Brent Hassert is likeable and smart. He served as the 85th State Legislative District Representative until last November when voters replaced him with a new State Representative, Emily McAsey. That did not alter the fact that Brent is a nice man; an honest man. It does not alter the fact that

this reporter has enjoyed a good relationship with Brent. But—truth must trump friendship. On Wednesday June 17th Brent Hassert attended a fundraiser. Brent Hassert being the straightforward person that he is confronted this reporter and said, “You’ve been saying some really nasty things about me [in the newspaper].” He was not mean, he was cordial but obviously bothered about the information that has been published about him. The “nasty things” Brent referred to were probably a question raised as to the authenticity of a letter that allegedly bore his signature, stating Hassert loaned some posts to John Noak. Public Works employees accused Noak supporters of illegally using posts that belonged to the Romeoville Public Works Department for Noak’s election campaign. The letter was questionable because beneath what was allegedly his signature the letter said, “Former Representative of the 83rd District.” For years Brent Hassert was

the State Representative for the 85th District. It seems he would have caught that error had he signed the letter. The letter indicated that Hassert loaned a substantial number of steel posts to Noak on which to mount his 4 x 4 signs. There was no evidence in Hassert’s Election Board D-2 forms to show that he ever purchased such posts, and there was no indication that anyone ever donated such posts to him. That would show up as “In Kind Contributions”. Second, the articles that criticized the hiring of Brent Hassert as a “consultant” to the Village of Romeoville probably annoyed him. The articles reminded the public it is paying State Senator AJ. Wilhelmi, and State Representative Emily McAsey to represent Romeoville and other constituents in Springfield. Since Hassert is a defeated official, and since his party is the minority party in Springfield, it is doubtful that he can have much influence on what takes place in the capitol. He is being paid $3,600 per month by the Village of Romeoville and $3,600 a month by the Will County Forest Preserve District to bring dollars home to those governmental bodies over and above what the elected Senator and the elected State Representative will obtain for them. Some folks are just naturally popular and others must earn the respect of their fellow citizens. Senator A.J. Wilhelmi has the pleasant distinction for enjoying both those characteristics. Senator Wilhelmi represents the people of the 43rd Senatorial district and enjoys tremendous popularity within the ranks of his peers in the Illinois senate and the Illinois Houses of Representatives. On Wednesday June 17th, the Friends of Senator Wilhelmi conducted a fundraiser at the 176 Electricians Hall on I-55 East Frontage Road. Senator Wilhelmi enjoyed the support of not only loyal Democrats but of Republicans who also respect him for his integrity and devotion to the people of Illinois. If there

has ever been an ideal politician, Wilhemi would no doubt fit that bill. He is a gentlemen, a person of honor and a dedicated family man; exactly what anyone might expect of someone they send to Springfield. Often at fundraisers the key Continued on

(ARA) - Homeownership and green improvements will be more affordable for more Americans in 2009, thanks to several provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The changes will put more money in taxpayers’ pockets and allow homeowners to save thousands of dollars over the next several years. The First-time Homebuyer Credit has been extended and increased to qualifying individuals who purchase a home in 2009 before Dec. 1. Firsttime homebuyers are defined as those who have never owned a principal residence or who have not owned a principal residence at any time during the three years prior to the date of purchase. For 2008 and 2009 tax returns, the credit is equal to 10 percent of the home purchase price, up to $8,000. It phases out when modified adjusted gross income is $75,000 for an individual or $150,000 for joint filers. Married taxpayers must both qualify as “first-time homebuyers in order to receive the full credit.

Taxpayers who claimed the full $8,000 First-time Homebuyer Credit on their 2008 federal return cannot claim it on their 2009 return. Those who have not claimed the credit should determine which year to use it based on your in-

come. If you expect your income to decrease in 2009, it will likely make more sense to claim the credit on your 2009 return rather than your 2008 return. The only scenario in which the credit must be paid back is if the home ceases to be the owners’ principal residence within 36 months of the purchase date. Then the full credit amount must be repaid on the federal return for that tax

year. The credit was initially created to be claimed after a home is purchased, but the Obama administration is now allowing qualifying taxpayers to use it to cover certain purchasing costs. Homebuyers with mortgages backed by the Federal Housing Administration may be eligible to receive advances on the credit, which could be used for closing costs, fees and additional money for a down payment beyond the FHA’s required 3.5 percent minimum. Anyone can apply for an FHA-backed mortgage, regardless of income. However, there are limits on the size of the mortgage, and lenders may charge a fee for the credit. Some states are also offering similar programs. The new stimulus plan also includes tax credits equal to 30 percent, up to $1,500, for certain energy-efficient improvements to residential properties. The Residential Energy Property Credit can be claimed on 2009 and 2010 returns for improvements such as adding insulation or installing energy-efficient windows, doors, or heating and air conditioning systems. Bigger improvements involving alternative energy equipment such as solar Continued on

nity over the past 14 years. The services the Children’s Advocacy Center provides are seriously jeopardized by this loss of state revenue. And when it comes to crime prevention, I consider preschool teachers to be among the strongest allies to law enforcement. Studies show that preschool cuts crime. Children who are not enrolled in a quality early childhood education program are 70 percent more likely to be arrested than those who are. I am troubled that preschools will lose half of their students if the state budget stands. In Will County, almost 1,000 children stand to lose their places in preschool programs. These cuts will have a devastating effect on families immediately, and they will make my job much harder in the future. We must do everything possible to ensure safe communities. We must find a way to solve our state’s fiscal problems and restore this funding now.

Sincerely, James W. Glasgow Will County State’s Attorney

June 19, 2009 As Will County’s State’s Attorney, I have dedicated my career not only to taking criminals off our streets, but to preventing crimes from occurring in the first place. However, the state’s budget crisis will make it extremely difficult for me to perform my job on several fronts. The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, which I established in 1995 to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse, is facing an $86,000 loss in state revenues from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. This is a drastic cut that threatens the operations of a small notfor-profit agency that has played a critical role in removing hundreds of dangerous child sexual predators from our commu-

If you’re somewhat familiar with investing, you probably have heard that owning mutual funds is a good way to help diversify your portfolio. Is this true? And, if so, how should you go about selecting the right mutual funds? To begin with, let’s quickly review the importance of diversification. By owning a variety of investments— such as stocks, bonds and government securities — you can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. And while diversification by itself cannot guarantee profits nor protect against a loss, a diversified portfolio can help you reduce the impact of market downturns that may hit one asset class particularly hard. Because an individual mutual fund invests in many different securities, it automatically brings a certain degree of diversification to your portfolio. And yet, you can’t just purchase any combination of mutual funds and expect good results. Consider this: There are more than 8,000 mutual funds in the financial marketplace, according to the Investment Company Institute, the trade group for the mutual fund industry. About 60 percent of these funds are stock funds, with the rest being “hybrid” or “balanced” funds (which invest in a mix of stocks and bonds), taxable bond funds, municipal bond funds, and money market funds. With such a large number of funds available, and with a finite amount of stocks, bonds and other securities in which these funds can invest, it’s easy to see

(ARA) - When it comes to healthful aging, a preventive approach is the key to success. By implementing some simple healthy habits today, we can achieve a healthier future. “Our bodies’ health -- particularly as we age -- requires that we take precautionary measures to strengthen ourselves,” explains Don-

nica L. Moore, MD, women’s health expert and advocate, and editor in chief of Women’s Health for Life (DK 2009). Consider her tips for healthful aging as part of an improved wellness plan. Sleep Smart: Sleep not only helps revive the body, but also the mind. Research shows that skimping on sleep can have serious effects such as an increased risk of developing memory loss, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Getting enough rest encourages a positive mood, healthy weight and better skin elasticity. If falling asleep is challenging, try lighting a soothing lavender candle or lowering the room temperature to help cool the body’s core temperature to a comfortable sleeping level. Lather Up: Warm weather entices many

people outdoors, but sun safety is essential. Aside from same-day dangers, like sunburn and heat exhaustion, overexposure to the sun can cause premature aging and, in some cases, skin cancer. To safely enjoy the summer season, apply -- and reapply -- an oil-free, anti-aging sun block every day for skin that is properly moisturized and protected from damaging UVA and UVB rays. Also, remember to wear a hat and sunglasses to help protect the scalp and eyes. Shield Your Smile: The health of your smile is influenced by daily dental health routines, as well as dietary factors. Enamel loss can occur when acids from everyday food and beverages, such as fruit, yogurt, salsa, orange juice and sports drinks, attack the tooth surface. If left untreated, the result can be irreversible enamel loss, which can lead to larger issues such as cavities, sensitivity, veneers, dentures and even oral surgery. New Crest Pro-Health Enamel Shield toothpaste contains the active ingredient stannous fluoride, which binds to enamel to create a micro-thin shield against acid attack. It protects all these areas dentists check most: cavities, gingivitis, plaque, sensitivity, tartar, fresh breath and whitening. Exercise and Energize: People who exercise frequently not only look better, but they feel better too. The shortterm effects of exercise include better stress management and increased energy. Long-term benefits include easier weight control, stronger bones and muscles and a decreased risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. Consider tennis, golf, yoga and walking as these activities can be catered to any fitness level and age. Aging is unavoidable, but the transition can be made easier -- and healthier -- by implementing a few small daily habits that have positive effects on the body and overall wellness.

The

Destruction of an

Eating Disorder Anaheim , Ca – There are some struggles in life that test the fabric of a character and the strength of a bond. Miracles Happen . . . Sometimes (published by iUniverse), by Cliff Koch is the story of one such struggle. Just six months after their marriage, Pam and Cliff Koch were faced with devastating medical problems. The flu-like symptoms Pam had experienced just before their wedding had returned. X-rays revealed major problems in her abdomen and intestines, requiring immediate surgery despite the risk posed by her high fever. Though the surgery was successful, it was just the beginning of this couple’s four-year struggle to regain health and normalcy. Pam’s surgery had saved her life, but it also caused her to lose a lot of weight, and as she recovered, she became obsessed with maintaining her unhealthy physique. Despite repeated hospitalizations and counseling sessions to treat her eating disorder, Pam was never able to regain control. Miracles Happen . . . Sometimes is a true chronicle of this couple’s journey. It began as a way for Pam to share her experiences and document her ordeal. In the end, it also serves as a reminder of the very real dangers posed by eating disorders. At Pam’s request, Cliff also contributed to the book, helping to bridge the gaps created during her hospital stays and periods of time spent in a coma. Each perspective offers a different view of this story about a couple’s commitment to each other no matter the circumstances. Cliff Koch was born in Berwyn, Ill., but moved with his family as a child to Southern California. There he spent a typical childhood, actively participating in sports and school activities. After graduation from high school, Koch received a B.A. in Psychology from California State University at Fullerton. It was here that Koch met Pamela, the woman he would eventually marry and about whom this book is written. Koch has been working in the claims department of the same insurance company for 30 years. In his free time, he enjoys travel and watching both college and professional football. He currently resides in Anaheim, Calif. iUniverse is the premier book publisher for emerging, self-published authors. For more information, please visit www.iuniverse. com.

(ARA) - The grill is, perhaps, the main reason why many people gain weight during the summer. It’s not just the grilled ribs, steaks, hot dogs and burgers, either. It’s the potato and macaroni salads that we pile on the side, and the much-loved

ambrosia recipes that wrap normally healthy fruits into a mountain of whipped cream. And it’s all those sugary drinks we find refreshing. But take heart. Your next barbecue doesn’t have to pack a punch with extra pounds. Registered nurse Carla Cocco, practical nursing clinical coordinator at Brown Mackie College -- Cincinnati, offers some sensible advice on how to avoid extra calories. “Instead of grilling ribs and sausages, substitute these high-fat meats with chicken, fish or pork. Pork tenderloin is virtually as lean as chicken breast,” she says. “It is important, though, to use a meat thermometer to ensure the meat is cooked thoroughly.” In a U.S. government partnership program called the National Food Safety Program, the Food and Drug Administration collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies to promote safe internal cooking temperatures. They recommend minimum internal temperatures of 165 F for poultry, 145 F for salmon, and 160 F for pork. “You can pull a pork roast from the grill when the temperature is a few degrees lower,” says Cocco, “because it needs to sit for 10 minutes before serving. During that time, the internal temperature will rise.” While summer weight gain can be minimized by grilling leaner meats and fish, you can also ward off extra pounds by considering portion size.

Chances are, when grazing the food table, you will see plenty of dishes you want to taste. “We often want to sample everything,” says Cocco. “The key here is ‘sample.’ Take smaller portions of each item. Instead of a half cup of potato salad, take just a quarter cup.” Spoon a portion size on to your plate that would fit in the palm of your hand. Then move on. “Portion sizes for meats are even smaller,” Cocco adds. “Just 3 to 4 ounces is the recom-

mended serving size.” Substitution is a big summer rule of thumb. “Instead of nibbling on cheese and crackers, try fruit chunks dipped in yogurt,” recommends Cocco. “Instead of ice cream treats, give the kids sugar-free popsicles. They’re still cool and sweet and contain only about 15 calories.” Substitutions can go a long way toward maintaining a healthy diet. For instance, you can enjoy potato salad with fewer calories by using a vinegarand-oil-based dressing, like German potato salad. “Adding nuts to the dish provides huge benefits in terms of vitamins and protein,” Cocco says. She also suggests drinking water after your first glass of soda, lemonade or wine. “Don’t drink your calories, especially when there is so much else to taste,” she advises. Other healthy summer tips focus on activity levels. When attending a barbecue hosted by another, offer to help serve or clean up. When you’re busy, you are less likely to eat as much. “After all, you’re there to visit with people, not gorge,” says Cocco. “You can also park down the street, and walk to the home. Every step counts.” Above all, whether you’re the host or a guest, join in on the outdoor fun. Pick up a badminton racket, or get in on a game of horseshoes or volleyball. Even toss a few water balloons. That’s what summer is all about.

Affordable Digital Hearing Aids For Baby Boomers ................................................................ info@theweeklyreporter.com

................................................................

(PRWEB)—As people born in the generation called the “Baby Boomers” continue to age, hearing loss is becoming more and more prevalent. However, some Boomers may not even seek treatment or assistance with their hearing loss because of the time constraints, and more commonly, the expenses involved in getting the ear hearing aids they need. MyHearPod.com has opened up that market by providing an entirely new concept for hearing devices. The mission of MyHearPod.com is to provide quality, effective, and comfortable hearing aids at a fraction of the price. HearPods are made with cutting edge technology and if properly cared for can last for years. They do this primarily by educating the patient and showing them how to maintain their hearing aids. Rather than setting up a doctor’s appointment each time the hearing aids need to be cleaned

or adjustments need to be made due to their hearing changing, the wearer can watch videos on the MyHearPod.com web site about how to maintain and adjust their hearing aids, and thus save the expense of a doctor visit. Traditional hearing aids can cost between $4,000 and $8,000, while a MyHearPod.com hearing aid costs between $495 and $1,095. “It’s our goal to provide real solutions to people with hearing loss, when they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to get anything,” owner of MyHearPod. com, Randy Wohlers BC HIS, said. Wohlers makes it clear that MyHearPod.com hearing devices are not for everyone. “We provide a 24/7 customer service phone number to our customers, to assist with any questions about cleaning or servicing hearing aids; but some people would rather pay the extra expense at a doctor’s office and not have to do the work themselves. It’s not for everyone,” Wohlers stated. For more information about high frequency hearing loss or obtaining an open fitting for a hearing aid, visit http://www.myhearpod.com/ or contact Randy Wohlers at 1-800-851-2414.

able to report disability parking abuse through the Secretary of State’s Web site. The public can go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com when they see people violating the Persons With Disabilities Parking Program. “We’re pleased to use technology to make it easier for the public to alert us to people that wrongfully abuse this meaningful program,” White said. “We want to catch those individuals who take these vital spaces from those who are truly in need.” People can now report able-bodied people parking in disability parking spaces or using disability placards without the disabled individual in the vehicle. People can make the report anonymously, but they must be able to report the license plate, disability placard, or disability plate number. White also warns people never to confront the abuser. To report abuse, go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com and on the home page click on the icon that says “Complaint Form Parking for Persons With Disabilities.”

Singapore Schools Dominate 2009 World Scholar’s Cup

School’s Out – But Where Will Your Kids Play?

....................................................................... Ka-Boom – Washington D.C info@theweeklyreporter.com .......................................................................

Summer is here, and soon, children across the country will be sprinting out the school doors. But now that they’re out, where will they go? In a study commissioned by KaBOOM! and conducted by Harris Interactive® of 1,677 parents with children between the ages of 2-12, 59% of parents report that their children don’t have access to a community playground. In the lowest income bracket, that number goes up to 69%. KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to bringing play back into the lives of children, commissioned the study to find out what parents think about play, and how much time their children play outside every day. In a speech last week, President Obama himself sited the importance of playgrounds in helping our children get into healthier habits, and KaBOOM! has spent the last 14 years building more than 1,600 playgrounds in low-income communities and championing the cause of play in thousands more. This study shows that while the message is getting out about the importance of play in a child’s life, children still don’t have enough time and space to play every day. In terms of importance, 96% of parents said that playing outside was critical

to keep kids physically fit, but only 17% thought children played enough outside. Parents report that their kids spend less than an hour per day engaged in unstructured play outdoors, on average and 92% of parents say that children today spend less time playing outside than they did when they were growing up. To help fix the problem, parents also say they’re willing to do their fair share of the work to make sure their kids have a place to play. More than half said they’d be willing to help build new playgrounds, fundraise for equipment, and encourage schools to open their playgrounds during non-school hours. KaBOOM! empowers parents to achieve these goals, and has filled its website, kaboom.org, with online tools to give parents step-by-step guidance to build and improve their local playgrounds, work with others in their community, and learn what communities across the nation are doing to increase the amount of play in their kids’ lives. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of KaBOOM between March 31 and April 7, 2009, among 1,677 respondents who were selected from among parents with children between the ages of 2-12 who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys…No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2009 -- Nearly 100 high school and middle school teams from 13 countries gathered in Singapore last weekend to compete at the 2009 World Finals of the World Scholar’s Cup. “The teams began and ended the weekend as fierce rivals,” said Daniel Berdichevsky, the program director, “But along the way I watched many of them discover exactly how much they had in common. They’ve been befriending one another on Facebook ever since.” Events at the tournament included essays, team debates, written exams, and a grueling Scholar’s Bowl in which students worked together to answer questions in front of an audience. All

events centered on this year’s curriculum theme: the Fall of Empires. Teams learned the science of sustainable development, the economics of collapse, the art of decay and decadence, and the history, film, and literature of empires in decline. They also took part in a community-building scavenger hunt and performed in a debate showcase for the general public. “My students thoroughly enjoyed the international nature of the World Scholar’s Cup,” said Dr. Sakhar Nair, coach of the winning teams from Raffles Girls’ School in Singapore. “The organizers have done a brilliant job in bringing together scholars from everyContinued on

Community Health Center Ready To Offer School Physicals Joliet – The Will County Community Health Center, a division of the Will County Health Department, urges parents to plan now for the physical examinations children need for the 2009-2010 academic year. Physical and dental examinations are required for children entering kindergarten, 6th grade, and high school. The demand for physicals later this year is expected to be great, so the Community Health Center (1106 Neal Avenue in Joliet), strongly advises parents to schedule appointments now in order to avoid the last-moment rush. To schedule a back-to-school physical exam, telephone 815-727-8670. To schedule an appointment for a backto-school dental exam, telephone 815774-7300. All children must be accom-

panied by a parent or legal guardian. Children must bring previous immunization records if shots are required. Medicaid and private insurance are accepted. MasterCard and Visa may also be used. For enrollment HMO patients, co-payments are required at the time of the exam. Healthy children are quicker learners, and that is why the Illinois Child Health Examination Code requires periodic physical and dental exams. The Community Health Center provided physical exams for 1,587 Will County children during 2008. For more information about backto-school physicals, telephone 815727-8670. For information about immunization services, telephone 815740-8143.

International Manhunt Underway: You Can Help Find Them (PRWEB) Crime Stoppers USA’s 350-member programs, in partnership with Crime Stoppers International (CSI), has announced their collaboration in the first-ever worldwide manhunt for violent fugitives. Operation I.N.F.R.A. (International Fugitive Round Up and Arrest), supported by The U.S. Marshal Service, INTERPOL and other law enforcement agencies around the globe, is the first global initiative led by Crime Stoppers International. Crime Stoppers USA, a member of the CSI worldwide network, announced its full support for Operation INFRA. This initiative will help identify and capture fugitives wanted both domestically and internationally. Sixty five of those dangerous fugitives are believed to be hiding in the United States. Their photos and can be viewed by going to Crime Stoppers USA and clicking the International Fugitive Roundup link at the top of the home page. Each of these fugitives is believed to have fled their home country and could be hiding in any local community in the United States. “Crime Stoppers International has created a crime fighting resource which allows for every person in the world to have the ability to provide information to law enforcement agencies without being identified,” said Martin Renkewitz, Director of United States National Central Bureau of Interpol. “By all

countries working together to publicize these criminals we are making every community a safer place to live. All it

approach toward fugitive capture. By empowering citizens to anonymously report the whereabouts of these fugi-

takes is one person to recognize one of these fugitives, provide the location to Crime Stoppers anonymously, and law enforcement will do the rest.” “Crime Stoppers plays a vital role in providing information which aids in the apprehension of criminals across the country,” stated Director John F. Clark of the U. S. Marshals Service. “This international campaign is innovative and timely, we will support their efforts to the best of our ability.” “This is truly an international initiative,” says Tom Kern, Chairman of Crime Stoppers USA. “Fugitives hide across the globe in all cities large and small looking to escape justice and commit new crime in our communities. The international campaign ‘Operation INFRA’ supports a positive and proactive

tives, we enable anyone to safely assist in removing a potentially dangerous criminal from their community.” Since 1976, local Crime Stoppers programs in the United States have taken millions of anonymous calls and forwarded that information on to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Investigators have used the anonymous information to make nearly 500,000 felony arrests and recover over $4 billion in cash, illegal drugs, and stolen property. Now Crime Stoppers USA is asking all Americans to be on the lookout for these fugitives wanted for violent crimes: including murder, rape, kidnapping and crimes against children who may be hiding in the United States. Here is one example of the caliber of

criminal we’re talking about: David Macdonald Carrol: According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, David Carrol is a member in good standing with the Hells Angels criminal organization. In March 2001, a police operation targeting the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle organization was conducted to arrest several suspects for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, drug trafficking, conspiracy, and participation in gang activities. This operation, called Spring 2001, led to a number of searches and arrests, as well as the incarceration of several members of the Hells Angels and of an affiliated group, the Rockers. David Carrol is wanted in Canada in connection with these events. He is suspected of having caused the death of 13 people, of attempted murder, of conspiracy to commit murder, and of participation in gang activities, conspiracy, and drug trafficking. He may be residing in the United States. To learn more about the following fugitives as well others, go to Crime Stoppers USA and click on International Fugitive Roundup link. Additional information is available on each suspect as well as Crime Stoppers USA at Crime Stoppers USA, International Fugitive Roundup link. www. csiworld.org

Mensa Rocks Out at AMFM-AG National Convention Arlington, TX (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 16, 2009 -- What happens when more than a half million IQ points descend on a city? Pittsburgh will find out when they host the 2009 American Mensa National Convention. Ameri-

can Mensa is a social and community organization for those who score in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. Almost 1,700 Mensans are expected to attend the event in Pittsburgh, which will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel from July 1-5, 2009. During the event, members and guests can choose from more than 300 sessions on a variety of topics including nanotechnology, beauty, forensic science and fraud scams. A full list of events can be seen here: www.ag.us.mensa.org and clicking on ‘Playlist.’ “Our diverse membership from across the nation gathers together once a year to attend the Mensa national convention. The theme, ‘About Mensans, For Mensans Annual Gath-

ering’ (AMFM-AG) describes the convention perfectly,” said Mary Lee Kemper, 2009 AG Co-Chair. “Over the course of four days, members will listen to innovative programs, socialize at events and play exciting games. The convention is a place for members to meet with old friends and make new ones, all while having fun and learning about new things.” All activities are not just for Mensa members. The general public can see if they are Mensa smart by taking the $40 Mensa Admission Test on July 1 at 6:30 p.m. or July 4 at 9:30 a.m. The test is open to anyone 14 and older. People wishing to take the test should arrive 30 minutes early for registration and should bring a photo ID. Those under the age of 18 will need to have a parent with them at registration. “Pittsburgh is known for their innovative residents, which is why we wanted to offer the Mensa Admission Test twice during convention,” said Marc Lederman, 2009 AG Co-Chair. “It gives Pittsburgh a chance to understand what our organization is all about. If a person tests on Saturday, they can then stay for the day to enjoy the programs and meet members.” American Mensa is an organization open to anyone who scores in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. The organization has more than 57,000 members in the United States and more than 110,000 members around the world. Undocumented Workers to Get $4 Million Dollar Settlement Two construction workers from Mexico and a plumber from Ecuador will receive a settlement of nearly $4 million dollars from their employers for severe injuries received on the job. The settlement was reached after the case was before the New York State Supreme Court for two years. Attorney Brian O’Dwyer said some employers have been known to threaten workers with deportation to stop them from reporting dangerous work-

ing conditions or unfair working conditions. O’Dwyer said, “They don’t have hard hats, they don’t have scaffolding protections, they don’t have tie ons, they don’t have any of the things. They don’t even have decent shoes!” One of the workers who is expected to receive $600,000 says he will buy a house when he receives his share of the settlement.

(ARA) - There are few summer pastimes more honored than backyard grilling and entertaining. But before you fire up the grill for your next bash or weeknight dinner, you should learn how to properly select and grill fresh fish to perfection. The wood grilling specialists at Bonefish Grill -- a polished casual restaurant in 29 states -- offer these tips to help you choose your next meal, fresh from the water to mouth-watering. Selecting the best fish Always seek the freshest fish in your local area. Ask your fish market or grocery if they receive their fish daily or what frozen options they recommend, and which selections. Ask about the origin of the fish you’re buying, and make sure it has been stored at about 28 F at all times, no matter where it came from. If a fish smells “fishy,” don’t buy it and don’t eat it. Look for shiny skin and undamaged scales. Press firmly on the skin and make sure the fish regains its original shape quickly. Whole fish should have clear eyes, not cloudy. “One of the most flavorful ways to grill fish is on a wooden plank, which adds a smoky flavor,” says Master Chef Tony Seta. “Plank cooking also allows delicate food to cook more gently because the plank forms a barrier between the flame and the fish, and keeps fish from sticking to the grill and breaking.”

• • •

Bonefish Grill’s Wild Alaskan Cedar Plank Salmon with a Chorizo Topping

Chef Seta’s top tips for perfect wood grilling •Purchase grilling planks from

a gourmet food shop that are 1/4-inch thick and large enough for the fish. Do not use wood or shingles purchased from a home improvement store because they are chemically treated and not food-safe.

• Soak the planks in water for at

least three hours; this allows the wood to smoke and smolder without igniting on the grill. If the plank begins to flame on the grill, spray it with water. Skin-on fish like salmon cook best on a plank. If the filet has skin on, cut a few 1-inch slits (about 1/4-inch deep) on the skin side, season the filet and place on the plank. Grill at 450 F on medium-high flame, covered, for nine to 13 minutes (cook to an internal temperature of 135 to 140 F). If you’re in the mood for a night out instead of manning the barbeque, Chef Seta recommends the fresh fish dishes at Bonefish Grill. Try the seasonal favorite Cedar Plank Salmon with a Chorizo Topping, or recreate it at home any time of the year with this simple recipe. Visit www.BonefishGrill.com to find the location nearest you.

Cedar Plank Salmon Ingredients: 4 pieces wild Alaskan salmon, skin-on, 7 ounces each Salt and pepper, to taste 4 lemon halves Chorizo Topping 4 food-safe cedar planks (or one plank large enough to fit four pieces of fish) Chorizo Topping Ingredients: 8 ounces chorizo sausage links 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs Zest from 1 medium lemon Directions: Grill chorizo on a charcoal or gas grill until well done. Cool cooked sausage in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Using a food processor, chop sausage into pea-sized pieces. Place into mixing bowl and blend well with bread crumbs and lemon zest. Cover and refrigerate. Soak cedar plank(s) in water for at least 3 hours. Place salmon, skin side down, onto soaked cedar plank. There should be a 1-inch space between each piece of salmon. Season with salt and pepper. Divide chorizo topping into 4 equal portions and place on top of the fish. Place salmon on planks onto grill and close lid. Cook for 15 minutes. Note: The plank will char around the edges but should not catch flame. Place onto platter, drizzle with melted butter and squeeze fresh lemon juice over salmon. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Lockport Fish Food Pantry Receives Surprise Donation “Funds Needed Desperately In Summer Months” ............................................................... info@theweeklyreporter.com ...............................................................

“Neighbors helping Neighbors that’s what it’s all about”. That’s the theme at the Lockport FISH Food Pantry located at 604 West 9th Street in Lockport. The food pantry serves resident of Lockport and Homer Townships and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s 8:30 AM till 11:45 AM. Bruce Davis, President of the Lockport Food Pantry announced that WalMart has come through once again with a generous donation of $1,000.00. Last Christmas Wal-Mart donated $1500.00 to the pantry to be used for people in need. Davis says that WalMart has been the largest corporate supporter of the Lockport Food Pantry. Wal-Mart has not only contributed monetary donations but often donates milk and other items that are a special treat for clients since they normally don’t have the funds to distribute these types of items. The FISH food pantry originated in the early 80’s helping the needy in Lockport and Homer Townships. The pantry is staffed by approximately 25 caring volunteers that contribute many hours each week to make the pantry a success. Many changes have been made

over the last couple years including a new web site www.LockportFoodPantry.org the web site explains the history, requirements for new clients, location, a donation page for on-line donations and much more. Davis encourages everyone to take a few minutes and explore what is available for people in need in our community. The face of hunger has changed a lot in the last couple years. For many years most of our clients were the single moms walking in with a child in each hand or the senior who has worked all his life to lose his income and savings on doctor bills and medication. Lately we have seen many new clients with nice homes and cars with kids in college that have lost their jobs due to company closures and downsizing, that need just a little help to get back on their feet. That’s exactly what we’re here for.

“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” The FISH Food Pantry has seen a large increase of families over the last year. In June of 2008 it was serving approximately 160 families a month compared to this year of approximately 250 families or a 35% increase. Almost all the churches in Lockport Continued on

Preparing

Food For Your Dog ............................................................... By Guy Berg – Ezine Articles info@theweeklyreporter.com ...............................................................

Many people become wary of commercial brands of dog food. Not knowing what chemicals are used in the processing methods as well as exactly what meats are classed as ‘by products’ can be troubling. In light of the recent dog food recalls, people sometimes decide against feeding commercially prepared food to their dogs. Instead they choose to prepare their own dog food. However this requires some research and the correct amounts of everything that a dog needs. It might be a good idea to devise a weekly menu for your dog. This enables you to vary his food, provide him different flavors and give him a rotation of the right nutrients so that he will be getting a balanced diet. Just like people, dogs need a balance of protein, fats, starch and some vegetable intake too. Therefore your menu rotation can involve any mixture of the following things:

Proteins

• Any meat, in particular red meat or fish for higher protein. • Poultry will also provide some much needed nutrients. • Organs that many people do not eat are also very good for dogs too, such a kidneys, liver etc. • Eggs. Not only are they a good source of protein but they also help your dogs coat shine too.

Fats

Do not go overboard with these, since there are often fats included in the meat, but you can add a little cheese or a little butter, but no more than flavoring as some people do not like to feed much dairy to their dogs. Vegetable oil can be added, simply as a fat supplement.

Starch

• Potatoes, • Rice, • Oats • Pasta - these are all good sources of starch and are healthy too.

Vegetables

This is entirely up to you. Generally a dog will enjoy carrots, peas, corn, potatoes, beans etc. You can flavor vegetables with gravy if you have a picky eater. Once you have devised your food plan and concocted a nice menu, you should introduce it gradually to your dog. Try mixing half of your homemade food

with half of a tin of commercial food. Your dog will gradually become used to his new diet. He could experience symptoms such as diarrhea or belly ache, because of a sudden change in his food. A dogs system can become accustomed to certain foods. Always cook the food you give to your dog (meats and pasta and vegetables), however an egg can be fed raw as can dairy products and oats etc. If you opt for a raw food diet for your dog, be sure to do some research and gather any and all information you can get from your vet. The raw food diet is not for all dogs. Adding a little garlic to their food is a good way to flavor it, since dogs do tend to like it, but not too much since it can be toxic to them. Garlic is also useful as a flea repellant, since they sweat it through their pores and fleas try to avoid it. A homemade diet for your dog is a good idea for those worried about the contents and mixture of commercial brands, but you must be sure to get the right mixture of nutrients to ensure your dog’s health and well being. It may take some trial and error to find the right ingredients that your dog likes and that is good for him. Guy Berg is a respected author and dog advocate. The Summer Adventure (continued from last week)

.................................................... John Gabriel, Award Winning Writer jgabriel@theweeklyreporter.com

....................................................

Andy himself heard the noise; as brave as he wanted to be he was just as shaken as Kimmy. There was a scraping sound. It seemed someone was attempting to remove the screen from the window. There it was again. Sure enough the sound came from the screen on the window just beside the bed. There was more scraping and it was more pronounced, they listened intently. Suddenly there was a loud rasping sound that made it seem as if the screen was being torn from the window! Andy gripped Kimmy’s hand pulling her from the bed. They ran quickly to the door and raced down the hall shouting, “Dad, Mom, Grandma, Grandpa.” In a flash the rooms below were lit

brightly and the adults came quickly to the foot of the stairs to meet the two panting children. Kimmy ran into her mother’s arms. She cried loudly and pointed upwards toward the bedroom above. Her voice was broken and her words came haltingly. “Someone was trying to break in through the window,” she cried and buried her face into her mother’s shoulder. “Now, now, don’t be frightened Kimmy,” mother assured her. “I’m sure it’s nothing at all.” Grandpa and Father Al hurried up the stairs and began checking the rooms one by one. They opened each door, turned the light on in every room and looked in the closets and beneath the beds. Then they came to the room in which Andy and Kimmy had been sleeping. Grandpa opened the door and as he did so, a fleeting shadow passed over the wall to his left. As quickly as it appeared it disappeared. Grandfather pulled backward, surprised at the unexplained apparition. Almost immediately after the shadow crossed the wall and disappeared there was a soft sound that distinctly said, “Wooooo”. Father stepped inside, turned the on light and glanced about the room. The room was not very large and seeing nothing he hurried to the bed and peered beneath it. There was nothing there. Grandfather went to the closet and pulled the door open. It was empty except for Andy’s clothing that had been hung there when he and the others arrived. “I don’t know Al,” grandfather sighed, “There is nothing up here at all.” ‘Well, you and I both know we heard something and we saw something,” Father answered. Unexpectedly the “wooooo” sound returned accompanied by a scratching at the window; the shadow played upon the wall again. Father Al darted to the window and peered outside. The rain continued to fall but slowly. There were sudden powerful gusts of wind. Father broke into laughter, “I think we have our ghost Dad!” He laughed and opened the window. He shined his flashlight outside. “There is the ghost.” Grandpa had gone to the window and was beside him. “Well, I’ll be,” he chuckled. Then he and Father Al laughed long and hard together. There outside the window was a large bough from the tall oak that stood near to the bedroom window. The wind had cracked it at the trunk and it dangled precariously on a small piece of the bark swinging back and forth. Each time it swayed in the wind it cast a shadow across the room that showed on the wall beside the closet door. The smallest of the branches, filled with leaves, brushed across the screen each time the wind blew strongly. That was the scraping Andy and Kimmy had heard. “And there, if I am not mistaken,” said Grandpa, “is our ghostly wooooing.” The beam of his flashlight was shining upon a ladies stocking that had become draped across two branches. “Yep, each time the wind blows between the tree and the stocking it makes a spooky sound.” “Let’s tell the children,” Father said relieved and amused at the same time. He hurried on ahead of Grandpa to announce that the mystery had been solved.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) — SexReally.com is a new online destination for 20-somethings focused on relationships, love, sex, contraception, pregnancy, and related issues. Sponsored by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the site is a place where young people can tell their stories, discuss relationships, and learn more about avoiding unplanned pregnancy. “At present, seven in ten pregnancies among single twenty-somethings are described by women themselves as unplanned,” said Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. “This startling fact is an untold story and suggests that many young people simply are not thinking carefully enough about relationships, sex, and contraception—or the very real risk of unplanned pregnancy. We hope that SexReally. com (www.sexreally.com) will, in an engaging and authentic way, help people think critically about these important issues.” S e x Re a l l y. c o m provides opportunities for young adults to interact with and learn from one another. The site seeks to foster conversations about intimate relationships and to address major gaps in young adults’ knowledge about the reality and probabilities of pregnancy, the use of contraception, and many other closely related topics. The site will feature guest bloggers and illustrators in the months ahead, and will include polling, videos, and other content. The flagship offering is a blog and podcast series hosted by Laura Sessions Stepp, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist formerly of The Wash-

ington Post who has written for 15 years about young people and relationships. The podcasts will feature first-person stories on topics such as starting a relationship with sex and the “problem” with nice guys.

Dear Lindsey: I hope you will print this cause I know there are lots of people out there just like me. I’m 14 ½ and every Sunday I have to go to church because my mother and father say so. I don’t like church it is just boring to me. I really don’t know why people even go. It really sounds dumb for people to believe there is some little old man somewhere far away who watches every move we make. I don’t see why anyone would believe such a crock. I can’t understand why grown up people would believe in such fairy tales. Do you think I should have to go to church when I really don’t think it makes any sense?

Dear Ashamed: Millions of people, Jews, and others, were unmercifully killed during WWII. They were killed by Nazis; a perverted group of people who hijacked the German government. They deceived the German people into following their leadership. It would be unfair to say the German people were the killers, but it would also be unfair to deny that the killers were German. Most German people, including the soldiers who fought for their country were good decent people who did as their Government wished just as we usually do the bidding of our leaders. Our nation recently engaged in horrendous acts of torture but I do not blame the American people for those tragedies, they were developed and carried out by a group of political leaders not the people themselves. Be proud to be a German or any other nationality you may be. The individuals who carried out the WWII atrocities were crazed animals in quest of power and while they were in control at the time, they are not representative of the average citizens who had no say in the events of the day. Be proud of who you are; read and learn for yourself why you need not bear the guilt of the guilty. Many good Germans saved the lives of many Jews and others whom they befriended and loved.

> From Front An Open Response to Former Representative Hassert Brent Hassert is receiving $84,000 a year to represent taxpayers who told him in the November election they did not want him to represent them anymore. He must come to grips with that. He earned a pension as a state representative. There have not been any public announcements that he has obtained any money for the Forest Preserve District since he became its consultant early this

year. There is no evidence that he has any projects underway in Springfield to benefit Romeoville. So what is he doing for that $86,400? No one has located a Springfield office for Hassert. There is no evidence that he is making a regular commute to Springfield to lobby for anything. Remember, Hassert has no vote in Springfield. At best he must hope he can influence the Democratic majority in Spring-

field to do favors for him. But, if they do a favor for Brent they will be stepping on the toes of the Democrat Senator for the district and taking points away from the Democrat Representative who were chosen by the people to represent them. It would send a message that a defeated representative can do more for the community than the duly elected senator and representative for that district. That will not fly!

It is illogical to believe the Democratic Party will do favors for Brent Hassert. Should the Democrats do anything for Hassert they will be slighting Senator Wilhelmi and Representative McAsey. It will appear that Hassert is able to do things that the elected Democrats who represent Romeoville are not able to do. Allowing Hassert to look good, better than the elected officials from that district, will Make Senator Wilhel-

mi and Representative McAsey look like lame ducks unable to do what a defeated former Republican representative can accomplish. Sorry Brent. The truth is the truth and your argument that you can do great things for Romeoville as a defeated state representative are unconvincing at best. You are still liked however—even when truth must trump friendship.

“SexReally will not tell visitors how to think but it will give them something to think and talk about,” promises Stepp. “We consider this a sex site for the brain.” In addition to Stepp, the two other initial primary contributors to the site are twentysomethings who want to spark conversation among their peers: Kicesie Drew, a top 100 Internet celebrity whose videos on sex and related topics have been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube, and Danny Rouhier, a NYC-based

Despite the long ride, Senator Kotowski said he would not and could not miss the opportunity to speak highly of his esteemed colleague. Senator Wilhelmi has a unique ability for voting on the comedian. “I fit into the middle ground with no agenda and no message other than, ‘Hey everyone, here’s some information about sexuality if you’re looking for it.’” said Drew. “I just want to get people thinking about sex so they never jump into something they haven’t had time to understand and to prepare for.” Lawrence Swiader, Director of Digital Media at The National Campaign said, “There is really nothing like SexReally.com available for young adults. While it is impossible to mention everyone that attended it these issues fall into one of two camps: if the site is authoritative, it tends to be boring; if it’s engaging, it’s often uninformed. We hope that SexReally.com strikes the delicate balance between being a destination that 20-somethings will actually want to visit and being a source of credible information that people can trust.” Key Facts: • Half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. • Seven in ten pregnancies among single women in their

where for a truly unique learning experience.” Eight of the top ten spots in the senior division and seven of the top ten spots in the junior division went to teams from Singapore. The individual overall winner was Raffles Girls’ School student Zhang Mengshi, with a record 8,779 out of a possible 10,000 points. “The Scholar’s Cup has really evolved into a world-class competition,” said Valicia Saucedo, coach of the Daewon Foreign Language High School team from South Korea, which placed fifth in its division. “It’s not just about competing, it’s an opportunity for students to

grow and get to know a little more about the rest of the world.” After winning the senior division at last year’s World Finals in South Korea, teams from the United States failed to crack the top twenty in 2009. “This will force us to work harder to match up with other countries,” said Bunnie Hadsall, a competitor from Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona. Anirudh Sivaram, who helped to launch the program at the Modern School of Dubai and carried the flag of the United Arab Emirates at the tournament’s opening ceremonies, added, “On the plane

journey back home, the twelve of us were already strategizing as to how we could kick butt next year.” Program sponsors include the DemiDec Corporation, FunnelBrain LLC, and iRespond. The 2009 World Finals were hosted by Nanyang Girls’ High School, with support from the Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau, a division of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). In a statement issued at the conclusion of the tournament, the STB noted that “staging the World Scholar’s Cup has strengthened Singapore’s reputation as a global exchange

capital and enhances its value proposition as an intellectual hub. Drawing outstanding youths from around the world, it has raised our global profile and showcased our vibrancy as a host for youth-oriented international events, such as the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.” At the awards ceremony on Sunday evening, between winning medals for their achievements in different subjects and events, students cheered when Berdichevsky announced the curriculum theme for the upcoming competition season: A World Divided. “There’s a bit of irony to that,” admitted Berdichevsky,

“since a major goal of the program is to help bring the world together.” For more information on the World Scholar’s Cup, or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, visit www.scholarscup. org. With students in over 30 countries, the World Scholar’s Cup is the world’s leading allaround team academic competition. Teams learn a global curriculum spanning diverse subjects and skills, from science and art to writing and debate. They participate year-round in an online community and compete in person at regional and world tournaments.

Senator A.J. Wilhelmi Enjoys a Tremendous Turnout police, firemen and the trades, teamsters, service employees, all were present to support the man they count on to represent them. There were lawyers and businessmen, and newspapers represented. It would be difficult to name a group that did not come out to support Senator A.J Wilhelmi. Not so very long ago Senator Wilhelmi returned a telephone call from this newspaper at 9:45 in the evening, long after ordinary business hours, just to raise an important point to be considered in the drafting of new ethics legislation. The Senator astutely observed, “We must be careful so we don’t make the rules so strict that only the wealthy can run for office.”
