening gown. Each guest was also given a deck of inspirational cards, designed by the newlyweds and featuring their favourite quotes and Bible verses.

Isabel: “We both love Wes Anderson’s movies. ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ inspired us to go to India and that’s where Meng Tat proposed. I love all things colourful and pompoms, so instead of sticking to 23 colours, I told Irene from Pepper Suite to just go crazy with the colours and have quirky pieces to fit the Wes Anderson theme.” With the misty forest as a blank slate, bright splashes of colour were added to every aspect of this wedding, from the flowers the bride wore in her hair right down to the flags that created a makeshift ceiling for the reception. There were multi-coloured flags, pompoms and streamers, as well as bright table runners, which created joyful tablescapes complete with bouquets of beautiful wildflowers.

CEREMONY A joyful occasion like a wedding isn’t complete without festive colours – even the father of the bride wore a burnt orange blazer! Tying the knot in a beautiful Lusan Mandongus gown, holding a gorgeous bouquet of wildflowers and with colourful flowers in her hair, the bride’s love for colour, design and quirkiness certainly shone through. Some things were kept simple though, such as the wooden wedding arch and the crates that doubled as side tables.

RECEPTION It’s difficult to conceptualise something as ambitious as throwing together a whole lot of colour in the middle of a forest, but this bride and groom certainly knew that a celebration of their love was nothing without colour. We especially love the makeshift ceiling made out of flags, streamers, ribbons and pompons that hung over the reception area, in lieu of fairy lights. Together with the turquoise tablecloth, mismatched chairs for the bridal table, multi-coloured table runners and bouquets of sunny wildflowers, the entire soiree looked like a fairy festival in the middle of a forest – which, in many ways, it was!

ong and Sky, who are both from the creative industry, decided to take their bridal portraits up a notch by doing something different. Together with their good friend Euhau Leong, who
happens to be the talented photographer behind LOORK, this dream team transported themselves (and us) to the golden age of Hollywood. What inspired the shoot? Rong: Well, the idea came rather easily; we just narrowed it down to what we both love the most. For Sky, movies are everything to him; he’s a huge movie buff. He especially loves the cinematography, the settings, and the dialogue from old movies like Casablanca. As for myself, I’m in love with the vintage style and the artistry of film noir. The hair and makeup, the fashion, the cars, and just the classiness of everything. I learned to do my own makeup and hair by watching tons of YouTube videos. I’m also very inspired by Dita Von Teese. Why was the shoot done in New Zealand? Rong: New Zealand has become a special destination for both of us. Not only did Sky propose to me there, but we also find New Zealand to be a very relaxing place, and we knew we would enjoy the photoshoot more if we did it there. We were also lucky enough to go during the Art Deco Festival in Napier, New Zealand. The festival was perfect for our theme; everybody was dressed like in the 1920’s to 1940’s. The Kiwis were very nice and gave us special treatment when they found out that we were getting married. How did you discover this photographer and what do you like about his style? Rong: Euhau is a very close friend of ours who started his own photography business in New Zealand named LOORK. He offered to take our photos if we flew over to New Zealand, so of course we did! He’s great at taking natural looking lifestyle photos, which is the ultimate reason we love his work so much. He managed to capture our most natural moments while we were just doing our thing. Unlike most photographers, Euhau doesn’t direct the couple too much, and

he doesn’t heavily Photoshop his photos either. Speaking of which, we asked him to colour correct our photos based on the movie Catch Me If You Can, which is a movie that Sky and I like a lot. Most lifestyle photographers find it difficult to shoot bridal portraits but you seem to do it easily. How did you put the couple at ease to achieve the kind of results you wanted? Euhau: Some of the most charming photographs that have ever been captured are often candid moments where the persons in front of the camera are relaxed and being themselves. Setting the scene is crucial, and the couple needs
to feel that the photographer understands them and is able to provide them with the right directions. I always get to know my clients from the early planning stages and find out things that they like, some of their memories, etc. so we are familiar with each other. During the shoot, it is important for them to connect with each other. If they are too shy, we break the ice with jokes or provide directions that will encourage them to forget about the camera and just interact with each other. Once that happens, all I have to do is sit back and snap. Fun tip: it’s not a bad idea to have the couple indulge in a few sips of champagne or wine before the shoot to help them loosen up!

A GLIMPSE OF THE WORLD THROUGH HIS LENS
Adam Ong might have caught our eye with his journalistic skill, but it is also his observant nature and creative talent that have all combined to make him immensely sought after. There is a story and distinct personality to each and every set of his bridal portraits. Truly this is a photographer who doesn’t only capture photos but makes art.

I believe that is a learning path that many of us photographers walk before we decide on a particular sub-branch of photography. What are your other interests besides photography? Traveling and scuba diving. Which do you prefer, shooting bridal portraits or actual day wedding photos? For me, they are two different things. Bridal portraits emphasise the character of the couple as well as the interaction between them, which motivates me to appreciate the couple better. On the other hand, with actual day wedding photos, I always aim to capture the emotions of the couple, the people around them, and the joyous atmosphere. You have amazing photojournalistic skill and are talented in incorporating cultural and surrounding elements, especially in your destination

This photo was taken spontaneously. I love it because I know the artist, whose name is Adam too. He is a painter in Montmartre and we have known each other for four years. I admire his work and his personality. He has received me and my clients with a warm welcome each time I have photographed there. To me, the photo tells of more than the love between the couple; it also conveys the friendship of two strangers who have been brought together through their love for art.
