he wilderness is where you discover your heart again, restore your soul and find your way back to love. This romantic, whimsical shoot is the work of a wonderful team that desires to
share that beauty by transforming an open space into a romantic yard that sets the perfect mood for the lovely couple, Melissa and Jonathan. Melvin, the photographer: “We wanted to bring a whimsical and pastel touch to the natural surroundings. It’s rare for Singaporeans to use a wedding arch for pre-wedding shoots, so we decided to show how it could totally transform the landscape. The laughter and smiles set just the right tone for the shoot.” Eunice, the stylist: “The concept was to create a rustic and whimsical yet elegant setup that would stand out in the middle of the field. The main backdrop was an arch decorated with branches, foliage and fresh flowers. We decided on a pastel colour palette, but added some red for an extra bit of drama. A chandelier and a vintage chair were also added for elegance and to evoke a timeless, classic feel. The idea was to create a beautiful and natural setting that would set the mood and bring out the love and emotions between the couple.”

Vien and Michael’s wedding will certainly transport you back in time. With simple yet stunning floral arrangements, vintage decorations, 60s style one-piece dresses in sakura pink with simple white bows for the bridal party, the couple’s retro inspired forget-me-not blue attire, a gorgeous vintage headpiece, the groom’s super dapper polka dot bow tie and cool guitar pin, and the succulent boutonnieres, it all amounted to a wedding that was not only memorable but also stylishly retro.

The CEREMONY The bride who wanted a beautiful garden with a cheerful atmosphere managed to make her dream come true with the help of the couple’s wedding planner, Eva. The rooftop of The Langham Hotel was transformed into a gorgeous garden with lush greenery and pink and white flowers along the wedding aisle. Adding to the elegance were the white chiavari chairs, long reception tables draped with white tablecloths, square, gold place settings, and simple centrepieces of pink blooms in varying heights. Walking down the aisle in her simple and feminine Monique Lhuillier wedding gown, Vien looked comfortable and elegant. The groom, Michael, couldn’t hold back his tears, and neither could the guests. It was a meaningful, emotional and intimate affair.

The Reception In the evening, the couple’s 80 guests were treated to a wonderful singing performance by the bride and groom, accompanied by a band comprising their friends. There was also a custom made neon sign of the couple’s names, which lent a cool, pop feel to the celebration. “One of our favourite parts of the whole day was when I was singing on the stage, surrounded by the people whom I love and who love me,” Vien added.

The bride’s love of flowers was evident in the selection of colours and types of flowers used in the beautiful bouquets, headpieces and décor throughout the wedding. Another element of the wedding, the fabric, was also cause for excitement, as Katrina was bowled over by the selection of fabrics to choose from. Though it was overwhelming at first to figure out what to select, with the help from the dressmaker and her assistants, Katrina was able to quickly narrow down the fabrics to those that best suited her style and personality – intricate white lace for her gown, and dark blue lace for her bridesmaids.

The CEREMONY Held at St Thomas’ Anglican Church in North Sydney, the ceremony was indeed a beautiful one. There was a certain elegant cosiness to the wedding ceremony, with the classic gothic sandstone architecture, grand high ceilings and white stately pillars, dark wooden furniture, and stunning stained glassed windows, all surrounded by beautiful lawns and gardens. However, according to Gordon, the best and most memorable part of the wedding for him was seeing Katrina in her dress walking down the aisle.
The Reception As the bride and groom had many overseas guests, they wanted to show them why they both loved Sydney, as well as the great food and wine that Australia has to offer, which was why they chose the Opera Point Marquee as their wedding reception venue. The Opera Point Marquee, which is located on the picturesque harbour foreshore, treated the couple’s 240 guests to breathtaking and sprawling views of the Sydney Harbour and the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. To top it all off, the venue was adorned with amazing hanging baskets of beautiful flowers in an array of colours. In fact, it looked like a magical garden had sprung up above the guests and the dance floor.

Whether you go the route of DIY or decide to hire a truckload of talented people to make your wedding dream come true, it is essential to always get help. “While planning your wedding, maintain open communication, apply tact and diplomacy, and at the same time stay true to your plans. Be receptive to good suggestions, maintain a good sense of humour, and of course, involve as many people who want to help as you can. Wedding celebrations are not just about the two of you. Never go it alone, as you risk burning out.�

VENUE
Sekeping Tenggiri, a little slice of paradise tucked away in the heart of Bangsar, was the chosen venue for the couple. With its charming red brick facade, minimalist decorations, lovely green foliage and serene, aqua dipping pool, this natural and shabby chic atmosphere fit well with the couple’s theme. “We picked Sekeping Tenggiri because it had a homely atmosphere, was cosy and quaint, and had a lot of greenery. We dressed up the venue a little, and voila, we had our theme of pastel colours to bring out the sweetness of love, and shades of green, which is truly rustic and symbolic of new life in spring.”

GATECRASHING CEREMONY The gatecrashing ceremony is an important element in Chinese weddings, as it is where the groom has to go through a series of ‘challenges’ set by the bridesmaids in order to fetch his bride. For Audrey and Robin, Sekeping Tenggiri proved to be a good venue. From her vantage point inside the master bedroom, surrounded by floor to ceiling glass windows, Audrey could watch the fun and excitement as her groom and his groomsmen performed the different challenges. The landscaping of the venue also lent a picturesque backdrop for the day’s activities as well.

aving one’s bridal portraits done in Paris is nothing new, but having a ballerina style shoot at the renowned ballet shoes shop, Repetto, holds a deeper meaning for a ballerina. It was
no longer about just doing a shoot; Joe of Acapella Photography created something dear to the bride’s heart, and definitely made this trip so much more meaningful for her. Of course, you can view the rest of the stunning portraits that were taken in Paris on our website. Which one came first – a destination shoot in Paris or the ballerina shoot? Both ideas were birthed at the same time. I wanted to add the ballerina concept to personalise their Paris shoot. Elaborate on the dance shoot. I could visualise in my mind that seeing her in action would look better than just a stagnant pose. Thus I made her dance in the streets and, in some scenarios, subtly included the groom as a passerby. We wanted to document the shoot in a photojournalistic style, from warming up at home to even shopping for shoes at the world renowned Repetto. That brand has great significance to most ballerinas. It was a great overall picture of a ballerina’s life. What was it like for her, trying to hold a pose in the midst of a busy street? This is usually the most difficult part. There will always be curious crowds. What we did was to wait for the right moment. Sometimes we had to wait for a couple of minutes to get the crowds to disperse before we continued. Nevertheless we got a few good shots with passersby in them. We just have to learn to adapt when doing street photography.

ust so you know, these bridal portraits are of a real couple. While most photographers find it easier to style models for conceptual shoots, Simeon Quarrie of VIVIDA took on the
challenge of styling a real couple. The results are extraordinary, worthy of applause for having such great art direction and the capability to turn ideas into reality. What was the concept for this shoot? This concept tells the story
of a man who falls in love with a girl who is not easily attainable or
available. She is held back by the ties and strings of circumstance, opinion, and the difficulties involved in leaving one’s family for a new life. The story develops to show passion, longing and desire, whilst also portraying separation.

Who came up with this concept? The overall concept came from me, and then I worked particularly with the bride Lalita and my production assistant Kornel to make this happen. This also has an unintentional nod to the Coppélia story. It was in my subconscious from a performance I saw at a wedding I shot in Venice. Share with us a little bit about the dress that she is wearing. The outfits of both the bride and the accompanying models had to be put together from scratch. This was because I had a very specific look in mind that I couldn’t buy off the shelf. The ladies’ outfits were made up of a combination of 18th and 19th century underwear. How long did you take to do this entire shoot? The actual time on set was seven hours, though this time included makeup, dressing, scene setting, shooting and pack down. WWW.THEWEDDINGNOTEBOOK.COM

What are your other interests besides photography? Travelling! This is perhaps the best interest a photographer can find. Through the exposure to different places, people and cultures, I find new inspiration to keep shooting. Your images look like there is a certain rhythm to them. What goes through your mind when you shoot? I always start a photoshoot project with a rough storyline that explains the background of the location, and how the people who appear in the photos are associated with it – although sometimes this storyline is not presented very clearly in the final set of pics. I like to always let my viewers form their own interpretation/ conclusion, but it helps to give a set of pics a consistent theme and feel. When I shoot, I let the storyline play in my mind while letting my subjects act out the various scenes.
