Featuring Tyree Woodham Hello readers of The Woodpecker. My name is Tyree Woodham and I am the Head distributor of The Woodpecker. I have been happily married for nearly 22 years and have 3 children, 20, 16 and 13 and yes, they are your typical teenagers except the eldest who has just purchased her first house with her partner. I have lived in Woodend for 24 years and been heavily involved with Playcentre, Plunket of which some of you will remember our wonderful garage sales, and Woodend School. I started delivering The Woodpecker approximately 19 years ago and was originally just a delivery person. I had been delivering for about 18 months when the then Head distributor became ill and it was offered to me. I said I would do it while she was unwell and then she could take it back but unfortunately that never happened, so it was then up to me. I had the names of all the distributors and made contact by dropping off their Woodpeckers each month. It was also not long after that that a committee was formed, and I was drafted on to
that where I am the longest standing original member there today. There is only one other distributor who has been delivering longer than me and he is still with us today. I’m sure you will get a wee read from him sometime too. I have seen many people come and go, changes to The Woodpecker and seen it grow to where it is now. I am also still doing my original run to this day. We are all volunteers who deliver and range in age from approx 80ish to 40ish. It’s a great wee informative paper and I hope to see it around in the next 20 years and I’m sure it will be different again. Women’s Institute Pegasus Woodend Women’s Institute had an enjoyable meeting with many members trying out indoor bowls and participating in the completions. This month our demonstration is chocolate making. Handcraft is a Decorated photo frame, Baking A Favourite NZ dip. Floral, is a floating flower. Woodend Friendship Club Our outing was a little different this month as we took our own lunches to eat under very pleasant circumstances after we had watched the Gypsy Vanners in Whiterock. This is a stud of very beautiful horses that originated with the Gypsy people in England and Ireland who bred them for their strength and gentleness. On this very hot day we were able to watch 3 of the mares in a huge, rectangular indoor arena, one had her foal with her, while they did various acts such as kicking a huge ball. The owner, Lynda, told us their history and pointed out their special features. They have very long manes, fore-locks and tails that, most of the time, are kept plaited as they tend to chew them. They also have an abundance of feather i.e. hair on their legs. Later we saw 3 more mares with their foals and the stallion, Lion Prince, that Lynda had imported from the America, along with some mares and has been breeding and selling some of their offspring. We were shown the outside of the beautifully kept family villa and given some of its history. In a very large shed, nearby, were well-kept old cars e.g. a Cadillac and an Oldsmobile. Walking through this shed we came across a racing saloon being built for their son and two car transporters which not only could carry cars etc., but, had substantial living space. A thoroughly interesting day full of surprises. It was our AGM last month with the election of officers going smoothly. Doug. Tatterson is our new president and Cheryl Judson our vice-president. We were then well entertained by the Irish band from the Bog tavern. It consists of five older men, two guitars, a base guitar, a Page 4 THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2019
mandolin and one with the Irish pipes or a whistle. We clapped and tapped our feet with songs such as ‘Peggy O’, ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ and ‘Dirty Old Town’. The correct name for the pipes is Uilleann pipes and is played with bellows under one arm, a bag under the other and fingers playing a fine reed that spans 2 octaves. A wonderful rousing hour that took our minds off the terrible time ChCh was going through.

MAYOR DAVID AYERS - Celebrating Neighbours’ Day I am writing this during the week that has been designated for celebrating Neighbours Day. After the senseless and hateful killings in Christchurch, there has to be a bitter irony about this, but we can also see it as an opportunity for reflection on the kind of community we should want to be. In this column, I usually try to give a local slant that reflects the circulation area of the Woodpecker. Given that the attacks on the mosques were of regional, national and international significance, that local slant is not too obvious. Nevertheless, there is something that I think that we can take from what happened. What has become apparent over recent days is that some members of our community feel vulnerable if they look as if they could be immigrants, and this is not only those who are clearly Muslim. What we all can do is to be aware of that sense of vulnerability and watch out for our neighbours. In conducting citizenship ceremonies every 7 or 8 weeks, it seems that your area has a more marked immigrant presence than most other parts of our Waimakariri District, a District that has experienced a marked diversification in our ethnic and linguistic mix over recent times. Because it is a new town, the immigrant contribution to the building of the Pegasus community in particular has been a more significant factor than elsewhere. I hope the Pegasus community will encourage that contribution. At citizenship ceremonies, we show a video that features the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon Tracey Martin. Contained within their welcoming messages, and mine when I speak, is an encouragement for our new citizens to share their cultures with the rest of us. When that happens, our community Page 6 THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2019
is enriched. It is also enriched when there is dialogue between Christians and Muslims, and amongst our many faiths. Whether our ancestors came on canoes in the thirteenth century or on sailing ships in the nineteenth, or we arrived on Boeing 777s last year, they and we all came looking for a better life. In the words of our Prime Minister, our neighbours who are immigrants “have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home,” and, I would add, their neighbourhood.

PRGI – Pegasus Info Page – April 2019 PRGI FACEBOOK PRGI have recently set up a new Facebook Page; Pegasus Residents’ Group Inc. This page is to enable us to share information with our community. Not surprisingly, many people confuse our page with the ‘Pegasus Residents’ page, which is a closed group, run by 3 Pegasus residents. While that page is used by PRGI to post info at times, we have no control or influence over what appears on that page. PRGI COMMITTEE – AGM TIME Our AGM is coming up on 21 May commencing at 7pm in the Pegasus Bay School Hall. Guest speakers this year are Mike Kwant from WDC talking about the Northern Pegasus Bay Bylaw implementation and Greg Byrnes talking about the Tuhaitara Coastal Park (including an update on the Pegasus wetlands and western ridge). All positions of office will be up for renewal and we invite enquiries from anyone who may be interested and want to know more. Nomination forms can be found on our website and must be received no later than 7 May 2019. We are particularly keen to hear from people who may be able to help with admin type tasks, including someone with good computer knowledge and someone with good communication skills combined with a good knowledge of Pegasus. Radio Yachting Championship Report Photos from Pegasus Radio Sailing Club Variable light winds and warm weather welcomed 35 skippers from Kerikeri to Dunedin and Australia to Lake Pegasus from 22 to 24 March.
They competed in the South Island Championship for International One Metre yachts. Waimakariri District Mayor David Ayres commended Pegasus Radio Sailing Club and duly opened the regatta. Race Officer Terry Valder ran two mixed heats for each of eight qualifying races through Saturday. The results were used to rank the skippers into the Gold and Silver Finals for another eight races on Sunday. Current Australian Champion Sean Wallis pipped the NZ Champion Ian Vickers in the last race. Local Christchurch skipper Chris Koskela took honours in the Silver Fleet. Pegasus Radio Sailing Club stands proud to have had 10 members enter the regatta and another 30 members and local volunteers running a highly successful regatta. Page 10 THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2019

Woodend Garden Club Trip to Hanmer
In lieu of a meeting in March, the Club had a fabulous day out in the Hurunui. The weather was perfect, and spirits were high! Members boarded a chartered bus outside the Community Hall and travelled to Rotherham. The first stop was morning tea and a private garden viewing at the beautiful Loch Leven property. The owners have been working on the property for nearly 30 years. Although it shows more colour in Spring and early Summer, there was still plenty to inspire. The garden featured many repeat plantings and immaculately trimmed hedges and feature bushes. Loch Leven is also a successful nursery and so plenty of pots and ‘must have’ items were loaded into the luggage space on the bus! We enjoyed a lovely morning tea with corn and cheese rolls and of course - creamed

piklets. The next stop was Hanmer where the leaves are just starting to turn. Some members enjoyed the hot pools, others lunched, and some perused the shops. The town was quite peaceful on a Monday without the usual weekend visitors. The ride back to Woodend was a quiet one with a few catching up on some needed rest. The next meeting is Monday 15 April at the Woodend Community Centre at 1.30pm. A member of the North Canterbury Floral Art Group will be hosting an interesting session. Please come along and join us if you are free and stay for a cuppa. The Home Science competition for that meeting is the best three ANZAC biscuits. Chris Delury Builders We have lived in Pegasus coming up seven years and couldn’t envision living anywhere outside of the Waimak. Having lived and worked in Wellington for several years, we really appreciate the laid back and friendly attitude of the locals who live here and take the time to get to know you. We feel a really strong sense of community here and love that our kids are playing outdoors with the neighbourhood children and experience a childhood like our own. With over 20 years of building and project management experience under Chris’ belt we take on a variety of jobs from new decks through to new house builds. We feel it’s a real privilege to be able to support local business and get to know the people behind the name. We look forward to seeing our community grow and feel honoured to be a part of it. Awareness Week 2019 - Discover your rights! “Discovering your rights just became a whole lot easier with the launch of the new CAB website www.cab.org.nz”, says Margaret Finnie of Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury. “Our new website gives you even easier access to the huge amount of information that the CAB has available about people’s rights. It’s an online resource that complements our face-toface and phone service.” The CAB is launching the new website as part of its Awareness Week, which runs from 8-14 April, and the theme of the week is ‘Discover your rights -Tūhuratia ō motika’. “It’s an invitation for people to come and check out our new website and see what the CAB has to offer” Margaret Finnie says. “Every day we help people to be aware of their rights and how to act on them, but we know there are many more who are struggling with situations without knowing what their rights are. We want people to know we are here to help” Margaret explains. Margaret says that the CAB sees many situations where basic rights just aren’t being met. “For example, many of the people who come to us with employment issues don’t have a signed employment agreement. They don’t know that it’s a legal requirement for an employer to provide their employee with a written agreement, and that Page 16 THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2019
an employer can be fined $10,000 for not providing one.” Information about rights should be readily accessible to everyone and making this happen is core to what the CAB is about. “Anyone can come to us for help with anything - we help everyone”, says Margaret “Our aim is to inform and empower you with information about your rights and options.” Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is located at the Trevor Inch Memorial Library 141 Percival Street, Rangiora. Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade Open Day Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade recently held an open day which was well attended with an estimated 2000 plus people going through the station doors. The public had an opportunity to participate in a great day of fire safety-related activities. The open day was a great opportunity for the community to come and see some of the services that are provided to the community and what happens behind the scenes of a fire station. There was opportunity to see around the
Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade prides itself on its commitment to the public safety of its community it serves. The Brigade has developed and maintained over 58 years of meaningful relationships with its stakeholders at both local and regional level. The experienced team continues this tradition by serving its community not only by responding to emergency events but also by ongoing fire safety education programs along with risk management strategies. The brigade is made entirely of dedicated volunteers, currently with an establishment of 27 operational firefighters and 5 operational support staff, who are on call and ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice 24/7.

Woodend School News Over the past week we have been working on ways to support those families affected in the Christchurch tragedy. All students sent messages of aroha and support which were taken into town by teachers and the Head Students during the week. On Friday the school held a Mufti day ‘Colour My Day’ where donations will be sent to the Mayoralty Fund to distribute to families affected. We have been successful in our application to CERT for continuing our targeted reading programme. This targeted reading programme works with our at-risk Year 1s who have not yet developed the necessary reading skills.
We are gaining great benefit in terms of student progress, self esteem and achievement. We are very grateful to the Woodend Tavern for enabling us to apply to CERT for this grant. Thank you both. We also want to thank the Woodend Lions Club who recently donated $250 towards our missing school bell. We are in the process of locating a suitable replacement. This now means we will be able to continue with our long-held traditions of End of Year Assemblies where staff, students and families who are leaving ‘ring the bell’. This is very much appreciated. This month has been very busy with student activities. All students participated in a Financial Literacy programme last week gaining skills to help them in life with all things money! We have had some students compete at the Pegasus swimming sports with Millie Bell and Lily Spark going on to represent Woodend School at the Canterbury swimming sports to be held later in the month. Next week students will be participating in the Primary Schools Duathlon and also our juniors will be participating in their Junior Cross Country. Woodend School is again fundraising with the Entertainment Book 2019/2020. We are fundraising for sports equipment for all students in the school. Woodend-Sefton Community Board March meeting update A great month for funding applications with three groups granted funding for events: The Charity Fun Mud Run organised by the Lions Club of Pegasus Town received $500 toward running this new event. It will be held in the Te KĹ?haka o TĹŤhaitara Trust wetlands on 14 April. Hope to see you there. Kaiapoi Art Expo which is in July received $500 for advertising and entertainment. Local artists are regular contributors to the Expo which was a big reason for supporting this event. Sefton Community Group received $400 for running the ANZAC service in the Sefton Domain on 24 April at 6pm. This is a very special and moving service for locals and visitors. The Board also held a workshop to refine a possible list of road names for new roads in the area. Consultations - The Board had a busy month holding workshops to prepare their feedback to a number of Council consultations including the draft Annual Plan and the Rural Residential Development Strategy along with attending public drop-in sessions on these. The Board also held a drop-in session at Waikuku Beach so that residents could give their feedback on the proposed welcome sign which the Board are funding. Council staff were also on hand to answer questions about drainage and the water supply. Woodend Community Association What does it mean to join the WCA?? It seems there is a misconception in our community as to what it means to join the Woodend Community Association. As a member, you are simply providing a small financial contribution of $10 per household towards the administration costs of running the Woodend Community Association. There is absolutely no commitment expected from you to give up your time to the WCA. Be being a member, you are provided with information regarding the community and you have the ability to vote at our AGM’s if this is what you want to do. The WCA is run by a group of volunteers in the community who do give up their time to try and make Woodend a better and safer place to live in. We can’t do this without the support of our community. We are asking for you to please join the WCA and show your support for the people who are working tirelessly on your behalf. Road Safety – Woodend Corridor Safety Improvements Project (NZTA) We were advised by the NZTA back in February that the Safe Roads Project Team had met with the Waimakariri District Council to discuss the developing list of solutions for the safety issues identified through the data gathering conducted by the NZTA last year. It was advised the community would receive the information by the 11 March. Disappointingly, the date was missed, so we are continuing to push the NZTA to confirm when we can expect to receive the information. As you all know, it is a high priority for the residents of Woodend to have our safety issues addressed for SH1. WCA Project Update Woodend Beach Area Project – As mentioned in the February edition, the draft concept plan for the Woodend Beach Area Project has now been approved to proceed by the Tuhaitara Trust and the WCA. Confirmation of this has been provided to the Waimakariri District Council. The WCA will be writing a submission to the WDC’s Annual Plan for 2019-2020 to bring forward planned renovations of the toilets and playground to be in line with the project timeframe. We will update you when we have more information. Gladstone Road Cycle Path As per the information notice provided to members early March, design of the new off-road cycle path along Gladstone Road is now complete. The proposed new off-road cycle path is part of an overall project of the WDC’s to improve links between Woodend and Pegasus, and to provide safe pedestrian links to Gladstone Park from Woodend. It is great to see this project now in progress. Waimakariri District Council – Annual Plan Consultation The Waimakariri District Council have now released their draft Annual Plan 2019-2020 for consultation. You can find this at https://www.waimakariri.govt.nz/have-a-say/lets-talk/consultations/about-draft-annualplan-2019-2020. The WCA will be providing a submission on this as we do every year. If you would like to provide your feedback on this through the WCA please feel free to email us your comments. News and Update from The Tuhaitara Coastal Park
volunteering with the team at Tūhaitara Costal park.
The team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park have a few updates to share with our community. Firstly-we have confirmed that 1,000 native trees will be planted on Kaitiritiri Ridge in Pegasus on the 27th of September for Ngāi Tahu Settlement Day. This is a great opportunity to be involved with restoration work in your community so plan on attending if you can. Last year’s planting here was a huge success and we expect the same this year. Secondly- we have had many questions about the continuation of forestry work that is due to occur over winter. There will be another block of Pinus radiata harvested north of Pegasus and we will share details about this when we are provided with that information. Our Facebook page- Friends of Tuhaitara Coastal Park is a great place to check for updates about this and other important things happening around the park. Lastly- as we have written in the past- we have had an ongoing issue with people not picking up dog poo in the park. We have restoration areas visited by school groups and they have repeatedly found dog poo in the areas they are working to restore. Please be respectful of other park visitors and dispose of your dog’s waste appropriately. Thank you to those of you who already make an effort to always do so. To conclude on a positive note- we now have 31 Biota Node sites (restoration areas) the two newest sites have now been planted with native wetland species. The next Hi 10 is Sunday 14 April. Rangiora Methodist Church Opening Hours – From now on Rev Veitomoni will be in attendance at the church from 9am to 5pm on weekdays from Tuesday to Friday. He is available to provide prayer, support and a welcome for anyone with any needs, or who wants to drop in for a chat. The church can be a place of sanctuary and quiet for people in their busy worlds. This includes anyone in the community so spread the word that Trinity has an Open Door. CHURCH NOTICES St Barnabas Like you, we were shocked and horrified by the cruel and cowardly shootings at the Christchurch mosques on Friday 15 March. On the following day St Barnabas was open from 10am to 4pm, and many of our congregation attended during that time to pray for the victims of the shootings and their families. Some of us have also able to help in other, physical ways; we will continue to both pray for them and to look out for other ways to show our love in the wake of this tragedy. We have ten or more youngsters hoping to attend Easter Camp this year, which is a great number. We know they will have a wonderful time, learning to know more about God and his love for us, as well as getting to know one another better. At Children’s Church, the young people are still studying Jesus’ life, from his birth to his death – and beyond. These sessions run at the same time as the 4.32 service and cater for youngsters from 0 to 14. Those of 12 and up can also join the Tribe youth group – their next meeting is on 14 April.
The numbers of caregivers and children attending Mainly Music has been a bit on the low side these last few weeks, presumably due to the measles outbreak. We fully understand that the health of the little ones must be the first priority and we look forward to seeing you back when the outbreak is over. Our Ash Wednesday service was calm and thought-provoking for those of us who attended. And the Lenten study is proving well worthwhile. Taking the form of a discussion group, we are working through the booklet ‘Holy Spirit; Through Lent With 1 Corinthians’. As each week is a separate theme, you can still join us if you are interested; please contact Ross or Gwyn Fraser on 310 6123, so they can order you a booklet and give you the address to go to.
