CLIMBERS FLOCK TO WALL FOR CLASSES Recreational climbing classes offer opportunities for youth to get involved with a lifelong sport.

Over the past decade, MAC’s youth Climbing Team has achieved enormous success at the National level. But you don’t have to compete to reap the benefits of MAC’s growing climbing program.

MAC’s elite team of instructors and coaches teach a wide variety of classes, starting with children as young as 4. Offerings include family climbing classes, a weekly climbing session for young adults, popular women’s climbing classes and more. There are also open climbing sessions.

“Recreational climbing classes are not just for members to learn climbing, they are a great workout both mentally and physically,” says Outdoor Manager Chad Failla. “If you are bored with a current workout and looking for something new, climbing is a perfect change of pace. Kids and adults learn to problem solve and have fun in an environment that is as much social as athletic.”

With the Climbing Gym’s recent expansion, members can choose between more traditional sport climbing, in which you are secured via

a rope, and bouldering, which involves short and powerful moves on a smaller wall with a thick mat below. Bouldering is a great way for those new to rock climbing to get involved. Members simply complete a short orientation that covers proper falling technique, rent a pair of shoes and get on the wall.

During the spring, the Tiny Tots class (see page 9) offers youth ages 4 and 5 the opportunity to get acquainted with climbing. In addition to teaching children about a new sport, the five-week class helps to build motor skills and instill self confidence.

Also among this spring’s offerings is the high school climbing and conditioning class. Participants get in a workout while learning basic and intermediate climbing techniques. It’s a fun class in a social atmosphere, and students are eligible to become belay approved.

ADULT EDUCATION

MAC Member Events offers educational classes to members and their non-member guests during the fall, winter and spring class sessions. The goal of MAC activity classes and workshops is the opportunity for members to explore creative arts, music and dance, personal development and game playing. These classes are a great opportunity for adults to learn a new skill, brush up on a forgotten one, or meet new people with similar interests. CREATIVE ARTS KNITTING AND CROCHETING

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH LEVEL III Students learn the basics of written and spoken Spanish using practical vocabulary, present- and past-tense verb conjugations, and gain confidence in everyday conversations. Students learn Latino cultural differences between native speakers and the academic language itself in a relaxed atmosphere. This class is instructed by Walter Osorio.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR iPHONE NEW CLASS

This class is designed to dramatize a subject through use of strong light and shadow, resulting in punched-up color and depth within any composition. Students use an array of painting surfaces, textures and fun tools of the trade. Beginners are welcome.

WINE & DESIGN: LADIES NIGHT OUT NEW CLASS In this social class with friendly, hands-on instruction, students learn ceramic painting techniques, color and design. All materials are provided, including a glass of wine and a ceramic bowl, mug, or plate to paint in class. The painted piece is glazed and available for pickup at MAC within a week. No previous experience is necessary. This class is instructed by Mimosa Studios.

INTRO TO SEWING KNITS NEW CLASS Students ages 14 and older learn about knit fabrics, how to sew ripple-free seams, hems and necklines, and to cut and sew a T-shirt. INTRODUCTION TO HAWAIIAN HUNA NEW CLASS Huna is the modern teaching of an ancient Hawaiian system brought forward through an unbroken lineage of 28 generations. In this theory-based class, participants learn about the spirit of aloha and how to create it in their lives through daily practices that nurture balance, compassion, purpose and empowerment in life. Huna does not compete with other belief systems but rather helps participants connect more fully to their own traditions. There is a 30-minute lunch break. This class is instructed by Kymm Nelsen.

4/16 SA 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. PD Room $90/$108 ME134 GENETICS AND DNA TESTING NEW CLASS Students explore the advances in genetics and DNA testing, and the possiblity of getting their own DNA tested. Topics include: how DNA controls human bodies, tracing family relationships, drug responses and health conditions. The class discusses the ethical issues of DNA testing, the source of stem cells, cloning, growing of body parts, and genetically modified babies and foods. This class is instructed by Garland Holt.

Meet the Instructor Sarah Moon – Social Media Jumpstart Sarah Moon is a digital communications professional who specializes in working with creative individuals and businesses on establishing and improving their online presence and digital-marketing strategies. She also writes about technology, digital media and creative business, and leads classes and workshops on e-commerce, digital and social media, blogging and website design. Moon began teaching digital communication classes through the Pacific Northwest College of Art’s continuing education program. During the spring term, she teaches Social Media Jumpstart on Tuesday evenings. See page 7 for more details on the class.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SECRETS: BEFORE YOU GO NEW CLASS

BEGINNING GUITAR

This class includes vital tips, tools and insights for traveling abroad, whether you have flights booked or are just dreaming. Students learn trip planning, travel documents, transport, travel health, language tricks, staying safe and other secrets that enable them to fully enjoy their international travels. This class is instructed by Shyla and Dan Bare, world travelers who have been to 70 countries.

USING THE ENNEAGRAM TO UNDERSTAND YOURSELF AND OTHERS NEW CLASS The ancient practice of the Enneagram, understanding the nine personality types, can give you a whole new viewpoint of yourself, your loved ones, and your colleagues. By understanding the deep patterns and tendencies we were born with, we can have insight into “why we do what we do,” have compassion for ourselves and others, and learn strategies to overcome habits/patterns getting in our way of living the life we long for. SECRETS TO USING TECHNOLOGY ABROAD NEW CLASS Stay connected when traveling abroad. AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE This course helps drivers ages 50 and older improve their skills and prevent traffic collisions. SOCIAL MEDIA JUMPSTART NEW EVENING OFFERING Getting started with social media can be overwhelming, but it can actually be a lot of fun. In this hands-on class for beginners, students explore popular social media services such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest and learn the lexicon and norms of each service. This class is instructed by Sarah Moon.

WINE 101: PALATE PRIMER Students explore the tactile building blocks of wine, including acid, tannin, sugar and alcohol, as well as the primary wine aroma/flavor categories. By sampling eight different wines, they learn how to identify and describe essential wine components.

They also learn how grape variety, growing conditions and winemaking shape a wine’s personality. This class is instructed by Wine & Spirit Archive.

MASTERS’ BRIDGE As students advance from novice to improving player, a deeper understanding of basic partnership agreements enables one to become a more effective player. In this class, students take a deeper look at several basic partnership understandings, from Simple and Forcing suit preference sequences, attacking with shapely hands, play improvements, defense techniques, lead suggestions and more. In each lesson, there are prepared hands that demonstrate the subject of the lesson with insights into the defensive and offensive thought processes involved. MY MAC PLAYSCHOOL SPRING BREAK CAMP (ages 2½ to 5) Children experience a world of exploration in My MAC Playschool Camp. These camps are a great way to continue children’s preschool learning throughout the spring break.

Camp includes activities such as arts and crafts, music, movement and group games that revolve around the books of Mo Willems, author of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Camps are taught by three My MAC Playschool staff from 9-11 a.m. with an optional lunch hour from 11 a.m.-noon for $6. BELAY CLASS (ages 14 and older) Members learn to belay in one evening to become belay approved to use MAC’s Climbing Gym. This class teaches members about equipment, safety rules and wall orientation while also preparing them to belay a climber on top-rope and pass OAP’s belay test. This is a drop-in class for members ages 14 and older.

BELAY SERVICE (ages 4 and older) These sessions are for those who want to try climbing but don’t have a partner to climb with. Climbing instructors provide belay service to junior and adult members at designated times during the week. This is a drop-in session; there is no registration.

The cost is $10 per person for the duration of the time specified. For those current on their Climbing Gym fees, the service is $5. There is an extra fee for shoes and chalk if needed.

CLIMBING TEAM DEVELOPMENT (ages 8 and older) This class teaches the skills necessary to be a part of the climbing team and prepare for competition. It is used as a springboard to join MAC’s competitive climbing team.

Most team members started in the development program, and the coaching staff finds this program is an invaluable tool. Coaches recommend that juniors participate in one session of the Development Class or Development Summer Camp before trying out for the MAC climbing team. Meet the Instructor Joe Osterman - Climbing Joe Osterman is lead climbing instructor and attendant in MAC’s Climbing Gym. Osterman has been at MAC for the past year after moving from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began climbing in college, and went on to work at the university’s climbing gym while also guiding outdoor trips. Osterman is an American Mountain Guides Association–certified, single-pitch instructor, a USA Climbing-certified level 1 route setter, and a wilderness first responder. He teaches everything from Tiny Tots to Women Who Rock climbing classes, and can be found in MAC’s Climbing Gym nearly every day. When he’s not climbing, you can find him skiing, mountain biking, surfing and camping.

Meet the Instructor Erin Zintek - Dance A Midwest native, Erin Zintek earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, where she was chosen to dance with the university’s Dancers In Company, traveling around the Midwest. Pre-professionally and professionally, Erin has danced with Charlotte Adams and Dancers, David Dorfman and Dancers, Poetic Rebound Co., and Bill Young. During the summer of 2008, she traveled to Brazil to study capoeira and dance with the company Bale Folclorico. Erin is the assistant coach for the MAC Company, and specializes in contemporary/modern movement. She choreographs for MAC and studios around Portland. She is certified in Pilates mat and reformer, and yoga, and teaches Evolution and Contemporary Dance Fitness.

BEGINNER KARATE (ages 7 and older) Classes expand on the basic movements of punching, kicking, blocking and kata (forms). Kumite (sparring) is introduced, and class duration is increased to one hour.

MY MAC PLAYSCHOOL

My MAC Playschool offers a safe, high quality program for MAC’s youngest members.

The play-based curriculum helps children achieve developmentally appropriate goals while having fun in a small group setting. Daily activities focus on each child’s cognitive, physical, and social development. Children participate in story time, arts and crafts, snack, 30 minutes of active play and an occasional field trip.

Meet the Instructor Topher Davis - SAQ, After-School Basketball New Youth Programs/Court Sports attendant and instructor Topher Davis started playing Ultimate Frisbee at the University of Oregon in 2008, and played for five years, making four appearances at College Nationals. The team was three-time Northwest Regional Champion, and Davis was captain for two years, leading the team to a thirdplace finish at nationals both years. After graduating, Davis played on the USA U23 Mixed Team that won Gold at the 2013 U23 World Games. Now living in Portland, Davis is in his third year playing for the professional ultimate team, the Portland Stags.

He teaches after-school basketball classes and speed/agility/quickness class.

GENERAL INFORMATION JUNIOR RULES • Junior members are required to conduct themselves in a courteous and respectful manner while using the club facilities. If any rule is violated, a junior’s membership privileges may be suspended.

• During the school year, juniors ages 11 to 13 are allowed in the clubhouse without an accompanying adult from 2-9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from opening to closing on weekends and legal holidays. During the summer break, they are allowed in the clubhouse without an accompanying adult from opening to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from opening to closing on weekends and legal holidays.

• Juniors 14 and older are allowed in the clubhouse without an accompanying adult from opening to closing throughout the year.

• Junior members must check in when entering the club at the Athletic Entrance, Front Desk or Fourth Floor Entrance. Juniors ages 7 to 10 must provide their name and/or membership number. Members ages 11 to 17 must scan their current photo membership card or enter their membership number into the keypad.

• Juniors are encouraged to enter the club by the Athletic Entrance.

Juniors may not congregate in the Main Lobby while waiting to be picked up.

• In the past, juniors have not been allowed to host guests. The club is currently undertaking a Junior Guest Pass Pilot Program to explore the feasibility of allowing juniors to host guests in limited circumstances, The program has specific rules and policies. • The Junior Lounge and E&C Gallery are available for use by juniors during junior hours.

• Proper attire is required in the social areas of the club including the Main Entrance, lobbies and first-floor restaurants. See Club Rules or Dress Code brochure for details.

• Basement-level senior locker rooms, saunas, steam room and whirlpool are off limits to juniors except on Family Days when accompanied by an adult member.

FACILITIES HOURS AND RULES • Dress shoes or marking-soled shoes are prohibited on courts, gymnasium, and in all studios.

• Handball: Juniors may use handball courts 1-6, except during prime time or when in use by senior or intermediate members.

Juniors must vacate the court if senior or intermediate members wish to use the court. Junior members are expected to adhere to all court rules and regulations. Reserve courts online or by calling 503-517-7599.

• Squash: Juniors ages 13 and younger may use squash courts 1-6, however during prime time, 5-5:45 p.m., there are limits on courts 1 and 2: Juniors must play with an adult (not solely another junior) and they cannot play solo. Monday through Thursday, they may make no more than two reservations per week for courts 1 and 2. If lessons are not taking place on Court 1 or Court 6 after the Junior Clinic, these courts will be released. Reserve courts online or by calling 503-517-7584.

• Racquetball: Juniors may use racquetball courts 5-10, except during prime time hours (5:30-7:30 p.m.) or when in use by senior or intermediate members. Juniors must vacate the court if senior or intermediate members wish to use the court. Junior members are expected to adhere to all court rules and regulations. Reserve courts online or by calling 503-517-7599.

• Tennis: Juniors are allowed to reserve one pre-reserved court per week, but may play on as many day-of-play courts as are available.

Juniors are not allowed to reserve tennis courts during adult prime times: 9:30 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. Tennis court attire: No cutoffs, swim suits, jeans or exercise outfits. Shirts must be worn. All tennis court reservations must be made or cancelled by calling the reservation line at 503-517-7590.

• Adult weight rooms: Juniors must be age 14 or older to use the adult weight rooms.

• Junior Weight Room: Juniors ages 7 to 13 may use the room Monday through Wednesday from 3:30-7 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 3:30-6 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For holiday hours, contact Classes/Camps Supervisor Mike Donovan at 503-517-7578 or MDonovan@theMAC.com.

SUMMER CAMP FORMAT Build a day of camps your child wants! The format features morning, midday and afternoon blocks, with a lunch and snack break. Having three blocks provides a full day of fun that starts at 9 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Campers ages 7 and older may be released to the Junior Lounge, where an attendant is present, until 5:30 p.m. The program blocks consist of the MORNING BLOCK from 9-11 a.m., MIDDAY BLOCK from 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. and AFTERNOON BLOCK from 2-4 p.m. Lunch options are available each day.
