water + forest
Celeste: “Our wedding concept was a mix of both our Chinese surnames, which means ‘forest’ and ‘expanse of water’. Since a wedding is a union, we decided to combine both these elements into our wedding theme.” Representing the element of water were the calm shades of blue in the bride’s floral bouquet and the deep hues of the wildflowers for décor, as well as a variety of white flowers. Additional elements included the floor to ceiling windows of the venue, with ghost chairs wrapped in blue chiffon. Contrasting the water element were forest elements in the form of wooden decorative objects, terrariums of plants, and twine for the bouquets.

CEREMONY With beautiful floor to ceiling windows and an intimate number of friends and family in attendance, the ceremony allowed for a very heartfelt exchange of vows between the bride and groom. The expansive windows also meant there was a lot of natural light, which helped set the stage for an emotional moment between the bride and groom, as well as for their guests. Despite being indoors, the solemnisation ceremony had decorative water and forest elements that represented these two people coming together as one. The bride and groom also incorporated their theme into their outfits – a light, casual white dress and flowers in her hair for her, and a blue geometric print shirt and boutonniere for him.

RECEPTION A forest sanctuary couldn’t be more perfect for this couple, from the simple centrepieces of baby’s breath in jars and wine bottles tied with jute twine, to overflowing bunches of wildflowers and the lush trees around them. Keeping with the casual and intimate theme of the entire party, the bride and groom were relaxed and all smiles, revelling in their union and celebrating with their loved ones – a perfect testament indeed to the tranquillity of a forest and the calming nature of water.

relaxed bohemian Relaxed and chilled out was the very definition of this wedding, from the bride’s unconventional outfit choice of a crop top and skirt, topped with a leather jacket to protect against the chill of the Austrian Alps, to her second outfit of a billowing chiffon wedding dress that looked positively majestic against the mountains. Meanwhile, the groom and his groomsmen looked very dapper indeed in their suspenders and bow ties, complete with subtle prints and sneaky polka dot socks. Jennifer: “The style was more or less bohemian – all the girls were wearing flower crowns in our hair, even our 84-year-old grandmother!”

CEREMONY It was an intimate affair for this couple’s nuptials at Lisa Alm, set against the majestic backdrop of the Austrian Alps, where the couple’s best friends officiated the ceremony and the groomsmen and bridesmaids presented them with emotional speeches and heartfelt messages. “It was the best decision for us to have all our best friends and family together for three days! All of us were so happy to be celebrating this together – they surprised us with so many big and little things,” said Jennifer.

RECEPTION The surprises didn’t end at the ceremony but continued well into the reception. It was clear that this couple had inspired all their friends and family with their outpouring of love for each other and for their guests. Not only did the bridal party produce a saxophonist, they even organised a flash mob! Everyone was on their feet dancing the night away. “The whole party was perfect and so much fun – the last guests went to bed at 8am!” As for the next day, the couple knew just what their guests would need after a night of hard partying – everyone got a Hangover Kit.

simply green
The thing about having a beautiful venue is that you can save on your décor. Keeping it simple allows your mind to focus on what truly matters. Inspired by the classic Martinique Banana Leaf wallpaper from the Beverly Hills Hotel, this couple went for an all green look with pineapples and hints of gold, and it looked amazing. Playing with a mix of greens to create more texture and using very minimal flowers, it was anything but boring. The unique bridesmaids’ bouquets looked great with the ladies’ simple black dresses. What we would never have imagined was how perfectly the bride’s gold dress by Jane Hill would match the whole theme.

CEREMONY Fifty of Skye and Nicholas’ guests flew in to Uluwatu, the most beautiful part of Bali, for this intimate affair. Their stunning cliff-top setting at The Istana, where they exchanged their vows on the lawn while the ocean sparkled far below, was truly breathtaking. We love the lush wedding arch mixed with ferns and those pineapples along the aisle between rows of wooden cross-backed chairs. “One of the most memorable moments was during our ceremony. We had both written our own vows, and it was a heartwarming moment when we read them to each other,” said Skye.

RECEPTION The setting sun ushered in an evening of candle-lit celebration on the lawn. With those wooden chairs, pineapples, some low floral arrangements, and tea lights, the place was transformed into a great space for an intimate and meaningful reception. The mix of Viking and round wooden tables also helped to make it less structured. The personalised details certainly made all the difference. “My Mum and I DIY-ed the napkins, place cards and table numbers,” said Skye. “We had beer coolers as our favours, which Nick had designed to look like wedding invitations.”

rustic + dreamy Alongside the wooden decorative textures was a gorgeous colour palette of dusty blue, gold and soft pastel pink, tied together with pops of gold and gilded elements, giving the whole wedding a dreamy, rustic feel. Although set in a pinewood forest, soft baby’s breath, white and yellow roses, lush vine leaves, and ferns added an element of nature to the décor. The bride and groom had thought through every detail – from the signs and dessert bar, to the wooden hangers, and vow notebooks. “Both of us like to work with crafts – Kenny loves to do woodwork and I like to do smaller personalised DIY crafts,” said Grace, adding: “He ended up building the registration tables, dessert bar, ceremony doors, crates and signs while I managed the art and design.”
TEA CEREMONY Keeping things modern yet traditional was the tea ceremony that was held at the Enderong House, just a little further up from Tanarimba at Janda Baik. Held before the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom and their respective families, bridesmaids and groomsmen were decked out in traditional wear – a Qun Kwa for the bride and traditional Chinese suit for the groom. The space was decorated with vintage wicker baskets, paper flowers and hand fans, and a gorgeous Chinese tea set for the ceremony. The giant paper flowers served as wedding dÊcor as well as being the perfect backdrop for the tea ceremony.

CEREMONY Despite having a garden ceremony outdoors, the groom made standalone wooden doors for the bridal procession to walk through and down the aisle – it also served as a great photo prop for guests! As a special touch, there were packets of flower petals for the ceremony, as well as a vintage photo corner with dusty blue parasols and flowers. The wedding arch had a dreamy curtain draped over it, and buckets of baby’s breath lined the aisle between rows of gilded Tiffany chairs. Grace: “Everything was so perfect, the DIY ceremony door created a very different mood and even the march-in song was in sync – it was an emotional rollercoaster for everyone there when we exchanged our vows.”

RECEPTION An all-wood interior, fairy lights and long tables with simple floral centrepieces created an understated yet glamorous reception. It was undoubtedly a party to remember, from the couple’s first dance (which they had been practicing for two and a half months), to the best man’s speech that made everyone erupt in laughter and the bridesmaid’s speech that made everyone cry. “We knew from day one that we wanted to have a meaningful wedding. Of course, we knew we wouldn’t want to spend too much money but we also didn’t want to compromise the décor of our wedding. We felt that a personalised wedding would create a different feeling for our guests and us,” said Grace.

CONCEPT
I
t seems as if having your pets at your wedding is no longer a crazy idea. From bridal portraits to weddings, these couples are not shying away from having their loved ones and precious
pets there with them. The décor might be a lot simpler but it doesn’t stop the day from being special and unique. We’re so happy that couples are beginning to get the meaning of a wedding day – a day of celebrating lives (pets included)! How did you end up with this venue? We wanted a place that was both cosy and meaningful to both of us, and since we both love cats, we thought, “Why not have it at a cat café?” It was a good opportunity for some guests who were initially afraid of cats to get over their fear of them. Many thought the cats were strays or had past abandonment histories, so it was an eye-opener for some of them. Talk about the décor. We kept things quite simple because we had to ensure the cats wouldn’t chew or destroy the wedding decorations. After deciding on our colours (primarily white, pink, blue and lavender), we DIY-ed most of our decorations according to the theme. It may be a weird combination but we also love dinosaurs, so our ring holders were two dinosaurs that were sprayed gold. We just wanted to have fun! Sometimes things may not go your way, so just let go and enjoy the whole process.

ASTER & MAX
CONCEPT
A
s the founders of a creative agency, this couple was inclined towards the artsy and quirky – naturally. We love this approach to their conceptual bridal portraits; they didn’t
overdo it yet their inexpensive geometrical paper masks made a regular photoshoot and space uniquely stylish. What was the concept behind your bridal portraits? We are animal lovers with two dogs and two cats between us. Somehow every bit of the wedding (from the engagement shoot and invitation cards to the venue décor and wedding favours) had an animal element to it. And we couldn’t resist having our three-year-old Dachshund, Duncan, in the shoot somehow. As for the masks, I (Max) chose a moose because I wanted something more geometrical and interesting, while Aster chose the fox simply because it looked good and would be more stylish compared to a rabbit or a cat. We were both looking at it from a photography and photo effect point of view. Prior to the actual shoot, we had a great and fruitful session over dinner with Thomas of The Peeping Thom, discussing shoot locations and the art direction. With his wedding photography expertise, he gave us some very fantastic options that we were so thankful for! The three of us were of a single mind on the concept and kind of output we envisaged, and had a lot of fun together materialising it. The contrast of the stylish masks against the fish market is brilliant. Do you want to talk about that? The most memorable part for me is a draw between the waltz under the trees and walking in a fish market in a moose mask, and not being able to see where I was going. Aster’s mask had better visibility. The shoot at the Fishery Port had to start at 5am, so we got up at 2.30am. Witnessing the awe-inspiring art of makeup and hair (for Aster) was definitely interesting, even though we had worked till midnight the day before for a big client project.

My wife, then fiancée, auditioned for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra four years ago and joined the cello section.
