Pandemic weddings can be really special. There’s something about capturing intimate moments in the privacy and comfort of your own home, plus being at home doesn’t mean it cannot also be sexy and sophisticated. Phillane Cheng of Med Kärlek Inc: “We wanted to showcase a different kind of wedding and perhaps embrace a new normal. Pandemic weddings can still be special and beautiful. We designed this shoot with newly engaged young couples in mind, and we wanted them to know that a small home wedding can also be a special one. We wanted ‘the wedding’ to be achievable, and that’s why this shoot was done in an HDB apartment.”

The ivy-covered walls and various warm wooden textures (including the thatched roof and the barn interior) lent a moody yet ethereal vibe to the day. Contrasting the bright white blooms and light pastels were dark eucalyptus leaves and textured stalks of wheat and ferns. All of this was beautifully complemented by the bride’s low-backed bridal gown that was covered in lace and floral appliques, styled with gorgeous loose waves and light touches of sparkly glamour.

ce r e mo n y The beautiful high ceiling and minimalist walls of the chapel perfectly framed the couple as they said “I do” in front of less than 100 guests. The venue was a stunning choice for their intimate wedding, which was attended by only their closest friends and family. “Walking down the aisle, surrounded by familiar faces and feeling the love and support from all our guests was incredible,” shared Stefanie.

Sto ne s o f t h e Y a r r a Va l l e y, Vi ct o r i a The Barn is the main dining room at Stones of the Yarra Valley, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking 200 acres of vineyards in the expansive Great Dividing Range of regional Victoria. Located about an hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD, in the beautiful wine country of Yarra Valley, its unique ceiling, dramatic setting and decorative flourish are just several reasons this is such a wedding favourite, particularly for rustic themed receptions. Stefanie: “It was the first venue we visited, and it was our last! Hands down, it was one of the best decisions we made for the wedding.”

r e ce p t i o n It’s hard to believe this bride actually brought her wedding concept and vision to life without a wedding decorator and planner. In lieu of a chandelier, there was a lush floral bouquet as a centrepiece, bursting with a variety of rich blooms, greenery and stalks of wheat. Fairy lights twinkled from the ceiling as guests toasted the newlyweds and their sweet union. Congratulations!

i n t r i ca t e d e t a i l s +t e x t u r e s The amazing level of detail and all the different textures came together to create the overall look of this wedding. The newlyweds loved the venue but wanted a modern, elegant theme, so they made it work. Adding lots of flowers, fairy lights and soft colours to the cobblestones and vintage tiles, they let the textures and details do the talking, and the results were just beautiful.

t e a ce r e mo n y There’s something romantic about having your wedding tea ceremony in a space like this. The dÊcor gave the proceedings a traditional and vintage feel, especially with the Peranakan patterns and textures. We love everything about this, from the furniture and teacups to the bride’s cheongsam. What a perfect way to celebrate the bringing together of two families! 4 0

ce r e mo n y Beneath the beautiful floral arch, with the rustic staircase in the background providing an element of elegance, the newlyweds exchanged their vows in the courtyard. Even though it rained a little prior to the ceremony, the slightly cloudy sky only served to add a touch of moody romance to the day. Being a musician, the groom surprised the bride with his own rendition of ‘Canon in D’ as she walked down the aisle towards him – a truly romantic moment indeed.

r e ce p t i o n Having travelled far and wide to be there, the bride and groom’s family certainly made the happy couple’s wedding reception a night to remember. There was much music, dance and laughter, and the groom didn’t disappoint, once again pulling out his musical talents to surprise his new bride (and their guests) with a rendition of ‘Wonderful Tonight’. To wrap up the intimate celebration, there was a video message to the guests, featuring many of their special moments together.

tropica l l us h Having an intimate garden wedding at home made it simple for the newlyweds, who opted for joyful pops of colour in bright hues of orange, pink, yellow and red. These blooms were complemented by lush additions of leaves and ferns, set against rattan textures. The bride kept it simple with a lace mermaid-style gown, complete with an elegant train and a simple floral hairpiece in a braided updo. The couple got their guests to wear navy or monochromatic colours, so as you can imagine, the photos were a vision to behold! 5 4

The br i d e ’ s ho m e Eelaine: “My home seemed like the perfect venue to have our wedding, as it holds a lot of memories for Dennis and me. The house I’ve been staying in is a rented black and white house. Most of the exterior was an addition designed by my dad, whose influence relied very heavily on the Balinese style, which my family and I love. Sadly, we’re moving out next year, so I figured we might as well grab the opportunity to do something nice and take some pictures!”

ce r e mo n y At this socially distanced wedding, in front of a cosy 10 guests, the lovebirds exchanged their vows and became man and wife. Despite the small wedding, there were still a few blunders here and there, such as the bride and groom forgetting the rings during the ceremony. Luckily, they were at home, so all the groom had to do was run upstairs to get them! Eelaine also shared: “No matter how small the wedding, I realised the importance of a walk-in rehearsal because I found that it was one of the very few things that felt a bit disorganised. Everyone was still standing around when I started walking in. 6 0

From the bride’s seashell halo crown (instead of a tiara) and beautiful two-piece gown with an elegant train and intricate lace detailing, to the wheat stalks and bridal bouquet, it was all picture perfect. Even though the Future World Exhibition by teamLab at ArtScience Museum, Singapore, is highly Instagrammable, few photographers have taken it upon themselves to capture the set in its entirety, let alone done it well. Thanks, Andri Tei Photography, for showing us that it's possible.

ALDO Why did you choose this location? I have always liked the Future World Exhibition, as the interactive light makes for some atypical abstract images. The darker ambient light also gives a different sense of romance. What were the technical difficulties involved in this photoshoot? Lighting was definitely a challenge as I was totally reliant on the exhibition's display lighting. But that also made it interesting because in terms of the feel and composition, sometimes less is more and makes for a more minimalist play on the light and shadows/shapes. Another thing was having to deal with crowds. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad on a weekday, but it still involved patience and waiting for the crowd to move along. The most difficult one was the ‘Crystal Universe’ installation where it’s narrow and the most picturesque of all the exhibits. We needed it to be completely free of anyone in the background, so a bit of luck and timing were needed in order for us to shoot.

Sometimes, instead of drawing inspiration from other weddings, why not look to artists? We love how these talented vendors came together to create this masterpiece. This is truly worth savouring, not just because it looks so magical, but also because it breaks the mould of what wedding dĂŠcor could be. Here, Pei Li of 8dec talks more about the process they went through for this styled shoot. Why did you choose this location? Maison Miaja is a warehouse located just beyond Robertson Quay. Our team searched high and low to find the perfect light-filled art gallery to create the modern, minimalist aesthetic we had envisioned for this shoot. What inspired this shoot? We were inspired by the work of artists that we admire. For the solemnisation backdrop, This Humid House masterfully created a wall-mounted installation that carried the weightiness of a Robert Morris felt sculpture, using foraged seaweed and the most delicate wisteria-like petrea volubilis. Inside a private room, an enchanting dinner experience inspired by a Julie Mehretu painting unfolded. A sense of lightness and joy was conveyed by the suspension of clouds and bougainvillea, punctuated by pops of colour and unexpected ingredients including beans, rocks and gourds. Upon the table lay simple floral arrangements against chunks of clay and rich piles of turmeric, influenced by the work of Anish Kapoor.

WEDDINGS ARE NEVER GOING TO BE THE SAME AGAIN. AS CELEBRATIONS GET DOWNSIZED, WEDDING DRESSES, TOO, ARE FOLLOWING SUIT – DOWNSCALING IN SIZE BUT CERTAINLY NOT IN STYLE. FOR THIS SEASON’S GOWNS, OBSERVE HOW THEY ARE STILL ABLE TO CAPTURE TRENDS, ALBEIT IN A MORE SUBTLE WAY. ONE OF THESE UNIQUE LOOKS JUST MIGHT BE THE TIMELESS PIECE YOU NEED AND WON’T REGRET FOR THE MANY YEARS TO COME.

Less is definitely more, as countless celebrities have proven to us over the years. Behold these: a structured dress with a slight tweak to the usual sweetheart neckline, an effortless slip dress with spaghetti straps, an embroidered tank top paired with trousers, thigh-high slits to show off those legs, or even a one-shouldered gown with a giant satin bow. Going minimalist doesn’t mean compromising on style. If anything, it accentuates your chosen feature.

No matter how small weddings become, utterly romantic floral bridal gowns will never be out of place. Say goodbye to the long train in favour of slimmer silhouettes. Floral textures and details are an exquisite touch that look great on camera – an added bonus in this social media age. Choose a design befitting the scale of your wedding, and don’t be afraid to combine styles, like the Daalarna Couture gown shown here. 1 0 0

What better time to “wear your heart on your sleeve” than at your wedding? Sleeves are in for 2021, be they long or short, fitted or voluminous. Perfect for any style, from off-shoulder to asymmetrical one-shoulder designs, sleeves add flair and sensuality, making a bold fashion statement without going over the top.
