letter from cameron Welcome to The Wedding Standard’s first online magazine! We are thrilled to share with you an inspiring publication that will help connect couples with artists and venues on the Central Coast of California! Our purpose is to connect wedding-planning-couples to the great wealth of talent, love and creativity that exists in the wedding industry on the Central Coast while sparing you the weeding-through-the-worthy-vendors process. We exist to make wedding planning an enjoyable and inspiring experience for couples so they can focus on personalizing their wedding without the worry of “Who do I trust?!” While planning a wedding can feel like arranging a three ring circus at times, it is your chance to throw the most custom party of your lives! It’s the opportunity to celebrate TWO becoming ONE…with style; your style. Your wedding should be a reflection of who you are as a brand-new-person! At the end of the day you’re not just planning a party, you’re designing an event. You will craft this celebration around what and who is significant to you, what colors and flowers speak to you, and the importance of your traditions or ceremonies. While there are thousands of vendors out there who offer “wedding services,” you want to book the unique ones who are filled with integrity, creativity, and passion for their craft. Those with the highest standard for detail and customer service who see their work as art, not just “work.” You deserve to plan alongside vendors who will help cater their services to help you perfect your special day! This e-zine is a small glimpse into a wonderful world of weddings here on the Central Coast. We are so thankful to all of those who have contributed to kick off our first edition! Hopefully more will follow in the years to come with many more contributors and creative concepts. Until then, we hope The Wedding Standard will help you find the wedding artists and venues that will make your event an expression of just how awesome and unique you are! Much Love! Cameron Ingalls Photographer and Promoter

about jess of paper sky If you love this publication Jessica is to blame! This was all... her... idea. It happened one day when I was visiting her shop, Paper Sky, talking about with her about all of the changes we were making with The Wedding Standard. She blurted out, “We could make an online magazine!” My first response was, “You’re crazy...” My second was, “Why not?! Let’s do this!” Many months of early morning coffee brainstorming sessions, a creative team of talented artists, and countless late night hours staring into the glow of our laptop monitors have made this magazine happen and we all have Jess to thank! She has spearheaded the layout and design and has given much more than any of us will know. If you don’t know Jess I encourage you to stop by Paper Sky in the heart of downtown SLO. It’s like taking a walk through her wonderfully creative brain. She is a fantastic designer and truly a wonderful person. Her dry humor, profuse talent and down to earth humility have made this magazine a joy to create together! And if you’re real nice to her maybe we’ll do it all again next year.
about april of april flowers April is synonymous with all things beautiful. I mean her name is one of the most amazing months of the year for peets sake! April… the start of the season when life and color springs sporadically from the dead of winter. It’s no wonder that she is obsessed with flowers and insanely skilled at arranging them in never before imagined possibilities! She has an instinct for details in design all the while aware of the bigger picture. April has been so valuable to the heart and flow of this publication. She spent many mornings brainstorming and creating with us; sometimes baby in tow. Thanks to April for making time during this special season of the start of motherhood. Spring has certainly sprung for April and her family!
about whitney of goldspark Whitney is one of those people that come along and is a treasure to those she serves. That has been the case for Jessica at Paper Sky over the past few years and most recently for us with this publication. Because Whitney has collaborated with Jess on invitations and design in the past she was a seamless contributor to our design process. The two of them share the same humorous creative brain and because of that lots of laughs were had and a magazine was born. She had a beautiful baby before our launch but continued to deliver content because she’s just that awesome! We are excited to see her career as a calligrapher and letter press craftswoman grow in the future.

How long have you been working in the wedding industry and how did you get your start?
BEFORE COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL I DID HAIR AND MAKEUP FOR MY BEAUTIFUL FRIEND SHANNON'S WEDDING. HER HUSBAND JORDAN WAS ACTUALLY THE ONE TO SUGGEST I PURSUE A CAREER IN HAIR AND MAKEUP, WHICH WAS ODDLY INSIGHTFUL COMING FROM A GUY'S GUY, MARINE! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?! THANK YOU FOR THE AMAZING SUGGESTION SHANNON AND JORDY!
What is your utmost favorite thing or moment that happens at a wedding and why? I LOVE WHEN THE BRIDE SEE'S HER COMPLETE LOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME. HAIR + MAKEUP + DRESS + SPARKLES= MAGIC!
What inspired this shoot?
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL BRIDES OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS EXPRESS A DESIRE TO HAVE A DIFFERENT LOOK FOR THEIR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION, SO WHEN WHITNEY FROM THE WEDDING STANDARD SUGGESTED THIS SHOOT I WAS 100% ON BOARD! I LOVE THAT ELEMENT OF SURPRISE THAT COMES FROM A SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT OF HAIR AND MAKEUP. I WANTED TO KEEP THE TRANSITION REALISTIC; SOMETHING THAT WOULD ONLY TAKE A FEW MINUTES BUT WOULD ADD THAT "WOW" FACTOR. I ALSO WANTED TO INCORPORATE FUN TRENDS WE HAVE ALL BEEN SEEING ON THE RUNWAY BUT HAVEN'T BEEN TRANSLATED INTO BRIDAL STYLES YET. I HOPE YOU LIKE WHAT WE'VE COME UP WITH
What trends would you love to see up and coming in the wedding industry? WHAT I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO SEE IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY IS NOT NECESSARILY A TREND BUT RATHER MORE OF A SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND CREATIVITY. JUST HAVE FUN WITH YOUR STYLE, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, AND WEAR WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL.
If you could use three words to describe yourself what would they be? HAPPY. CREATIVE. HAPPY.

I'D BEEN WANTING TO DO A POOL-SIDE WEDDING STYLED SHOOT FOR A WHILE NOW. THE WEDDING STANDARD E-MAGAZINE WAS THE PERFECT REASON FOR US TO ALL COME TOGETHER AND PULL IT OFF! I'D SEEN A POOL IMAGE ON PINTEREST AND RAN WITH THAT! WHEN I ASKED DAVIA LEE EVENTS AND TWIGSS FLORAL STUDIO TO JOIN IN, THEY BROUGHT EVEN MORE AMAZING IDEAS THAT REALLY MADE THIS SHOOT COHESIVE!
Where are you from and what brought you to the Central Coast? I'M ORIGINALLY FROM PLEASANTON, 3 HOURS NORTH OF SAN LUIS OBISPO IN THE BAY AREA. I WAS BORN AND RAISED THERE, AND MOVED DOWN TO SAN LUIS OBISPO A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS AGO WITH MY BOYFRIEND ADAM TO ATTEND CAL POLY. MY BEST FRIEND WENT TO CAL POLY FIRST AND CONVINCED ME THAT SLO WAS AWESOME. I'M SO THANKFUL SHE DID BECAUSE I COULDN'T IMAGINE LIVING ANYWHERE ELSE.
How long have you been working in the wedding industry and how did you get your start?
I'VE BEEN WORKING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY FOR 3 YEARS NOW. I ORIGINALLY STARTED OUT WANTING TO BE A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER, AND THEN REALIZED I COULD COMBINE MY LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND FASHION BY PHOTOGRAPHING WEDDINGS! WHEN I MOVED DOWN TO SAN LUIS OBISPO A FEW YEARS AGO I SECOND SHOT A WEDDING AND INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!! THAT YEAR I SHOT 9 WEDDINGS ON MY OWN AND THE REST IS HISTORY.

What is your utmost favorite thing or moment that happens at a wedding and why?
I LOVE THE TOASTS THAT THE BRIDE AND GROOM'S FAMILY AND FRIENDS GIVE. I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF DYING OF LAUGHTER AND IN AWE OF HOW SWEET THE SPEECHES ARE. AND I ALSO LOVE SEEING THE DECOR EACH COUPLE CHOOSES WHICH MAKES THEIR WEDDING SO UNIQUE TO THEM!
What trends would you love to see up and coming in the wedding industry?
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE ELABORATE SET-UPS AT THE ALTER FOR THE CEREMONY. I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF TIMES BRIDES PUT FORTH A LOT OF EFFORT IN OTHER PLACES AND THAT AREA JUST GETS LEFT WITH A FEW FLOWERS. I'VE SEEN SOME SUPER AWESOME IDEAS SO I HOPE TO SEE THAT MORE IN THE FUTURE!!
If you could use three words to describe yourself what would they be? TALKATIVE. SILLY. DRIVEN.
Coffee or Tea?
TEA! I DON'T REALLY LIKE THE SMELL OF COFFEE AND I CAN'T DRINK THAT MUCH CAFFEINE. I GET JITTERY... HAHA.
If you were an animal what kind would you be and why?
I WOULD BE A CUTE DOGGY WHO LIVES WITH A LOVING FAMILY! I ADORE MY MINI GOLDENDOODLE, SAWYER, AND THINK HE HAS SUCH AN AWESOME LIFE. HE NAPS ALL DAY, COOKIES, BELLY RUBS... WHAT A GOOD LIFE!

How to Avoid Wed Looking past the ceremony to your life together
Cold feet or nerves? Whatever you call it, it’s a common affliction, and the fodder for endless jokes. Movies like “Runaway Bride” and “While You Were Sleeping” poke fun at our tendency toward wedding day jitters One cause of unease stems from the stress of planning a wedding. Today’s nuptials can require a lot of planning, and with it a lot of stress. There are many decisions to be made; lots of vendors to meet. In addition, it is not uncommon for couples, and their families to incur large amounts of debt to pull off the wedding of their dreams. If the preparations have you uptight, perhaps it’s time to step back and reevaluate your wedding day plan. Agree on your budget and then stick to it. What “ingredients” are the most important to you? The photographer? The dress? The caterer? Maximize on those and minimize the components that aren’t priorities.

How well do you resolve your conflicts? What are your family backgrounds? Do you manage money well? Are you blending a family? All of these issues can become insurmountable if you don’t have the tools to deal with them. Every couple has their issues. The key is knowing how to handle yours; learning how to accept your differences and capitalize on them. Consider contacting a marriage counselor – many provide pre-marital counseling. Ask around and see who is recommended. Another possibility is your local church or synagogue. Or try googling to see what’s available in your area. Regardless of the price, consider it an investment into your future, and insurance against the wedding day jitters. It’s great to plan for your wedding day, but why not plan for your marriage?
VICKEY KRIWINSKI MARRIED FOR KEEPS, ARROYO GRANDE, CA
“I am so grateful we invested in marriage counseling! We uncovered a lot of things that we were able to work out BEFORE the honeymoon phase wore off! It was hard at the time, but I am so glad once we were married there weren't too many surprises. I really believe that our adjustment to marriage was so great because we were prepared to deal with our differences.” Marlene

‘My husband and I enrolled in pre-marital counseling and I can say in all truth that we are a closer couple for it. The skills we learned have become integrated into the language we use to love each other, and maybe more importantly, how we communicate when we are having a disagreement. The teachings imparted helpful ways to diffuse the hurt in an arguement and reinforce the connectedness we feel to each other so we can hear what our partner is saying and find the common ground that our union is built on.” Ali

Q What is your venue's history? G.D. SPRADLIN WAS A CHARACTER ACTOR IN L.A. IN THE ‘70S WHEN HE AND HIS WIFE DECIDED TO MOVE THEIR FAMILY TO A QUIETER, MORE SERENE LOCATION. THEY SETTLED ON SAN LUIS OBISPO THANKS TO ITS TEMPERATE CLIMATE AND ROLLING HILLSIDES, THEN PURCHASED THESE 650 ACRES IN THE LOS OSOS VALLEY, CALLING THE RANCH “LA FAMILIA” TO EMPHASIZE THEIR COMMITMENT TO FAMILY. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS AND THEIR HUSBANDS BUILT HOMES ON THE PROPERTY. THE MAIN STRUCTURE, THE HACIENDA, HAS SERVED AS A GATHERING PLACE FOR THE FAMILY AND CLOSE FRIENDS EVER SINCE. AFTER TWO OF G.D.'S GRANDSONS HAD BEAUTIFUL WEDDINGS AT THE HACIENDA, VENDORS AND GUESTS KEPT TELLING US WHAT A UNIQUE, GORGEOUS SITE WE HAVE AND THAT WE SHOULD CONSIDER OPENING IT UP TO THE PUBLIC. SO WE HAVE, AND 2013 WILL BE OUR FIRST SEASON!
SHOWING THE PLACE TO POTENTIAL CLIENTS HAS BEEN A JOY, AS FIRST TIME VISITORS OFTEN LIGHT UP WHEN THEY ENTER THE GATED ESTATE AND TAKE IN THE SURROUNDINGS. WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO HOSTING FUTURE WEDDINGS AND SHARING THIS SPECIAL PLACE WITH COUPLES WHO FEEL A CONNECTION TO IT, TOO.
Q DESCRIBE YOUR ATMOSPHERE AND FEEL... THE SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE ARCHITECTURE OF THE HOME EMOTES OLD WORLD SOPHISTICATION BUT THE OVERALL VIBE IS VERY RELAXED. IT'S A GREAT BLEND OF POLISHED AND ORGANIC. THE CEREMONY COURTYARD IS BLANKETED WITH FRESH CUT GRASS AND BORDERED BY NEAT ROSE BUSHES, LAVENDER, AND ROSEMARY. BUT AS A WORKING CATTLE RANCH, THE LOCATION ALSO OFFERS 360 DEGREE VIEWS OF PASTURELAND STUDDED WITH OAKS, AS WELL AS THE SEVEN SISTERS MOUNTAIN RANGE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF LOS OSOS VALLEY.

Reeda Gorham thequeenbees.com WHAT INSPIRED THIS SHOOT?
THE BEES POURED THEIR HEARTS INTO DESIGNING THIS SHOOT. OUR HOPE WAS THAT IT WOULD APPEAL TO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRIDES IN ALL AGES, SHAPES COLORS AND SIZES…ALL WITH THE NOTION THAT BEAUTY HAS NO DEFINITION. WE LOVE TO FIND THE EXQUISITNESS IN EVERY GIRL, WITH EVERY STROKE OF OUR BRUSH, HER HAIR AND MAKEUP WILL SIMPLY BE AN EXPRESSION OF WHO SHE IS AS A WOMAN, WHO SHE IS AS A BRIDE. EACH ONE OF OUR ARTISTS LOOK TO BRING OUT THE GREAT SENSE OF OUR BRIDE’S OWN STYLE AND SHOWCASE HER SIGNATURE SO SHE LOOKS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS IN THE PROCESS. THE HAIR AND MAKEUP IN THIS SHOOT WAS SOFT, FEMININE AND ORGANIC. THEY ALL LOOKED POSITIVELY DELICIOUS IN THEIR OWN STYLE. WITH IDEAS SO APPROACHABLE, SO CHIC, YOU’LL HAVE TO REMIND YOURSELF TO PUT THE MAGAZINE DOWN AND START TRYING THEM FOR YOUR SELF. WE HAVEN’T STOPPED SWOONING OVER THE PLETHORA OF GLORIOUS IMAGES CAPTURED BY CAMERON INGALLS AND ALEXANDRA CRESWELL.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE CENTRAL COAST?
I AM FROM CALABASAS, MY FAMILY LIVED UP HERE SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, WHEN IT WAS TIME TO LEAVE L.A. I KNEW THIS WAS THE PERFECT PLACE TO CALL HOME.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? I HAVE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS AND STATED THE QUEENS BEES 3 YEARS AGO WHEN I REALLY SAW THE NEED FOR A STRONG, TALENTED AND DEPENDABLE BEAUTY TEAM.
WHAT IS YOUR UTMOST FAVORITE THING OR MOMENT THAT HAPPENS AT A WEDDING AND WHY? THE MOMENT WHEN OUR BRIDE REALIZES THIS IS HER DAY; IT HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME IN OUR CHAIR. ITS THE MOMENT RIGHT BEFORE SHE PUTS HER DRESS ON, THE MOMENT WHEN WE HAND HER THE MIRROR. THAT MOMENT MAKES EVERYTHING WORTHWHILE!
IF YOU COULD USE THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF WHAT WOULD THEY BE? PASSIONATE, DREAMER, GIVER
COFFEE OR TEA?
DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE IT DEPENDS ON THE MOMENT, BUT ALWAYS NONFAT FOAM AND CINNAMON.
IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT KIND WOULD YOU BE AND WHY? THATS EASY. I WOULD BE A DOG, TO GIVE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, AND BE LOVED; SUCH A HONEST UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.

Girl Meets Boy... “It was a beautiful Indian summer night, Sept. 16th, 2009, with the Golden Gate Bridge and the twinkling lights of downtown San Francisco serving as the backdrop for our first meeting. Covered in sand, sweat, and dirt we both had just finished running a 3.5 mile race, The Corporate Challenge, out at Crissy Field. John “Speedy Gonzales” ran at a blistering 6:30 mile pace, finishing in 22 mins…me? Let’s just say I made it across the finish line in time for pizza and beers. While we both worked at the same company, neither one of us knew each other at the time. I was working in San Mateo, John in San Francisco. As the raced came to an end, we made our way from Crissy Field, to the fabulous Final Final. I was walking with two guy friends from the San Mateo office. As John tells the story, he had strategically placed the two “married guys” (Vijay and Brett) on either side of me to prevent me from meeting any single guys. our company’s team was hosting a post-race beer and pizza party. It was here, at the Final Final, a sports bar, covered in sweat over stale pizza and beers we first met and fell in love…We still run this race every year and look back upon it as the way we first met! Our unofficial anniversary”.
106
“I loved our ceremony. A close friend married us which was really special. But he also incorporated things that we admired in each other, and advice from our friends and family... giving it that very special touch. We didn't write our own vows, but we did search together for ones that we felt described us and had special meaning.

What is your venue's history? We bought The Grace Maralyn Estate in the beginning of 2010 right af our daughter was born with the dream that this venue would be her co fund. Appropriately, we named the venue after our beautiful little girl. The property needed a lot of love before we could start hosting weddin so we rented out our first house and moved into The Grace Maralyn Es while we worked around the clock preparing the new property for wed dings. I don't think we slept much in 2010 between the new venue an new baby but through a lot of prayer and dedication we prevailed.
Describe your atmosphere and feel. Since the venue is a private residence and our guests check in on Frida the venue becomes a home where families gather from across the cou Not only that, but having the house for the weekend cuts in half the st level a wedding can bring because everything and everyone is onsite.

Piglet: “how do you spell love?” Pooh: “you don’t spell it, you feel it.”
Jesse and Shannon Moore plumjamphotography.com
WHAT INSPIRED THIS SHOOT?
THE CINEMATIC VERSION OF WINNIE THE POOH THAT WAS JUST IN THEATERS. WE FELT SO INSPIRED AFTER SEEING THAT MOVIE, WE COULDN'T WAIT TO DO THIS SHOOT.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SLO?
WE BOTH GREW UP ON THE CENTRAL COAST. JESSE WAS BORN IN DANA POINT BUT MOVED TO LOS OSOS WHEN HE WAS REALLY YOUNG. I WAS BORN IN SANTA BARBARA BUT HAVE LIVED ALL OVER THIS AREA. THIS IS OUR HOME.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
JESSE AND I HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHING WEDDINGS TOGETHER FOR 7 YEARS. BEFORE WE STARTED OUR OWN BUSINESS, I HAD ASSISTED FOR A FEW PHOTOGRAPHERS AND LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER I WANTED TO BE, AND DIDN'T WANT TO BE. JESSE IS THE ONE THAT REALLY PUSHED FOR US TO COME OUT ON OUR OWN, AND I AM THANKFUL FOR THAT. THIS PROFESSION IS ALWAYS CHANGING, AND WE HAVE TO STAY ON OUR TOES... WE LIKE THAT.
WHAT IS YOU UTMOST FAVORITE THING OR MOMENT THAT HAPPENS AT A WEDDING AND WHY?
SHANNON: MY FAVORITE MOMENT AT A WEDDING IS THE MOTHER AND SON DANCE. I THINK I ALWAYS CRY. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT MOMENT WITH MY SON JUDE, WHEN THAT DAY COMES, MANY MANY MANY YEARS FROM NOW. JESSE: MY FAVORITE MOMENT AT A WEDDING IS GETTING TO TELL THE GROOM FOR THE FIRST TIME, TO GO STAND NEXT TO HIS WIFE, SO WE CAN TAKE THEIR FIRST PHOTOS TOGETHER AS HUSBAND AND WIFE. IT ALWAYS MAKES THE GROOM SMILEY, AND CUDDLY. IT'S A GREAT MOMENT.
WHAT TRENDS WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE UP AND COMING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
SHANNON: I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE FUN, QUIRKY, AND COLORFUL WEDDINGS. I LOVE WEDDINGS THAT ARE A CELEBRATION. I THINK IT'S INSANELY IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR WEDDING DAY REFLECT WHO YOU ARE AS A COUPLE, AND NOT NECESSARILY JUST WHAT'S COOL AND HIP WITH WEDDINGS AT THAT MOMENT. WHEN I ASKED A BRIDE OF MINE THIS YEAR TO EXPLAIN WHERE THEY GOT THE STYLE AND THEME FOR THEIR WEDDING, SHE SAID THEY JUST CHOSE THINGS THEY LIKED AND DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT IT TOO MUCH. IN THE END IT ALL WENT TOGETHER AND MADE SENSE BECAUSE IT WAS THEM. IT TRULY REFLECTED THEIR PERSONALITIES. JESSE: I AM A HUGE FAN OF CUSTOM SUITS, AND LEATHER SHOES. I ALSO LIKE THE FIRST LOOK BEFORE THE CEREMONY, IT CREATES A ROMANTIC AND INTIMATE MOMENT.
IF YOU COULD USE THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF WHAT WOULD THEY BE? SHANNON: NERDY, LOVING, PASSIONATE JESSE: GOOFY, TECHNICAL, LOVING
COFFEE OR TEA?
SHANNON: COFFEE JESSE: COFFEE
IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT KIND WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
SHANNON: OUR SON JUDE SAYS I AM PRINCESS ALLURA, THE BLUE LION FROM VOLTRON FORCE, BECAUSE I AM A GIRL. JESSE: JUDE SAYS I AM THE YELLOW LION FROM VOLTRON FORCE, BECAUSE I AM STRONG.

The difficult thing about submitting a playlist is all the things you cut out. Just like your mix tapes, you’re aiming for a mood. Aesthetics count. There are some staples that never go out of fashion. Van Morrison. Frank Sinatra. And every season seems to produce a new set of future standards like Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros' "Home" or Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel." Here, I gathered songs that I've used in the recent year, rooting around for tunes that seem timeless. It opens with a few selections that have worked for ceremony processionals. Then it moves into full cocktail mode. Another mix may have leaned heavier on modern troubadours like Brett Dennen or Ray LaMontagne. Instead, I tried to high light tracks that I think will appeal to all ages and be listenable just on its own.

For a DJ, I think the cocktail and dinner time is where you win a crowd. It's the best place to get a reading of the general mood and audience and it's where you can be most diverse. Anytime I can get an old-timer to walk up and say they love a song, I feel like I won. -Malik Miko Thorne

ASHA MARIE KIRCHER SILKANDHONEYWED.COM WHAT INSPIRED THIS SHOOT?
THERE WERE TWO MAIN FACTORS THAT INSPIRED THIS SHOOT. THE FIRST BEING THIS NEW CONCEPT OF A ‘REVERSE’ ELOPEMENT AS A CREATIVE WAY TO BRING CLOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILY TOGETHER AND INCLUDE THEM BEFORE CHEERING THE COUPLE OFF FOR AN ELOPEMENT. SECOND; TO ME THERE’S NOTHING WARMER AND MORE INVITING THAN A TRADITIONAL FAMILY SUNDAY DINNER IN THE FALL. ESPECIALLY IN CLASSIC ITALIAN STYLE. THIS IS THE CONCEPT OF WHICH THE SHOOT WAS STYLED AFTER. WITH THE LIGHT SHIFTING TO A SLIGHTLY WARMER TONE AND THE AIR TURNING CRISP AS FALL APPROACHES, I WANTED TO PLAY UP THE CHAMPAGNE AND FIG TONES OF AN AUTUMNAL FEAST. THIS WAS ENHANCED BY THE WARM, GOLDEN TWINKLE OF BISTRO LIGHTS CANOPYING OVERHEAD AND CANDLE-LIT LANTERNS THROUGHOUT.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SLO?
I BEGAN MY LIFE JOURNEY IN LOS ANGELES, THEN SPENT A GREAT AMOUNT OF MY UPBRINGING IN THE BAY AREA, THEN LANDED HERE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO. I’M CONVINCED THAT THE STARS/FATE/DESTINY, OR WHATEVER YOU WILL CALL IT, BROUGHT ME TO THIS AMAZING PLACE. NOWHERE COULD FIT ME BETTER THAN ITS ARTISTIC, SUSTAINABLE-CONSCIOUS AND EASYGOING BEACHY COMMUNITY.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
I’M A START UP BUSINESS. MY BACKGROUND IS IN ART & DESIGN. I SPENT ABOUT 6 YEARS AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR AT A FEW AGENCIES LOCALLY BEFORE PICKING UP ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO GO OUT ON MY OWN. MY WEDDING INDUSTRY ENDEAVOR BEGAN FALL OF 2010 AND LIKE MANY IT STARTED AS A FAVOR FOR A FRIEND. THE COUPLE NEEDED NICELY DESIGNED LETTERPRESS PRINTED WEDDING INVITES AND SINCE LETTERPRESS IS A HOBBY AND PASSION OF MINE IT WAS A FAVOR I WAS GLAD TO EXTEND. FROM THE START, MY PROCESS HAS INCLUDED ASKING THE BRIDE AND GROOM TO SHARE THEIR STORY AND OVERALL VISION FOR THEIR BIG DAY. I THEN CREATE A MOODBOARD TO PRESENT TO THE COUPLE TO MAKE SURE WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE. THAT INFORMATION NATURALLY HELPS INSPIRE MY ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN FOR THEIR SAVE THE DATE, INVITATION ETC..
149
AFTER THE FIRST FEW OF THESE DESIGN AND PRINT JOBS, I COULDN’T HELP BUT RECOGNIZE THAT COUPLES OFTEN HAD CERTAIN ELEMENTS OF THE BIG DAY DREAMT UP BUT THAT THEY NEEDED SOMEONE WITH A VISION TO HELP TIE IT ALL TOGETHER. WITH MY MOODBOARDS, I UNOFFICIALLY STARTED HELPING IN OVERALL COLOR PALETTE, MOOD, AND DECOR FOR THE WEDDING ITSELF—GIVING THE WEDDINGS THEME NAMES LIKE “UP UP AND AWAY”, “WOODLAND WEDDING” ETC.. THAT’S ACTUALLY WHERE “SILK & HONEY” ORIGINALLY CAME FROM.
WHAT IS YOUR UTMOST FAVORITE THING OR MOMENT THAT HAPPENS AT A WEDDING AND WHY?
I LOVE SEEING HOW MUCH EVERYTHING WAS ENJOYED. WHEN EVERYONE’S DONE EATING, DANCING AND MINGLING AND THEY’RE ALL LINED UP FOR THE GRAND-EXIT, IF YOU LOOK BACK AT THE NOW QUIET RECEPTION SITE, YOU SEE THE CANDLES STILL FLICKERING, THE DISHES SCRAPED CLEAN OF ALL THE FOOD AND THE EMPTY WINE GLASSES, AND IT ALL TELLS THE STORY OF HOW MUCH EVERYONE ENJOYED THEMSELVES.
WHAT TRENDS WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE UP AND COMING IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY? WITH HOW PREVALENT THE DIY MOVEMENT HAS BECOME AND WITH HOW INFLUENTIAL WEBSITES LIKE PINTEREST HAVE BECOME, I HOPE TO SEE COUPLES CONTINUE TO PUT A LOT OF THOUGHT AND PERSONAL TOUCHES INTO THEIR WEDDINGS. IT’S REALLY GREAT TO SEE LESS OF A ‘PACKAGE’ WEDDING AND INSTEAD MORE OF A REFLECTION OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM’S CHARACTER IN ALL THOSE LITTLE CREATIVE TOUCHES.
IF YOU COULD USE THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF WHAT WOULD THEY BE? RENAISSANCE WOMAN (OF) CREATIVITY
COFFEE OR TEA?
WORDS CAN NOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE MY CUP OF TEA IN THE MORNING .
IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT KIND WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
I’D MOST DEFINITELY BE AN OTTER. MUCH LIKE OTTERS, I HAVE THIS SENSE OF FREEDOM WHEN I’M IN THE WATER AND I THINK THEIR PLAYFUL, LOVABLE PERSONALITY MATCHES MINE.
