OYSTER RIDGE HOLIDAY BASH DECEMBER 2016 | OYSTER RIDGE

Our community gathered on a rain soaked night in the cozy Oyster Ridge barn nestled among the 900 acres of vineyards in the Santa Margarita ranch lands. For many of our members this was their first introduction to Oyster Ridge since itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new addition to the Ancient Peaks Winery family. Ciel Bleu Events and Scout Rental Co. transformed the space into a winter wonderland! Sidecar Cocktail Co. served craft cocktails from their vintage trailer as guests were serenaded with sweet acoustic Christmas tunes by Melody Klemin. Pacific Harvest Catering provided a delicious spread of appetizers followed by Negrantis ice cream affogatos topped with cotton candy puffs by Haute Sugar. The night turned into an epic dance party thanks to Epic Entertainment.

EMBELLISH VINTAGE RENTALS HOLLYWOOD OPEN HOUSE MARCH 2017 | THE DANA POWERS BARN

The community was exposed to the talent of several creative and innovative florists at the rustic Dana Powers Barn all thanks to the generosity of the amazing Judi Powers, owner of Embellish Vintage Rentals. This incredible event allowed 14 florists to design and transform a given space inspired by a Hollywood movie with one-ofa-kind vintage rentals through the use of beautiful florals. Amidst the aroma of fresh spring flowers, Central Coast wedding vendors came together for an afternoon of charming floral creations, live music, craft cocktails, exquisite foods, and delicious desserts.

DOS DE MAYO CELEBRATION MAY 2017 | SLO BREW LOFTS

San Luis Obispoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest urban lodging, SLO Brew Lofts, is located in the heart of downtown, neighboring bars and restaurants. The five lofts are perched above SLO Brewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restaurant, making it the perfect place to host a bridal party or family for a wedding weekend getaway. Word on the street is that Dos De Mayo is the new Cinco De Mayo! This spin-off of the Mexican holiday brought members together for a night of fun and friendship. Amber Karson, of Karson Butler Events, completely transformed the urban feel with her colorful, festive, and Mexican-inspired design that left guests in awe.

KENTUCKY DERBY POP-UP BRUNCH APRIL 2017 | HOLLAND RANCH

The ladies from Zest it Up hosted their third in a series of four events at Holland Ranch. The focus is always great wine and great cuisine, but this time around was extra special as guests donned their “brunch best” for a Derby inspired gathering at Holland Ranch in San Luis Obispo. Zesty Pop Ups are unique philanthropic events that gathers guests around the table to enjoy a unique experience in a surprise location in honor of Family Care Network Inc. Guests are transported by great conversation, beautiful locations, local wines of excellence, and a surprise pairing menu that offers hors d’oeuvres followed by five courses served family style. These magical gatherings are pulled together by a talented group of professionals who completely donate their services and skills. Amber Karson, event designer and Cal Poly professor, assigned the design and theme collaboration to her class and the winning proposal got to plan all of the details. The result? A wonderful experience for everyone to share, with 100% of the proceeds going to a good cause.

RAVA WINES VENUE LAUNCH AUGUST 2017 | RAVA WINES

Rava Wines hosted Wedding Standard members for an end of the summer White Party. Everyone dressed in white, as is the custom before Labor Day, to mark the start of the fall season. The challenge was to make a 1,000 person capacity room feel cozy for a party of under 100 guests. Rava wines is nestled on an 80-acre boutique vineyard in Paso Robles wine country. Once home to a working horse ranch, the venue offers a unique blend of all the Central Coast has to offer. Lauren and her husband, Chad, dreamed up the venue after struggling to find a venue large enough to host their 500+ guest list for their wedding. Several years of dreaming and tons of hard work later, Rava Wines was born. With sprawling vineyards, a quaint pond, a three-bedroom bridal suite overlooking a courtyard, and a modern California wine-inspired reception space, the possibilities are endless.

“The second most requested wedding flower is the romantic English Garden Rose. These are just as fluffy and almost as large as the peony. The good news with these guys? They’re available almost year-round because there are farmers that dedicate their business to growing them.” fig. 2: The English Garden, or ‘David Austin’ rose.

“Another popular bridal flower is the ranunculus. So beautiful. So sweet. It is in the family of the wild buttercup, is fluffy, and grows tall in the spring. It isn’t too big, and is mostly used as an accent flower to add visual interest among roses and peonies. If you are in love with them as much as I am, get married in the spring!”

“Anemones are a spring flower as well. It feels a lot like a poppy. It is striking, with the most popular variety being white with a dark navy, center. The anemone has a great balance of casual and elegant. Sometimes just one or three in a bouquet take it from ordinary to ‘stop you in your tracks’ gorgeous.”

“The Cafe Au Lait Dahlia - this flower holds a special place in my heart. It is huge and amazing! It comes into season in early-to-mid summer, and again in the fall, if you have a healthy garden. This flower is glorious because it delivers the most unique blush-caramel color. It is so striking in size, you can almost make a bouquet out of a single bloom.”

“White is usually the most popular color for them, but I love to use the ‘antique hydrangea’ which allows for a variety in color in one bloom, usually blush and a faint green. The hydrangea is available almost anytime throughout the year and makes a perfect wedding flower. Depending on what it is paired fig. 6: Hydrangea arborescens with, I’ve seen them work in a very traditional, classic elegant setting and then again in a causal, rustic setting.”

WHEN I APPROACHED THE SUGAR LIPS MINI DONUTS STALL AT THE FARMERS MARKET IN SAN LUIS OBISPO, the scent of cinnamon and sugar pulled me in. I watched with greedy anticipation as owner Jessica Brown covered the twelve fresh, supple donuts in both powdered and cinnamon sugars. She handed me the bag, bottom heavy, warm, and full of the softest, tastiest donuts I’ve ever eaten. A few days earlier, I was sitting across from Jessica at a local coffee shop. The hubbub of the room was in stark contrast to Jessica herself. Dressed in a stylish yet conservative black dress, she looked every bit the professional, and nothing like how I picture bakers: apron-clad, covered in flour, hands full of pastries. Across from me, she fidgeted with her bangs – a signal she was not one for much animation – as I asked her about the Sugar Lips backstory. Was she always a baker? Did she grow up eating donuts every Saturday with a loved one,

or did she and her husband share a first kiss over a plate of handmade donuts? Where did she find her recipe – perhaps a secret family formula? Jessica pushed her bangs behind her ear again. Nothing like that. Ten years ago, Jessica found herself roaming a farmers market in Oregon. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime clandestine moments: there in front of her was a booth selling fresh donuts. The owners dropped the doughy discs into the frying oil, brought them out after they turned a dark golden color, and coated them in sugar in front of the throngs of people eagerly waiting for their own soft, warm donuts. There, at an Oregonian farmers market, Jessica knew she wanted to bring that experience home to San Luis Obispo. She recounted her business’s origin story in a very

matter-of-fact cadence, but her eyes glittered with the memory, as Jessica pushed at her bangs. “I just figured,” she shrugged, “who doesn’t like a warm, fresh donut?’” It was that thought which propelled her into her kitchen for a baking marathon. Jessica hadn’t been a baker – professionally or even as a hobbyist – so she practiced and experimented, honing her recipe until it was perfect. And once she discovered it, Jessica brought her mini donuts and the signature madeto-order process to the SLO farmers market. For the first few years, though, she couldn’t even give her donuts away. Whether it was a lack of name recognition or just the inevitable test of perseverance that all new businesses must go through, Jessica was unsure. Nevertheless, she persisted. Week after week, she and her husband kept setting up their table, until Sugar Lips eventually became a farmers market staple. These days, loyal fans drive from as far away as Fresno simply for a Thursday night treat from Sugar Lips. The appeal – beyond the delicious taste – is the sensory experience. Customers, wedding guests, and party-goers

observe Jessica’s donut-making process, hear the crackling of the oil, smell the donuts being fried and coated in sugar, and feel the warmth and weight of them in their hands. By the time the donut is popped in their mouth, it tastes even sweeter and more delicious, because every sense was teased. Once Sugar Lips became a more established component of the weekly farmers market, people began approaching her about catering for weddings and events. Her decision to take Sugar Lips on the road (literally – they often serve their mini donuts from a cute vintage trailer) would rocket them from beloved local celebrity status to a Central Coast wedding industry phenomenon.

Jessica, relishing in the much-deserved success of Sugar Lips, admitted that she loves being a part of weddings, as well as the wedding community. “I just picture us as a fun addition,” she said. “Not only do they get to eat our donuts, but they get to watch them being made. And we pull up in this cool trailer, see all these other vendors we know, and it’s just a fun feeling of camaraderie. I love that.” Now, thanks to inclusion in the Wedding Standard community, Sugar Lips is a preferred vendor for many of the area’s venues. They’re part of a thriving wedding microcosm, bringing sugar-crusted smiles to brides and grooms, wedding guests of all ages, and event-goers across California’s Central Coast.

1. SAY YES TO HIRING A MAKEUP ARTIST

Do yourself a favor and decide to hire a makeup artist. You might think you can just do your own makeup on your wedding day, but there are so many things to factor into that decision. Makeup artists have a kit worth thousands of dollars, filled with products that will help you to look your best on your wedding day. This is our job! When I do makeup for a wedding, I am layering products in a specific way to make you look amazing - not only in person, but also in photographs. An artist can also give you advice on what will be best for your specific features and what colors to use to achieve your perfect bridal look. This is a day that everyone will be looking at you. Spend the money, hire the makeup artist. 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Not all makeup artists are created equal. Just like any planning you do for your wedding, research is key! It’s important to know what kind of look you want for your big day before you start. You want to find an artist that matches your style, and who can follow through. Some artists can do any look thrown at them, and that’s amazing! But, it’s also rare. Most artists have their specialty down pat. Some artists can whip out a natural bridal look like no other. Others are great at a full coverage look with smokey eye and lots of color. Take a look at their website, Instagram if they have it, or even a Facebook

page. Read reviews and find out how long they have been in business. Also make sure that they have experience in the procedures of a wedding day. An artist might do amazing work on a single model for a photo shoot, but it’s much different when that artist has a timeline to stick to and needs to do makeup on nine girls all while trying to balance different requests and styles. Can that artist survive an eight hour day? Ask around if any friends or family members can recommend someone. Being confident that they can deliver will make you feel so much better! 3. BOOK EARLY

If an artist is good, they will get booked early. We are talking sometimes six months or a year in advance. So get on it ASAP! Also be aware that you might be competing with another bride to book your same date. If you know you want that artist, sign the contract. Of course, do your research and read that contract thoroughly! This will guarantee that they are all yours. If you wait on it, you might have another bride swoop in and sign on the dotted line that same day. Ask the artist if they have any other brides asking for that same date. This might help you to move things along faster. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions before signing, but be aware that the longer you wait the chances of losing that artist might grow.

She’s given us her biggest pieces of advice for brides navigating the path to bridal beauty!

4. SCHEDULE A BRIDAL TRIAL I can’t stress enough how important a bridal trial is. Not only for you, but for the artist as well. A trial is for experimenting and creating a look that you are happy with! It’s also to make sure everyone is on the same page before the big day comes. With that being said, come prepared for your bridal trial. The first thing I ask my bride when doing a trial is what kind of look are we wanting to create? When the bride comes back with an answer of “I don’t know, do whatever.” I know there will be trouble. This is your wedding day! You might have spent $20,000 on the venue, flowers, cake, and your wedding dress, but the one thing everyone will be looking at all day is your smiling face. Plus you are going to be photographed! This is your

time to dream and feel beautiful. It’s so important that you come with at least one picture example of what you want as a starting point. That way you and the artist can have a place to start from for talking colors, what will work best for you, and how you want to feel. If you say do whatever, the artist will. And you might not be happy with it. Take the time to research a look you want and don’t be afraid to speak up! At the end of your trial be honest. If you don’t like the lip color, say something. If you feel like it’s too heavy for your taste then say it. As an artist we want to make sure you feel the best you can and are happy. Again, this is the time to get it perfect so on the day of your wedding you feel amazing.

5. SKIN CARE A lot of brides feel lost when it comes to skincare and how they can prepare to look their best for their wedding. It’s important to consult with an aesthetician in your local area six months to a year before your wedding to talk about what products and procedures you will need to get your skin looking its best. Don’t wait until two weeks before your wedding to get your first facial. Your skin needs time to adjust and react to new things. One thing that really makes makeup look flawless is skin that is happy and hydrated. You will need less foundation and concealer to cover up blemishes. Plus your skin will glow from the inside out. Invest the time and extra money on your skin and you won’t regret it!

The morning of your wedding, you will have people asking you tons of questions that you will be pulled aside for. Consider the pause you’ll take when the photographer shows up, and answering their questions. You might even have a bridesmaid that shows up late and pushes the entire timeline back. It’s an important 30 minute buffer! Give yourself that grace. If you don’t end up using it that’s okay - you now have extra time to relax and drink a mimosa. But if you don’t have it you might feel frantic and regret it.

6. TANNING AND SPRAY TANS Every bride wants to look amazing in their wedding dress, and sometimes that means getting a tan to avoid weird tan lines and achieve an even skin tone on your big day. But, there are a few things to keep in mind before you do this. If you are going to go the route of sun tanning, either outside or in a tanning bed, you want to do it gradually. Don’t go sit out in the sun for six hours, three days before your wedding. A sun burn is the hardest thing to match and cover up when it comes to foundation. Using makeup to cover up a sun burn can irritate the skin and also create an ashy look, especially on the face. I once had a bride who went into a tanning bed every day the week leading up to her wedding - ber face was literally cracking and bleeding in areas. It was a nightmare. Be very careful with your skin leading up to your wedding. Also, keep in mind that if you get a spray tan before your wedding, your artist will need to match that color on your face. Be smart and let your makeup artist know if you are doing anything dramatic.

7. GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME The morning of your wedding will go by in a flash. This is such an important time because it can set the vibe of your entire day, whether it’s fun and calm or a panicked and stressed. What can you do to make sure you have fun and feel calm? Give yourself extra time. I always give a 30 minute buffer when creating my makeup timeline right at the very end. Some brides have argued with me that they don’t want to start 30 minutes early, and I get it. That’s 30

8. KEEP YOUR ARTIST AROUND FOR TOUCH-UPS So, it’s your wedding day and you are feeling amazing! Your hair is perfect, the dress fits like a glove and your makeup is on point. You’ve chosen to do a first look with your new husband before the wedding at 1pm and the wedding starts at 4pm. In between you will be taking lots of photos, maybe shedding a couple tears of joy and also kissing your hot husband, all before you even walk down the aisle. Your lipstick is almost all the way gone and you have been sweating because it’s a warm day. Don’t you wish you could turn to your makeup artist and have them fix you up? No matter how good your makeup artist is, you will sweat, you might cry, you will be talking and laughing and kissing and your makeup will do its best to stay in place, but it won’t be perfect forever. I encourage brides to spend the extra money to have your makeup artist stick around. You will be glad you did when you get your photos back!

Moving forward with her family, Kathy began seeking the perfect job that wouldn’t take her away from the busy and growing lives of her children. “I didn’t want to be away from them, I wanted to be with the kids. I had a crazy, weird talent for baking cakes and turned that into a business out of my home; doing wedding cakes and desserts.” “I saw how the wedding industry was evolving to where people didn’t want cakes anymore. They [wanted] pie weddings, dessert bars and things that we didn’t used to have. So I started making all these different things and realizing that the wedding industry was transforming, it was not what it used to be. In this area amazing venues started popping up and all these super creative people, and I desired to be in that but I wasn’t sure that I was in love with baking anymore… So I set about trying to find

a business I could involve the kids in because I didn’t want to leave the home.” Landing on the perfect, modern wedding related business that could be run from home proved to be a challenge. It wasn’t until a family trip to Washington D.C. that Kathy found the inspiration she needed. “We dragged those kids to every single Smithsonian - there’s probably ten of them! And around the sixth one, we rounded the corner and in front of the museum, on display, was a vintage Good Humor [ice cream] truck. And it was like boom, a lightning bolt hit me and I saw the uniforms, I saw everything in that minute.” From there it was a whirlwind of research and merging contacts along the trail to acquiring the classic truck. “We realized we were either going to have to put a ton of money into restoring a vintage [truck] that was rusted out

or we’d have to build it from scratch. We found an original mold for a 1950’s freezer box from a Good Humor truck and we found the guy to make it. It took about two years and was a really crazy process, we literally put the truck together the way they used to. So it is an exact replica of what they used to look like.” SLO Mama’s freezer box is stocked with a diverse variety of both traditional and local, artisan ice creams, pops and bars. For weddings, Kathy consults with the bride and groom to hand pick a tailor-made menu of about 20 items from either the traditional menu, artisan menu or a combination of both. Included on the local menu are treats from Doc Burnsteins, Negranti Creamery and Leo Leo Gelato, with both gluten free and non-dairy items. In terms of planning for a wedding, I ask Kathy what she typically asks a bride and groom during their initial conversations. “When I talk to a bride and groom, I ask them ‘would you like to come over and see [the truck]?’

Because they’ve only seen it online and it’s a really pretty truck in person. I want them to be able to envision that it’s not going to be garish or corny, it’s actually going to add to an elegant wedding.” Another topic that Kathy mentions is pertinent to the pre-wedding planning is the entrance of the truck and whether or not the bride and groom prefer a surprise arrival for the guests. “I think every one of our brides so far has made it a surprise for their guests! So we wait out in a field or a vineyard hiding until the coordinator calls us to come down,” she tells me. When the “special surprise” has been announced and the call is made, Kathy cranks up music on the truck’s sound system and rings the bells, making the grand entrance she describes as “performance dessert.” “People start crying and jumping up and down, just freaking out when they see us coming! And then

we hop out and we’re wearing our uniforms and it’s just delightful. We are always surprised at the reaction, I don’t think we’ll ever get used to that because it’s so fun to see people’s faces, they know it’s special.” “Just for the two or three minutes that people come up to the truck we are giving them an experience they can’t really get anywhere else, and for some people it’s something that brings back beautiful memories. And for the kids who have never seen it, they know it’s different. They know it’s not a typical experience and it’s really a privilege to provide that, it’s more than I ever thought or set out to do.” From neighborhood favorites such as the 50/50 bar and Firecracker Pop, to the Negranti sheep’s milk cookie sandwiches; sweet connections are made as each guest steps up to the truck. The treats are just the cherry on top for Kathy though, the loving interactions made, both between her family and the guests, are truly the driving forces behind the whole operation. “I can’t imagine not being able to do this with my kids, the family aspect is most important. And the fact that as a family we get to bring a moment to people where they feel happy and transported out of what’s difficult. I can’t tell you how many people tell me their stories when they come up to the truck. Maybe it’s the connection to their past or the fact that it’s something sweet and innocent. I don’t know what it is but it’s an amazing privilege for us to be able to listen and give them something sweet as they go on their way.” Between the ice cream and the nostalgia, Kathy and her SLO Mama crew bring an unmatched atmosphere that makes a wedding just as sweet as its desserts.

If you are worried about your outfit being too busy pick a tie with a more dominant color background, like this mustard neck tie to the left, and then choose a pocket square print that shares a similar color palette, but on a smaller scale.”

DON’T LET SELF-TIE BOW TIES SCARE YOU! “I get many clients that have never tied a bow tie before so they opt for the pre tied ones, however the timelessness and perfect imperfection of a self tie bow tie are just so awesome I always encourage clients to give them a try. Youtube has some great quick and easy videos that make tying them a breeze, and I find them much easier than looking at a diagram. All you need is a few practice sessions before wearing and you should be good to go; its like riding a bike! Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to tie them for life, just watch out - you will likely be hit up by your friends for a tutorial!”

I have seen many engaged couples feel so overwhelmed by the process that something as special as a honeymoon often falls by the wayside. As the owner and lead travel specialist of the experiential travel planning boutique, Sweet Mūn, I’m thrilled to share my top 10 steps for planning the perfect honeymoon because I believe that exploring the world together can create a meaningful and precious bond that can last a lifetime.

Now that you’ve made the decision to take a honeymoon (yay) it’s time to start dreaming of your destination. Yes, there are probably a million places on your bucket list but this is your one honeymoon so try to focus in on the intention for this getaway. Do you want to lounge on the beach all day and enjoy countless sunsets from your overwater bungalow? Do you want to adventure into nature and explore new landscapes you never knew existed? Do you want to immerse yourself in a new city – the art, the food, and the culture? Consider the activities and experiences that best help you enjoy the world together and make those priorities for your honeymoon.

IDENTIFY YOUR DREAM DESTINATION

CHOOSE TO TAKE A HONEYMOON

Though it may seem impossible to imagine planning an extravagant vacation following a wedding, it is vastly important that you decide to go on a honeymoon. Some circumstances may only allow for a quick getaway, or a honeymoon a month following your wedding but either way, making plans to get away together will be something you will never regret. It is so easy to fall into the routine of logistics and decision making when planning a wedding and that can make you and your fiancé feel like co-workers instead of two people in love. What could be better than kicking off your marriage and this new season of life by traveling the world together and having the time and space to reconnect with one another? 72

Despite rumors that there are certain days of the week that flights are cheaper, there really isn’t a “trick” to getting the best rates on flights. It mainly takes a lot of time and research. Track your ideal flights for a couple weeks to understand the average costs. Then decide on a budget you feel comfortable spending and if you see the costs within that budget, just pull the trigger to book them. Odds are they won’t come down much in price and if you’re happy with the amount you’re paying, then why risk it? If you’re still not finding good rates, try searching flights leaving from airports within 3 hours of you - you may be able to save hundreds of dollars by driving a bit further for your departure.

BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE

SECURE THE PROPER DOCUMENTS

Once you choose a destination, make sure you have all the proper documents you will need to successfully travel to your destination. If you are traveling internationally, make sure you have an updated and valid Passport. If your Passport is going to expire within 6 months of your travel dates, you will want to renew prior to your trip. This is a requirement to enter some countries as they don’t want you to decide last minute to stay there indefinitely, which you may be tempted to try. You should also check to see if you need a Visa for the destination you’re traveling to because that is a surprise you definitely won’t want to experience.

5. FIND YOUR PERFECT HOTEL This is one of the most important aspects of your trip and can often make or break your travel experience. Here the best advice is location, location, location. You may find the most magical offthe-grid boutique hotel, resort, or Airbnb but unless you plan to spend most of your time hidden away in this space, it may end up becoming a huge obstacle for getting to explore the town, city, or island youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in. You can likely find a lovely little place closer to the main sights, restaurants, and shops that would allow you the ease of every day adventuring. Or if you just must stay at that cute little hideaway, choose to split your time between there and a place in town. This will give you the best of both worlds. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re thinking of staying further from the center of town for a cheaper hotel option, keep in mind that the amount of money you are saving will likely be spent in transportation getting to/ from the main sights. Sometimes, spending a bit more for a hotel in the city center will save you money in the long run.

PLAN EXCURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN ADVANCE

This can be one of the most time consuming aspects of planning a trip but is incredibly vital for a smooth travel experience. You should consider your transportation to and from the airport, destinations, train stations, and everywhere else in between. The last thing you will want to figure out while traveling is how to find your way to your hotel from the airport, arriving to the train station without tickets booked to your next destination, or realizing that you have to carry your bags up 100 cobblestone steps to get to your hotel. You should also look into booking tickets to the top attractions, reservations at the best restaurants, and tours to see more of the countryside where you are visiting. There is nothing worse than showing up to the Eiffel Tower dreaming of reaching the top, only to find out that tickets are sold out for your entire stay or that you have to wait 3 hours in line just to walk the stairs to the top. Also, you know that famous chef with the Michelin star restaurant you’ve been dying to try in Florence? Yeah, that booked up a month ago. You want to be sure you plan ahead for all of your nonnegotiable experiences you’re dreaming of having on your honeymoon. It is not worth waiting to the last minute and risking the opportunity to enjoy the best your destination has to offer.

PACK EARLY AND PACK LIGHT

For some, packing can be the most stressful part of the trip. It may seem like the end of the world if you forget something, but keep in mind that most destinations have the essentials you may have forgotten at home. The best way to avoid the vacation packing stress, is to pack at least two weeks in advance. This will allow you time to order any last minute pieces you may feel you’re missing and really think through all of the items you’re bringing. 75

FLY SMART

You hear it all the time: “Get to the airport early.” It may seem crazy to get to the airport 3 hours before your flight, but it will actually set you up for a much calmer travel day. Going early ensures you won’t miss your flights, you may be able to secure better seats at check-in, your checked bags will be more likely to make it on the plane and therefore to your destination, you will have more time in the terminal to grab food, coffee, and even some books if you forgot to pack them. Lastly, you won’t be so stressed! The reason airports tend to be so stressful is because everyone is rushing, late, worried about missing their flight - you don’t have to be one of those people. Try your best to get some sleep. I know, there are like a million movies you’ve been dying to watch and your flight has them all, but I urge you to start nesting the second you get to your seat and try to sleep before checking the in-flight entertainment. There will be plenty of time for that after you are rested and the more sleep you can get on the airplane, the less likely you are to be sick and grumpy upon arriving to your destination.

Once you’re off on your romantic getaway, disconnect from everything else. Perhaps decide to turn off your cell phones and only use it for photos on your trip, definitely do not take your laptop, and switch your brain into vacation mode. Everything will still be there when you get back and this is your opportunity to live in the moment without any obligations or daily pressures. Know that when you travel, things can and will go wrong – the weather might not be perfect, you may miss a train connection, and sometimes you might want to sleep in instead of going exploring, and that’s okay. Whatever the case, go with the flow and know that this experience is creating memories and a bond to last a lifetime.

10. HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. ENTER SWEET MUN.

Let’s face it, you’re busy. You are planning a wedding, working hard to pay for said wedding, and have all of the other dayto–day responsibilities that make adding one more project feel impossible. If you’re looking at this list and feeling overwhelmed, perhaps it’s time to call on a professional. This is a trip of a lifetime so don’t just wing it and hope it all works out. It is an investment of time and money, so protect that investment by leaving the details and logistics to an expert. Your honeymoon is also an opportunity for you to grow your relationship - it can be a truly magical time for you to connect with one another and explore the world in a way that inspires you and ultimately changes your perspective on the future. The new year is among us, and there are some fun trends that will be taking front and center. Here are some things to look for in 2018. NUMBER OF ATTENDEES

Smaller more intimate gatherings are becoming more and more popular. Dine and party with the ones that mean the most to you. This also means you can stretch that budget and provide quite a memorable experience for yourself and your loved ones.

THEMES

Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford an all-inclusive overseas destination wedding? Not a problem- let the destination come to you! By providing the right cuisine, the right decor, and finishing touches your guests will feel they themselves are on a trip!

COLOR

Color blocking was big in 2017, but keep an eye out for mixed-and-matched patterns, textures and color combos such as blues and pinks. You might want to try two to three [or even four!] different prints, that are all in the same color scheme and have some fun with it. You may see this with plates and napkins, but definitely not both at the same time.

Combining vintage pieces with modern touches has been an on-going trend and will continue to be for this next season as well. This goes with furniture and attire. With this shoot we played with pink vintage chairs, and added ever-sopopular white farm chairs. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been behind the camera at wedding celebrations for eight years and counting, with over 250 weddings to date. A seasoned pro at engagement photos, Jen is here to answer all of your questions.

“WHY SHOULD WE DO AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION?” An engagement is a really fun and memorable time for a couple, and scheduling an engagement session is a great way to not only document this truly exciting time, but also to give you some practice time in front of a camera before the wedding day. As a bonus, after our session is done, not only will we feel like old friends because we’ve had a chance to run around and have a great time together, but you’ll also end up with some incredibly gorgeous photographs! I call that a win-win!

“WHERE SHOULD WE TAKE OUR PHOTOS?” When it comes to where we can take your photos, the sky’s the limit – literally. We could hop in a hot air balloon if you’d like; but before we head off into the clouds, let’s first tackle some locations on the ground. I always like to first ask my clients if there is a place that is important to them that they’d like to incorporate into the shoot, because sentimental feelings trump everything. If there’s a spot that means something to them, I say let’s go! The location of your first date, the place where he proposed, or just a spot that you love to explore together could all be great options. But, truth be told, most couples don’t come to me with a spot already selected. Usually, my couples are really open to locations, and just have a general idea of the types of spots that they’d like – for example: open fields, woodsy, lots of natural light – and that’s where my experience and love of the Central Coast comes in, because I can suggest a whole slew of gorgeous places for them to choose from. For my more adventurous couples, there’s a completely different approach I suggest: opting for an activity instead of a location! This is where the hot air balloon ride can come in – or any other fun activity that your heart desires!

“WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR? HOW MANY OUTFITS SHOULD WE BRING?” Whether you’re opting for a scenic location or a fun activity to keep you moving during your engagement shoot, I always recommend having at least two different outfits to wear. By opting for two different looks, you’re giving yourself a greater variety of final photographs to choose from, and variety is always a good thing when it comes to photos. I also love the idea of doing one dressier “date look” and one look that feels a bit more relaxed, but still polished. The biggest piece of advice I can give when selecting outfits: make sure that you feel amazing. If you feel great, it will show in your photos! And a secondary tip that might be as equally important: please don’t feel like you need to match each other. Instead, find colors that complement each other, and go from there.

“WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO HAVE OUR SESSION?” Hands down, my absolute favorite time to shoot is the window just before sunset. There is something magical about that golden sunlight as it’s setting for the day, and I schedule sessions accordingly, so that we can enjoy all of the beautiful effects that it has on our photos. Can’t make a sunset session work with your photographer? No worries; the morning sunrise light is just as lovely.

“THERE’S NO NEED TO BE NERVOUS, BECAUSE YOU’RE JUST BEING YOURSELVES AND THERE’S NO WAY TO MESS THAT UP.” -Jen Rodriguez

“I’M REALLY AWKWARD IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. HOW CAN I RELAX?” You might be feeling a bit nervous before your shoot, and that is completely understandable. I mean, honestly, when was the last time you had your photo professionally taken? It was probably for your senior photo, which might not have been the most memorable experience (I’m probably aging myself with this comment, because senior photographers are rather amazing these days!). But here’s the deal: A LOT has changed since then. You don’t have to worry about the unknown, because I’m here to tell you exactly what you can expect during your shoot. It’s going to feel like you’re out with your best friend, enjoying an ultra beautiful location, and I just so happen to be there, capturing you two having a great time. There’s no need to be nervous, because you’re just being yourselves, and there’s no way to mess that up. If you’re still feeling a bit on edge, then my next suggestion would be to enjoy a (insert your favorite strong drink here) right before our shoot, to take the edge off – but only one! You can save the next round to celebrate the end of a fabulous shoot.

“SHOULD WE BRING PROPS WITH US?” I love the idea of bringing along a few small props to your shoot, but don’t feel the need to go overboard. The main focus of this shoot should be you and your honey. My go-to favorite props are a blanket and flowers! I always suggest that a couple should bring along a coordinating blanket to our shoot, because you never know when you might need something to sit on or snuggle up in. Flowers always add an extra level of interest and beauty to photos, and it’s also a fun way to try out a bouquet that might be a bit more playful or bold than you’re doing on your wedding day.

“SHOULD I GET MY HAIR AND MAKEUP DONE?” I definitely recommend scheduling an appointment with your hair and makeup artist before your engagement shoot. Not only will you feel absolutely amazing for your photos, but this is also a fabulous time to do a practice run for your wedding.

“HOW DO WE MAKE THE MOST OF OUR SESSION TIME?” Just be ready to have fun, and be yourselves. If you do that, then your shoot will be an absolute success.

From A Lovely Creative Events: We knew from the start that this wedding was going to have everything that we love about boho! The bride knew her style and vision, but heavily relied on her wedding team’s insight and resources to bring her vision to life. Stefanie and Mitchell were a destination couple who would not be around to pick and choose every detail of their wedding, but trusted us with executing it. April Flowers and I came up with such a perfect boho plan! April chose a variety of brightly colored ceramic containers which held oversized brightly colored arrangements. Lastly, we chose an ornate clear glass water goblet from All About Events to add some extra interest to the tabletop! Stefanie wanted a few comfortable spaces for her guests to enjoy one another’s company, so we sourced low leather sofas, oversized and colorful arm chairs and, of course, some poofs (to stick to her boho-wishes!) for an intimate and comfortable seating area, with prime location right next to the dance floor to watch dancing! Stefanie’s cake topper was one of my favorites to date, it was an heirloom to her family and looked so sweet on top of her naked cake from Paper Cake Events!

From Lovelyfest Events: Angela and Nealon, two San Francisco natives, looked far and wide for an intimate yet modern venue for their October nuptials. Instead of planning an extravagant Chinese-American wedding in the city, the two decided that Biddle Ranch Vineyard in the quaint town of San Luis Obispo would be the perfect spot to say “I Do”. They came to us at Lovelyfest with open minds and wanted to defer to us when it came to the design and feel of their wedding day. Angela told us she wanted the wedding to have a Grecian feel with a rich color palette and beautiful accents. It was important to her that all of their friends and family felt comfortable as they gathered around to celebrate the day. Bringing the indoors out was an integral part of the overall wedding design. The two wanted their outdoor wedding to feel as intimate as if their guests were in their living room. Angela’s deep connection to her Chinese heritage was another very important aspect she wanted to incorporate. And although they weren’t getting married in the city where

they fell in love, they wanted to bring a part of San Francisco into their day as well. With all of those factors in mind, we came up with a design using a color palette of bold lilac, rouge and peach tones. Rich textures such as velvet, local figs and pomegranates, amethyst geodes and wood gave it a Grecian vibe, and the red symbolized her beloved Chinese heritage. We brought in Laurel at Adornments Florals to adorn the ceremony and reception with her lush florals. She added figs and pomegranates to the gorgeous red and peach arrangements and each arrangement was overflowing in an asymmetrical design. The ceremony was adorned with a red Oriental rug and heavy florals cascading down a faux mantle at the altar. This brought in the “living room” feeling Angela desired. We hand made the escort display with their beloved city in mind, a gold string art Golden Gate Bridge, the perfect symbol of San Francisco. Custom Minted escort cards lined the beautiful lilac velvet and wood table. Their alfresco dinner was an intimate gathering on the lawn complete with long oak tables, velvet runners, figs and fig leaves, candlesticks, amethysts and gold flatware. The florals were abundant and full of rich red and peach accents. Trumpet Vine catering curated multiple San Francisco inspired dishes for our couple, including their Red Curry and Sweet Potato soup. Everything was absolutely beautiful and delicious. A dessert table full of Paper Cake Event’s carefully crafted desserts was full of delicate macarons, a semi-naked gold leafed cake and an array of custom galettes and other sweet treats. It was a dream to style this table using our antique cake plates and platters on another beautifully soft lilac velvet linen from La Tavola Linens. The night was full of love, fun, and beauty. Kelsea Holder Photography captured it all perfectly and guests were in awe over the details and lovely setting Biddle Ranch Vineyard brings. We are so happy to let the world see this beautiful day.

From the bride, Alyssa: Brad asked me to marry him when we were hiking the gorgeous terrain of Ojai, California so we saw it only fitting to host our intimate, yet glorious dinner-partywedding there, and knew it would be the perfect place to gather our friends and family to celebrate! The backdrop of the Topa Topa Mountain range bursting with wildflowers and tropical greenery added the perfect effect. We were fortunate to have an amazing group of vendors and friends who helped us curate the perfect day. My husband, Brad, is in the wine industry and I am in the food industry, so we quickly agreed that highlighting the dining experience would be special and unique for our guests. For instance, instead of traditional floral centerpieces at the tables, we chose to have custom wood planks made to create “edible centerpieces” that ran down the middle of each table. The Food Liaison was gracious enough to prepare the delicacies that we plated family-style for guests to enjoy together. It was definitely a highlight of the day! Our inspiration for the wedding was whimsical and bohemian. We incorporated colorful goblets, African textile runners, potted cacti, a homemade kombucha bar, along with a folk band that we danced to all night long. I couldn’t have asked for a better coordinator than Jaime from Wild Heart Events. She has such an eye for style and design that I couldn’t have done it without her!

From the bride, Elliana: This inspiration behind my design is a combination of all things I love. I wanted to have a boho look but with clean lines. I love the relaxed and free spirited feel of boho but wanted a touch of modern and class. So thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what we went for. Vanessa (Vanessa Noel Events) helped bring all of that together so well and tastefully- she really is amazing at capturing your inspiration and making it come to life. Blue has always been my favorite color and I always wanted a fall wedding, but since spring worked best timeline-wise I chose to run with deeper fall colors anyways. One of our favorite parts from our wedding day was just being with all our friends and family. I had so many people tell me beforehand that the day flies by and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to take

it all in. With that in mind I did my best to stay present throughout the day so that I could thoroughly enjoy each moment. Another one of my favorite moments was looking each other in the eye when we got to the end of the isle after the ceremony. That moment is unforgettable. To be officially married and know that the man that is holding you tight is who you get to spend the rest of your life with is the best feeling in the world. Too many special moments to count but it truly was the very best day.

From the planner, Vanessa Noel: Ellie was inspired by indigo for its richness, but also wanted to keep the design a bit eclectic. We combined traditional and classic elements like blue vintage goblets and metallic table runners with modern and eclectic pieces like brass candle lanterns and global-inspired table numbers. Wine and taupe colored blooms added a contrast to the blue tones for a heavy dose of drama and richness.

From the bride, Mary: When Patrick and I got engaged, the first big hurdle we faced was deciding where to get married — my family is in San Francisco and his is in Fairfield, Connecticut. Eventually, we settled on central California, where my mom grew up. Dreaming up a West Coast wedding while based in Boston wasn’t easy, but we were lucky to have an incredible wedding planner. Danae Pearce’s style is so elegant and dreamy, and she made it work perfectly with our rustic setting. I gave Danae a pretty bare-bones sense of how I pictured the day, and I was thrilled with her vision. She understood exactly what I wanted and I trusted her completely. She put together an allstar team of vendors for a truly perfect day. Our ceremony was right in the center of San Luis Obispo at the Old Mission, which is where my parents got married. From there, we went to Santa Margarita Ranch, one of the oldest ranches in the state. Our reception was in their barn, which was decked out with lush foliage, flowers, chandeliers, and lounge areas. We arranged for the ranch’s historic train to take guests around the gorgeous property during cocktail hour. It was a huge hit, especially with our precious ring bearer, who probably rode it at least three times!”

With all of the details and decisions that come with planning your wedding, the day finally comes and passes so quickly that it can feel like a whirlwind. While the dress, the flowers, and the catering will help make your day one to remember, it’s the intimate words you exchange with your partner that you’ll keep in your heart forever. The best way to guarantee that the memories of your nuptials stand the test of time is to make sure each moment is one that conveys the true nature of the love the two of you share. So we’ve asked a couple of our favorite pros, Rabbi Janice Mehring and officiant Tom Allen, for their best advice on planning your ceremony. CONSIDER YOUR FAITH For many couples, religious beliefs play a significant role in determining the direction their ceremony will take, but secular couples can end up feeling unsure of what elements to include. Rabbi Janice Mehring, who marries wedding couples of all faiths, and no faith at all, says each ceremony differs, depending on the background and the culture of the couple. “As a person of faith, I believe that a marriage of two people coming together is a blessing. But that takes different forms for different understandings.” Nondenominational or interfaith couples can draw in more spiritual concepts about love and unity, and include unique cultural and family traditions as a way of blending elements of what’s important to each person. Tom Allen agrees, and tells his couples to do what feels right; include enough ritual to mark the importance of the moment, but remember, it’s your day. The rituals you choose should tell the story of who you both are.

BE CHOOSY WHEN DECIDING WHO WILL MARRY YOU While clergy people and professional officiants are trained and experienced in crafting a meaningful wedding experience, almost anyone can be deputized for a day, and more and more couples are following the trend of trusting a loved one with the honor of marrying them. It takes more than reading words off a page to conduct a memorable ceremony, though, says Rabbi Mehring. “There are pieces that you need for a wedding: You have to have affirmations, you exchange rings, and you have the legality of it. But then it’s about taking those things and crafting them into a meaningful ritual.” She and Allen both do their best to discover who their couples are as individuals and as a unit before the big day, as should whoever marries you. What’s most important is that the person you choose cares about the success of your marriage, not just the wedding.

KNOW YOUR STYLE It’s rare that a couple plans their wedding without some input from friends and family. Every loved one seems to have an opinion or a suggestion, and it can be hard not to give into the pressure of trying to please them all. Both Mehring and Allen encourage couples to be true to who they are. Decide on a vibe and then consider all the trends and options available. Are you a shy and quiet couple? Maybe you want to exchange your vows in private or write them in letters to each other, to be read at another time. Maybe you’re more outgoing and gregarious. How do you feel about including some music in the ceremony or about your officiant cracking a joke or two? If you’re more laid back than traditional, Allen may be the guy for you. “I’m tattooed from my ankles up, but I clean up exceptionally well. Some people have hired me because they thought that was cool.” Giving mom and dad a little of what they want is all good, but when it comes down to it, it’s all about customizing a ceremony that’s authentically you. REMEMBER THE KEY ELEMENTS No matter your style, every wedding service should follow a basic structure, and include some key components that just can’t be missed. If there are other customs and traditions you’d like to include, feel free to sprinkle them in where it feels right. Here is a general flow you might consider when planning the ceremony program: 1. WORDS OF WELCOME You know this one: “We gather here today to celebrate the love and commitment of…”

KEEP THE TISSUE HANDY Your wedding day is one of the pinnacles of your life experience, and the waterworks are sure to be flowing as you commit yourselves to one another. Don’t forget plenty of tissue and water-proof mascara for the ladies. There won’t be a dry eye in the house.

2. A MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE Rabbi Mehring suggests this uniquely Jewish tradition as an option for those who want to honor and acknowledge those who can’t be physically present on your day. 3. WORDS TO MAGNIFY THE MOMENT You can include some words of gratitude, a blessing, a prayer or reading, or even a song. You can leave this to the officiant or open the floor to your dearly beloveds. 4. WORDS OF COMMITMENT Here is where you lay it all on the line. What do you feel for the person before you? Why have you chosen to spend your life with them? Whether you write your own or go with traditional repeat-after-me style vows, this is the moment where two become one. Say what’s in your heart. 5. RING EXCHANGE To paraphrase Beyoncé: if you like it, then you better put a ring on it! 6. PRONOUNCEMENT OF MARRIAGE + THE KISS! How quickly it all happens! Tom Allen does his best to keep the whole ceremony short and sweet, taking the couple from the entrance to exit in 18 minutes or less. In the end, it’s all sealed with a kiss, and the happy couple begins a whole new adventure. How do you want to be known to your friends and family? As man and wife? Spouses? Partners? A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER with LINDSEY GOMES

hen the wedding day of a couple finally arrives, I think it might be just as exciting for them as it is for me! Okay, maybe it’s a bit more exciting for them. But by that point, we have communicated so much, and I am just so happy for them that I can’t wait to get there and to document all of the love and special moments! Things really begin with that first email they send my way, asking if we are available and if they can get more info on packaging and pricing. From there, we create a unique relationship together; I love hearing their story of how they met, the proposal, what they dream of for their wedding day, and just getting to know them and who they are as a couple! Next comes their engagement session, which is my favorite. I love just getting to hang out with the two of them for a few hours, adventuring around, and really learning how they interact and just ‘be’ with each other. After that, we keep in touch for the remaining months until the big day. I love social media - I can see new pictures of them and basically stalk their lives until I get to see them again! Around a month to a few weeks before the wedding day, we confirm the timeline, family portrait lists, and make sure all things are set! Then... it’s wedding day!

Something special about Lindsey Gomes Photography, is that it is not just always me - I have an awesome permanent second shooter, my husband Trevor! We photograph every wedding together and we love it! As the photographers, things begin in the days leading up to the wedding itself. We get our batteries charged, clean all of our lenses, get our memory cards ready, print out the timeline and any other information we need, and make sure our bags are packed and ready to go! The morning of, Trevor always makes us a big breakfast, we pack snacks and water, and we’re off!

2:30pm: FIRST LOOK A typical wedding day begins around 1:00pm. We arrive at the location and Trevor and I separate; I head to the bride and bridesmaids, and he heads to the groom and groomsmen to photograph getting ready images and detail shots. Around 2:00pm they have their first look. This has got to be one of my top favorite moments of a day! I love when a couple takes some time out to see each other, and just really soak in that they are about to get married! Plus, it allows us to get all wedding party images done pre-ceremony, which frees up a lot of the couple’s time once the ceremony is finished.

3:20pm: WEDDING PARTY FORMALS Once we finish the formal portraits of the wedding party, they hide away to prep for the ceremony. Meanwhile, we photograph the ceremony and reception details shots and prep for the ceremony ourselves!

4:30pm: POST-CEREMONY PHOTOS The couple exchanges their vows, and is pronounced husband and wife! We immediately switch gears from photographing the ceremony, to capturing formal family portraits. Then, it’s reception time!

7:45pm: SUNSET Another one of my favorite times of the day is sunset portraits. I love getting to sneak the couple out to enjoy a bit of time together, away from everyone, to just soak in the fact that they just got married, and it’s their wedding day. 9:00pm: GOODBYE After hitting the dance floor and capturing some sweet moves, it’s time to take off!

Lucky for us, they stepped away from the kitchen for a moment to share their insight into the world of wedding cuisine.

eing engaged is often the first time for a couple to plan one of the biggest celebrations of their lives, gathering many, if not all, of their closest friends and family. Needless to say, there can be a lot of pressure to make sure every detail is perfect. In a recent WeddingWire poll of wedding guests, the number one thing guests care about when attending the wedding is the food! It should come as no surprise then that half of your total budget will be spent on catering and your venue.

SUIT YOUR TASTES The first thing you should keep in mind when looking for a caterer is the type of food they offer. What are some of you and your fiancé’s favorite things to eat? The meal you decide to serve your guests should be a reflection of your personalities, or special memories the two of you have created together over a meal. Was your first date at a casual local hangout where you shared a basket of fries and some burgers? Then perhaps incorporate mini French fry cones and burger sliders into your menu as an appetizer or late night snack.

KEEP MONEY IN MIND Letting your caterer know what kind of budget you are working with will also help them make suggestions for a cohesive, plentiful menu throughout your wedding, as well as the type of service that is available. Typically, the most budget friendly option is a buffet, but some caterers also offer family style service, where platters are placed at each guest table and passed around. For a more formal affair, plated service is where servers bring each course to your guests at their seats. Keep in mind a wide range of tastes to satisfy most, as well as any potential food allergies.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN Beyond the types of service noted above, more couples are making the dining experience at their wedding an interactive one. Food stations and “bars” allow your guests to customize their own meal. Food stations can be by type or region, for example, wine country cuisine, or Mexican. Food bars are gaining momentum where one cohesive theme is presented such as a mac and cheese bar or a burger bar. The possibilities are truly endless.

As with many great wedding vendors, in-demand caterers book up quickly, so anticipate booking your caterer early in the planning process. Guests come to a wedding expecting to be fed; be sure to make it memorable! With intention and thoughtfulness, your friends and family will easily be exclaiming that was the best wedding food they have ever had!
