LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

BUILDING A LASTING MARRIAGE STARTING WITH DAY ONE

PHOTO: MASON & MEGAN PHOTOGRAPHY

TWS VOLUME II

M

y wife and I celebrated 12 years of marriage in 2019. While our wedding day feels like just yesterday, it’s becoming more of a blurred memory that pales in comparison to the full life we’ve been living, ever since we declared “‘til death do us part”. Our wedding was set in a spring green meadow, surrounded by our favorite people and hundred-year oaks. Our wedding palette included browns, pinks, and creams. Our day wasn’t perfect, but we had a team of friends and artists there to make sure everything went smoothly, and that we had the best wedding day ever. When we look back on our beautiful wedding pictures, we laugh about how innocent and naive we were. We were just kids making bigger promises than we could ever hope to perfectly keep, wearing rose-colored glasses with permanent smiles plastered on our faces, because the person that loved us most was standing before us, declaring the same vows. When people tell you ‘marriage is hard’, I think that they are missing the bigger narrative: Life is hard. Sharing it with another person can either amplify the difficulties or diminish them. Making those outlandish vows at the altar is simply a promise to give it your all. A promise to choose the other when they need you the most. A promise to walk out the self-sacrificing nature of true love when the feels just aren’t there. But what do I know?! I’ve only been married a measly 12 years. The longer you’ve been married, the more you begin to realize that you don’t know it all. That’s why I wanted to turn to a couple who has seen over 50 years of marriage, to share with our readers what it takes to build a lasting marriage. It made sense to get a little strategic marriage advice from the couple who have made it through 52 years of marriage, with 19 children and 32 grandchildren to show for it all. Read their article, ‘A Lasting Marriage’ on page 60.

We had an hour-long conversation with Jack and Luana Herlihy about their wedding and marriage in their garden room, where vines grow through the ceiling cracks; a room where the couple spends their leisure time playing ping pong and hosting family gatherings. What Jack and Luana share about their wedding day seems miniscule compared to what they share about their marriage, but it was that day and those vows that set the stage for their life together - a day that marked their lives forever. This community and publication is all about inspiring your wedding day to be a reflection and celebration of your love story. Planning your wedding involves countless choices to make, which will express your togetherness. This collective of artists is deeply passionate about making your dream wedding, and beautifully representing your love story. It should be timeless, not trendy. It should be an expression of your commitment, and it should foreshadow the journey ahead. It should pave the path that guides you into real life. Raising kids, pursuing careers, and building a legacy together. As you plan your wedding, keep the marriage in mind. Here at The Wedding Standard, we are deeply committed to making your day one that you will remember for a lifetime, without losing sight of what really matters most. We are thrilled that you have decided to do this life together. To share the struggles, burdens, the joys and adventures with your best friend. Let’s celebrate that commitment in style!

LORIANA RANCH

JENNA & NICK This day was the perfect orchestration of beauty, love, sentiment, and pure joy. Danae Grace Events took this wedding to the next level, helping fulfill this couple’s dream wedding. The ceremony took place at the Mission in San Luis Obispo, where the bride’s parents were married 30 years ago. After the knot was tied, family and friends headed to Loriana, a stunning venue nestled in the hills of San Luis Obispo. From Jenna: “We met in college. We were both on the same flight into our college town. We have been together for 4 years. He proposed on my parents’ property, next to a really big cross. We knew a couple months into meeting each other that we were in love, and within a couple more months, knew we would get married – it was just a matter of getting to know each other and figuring out our plan. I wanted my wedding to be classic and colorful. I wanted a Catholic ceremony, and I wanted the reception to have lots of flowers and a happy/chill California vibe. We decided on doing lots of pinks and corresponding colors in the flowers, with golds all around! I loved the church I got married in and the venue of my reception, Loriana. I also loved having my friends and family from near and far celebrate with us. Just remember, the day is about you and your husband, and everything else is extra. Remember to look at him and your family and friends, and be grateful for the moment you’re in.”

KLENTNER RANCH

CHELSEA & STEVE Chelsea and Steve were originally supposed to get married at a venue that was affected by all of the natural disasters that Santa Barbara experienced, and we had to change venues a week before the wedding! Klentner Ranch, however, ended up being the perfect backdrop for their big day. Chelsea had just received her nursing degree and was working shifts around the clock, so she wanted to leave much of the design and planning in our hands. Carla from Idlewild Floral created the most beautiful ceremony, with a triangle arch covered in blooms that trailed onto the grass. The ghost chairs seemed to reflect off the ocean view for such a beautiful setting. The groom is a musician, so for our escort display, we wrote guests’ names on clear vinyl records, and added pressed flowers to create a personalized seating chart, where we also had some of his favorite records rotating on

22

a record player. Inspired by her gorgeous Grace Loves Lace dress, we brought in bohemian elements in macrame and textile runners, pressed flower place cards and blue tie-dyed napkins. Our couple sat at their own sweetheart lounge, where guests could sit and visit with them throughout the dinner. Guests sat down to bountiful edible centerpieces by Slate Catering, embellished with herbs and flowers. When it was time for dinner, we brought in a food truck and woodfired pizza oven to serve our couple’s favorite eats! Finally, we served pressed flower cookies by Lori Stern along with coffee and espresso drinks from Welcome Coffee Cart to finish off the meal. Dart Collective then kicked up the dance vibes, ending the night with one of the groom’s band’s songs, all of the guests singing along and the bride crowd surfing!

GREENGATE RANCH

K E L S I & S H AU N From Danae: “I knew the first time I met Kelsi that we were a match made in heaven, when it came to designing her wedding. Her energy, joy, and love for others made it so easy to put together a design that was a perfect fit for her and Shaun. There were so many different elements I wanted to incorporate into her wedding to fit her personality such as boho, modern, refined romance, with a lot of fun and glamorous details sprinkled throughout! We went for a more natural palette: creams, nudes, champagne with accents of taupe and rose hues. When I design a wedding, I love for guests to experience different elements throughout the wedding, but keeping it cohesive throughout. For the ceremony, we did an over-thetop garden design with lots of stunning florals. As guests transitioned to the cocktail hour, we did a more modern, bohemian design with mostly succulents, air plants and greenery (The bride loves succulents!). Guests were able to play lawn games, grab a craft cocktail from Sidecar and sit on cozy lounges, or try some amazing cotton candy from Haute Sugar Co.! The dinner reception was held in front of the barn, where guests enjoyed a delicious family-style dinner. We pulled in a lot of florals and candlelight to create a timeless design for the dinner. One of the most fun designs we did was transforming the barn. When you work at a venue a lot, it stretches you as a designer to create new experiences and designs for each client. We staged the adorable Sidecar trailer in the back of the barn, and had lounges and trees surrounding it. Other details included velvet drapes, sequin linens, chandeliers, lounges, and the Sidecar trailer as the bar with the DJ elevated on a stage. It was a fun way to make the barn a party spot! I always like the first entrance to the barn to be a “wow” moment for the guests, and this was, to date, one of my favorite barn transformations.

CROSSROADS ESTATES

K AT Y & D E R E K From Lovelyfest: “Katy and Derek wanted their wedding day to feel like a reflection of both of them. She likes feminine, light color palettes with neutral flowers, whites and greenery, while he prefers natural wood and a more industrial look. They both wanted their guests to feel like they were at an intimate dinner party - just hanging out! So we blended the two styles and created a fun atmosphere using custom hightop wood tables and metal bar stools (for the younger crowd), and neutral velvet linens on the low tables. Stella Bloom brought in lush florals in green, white, and touches of pampas grass to soften the look. We transformed the barn at Crossroads Estate into an industrial space, yet kept it soft and romantic, just how the bride envisioned. With family-style food and great live music, it really did feel like a celebration of friends and family. The day took place on Cinco de Mayo, and with this couple’s ties to Mexico, we brought it in in subtle ways. We used traditional equipal furniture in the lounges, and used a few cheeky sayings in Spanish on the signage to tie it all together. The signage was kept simple and modern, with glossy black acrylic and shiny metallic gold lettering. It was a stark contrast to the outdoor winery venue, but mixed with the neutral colors and textures of other decor elements, gave it a more upscale look. It was a day to remember!”

From Katy & Derek: “I wanted my wedding to feel fresh, inviting, and like a party that would make my guests feel excited to get to enjoy. From the welcoming cocktails to the lounge furniture to the tiny details, it kept people excited, amazed, and having a good time, and that’s exactly how we wanted it to feel. And most importantly, I wanted it to feel special. I wanted them to walk in and feel Derek and I and our style throughout the entire place, and in every detail and area of the wedding. We both have a very different eye for style, yet it somehow blends together. Derek had a LOT of ideas, but Katy was able to tame some and choose the realistic ones and make them come to life with Lovelyfest. Derek was all about the food - he wanted to make sure that was an entire element in itself. We think every occasion is an opportunity to have an incredible meal and not only a meal, but a well-served meal, and a beautiful meal at that. And that is exactly what we were able to execute with New West Catering, who also own one of our favorite restaurants, Industrial Eats. We also felt the same way about the bar. Derek’s personality came through on the food and the bar, great service, no lines, incredible product, and fun people. I would say that my

38

personality came through on the design and the floral. The small details were also a fun addition, like the matches and the bonus napkins, and the fun things that I knew the guests would enjoy. I wanted every little area to be well-executed and finished through, and I guess that is part of my personality. I remember as girl in high school pinning this exact dress and showing my dad the dress I wanted to get married in, and Moondance was able to provide me not only my dream dress, but the most fabulous experience I have ever had. This was another place that, from the second you walk in to the second you walk out, not ONE detail is missed - cold champagne, customer service is incredible, the gift bag you receive when you become a Moondance bride - these details are what I live for, and this place did it right. Lovelyfest, you guys literally made our dream day come true. Without you guys, it would not have happened how it did. The ideas, the team of vendors, all your hard work – we truly can’t thank you enough. You are the dream team.”

OYSTER RIDGE

KELSEY & EMELIE From Lindsey Gomes: “Emilie & Kelsey’s first look was definitely one of my all-time favorites. These two are so laid-back and sweet, and they just wanted to get married and have a fun party! The moment Kelsey started tearing up when he saw Emilie was such a special time! I also loved our time spent in the vineyard at sunset together! It’s such a peaceful and quiet time to just relax and let them be together for a few moments!” From Azurae of Ciel Bleu Events: “Lots of white, lots of greens inspired this wedding. We wanted to take a natural approach that was inspired by the surrounding landscape at Oyster Ridge, complemented by the bridesmaids and groomsmen in gorgeous black gowns and suits. Our most memorable details were the custom-curated Trumpet Vine Catering menu and the iron chandeliers that hung above the guests at dinner - which was custom-built by the groom’s father - the bride and groom pouring champagne into their champagne tower of coupe glasses from All About Events, the ice cream service from the Negranti’s truck, and the first dance to a song the groom secretly chose and surprised Emilie with. And I can’t forget Flowers by Kim, with her draping perfection in the barn, and Adornments, with the most incredible floral accents in all the perfect spots!”

41

From the couple: Emilie works in communications and plans events regularly as part of that. Azurae Shults of Ciel Bleu Event Design was hands down the best investment we made. She was absolutely perfect, so easy to work with, and made our day entirely stress-free. Lindsey Gomes was THE best photographer I’ve worked with (and I’ve been in 12 weddings). She was fun, made Kelsey laugh (which is hard!), and took the most stunning, natural photos. If you need a caterer on the Central Coast, look no further than Trumpet Vine Catering. In the words of many of our guests, ‘That was the best food I’ve ever had at a wedding!’ We served the food family-style, and it was all prepared, at scale, beautifully. Don’t sweat the details. Your love, your family and friends are the most important part. It’s so overwhelmingly humbling to have everyone you love in the same place at the same time. Focus on that. The only things people really remember about weddings are 1) was it meaningful? and 2) did I have fun? The less stressed you are about details, the more you’ll achieve both.

A Table for Every Occasion BY KRISTEN C. TIESSEN PHOTOS BY ANNA DELORES

T

he meal! You’ve booked the venue, and you’ve found your dress, and the looming question is: what will we feed the guests?

Everyone who’s ever hosted a reception has agonized over this question. Answering it can be as daunting a task as any other you’ll tackle regarding your big day. But Chef Tracy Labastida, founder and owner of Field to Table Catering and Events, believes the reception dinner is about more than food. It’s about capitalizing on one of the most significant opportunities you and your partner will have to shower your guests with the love that exists between you. It’s a chance to showcase the personality of your relationship and to show your guests a little appreciation for coming together to celebrate this momentous occasion with you. Whether you go with a four-course or family-style service, whether you choose Asian-fusion, traditional comfort food, or even wood-fired, gluten-free pizza, the meal you serve is a crucial element in one of the most special days of your life. This meal is the first you’ll serve and share as a married couple. You’re already in their hearts, but why not warm their bellies anyway with something absolutely unforgettable? Born into a Filipino farming family, and raised in the fields of the Santa Maria Valley, Tracy came up with the understanding that food is a big deal. He’s been planting, watering, picking, packing, and preparing produce since he was as young as the age of six. Tracy believes fresh is best, and that when you start with local, in-season ingredients, you can create the menu of your dreams. He isn’t the kind of guy to make compromises - nothing he prepares is ever frozen or artificial, and the dishes he creates for Central Coast brides are as beautiful and delicious as they are ecologically conscious and community supported. A lot of people don’t have any idea where their food comes from, but it’s all about personal connections for Tracy. He spent his childhood working the earth, and did everything from lay seed to load delivery trucks, working full-time for his parents

after class throughout high school. He completed a college internship in dietetics, and even explored marketing and selling the services of other catering companies before he understood his calling to become a chef himself. Every turn his life has taken has either started with or come back around to food. It’s the running thread that connects him to brides and grooms like you. Every wedding presents a new thrill, a new challenge for Tracy. Clients of all backgrounds, cultures, and ideologies come to him in hopes of fulfilling one goal – serving the meal of a lifetime. Field To Table not only understands that quest, but every member of the staff also works tirelessly to create precisely the vision you hold in your mind. Would you like a white glove experience? Or maybe you’re planning a casual backyard wedding, and you dream of guests bibbing up for a New England lobster bake served on paper-lined picnic tables. Whatever you have in mind, Field to Table is happy to fulfill your wedding day wish. And if you have no idea where to start, don’t worry! Tracy has enough vision and lust for food to invent the perfect meal to compliment your style and palette.

YOU’RE ALREADY IN THEIR HEARTS, BUT WHY NOT WARM THEIR BELLIES ANYWAY WITH SOMETHING ABSOLUTELY UNFORGETTABLE?

Tracy has fed the most diverse and dietary-restricted clients you can imagine. He’s executed dinner services so decadent and exotic they could be considered “sinful”, but his skill, respect, and reverence for food also support his range and ability to compose even one hundred percent kosher or halal meals. He’s able to satisfy even the taste buds of the deeply religious.

50

TWS VOLUME II

51

Tracy’s cooking style is influenced by his cultural background and childhood. He learned to make large quantities by watching his father cook up Santa Maria style BBQ to perfection for school fundraisers, and he’s inspired by the flavors and cooking methods of his Pacific Islander roots. The markers of his cooking personality support, uplift, infuse, and enhance each couple’s unique tastes to create a meal befitting the romance, or thoughtfulness, or carefree nature of their love and relationship to one another. Field to Table is more than a name - Tracy describes it as a movement. It’s the idea that where your food comes from is tied to where it ends up in more than the obvious ways. Everything we eat has a personal history. Just the same way Tracy’s Central Coast upbringing set him on a fated path to chefdom, the fresh, locally grown and cultivated food he serves is fated for the plates of extraordinary people: his clients, couples who care about each other, and their friends and family. Tracy’s clients are the kinds of people who value community as much as he does, who desire a mouthwatering meal full of healthful ingredients – a meal set on a table around which you’ll make memories that last a lifetime.

PLAY IT UP When deciding on your makeup look for your wedding day, consider your favorite facial feature, and be sure to make it the focal point of the look. For example, if you already have luscious lashes, have your makeup artist enhance them even more by adding two coats of (waterproof!) mascara and individual lashes on the outside corners. If you have naturally luminous skin, show it off by using illuminating skin and highlight products. If you have full brows, try out the “feather brow” trend by using different brow gels and pencils to fill them in. Whatever your favorite feature is, be sure that is the most dramatic point on the face, and all other makeup is more subtle, to complement and not overpower.

KEEP IT REAL When looking at inspiration photos for your wedding day hairstyle, be sure you’re keeping your expectations in check by searching for hairstyles on models that have a similar hair color and texture to yours. Braids and details on blonde hair look and photograph very differently than on a brunette, and vice versa.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE Wow your guests by quickly and easily switching up your look in between the ceremony and reception. Switch out your veil with a sparkly hair comb or a statement hair piece, such as a flower crown. Trade the nude lip gloss that you wore for the ceremony with a bold-colored lip stain that will last all night. Add a fun piece of clothing over your wedding dress, such as a cool custom jacket or a fabulous vintage kimono.

a lasting marriage WRITTEN BY SARAH STRAUSSER PHOTOS BY CAMERON INGALLS

A

s Luana Herlihy recalls her wedding day - she doesn’t have a great amount of detail and memories to share - to her, it was simply a hoop she had to jump through. “I wasn’t one of those girls who dreamed all the time about what my wedding was going to be like,” she says. “I just wanted to be married and have a family.” “It wasn’t, like, a day that was picture perfect,” Luana says, as she remembers her friends’ brothers whisking her away for hours during the reception to beer bars as part of a tradition, leaving her new husband Jack at the reception, with all of their guests. “It was imperfection on full display that day.” The couple first met on a late summer night, when Luana asked Jack to see his ID at the door of her stepfather’s bar, which she was working at. “I carded him,” she says. “And I fell in love, right then and there,” he adds. As a responsible employee - Luana didn’t date customers who came in to the bar. “I went back to that bar for 30-plus days to see her, and I even went when she wasn’t there.”

61

The night of her last shift, as her stepfather was getting ready to hand over the keys and sell the bar, they all stayed late and into the next morning - and Luana became a customer herself. As Jack drove Luana home that morning, Jack and Luana found themselves stuck behind a crossing train - watching the cars pass by one by one, a constant pattern to fill the space between conversation. “If you ever get married, how many children would you want?” Jack blurted, to break the silence. “Eight,” Luana answered.

One year later, Jack and Luana should have been toasting with champagne and eating their preserved wedding cake. Instead, Luana threw the cake at Jack, and they had one simple exchange. “Well, cheers Jack - it’s been hell.” As Jack and Luana began to grow the family they had been dreaming of, life had become a lot less simple. The couple had four kids by the time they had been married five years - and they we’re struggling to keep afloat and happy.

“Me too! I’ve always wanted eight kids! ” shouted Jack. “Let’s get married.”

Alcohol was a big stress on the Herlihys’ marriage for a long time. “We both drank a lot, just like everyone drank a lot,” Luana shared. “These were the days of three martinis at lunch,” says Jack.

“From then on, that was it,” Luana recalls. Although the couple’s courtship only lasted about four months, they were both sure that it was their

children while Jack went out drinking with friends. “I said to God, ‘You tricked me,’ because I was miserable. Through the alcoholism, long tearful nights, and hard living came resilience and determination to fight for their family - their marriage. “We would never have the marriage we have now if it wasn’t for those early years - the struggles of disappointment,” Luana says. “Those five years were really hell.” After five years, Jack and Luana stopped drinking - and everything changed for them. Jack and Luana began to sew into community and the church family that surrounded them, and they were able to focus their eyes and heart on what mattered most, and what would ultimately help them to thrive as a family and make a change. As the family quickly grew, Jack found his niche - his sweet spot - and settled into the role of supporting Luana. “The house bustled and grew, leaving clutter and chaos, but having the heart of a servant,” Jack says. “My job was to make sure she was taken care of, and to support her.”

JACK + LUANA’S RECIPE FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE The couple kept adopting more kids and adding to their abundant and full family. The first years of their marriage taught them that they had to work towards a healthy and happy marriage and family. As Jack and Luana reflect on each of the children they adopted, their love for each one is obvious. The hustle and bustle of life with 19 (yes - 19!) children was hectic and crazy, but a life that blessed the couple’s marriage beyond belief, and created a legacy filled with love and generosity. Today, 35 grandchildren and 19 children constantly surround Jack and Luana as they walk through life together - 35 grandchildren and 19 children who look to Jack and Luana as the cornerstone of their families, and a testament to lasting love.

FIND YOUR ROLES Jack found early on in marriage that one of his most important jobs as a husband was to support Luana and take care of her as she took care of all of the children! Defining and owning this role allowed Jack to care for his wife, and help her be a successful and happy mother.

DEFINE YOUR PRIORITIES A big struggle for Jack and Luana early on in their marriage was placing priority on the wrong elements in life. Once they were able to ensure that they were placing a big value on keeping their marriage and family healthy, all other aspects fell into place.

IDENTIFY YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES Identifying what your challenges and obstacles are early in your marriage can help to keep you working towards a healthy and happy relationship. Once they identified aspects of their relationship that were hard on them, Jack and Luana were able to battle challenges together, strengthening their relationship and family.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY Jack and Luana could have easily been intimidated with the task of caring and providing

WATC H V I D E O

for 19 children, but instead, they committed to making it the very element that fuels their love. They found such joy in children and family, and pressed into making it the very center of their marriage and love story.

Keep it Simple Your menu doesn’t have to be complicated or elaborate to be great! Keeping the menu simple creates an easy ordering process for guests, and allows you to choose a few highquality menu items that can really be showcased. For example, our “Clover Club #2” may sound complicated, but it’s actually just a few thoughtful ingredients which, when combined, create a unique but super approachable drink. This drink is something that not only looks beautiful, but also tastes delicious.

When it comes to Signature Cocktails, lighter is better! If you are going to be offering signature cocktails at your wedding, we recommend drinks that are on the lighter/more refreshing side. We think it’s important to keep in mind that at weddings, guests will usually be drinking for upwards of 6 hours, and that they tend to drink on the heavier side of average. Given this, we really try to encourage our clients to pick cocktails that are not solely comprised of booze (i.e., Old Fashioned, Manhattan’s, etc). While these are amazing classic cocktails and enjoyed by many, they are nearly all alcohol, and can be a bit dangerous when consumed over long periods of time. If you are really set on having an Old Fashioned at your wedding, we’d suggest that you provide the ingredients needed for them, but we’d suggest NOT highlighting them as a “Signature Cocktail” on a menu. Instead, we’d suggest something a bit lighter that appeals to a larger audience, i.e., Whiskey Sour or Mule (or something from our fun Signature Cocktail Menu!). This gives you a lighter menu option that will appeal to a wider range of guests, and also keeps things a little safer in terms of consumption. Our “Elder Frenchman” is a great twist on a classic French 75. It’s light, refreshing, and can easily be made and served at a large gathering like a wedding. We’ve also provided a recipe for a punchstyle version that works great for a smaller dinner or engagement party!

67

Don’t skimp on staffing At Sidecar, we work tirelessly to create drink recipes that are unique yet approachable, often thoughtful twists on a classic, or something new and fun – however, we work equally hard to develop service plans that are organized, strategic, and adaptable, given each event’s unique logistics. No matter how organized and thoughtful these protocols are, though, they cannot be executed without adequate staffing. We know that staffing can often take up a large part of a service budget, but based on experience, it is our belief that when hiring a bar service, it is vital to place a value on the number of staff that are there to assist you and your guests. I think many of us have all been to a wedding or event where we’ve had to wait in a long line to order a drink, and what a buzzkill that can be! Specifically, we always recommend that there are staff members there to assist with tray-passed drinks during cocktail hour. This is a great way to cut down on lines at the bar, and what a great impression for guests to be greeted with a tray full of beautiful and delicious cocktails! We truly believe in the value of a well-trained and adequate staffing protocol! As an example: would you rather spend a large portion of your bar budget on a “top shelf ” spirit and wait in line 15 minutes for your drink, OR be greeted after the ceremony with a tray full of Signature Cocktails made from a midlevel spirit?

Personalize it! When designing your bar menu, it can be fun to include a personal element! For example, for a recent Indian wedding, we created “The Golden Girl” based on the bride’s favorite traditional Indian yogurt drink. We used this inspiration to design something that was fun and unique, tied into her heritage, but also offered a very “user friendly” flavor profile. It was an added bonus that it paired with the delicious Indian food dinner!

PRESQU’ILE WINERY BY EMBARK EVENT DESIGN P H O T O S B Y A M B E R LY N N & A L M A E R I K A

What began as an idea to capture and convey the beauty of Presqu’ile Winery’s new hilltop wedding ceremony and reception site through the lens of Amber Lynn Photography and Fox Jump Cinematics, quickly transformed into an unforgettable creative project. Presqu’ile winery is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the intimate valley of Santa Maria, between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, California. The venue looks over the entire valley, stretching from the hillside all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Our details for the shoot included a focus on honeybees, a nod to our sweet real couple. We played with yellow hues in elements throughout the shoot, and used cool blues to elevate the color palette. Honeycomb cookies made for the prettiest treats - and we were even able to incorporate real bees into our design! The ceremony site eclipsed the most stunning view of all. Overlooking the valley where the couple met and fell in love, Danielle and Brandon shared a tender moment reflecting on their love story, and reminding each other the importance of their marriage. Brandon was so smitten with his bride all day, and we loved watching him dote on her in every scene! When he arrived at the venue, she instantly lit up and didn’t stop smiling and laughing for the entirety of the shoot.

70

Over in the cocktail area, the couple enjoyed fresh honey sangria, featuring a Presqu’ile rose, fresh fruit, and the sweetest raw honey. They took time in the SLO Photo Bus, capturing fun and candid photo strips to take home. The drinks doubled as an escort display, each glass adorned with a calligraphed escort card, urging guests to “sip and be seated”. The head table sat at the edge of the hillside, and created the perfect place to watch the sun begin to creep behind the rolling hills. The florals featured crisp blooms in soft colors, each flower bursting open and sitting pretty amidst all the details. Hand calligraphed name cards fixed on grey flatware from Paper Tree Studio guided guests to their seats. Soft stoneware plates from All About Events and gauzy linen napkins from Blush Fine Linens created a contrast in texture, and each setting was graced with a fresh persimmon. In the final moments of sunlight, bride and groom enjoyed a specialty sweetheart cake, fixed with fresh florals and delicate silk blue ribbon. We found that a fun palette combined with graceful, delicate details made for a great balance in this shoot. We loved finding ways to draw out our honeybee motif, and capture the beauty of our setting, our beautiful couple, and endless creative elements.

A N INTROVERT WITH A PENCHANT FOR ‘70S YACHT ROCK, MALIK IS A QUIET STORM. He is soft-spoken and eloquent, though not particularly loquacious — a trait which makes him an amazing wedding DJ, maybe even the best. Malik is an elegant man — dressed in perfectly-fitted corduroy slacks, a preppy button-down, and argyle socks. Bespectacled and unassuming, he’s more politician-turnedprofessor than the DJ I was expecting. Sitting in his retail space, previously known as Appendage + Bough, Malik is both obviously tall and nearly unnoticeable. Though contradictory, Malik himself is a bit of a contradiction; he’s refined to the point I’d call him a Renaissance man. He can navigate topics like literature and politics as easily as he talks about Taylor Swift and Kanye. Malik is not your average DJ. Despite his stoic demeanor, Malik blooms when he talks about music. He works part-time at Boo Boo Records in San Luis Obispo, California, which keeps him plugged into the music scene and around his fellow music lovers.

78

TWS VOLUME II

79

“All I want to do is talk about music and make people feel comfortable,” Malik says. A goal that serves him well as a DJ, and though he’s chosen this boisterous, extroverted hustle, he enjoys not the attention-seeking component of DJing, but the certain degree of anonymity his turntable provides. From that camouflaged vantage point, he can observe a room’s vibe and feel out an appropriate playlist. He explains that his unique visual perspective allows him to align the music he plays to the moment, which is vital to DJing. “When I can feel this sort of palatable energy, there’s a connection that happens. DJing elicits an energy and excitement for audiences that causes a very visual form of happiness.” Weddings, specifically, should be joyous occasions, and Malik works tirelessly to ensure the music perfectly represents a couple’s day. A veteran wedding DJ, Malik understands that music is subjective, which is why he encourages people to get personal about their tastes and preferences. He wants to be prepared with the right music, the songs and artists that will elicit obvious enjoyment. “You want people to have fun,” Malik says, “and as a DJ, you’re trying to make a lot of people happy. If Grandma wants to line dance, but nobody else does, you let Grandma line

dance.” If the music he plays gets people to act out in an exuberant way, that makes for great pictures and even better memories. Malik’s natural tendency to shy away from socializing, though not typical of a DJ, is what makes him a stellar one. He’s able to observe the people in a room and intuitively understand what song should be played next. Even if he gets it wrong — though that happens less often now that he’s been DJing so long — he knows how to handle himself and the music he’s playing without missing a beat. Malik Thorne stands quietly apart in an industry of noise. Even in speaking to Malik for a small bit of his day, it was easy to see that’s why he’s one of the best. Because he orbits the scene, he is able to communicate with music and perfectly capture the vibe of the day. While it seems that many DJs are focused on themselves, Malik deflects attention, so he can ensure his couples are happy on their happiest day.

Setting the Table with a lovely creative B Y K E L S E Y E I T R A M , A LO V E LY C R E AT I V E PHOTOS BY ASHLEY LUDAESCHER

The colors and overall aesthetic of this editorial were heavily inspired by fresh, warmer weather and al fresco dining! I wanted to keep the tablescape simple, fresh and light. An elaborate tabletop is always beautiful, but going a minimalistic route is a little more challenging to make tabletop components seem purposed and while keeping interest. White is always going to add light and freshness, so I chose to use All About Event’s brand new white washed Plymouth tables with a textural cream, suede runner from Blush Linens. With larger colorful blooms from April Flowers, I didn’t want a competing runner, so we kept it simple here, just breaking up the table down the middle with neutral texture, leaving the blooms to shine!

arm Sunday mornings are my favorite. This particular Sunday morning has presented t-shirt weather, and I’m walking up the path into the heart of Higuera Ranch, eyeing an adorable vintage truck and fumbling through my partiallymemorized interview questions for part-owner Kristin Pinter.

Pictured: Higuera Ranch Owner, Kristin Pinter and Venue Manager, Chris Cuto

As my gaze scans across gorgeous green pastures and vineyards, a smiling Kristin greets me in front of the red barn, cowgirl boots and all. She leads me into the lofty building, promising a property-wide tour shortly. As we settle into bar stools along the barn’s long oak bar, I ask Kristin to start from the very beginning - I want the full story on this little slice of heaven. “Well, there’s two families that own the ranch, both involved in the cattle and dairy industry in the Central Valley,” she begins. “Our family was just looking to get a little rental as an investment, and the other family wanted to buy a vineyard. This ranch was a vineyard back then [in 2014] and they asked if we wanted to buy it with them. We had been thinking of something more beachy, but we said sure!” The plot of the story veered away from vines and wine when California decided to intervene. “We bought a vineyard in a drought, so we had to pull out ten acres of vines right away,” Kristin explains with a laugh.

87

“We had to kind of rethink our business plan. We started doing vacation rentals out of the two houses, which were already here.” While the ranch homes became popular for vacations, it was something else that caught the eye of some of the visiting guests. The original 1904 dairy barn, which lies at the front and center of the property, appealed to many as the perfect spot to say their ‘I do’s. Kristin tells me that they were originally surprised with the interest in using the property as a wedding venue. “We started having people ask if they could get married here in the barn, and it’s just a dairy barn! It still had stalls and we were like, ‘Sure…really?’ It didn’t look anything like what it does now.” “As more and more people asked about weddings, we decided to shift to the whole destination weekend. We still really liked the idea of them staying in the houses.” And so it began - Kristin’s vision for the ranch was to offer a rustic wedding venue, still with all the perks of a long weekend vacation. I asked Kristin to walk me through a typical wedding weekend timeline, just so I could get an idea of everything that goes into a destination wedding, Higuera style. “What we tell our couples is that we want them to utilize the ranch the whole time,” she explains. “Usually on Friday morning, the bridal party will come and either swim or be at the shooting range, or just hang out on the property and do a picnic. They’ll typically do the rehearsal dinner right here at the red barn, or up at the pool that night. On Saturday

morning, hair and makeup will arrive, and the bride and her party will be in one house with their mimosas getting ready, while the guys are in a total separate area doing their guy thing.”

ranch as possible over their wedding weekend. A shooting range, hiking trails, horseshoe pit, pool, jacuzzi, and outdoor barbecue area are all options for the bridal party and friends, before and after the wedding.

The details of the ceremony and reception are completely unique and imagined by each couple, with 80 acres of possibility waiting as their canvas. “We don’t do cookie cutter here. Couples can come on and dream and do their ceremony wherever,” Kristin says. “We’ve had some couples that find a field somewhere on the ranch and they love it, so they put down some boho rugs and chairs and go for it! We’ve had ceremonies everywhere.”

“We encourage people to utilize spaces other than where they are getting married, so that when guests are coming, they get to see a different piece of the ranch every time,” Kristin adds. “It’s non-stop. Wedding weekend is fun! There’s always something going on.”

In addition to the endless locations for the ceremony, Kristin also hopes that guests will use and enjoy as much of the

90

And the party doesn’t have to leave with the wedding guests! With a huge smile, Kristin continues into the postwedding activities, which I can only assume is one of her favorite parts.

TWS VOLUME II

“The cool thing happens after the wedding, when all the guests leave, and the wedding party stays and goes to the pool to continue the fun! The next morning, they can do a lowkey brunch and open gifts,” Kristin says. “I love the relationships that grow over the four days. You have two families that are now one, and they can just sit by the pool and share memories from the night before.”

Capturing the love in Kristin’s voice as she talks about the ranch and the special things that happen here is a daunting task - words on paper just don’t suffice. She melts at the memories of a bride and groom’s first look, and adores the hugs between father and daughter. She collects little moments like these, and it’s easy to see how much of her own heart is right here on Higuera Ranch.

Between all the beautiful weddings she’s been a part of - all the food and drinks, dresses and dancing - I have to wonder what Kristin’s favorite part about her job is. Can she even narrow it down?

With a smile that has lasted throughout the interview, Kristin wraps up our conversation with the perfect description of what she does here for so many couples. “We want the ranch to feel like home for couples. We get to bring dreams to life here, that’s what we do…it’s not even a job!”

She answers without hesitation. “Once I got to meet some of the couples and see their joy, it became addictive! And if the main house walls could talk… I just love all of the memories that have been made there. That’s where mom sees her daughter in her dress for the first time, where grandma told some sweet story. I love those memories.”

hen planning your wedding on California’s Central Coast, it pays to be adventurous. After all, this is a land of mountains, forests, vineyards and ocean – all of which beg to be explored and enjoyed as you get closer to your big day. Indeed, whether you are seeking venues for pre-wedding parties or are in search of tips for out-of-town guests, the Central Coast wine country has something for everyone, including remarkable wines, small-town hospitality and culinary experiences that rival the big cities. On that note, here are some of our favorite places and wines to help you make the most of your Central Coast wedding experience.

OUTDOOR THRILLS AND EPICUREAN DELIGHTS For starters, you may want to consider the zipline tour at Margarita Adventures, which is known as “the biggest thrill in wine country.” With six distinct ziplines that soar over vines, oaks, and valleys on the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, the Margarita Adventures tour is an experience like no other. The tour begins with an epic 2,800-foot tandem-line thrill ride and finishes with an 1,800-foot journey over Pinot Noir vines. Needless to say, this tour is perfect for bachelor or bachelorette parties, or for an exciting outing with your wedding party. You can also add an epicurean twist to your zipline tour with the “Zip ‘n Sip VIP” package, which includes wine tasting and gourmet bites at the affiliated Ancient Peaks Winery. With this package, you will enjoy a guided Legacy Tasting at the nearby Ancient Peaks Tasting Room & Café after your zipline tour. During this tasting, a personal wine educator guides guests through a tasting of the winery’s limitededition Pearl Collection bottlings and library selections paired with cheese and charcuterie.

If you are not quite up for a zipline tour, but still love fine wine and food, you can consider Ancient Peaks as a standalone experience. This winery produces acclaimed wines from its estate Margarita Vineyard. Here, five distinct soil types – including fields of ancient oyster fossils – produce wines with natural structure and elegance. The winery can customize tasting experiences for groups of various sizes. Another tasty destination is Talley Vineyards in the Arroyo Grande Valley, which is one of California’s notable longtime producers of estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In addition to making wine for two generations, the Talley family has farmed their land since 1948. The tasting room provides sweeping views of the vineyards and valley. While there, don’t miss the vineyard-designated Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from the winery’s famed Rincon Vineyard. The Chardonnay is a perfect match for prawns, while the Pinot Noir offers stunning varietal expression. The affiliated Talley Farms also operates the Central Coast’s biggest “community supported agriculture” program, allowing you to pick up farm-fresh produce from both the Talley property as well as other local farms.

KICK BACK AND SAVOR If you prefer to do your wine country adventuring at a relaxed pace, then head on over to Niner Wine Estates in Paso Robles. Here, you will find great wines, fine fare and a beautifully designed patio that looks out onto the winery’s Heart Hill Vineyard. The name is a tribute to a heart-shaped grove of oak trees along the hillside in the middle of the vineyard. You have to see it to believe it! The Niner restaurant was named one of “the best winery restaurants in America” by Food & Wine magazine. You can enjoy a gourmet lunch while trying Niner’s diverse lineup of estate-grown wines from three vineyards – Heart Hill and Bootjack Ranch in Paso Robles, as well as Jesperson Ranch in the cooler Edna Valley. One wine you won’t want to miss is their flagship Fog Catcher Cuvée, which is a Bordeaux-style blend with excellent structure and complexity. Next, travel deeper into the coastal mountains of westside Paso Robles to visit Halter Ranch Vineyard, where you can tour their extensive wine caves and learn about the art of blending. You will also be blown away by the majestic setting and the amazing views from the tasting room. Make sure you try their estategrown Cabernet Sauvignon, which is one of the finest you will find in Paso Robles. NINER

Another beautiful spot is Biddle Ranch Vineyard in the Edna Valley. Here, winery co-owner and famed local interior designer Anne Fortini has created a unique atmosphere that oozes casual coastal ranch elegance. A bright, airy tasting room is complemented by outdoor seating that beckons you and your friends to share a bottle and stay a while. Biddle Ranch’s cool-climate Syrah is one worth seeking out.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN Of course, these suggestions are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg here on the Central Coast. In terms of sheer possibilities, this is one of the most wide-open wedding destinations in the nation. Hiking, kayaking, surfing, fine dining, wine tasting, beach weddings, ranch weddings, vineyard weddings – just about anything is possible here. So go forth, explore and make your day entirely your own. MARGARITA ADVENTURES

From Lovelyfest: “Our inspiration for the design of this dinner party all started with one look at the beautiful rusty-colored silos at Halter Ranch. From the moment we saw these stunning silos, our design wheels started turning, and we began to come up with a color palette that would complement these well. Our palette consisted of a rich teal blue, copper, white, soft pink, and black. We blended this moody palette with rich textures and unexpected details to create a unique design. After touring the property, we noticed that Halter Ranch did a great job of blending modern, updated spaces with their more rustic vineyard surroundings. This inadvertently inspired us to design an event with a more fresh and modern feel. We filled the barn with bohemian lounge furniture, draped the walls in white chiffon to create a more intimate atmosphere,

and used color to cohesively blend our cocktail hour design with the dinner party. For the dinner party in front of the silos, we created an intimate, moody vibe using some amazing rentals, velvet linens and lots of rich colors. Since it was a dinner party for other wedding vendors, we wanted to go outside of the current trends, and try our hand at colorblocking! We used both copper and white metal chairs, and alternated napkin shades at each chair, with mauve napkins at the white chairs, and white napkins at the copper chairs. It’s details like this that set this dinner party apart. At each place setting was a booklet style menu complete with silk tassels that we created to showcase Trumpet Vine Catering’s familystyle tapas courses. It was the most magical dinner party under the twinkling lights and stars!”

From Kacey: “The barn at Flying Caballos Ranch is really the first of its kind on the Central Coast, and displays such beautiful industrial features, from colored LED lights to vintage glass light bulbs and reclaimed tin siding. It was such a fun process for Denise from Flowers By Denise and I to echo those details throughout the floral displays, using mirrors to reflect the space and pay homage to the modern industrial nature of the barn’s design through the table settings and napkin rings. The mirrored vessels on the table mimicked the levitating nature of the hanging installation over the DJ, which twinkled with small strands of mirrored pieces as well. I brought some romantic softness and a little punk vibe in through the linens and bar draping, in rich textures like midnight velvet mixed unexpectedly with sheer black overlays. A modern update on vintage details, such as the truck from The Station and the airstream from Farmhouse Catering, pulled the whole experience together. As the sun went down, we highlighted the space with more lighting elements, expertly placed by Bella Vista designs. Jake from Bella Vista Designs was a major influence on my decision to bring color into the space, which doesn’t always work well, but was such a fun element in this design! They also provided the perfected structural installation and accompanying pendant lights on the outdoor patio, which looked right at home with the vintage bulbs inside the barn. Greer expertly chose pieces from her insanely beautiful Scout Rental Co. to furnish the multiple lounges throughout, indoor and outdoor, which served as a neutral palate cleanser against the chaos of the large table design, which dominated the majority of the barn. Overall, I would say every single vendor bought into my vision of going as “anti-barn design” as we could, to really show the versatility of this great addition to Flying Caballos!”

This party was started with a retro country club glam inspiration shoot and mock wedding, which then turned into a stunning reception, which included a three-course meal, tasty desserts, cocktails, and dancing! This was a memorable, fun-filled night of community. As the sun set for the night over the beautiful lake and lush green grass of the golf course, one couldn’t help but feel the warm sense of community that was brought together by the elegant charm of the Paso Robles Golf Club. Ciel Bleu Event Design designed the perfect space for the evening, the power team of Linden Clover captured all of the amazing images, Adornments Flowers decked out the space with stunning florals, and Flowers by Kim softened the patio and interior with beautiful draping. The Paso Robles Golf Club provided not only the stunning venue, but also bar service and catering of a delicious three-course meal. It was a special night of amazing food, drinks, and company at the Paso Robles Golf Club!

From the designer, Azurae, of Ciel Bleu Events: “I wanted to bring a piece of the golden days, where people met at the golf club. It was the Who’s Who of every small community! We wanted to bring in a little bit of old-school California glamour - like the Jackie O/Rat Pack days in Palm Springs: palm trees, warm sunshine, fresh cocktails, elegant details, fine furnishings. I loved taking a somewhat plain, everyday patio and transforming it into an elegant al fresco dining space! It was equally as exciting to give the interior banquet room a complete facelift using draping, lighting, tons of furniture, and amazing florals! Both spaces were unrecognizable!”

MARCH 2019

MA R FARM VEN UE L AUNCH

Designed by owner Jill Marshall, Edna Valley’s brand new farmhouse, MarFarm, features a fun and fresh concept, with thoughtful nods to the history of the property. The property was originally a horse barn, with a long row of stables that now serves as the hallway focal point and a great space for gatherings of all types. In addition to being a perfect space for special events, the property is available for vacation rentals for the perfect weekend getaway. MarFarm launched their venue in the most fun way with The Wedding Standard, at an exclusive three-course dinner, designed by Vanessa from Vanessa Noel Events. Guests arrived in style thanks to Elegant Image Limousine, enjoying a start to the party on the way into Edna Valley, and up the long road to MarFarm. The

farmhouse is tucked away for an exclusive getaway, and guests enjoyed watching the green rolling hills on the drive in. A long table for guests, nestled in the horse barn, was adorned with florals from Fluid Bloom Designs, terra cotta inspired tabletop rentals from Onyx and Redwood, and fun vineyard chairs and the sweetest hanging lights from Avenue Twelve Rentals. Guests gathered on specialty lounges with pieces from Scout Rental Co and Avenue Twelve, and whimsical florals provided the perfect space for guests to sit and enjoy beautiful views. A custom sign with linen and wooden details from FĂŞte and Quill showcased all of the artists who helped the night come to life. Each place setting featured a custom menu and welcomed guests to their seats with custom name cards

from FĂŞte and Quill, and fresh linens from La Tavola Fine Linen. Head Chef Tom can typically be found at SLO Brew Rock creating and serving specialty bar cuisine, but his talent and flare for flavors was clear in the creation of the impressive three-course meal he created for the evening, with fresh and unexpected elements in each savory dish. Tom serves as the exclusive caterer for MarFarm, and loves working with guests to create something custom that showcases fresh ingredients and farm-to-table inspired menus. Owner Jill Marshall and hospitality manager Casey Sperbeck shared a few words on the inspiration and love behind the space. The farmhouse was crafted to be the perfect blend of high-end and casual, according to Jill. Live-in animal and authentic elements of the barn add to the casual farm feeling, while bespoke design elements and the spacious house create a one-of-a-kind space. The night ended with affogatos from Negranti Creamery and fresh biscotti from Paper Cake Events. Pulling right up to the barn, the Negranti truck was the perfect way to end the evening in sweet style. Guests took home fun photo strips from The Photo Booth Experience, the perfect memory from a fun-filled night!
