The Woodpecker - November 2024

Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

And here we are all of a sudden on 1 November! How fast the year has gone and how great it is to enjoy the longer days and some warmer ones also!

This month we’ve had a return from some previous advertisers and received a number of new advertisers, some of which are new or newish to the area. It’s so great to have The Woodpecker as a medium for them to promote and advertise what they do as well as welcoming new people and businesses to our area.

amazing what can easily be missed!

We’ve also had a couple of new community groups want to promote themselves.

Every month as I work my way through the very large number of emails for advertising or community news and then put it in the InDesign template, it always amazes me how it all comes together. Even although the process each month is the same, the result is different every month. It’s quite a satisfying, albeit time-consuming job, but nonetheless fulfilling and enjoyable.

Part of the job I have to do is to read through every article to make sure there are no grammatical errors or typos, even the adverts too; it’s

However, this month, I have a challenge for you. This will determine whether or not you read the Editor’s note each month and how well you read The Woodpecker, but there is a typo on a pdf file which is in the publication. It wasn’t possible to change the file due to time constraints so I thought it would be fun to put the challenge out there as well as drawing attention to the particular community group. I’ll shout a coffee to the first person that emails me with what the typo is and where it is. You can look on it as the adult’s version of finding Mr Woody Woodpecker!

Another reminder we have our Xmas Thank You evening for all our lovely volunteers, community contributors and advertisers. The invitation is on the page 52. Don’t forget to RSVP, we’d love to see you there and thank you for your support.

Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus

Lions are ordinary people from all walks of life who enjoy getting together and doing good things. We are kind and generous people who want to help. That’s why we work on projects to improve our communities and protect the environment. We get enormous satisfaction from the knowledge that what we do DOES make a difference. And we enjoy friendship and fun while doing so. Whenever Lions Club members get together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. Because we help where help is needed – in our communities and worldwide – with unmatched integrity and energy. Lions

Clubs New Zealand is part of a global organisation with 1.4 million members in 208 countries and geographic regions. With this much manpower, it’s no wonder that Lions Club members can achieve extraordinary things, every day.

It gives the greatest pleasure to say a sincere thank you to one of The Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus longstanding members Ian Lennie. Ian Joined Lions in 2005 in Ashburton and moved to The Lions Club of Woodend

in 2014, Ian has served in most if not all of the roles in The Lions Club of Woodend and Then the Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus. It’s thanks largely to Ian that we have the War Memorial in Woodend and the very emotional and well-attended Eve of ANZAC Day Service each year, Toot for Tucker for the last 6 years, and this year Ian was the main driving force in getting the funding for the Woodend Playcentre fence replacement. On 10 October Ian was recognised at the WDC Community Awards, Ian has given his time generously to

a number of organisations in the Woodend and Pegasus communities Remember the Lions moto is We Serve and we are here to serve all of our community, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Pegasus, Ravenswood, and Waikuku If you would like to make a difference

DROP-IN SESSIONS: Saturday 02 & 16 November, 10:30am – 11.30am.

On Saturday, 19 October, Pegasus parkrun marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 400th event. The community came together in an extraordinary show of support, with a record-breaking 716 participants running, jogging, and walking the scenic 5K course around Lake Pegasus. This event not only shattered previous attendance records but also highlighted the spirit and camaraderie that parkrun fosters among a wide cross-section of the community. We had an ambitious goal of attracting over 400 participants to commemorate our 400th run. We are proud and humbled to say that our

community responded enthusiastically, more than doubling the target and creating an electric atmosphere from the early hours of the morning. It was truly a family-friendly affair, with local businesses generously donating spot prizes and providing entertainment. Children enjoyed face painting and a bouncy castle, while adults mingled and prepared for the run. The event also featured field games and a marquee from The Athlete’s Foot and Brooks, ensuring there was something for everyone.

The sense of community was palpable as everyone gathered in the start / finish area. At 8am, the walkers,

joggers, and runners tackled the 5K loop course, which involved two laps around Lake Pegasus. And they just kept coming over the start line! The results of the 400th Pegasus parkrun were impressive. A total of 716 people participated, including 260 first timers and 68 individuals who recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives from 23 different clubs took part, showcasing the diverse and inclusive nature of the event. The success of the day was made possible by the dedication of 34 volunteers, whose efforts ensured everything ran smoothly.

One of the highlights of the event was the spot prize draw, which took place at around 9:15am after the tail walker finished. With over 100 prizes up for grabs, there was plenty of excitement and anticipation. A coffee cart and sausage sizzle, in aid of the Waikuku Surf Club, provided much-needed sustenance. The Sunshine Café baked a large cake to celebrate the occasion, offering slices to all parkrunners. This gesture added a sweet touch to the morning’s festivities and further

emphasised the community spirit of the event.

This event was supported by several businesses and other organisations across our local community. It was fantastic to see everyone pull together to celebrate this milestone and popularise the fact that there is a free, timed, 5K walk, jog, and run right on their doorstep in Pegasus Town. Thank you to EVERYONE who made this a success. We appreciate all your support!

Check out our Facebook page for photos and videos (search for ‘Pegasus parkrun’) from the day. If you’d like to know more about parkrun, you can also visit parkrun.co.nz/pegasus for more info.

On Saturday, 5 October, Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual Honours’ Night at the RSA

in Rangiora. (We would like to acknowledge and thank Rangiora and Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigades’ for standing in for us, in case we had any calls to attend in our District).

It’s always a special night for the Brigade, where we get a chance to acknowledge Members for their Service.

Brigade and she was voted in as a Life Honorary Member of our Brigade. After joining and serving our Brigade for 3 years, Firefighters are awarded a Certificate. After five years, a silver medal is presented and every two years after that, a silver bar is added. Once 25 years is reached, a member is eligible for a gold star and again a gold bar is added every two years after that, with finally a double gold star for 50 years.

Members receiving a silver bar this year were as follows: Anthony Ross – 7 years, Richard Davies – 9 years, Phil Lamont – 11 years, Laura Jory – 15 years, Mark Handley – 17 years, Steve Mann – 17 years, Mark Sutherland

One of the biggest awards within Fire and Emergency New Zealand, is a Kings Service Medal for long meritorious service which is awarded after 14 years, and this year, we were able to present this to Mike Murphy. After completing 21 years, a clasp is added to this medal and this year, that was awarded to both Sandra Grant and Paul Chinnery.

Another to be specially honoured was Laura Jory for 15 years’ service to the

– 19 years, Paul Chinnery – 21 years, Sandra Grant – 21 years, Shayne Robinson –23 years. And finally, a gold bar to Lew Grant

for 47 years (a massive achievement). We would like to congratulate everyone for their awards this year but also acknowledge the whole of the Brigade for the work / calls you have attended this year (now standing at over 190 at the 6 October).

Woodend Indoor Bowls

It seems as if time has been spirited away this year. We have played against each other and neighbouring clubs, found all our champions for this season, and had some fun along the way. A few dedicated players have been involved in various competitions, run by our neighbouring clubs and doing very well with their efforts. We have also brought ourselves into the age of Facebook, where you can now read our monthly newsletter put together by our club president Andrew and his wife Lyn, who works behind the scenes to put it altogether. We have held our AGM, and our presidents report was well received by Club members. Andrew also presented the silver ware and presented some well-deserved certificates to a few that work endlessly within the club - a great idea. See our Facebook page for photos.

On a more solemn note, as a club we have lost a true patron of the game with the passing of life member Helen Power. Many have memories of her welcoming nature to all who came along to play this seemingly simple game. There are others I know that will be missing her, as friend, colleague, leader and playing partner. The fragility of life is ever present in clubs with senior players that are still making contributions to the game

week after week. There are still a lot of senior members at the forefront of committees, match officials, umpires and general helpers that keep our beloved game of Indoor Bowls running smoothly. Thank you all. Just a reminder that our Christmas Bowls evening is happening on Monday 2 December 2024, and next year in February the club will again run our “Have a go night,” before we roll into another season. We will post this on our Facebook page reminding everybody that this is a game worth “Giving it a go!”

Woodend - Sefton Community Board

Surf Lifesaving Patrols

The Board has been successful in getting the dates for the paid surf lifesaving patrols at Woodend and Pegasus Beaches to start slightly later and finish later in January. The Council has agreed to funding and are working with Surf Lifesaving NZ to confirm the dates. There will be around 30 days at each beach over the summer Last summer the surf patrols at the two beaches ran from 18 December and finished on 12 January.

Waikuku Beach will have 39 days of paid patrols plus weekend patrols by the volunteers over an extended period. The dates will be publicised once they are confirmed. A good result for the communities and the district.

Woodend Bypass

The Woodend Bypass and SH1 Belfast to Pegasus Motorway has been prioritised as one of the Roads of National Significance and will help reduce congestion, improve safety and travel times, and allow easier access and community connection in Woodend. You can sign up to receive email project updates from NZTA at https://www.nzta.govt.nz/b2p with the first one hopefully due out soon. The Board has been advocating for the Bypass for many years and will continue to advocate for the best outcomes for the community.

Working toward a new bus stop in Ravenswood

The Board has long been requesting Environment Canterbury to allow a short deviation from the 95 and 97 bus route into Ravenswood from SH1 and turn around at the roundabout by New World. We are a step closer as Council have been working with ECan but there is still more work to be done with ECan and NZTA, so fingers crossed. In the short term this would allow people to use a bus to access the Ravenswood commercial area safely as crossing at the Pegasus/Ravenswood roundabout is seen by many as unsafe.

Woodend Primary School Update

Welcome to Term 4! A big welcome to all the new students and families joining us for the final term of the year. It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting time, and we’re thrilled to have you with us.

Woodend School Fair

This year’s school fair was a tremendous success, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our community. The perfect weather and record-breaking turnout created a day filled with fun, laughter, and unity.

Thanks to the generosity of parents, local businesses, teachers, and students, we raised an impressive amount for our playground fund. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the day. Your dedication and hard work made the fair such a hit. We’re proud to be part of such a supportive and enthusiastic community.

Canterbury / Westland Science Fair

We are excited to celebrate the achievements of Eli, Keava, and Georgia, who attended the Canterbury / Westland Science Fair in September after excelling in the Woodend School Science Fair earlier in the term. Special congratulations to Eli and Harley for placing 2nd in the Chemistry category for their project on Gummy Bears!

Koru Games 2024

At the end of last term, 56 of our senior students represented Woodend School in the 2024 Koru Games, held over three days in the Selwyn District. The students competed in Dodgeball, Basketball, Netball, Football, and Table Tennis, demonstrating incredible skill and sportsmanship.

Girls’ Dodgeball team: 3rd place; Girls’ Basketball team: 4th place; Boys’ Basketball team: 5th place.

Our students performed admirably and supported each other throughout the

games. We are immensely proud of their efforts and representation of our school! A massive thank you to all the parents who helped coach and manage our teams and Mrs Neylon.

North Canterbury Kapa Haka Festival

On Thursday, 19 September, both our junior and senior Kapa Haka groups performed at the North Canterbury Kapa Haka Festival. Their mana, teamwork, and confidence shone brightly on stage. Thank you to the parents who supported the event, and a special thanks to Makai for preparing our students to be stage ready. We are incredibly proud of their efforts.

Pegasus Park Run

Woodend School

had a fantastic turnout at the Pegasus Park Run 400, with 716 attendees enjoying this community event. It was a wonderful day, and we are so proud of everyone who

participated. Well done, team Woodend!

Calling all 4-year-olds - Enrol now for 2025

It’s that time of year again when we start planning for the upcoming school year! With our growing community and new subdivisions, we’re excited to welcome new faces to our school whanau. If your child is 4 or turns 4 this year and will be starting school anytime in 2025, now is the time to get them

enrolled. Early enrolment helps us ensure we have the right resources and support in place for all our students. Please go to our school website, click the enrolment tab, and fill out the online form.

We can’t wait to meet our future students!

Cohort Entry for 2025

From the start of the 2025 school year, we have adopted a “Cohort Entry” process for all of our new entrant students. Starting 2025 new entrants will join the school at the next cohort entry date after they turn 5. There will be two cohort entry points per school

term in Week 1 and Week 6. We know starting school can be daunting for a new entrant, so we aim to reduce anxiety by scheduling around 3 transition visits prior to your child starting school. This will be organised once you have completed the enrolment paperwork and attended one of our new entrant transition days. 150th Celebrations

St Barnabas Church Update

I find stories of people’s lives fascinating. I think we were wired to enjoy a good story – perhaps that’s why Jesus often taught the ideas of how to best be human in his stories. Anyone who attended a St Barnabas service in the month of October will likely tell you some fascinating facts about the Saints, as we looked at stories from their lives in the lead-up to All Saints and All Souls Days. We kicked off October with a wonderful pet service and we want to say a very special thank you to Animates, New World Ravenswood, North Canterbury Stockfeed Supply, Paws Vets and Pegasus Bay Vets for hooking us up with some fabulous prizes. There are some very happy pets (and humans) in North Canterbury because of this event!

of Jesus. You are most welcome to contact us through our church website at www.stbarnabaswoodend.org for any baptism / marriage / house blessing needs you might have. Our 30-minute pop-in Weekday 5pm prayer times continue to be popular for many. Some people report driving past and feeling drawn to come in to experience a moment of peace from life’s business. Everyone is welcome.

Communion / Eucharist is now available on Thursdays at 5pm if you can’t make it to one of our Sunday services (9.30am or 4pm with a children’s programme at both). What’s happening in the church building: Mondays: Eldercare 1.30pm

If you were walking along Pegasus Beach a few weeks ago you may have witnessed a baptism in the ocean! It was still a bit chilly but what an amazing spot to publicly show your commitment to following the way

Wednesdays: Evening – multiple life groups. Come and find your people. Fridays: 10am Music and Play, free food on Friday @ Four Every weekday – 5pm Prayer Sunday Services – 9.30am and 4pm May you feel peace and know you are loved.

Woodend Methodist Report

At long last the days are getting warmer, but we still seem to be reverting back to cold temperatures every now and then. The flower arrangements on a Sunday in the church have been stunning with all the beautiful, coloured flowers blooming at present.

On Sunday 3 November at 9am we will be holding our Candle Lighting Service where people can light a candle for a loved one or friend who has passed in the last year. Everyone is welcome. WAIORA LINKS COMMUNITY TRUST

Ravenswood ~ Woodend ~ Pegasus ~ Waikuku

In October, WLCT introduced our latest activity, a minivan trip to the Ohoka Market. Both were well and truly enjoyed by those visiting the market on a Friday morning. We can pick you up and drop you off at your home. We ask for a gold coin donation to help us pay for the hire of the van. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome to email us or message us on Facebook. Our details are at the bottom of this page. Our guest speaker at the cuppa on the

9th of October was Liz from Death Café NC, as seen in our picture. Liz spoke about the elephant in the room, death itself, and how important it is to have access to information that will help everyone

navigate this difficult but unavoidable journey in life.

Our 13 November speakers will be members of the Waikuku Surf and Life Saving Club talking to us about summer and sea activities and the importance of beach safety. The second speaker of the day will be representatives of the Woodend/Pegasus Lions. We will hear more about the many interests the Lions have and we will have an opportunity to buy Christmas cakes so please bring cash or cards to buy one of the best cakes on the market.

We are collaborating with the Peg/Wood Lions, The Woodend Fire Brigade and the Waikuku Rural Fire Serv for this year’s Toot for Tucker on the 3rd of Dec. This charity event, asking for nonperishable food, toiletries, and pet food, has been running for 13 years. Toot for tucker is one of the biggest contributors to the North Canterbury Food Banks. This is everyone's opportunity to donate. We need drivers and collectors. Please contact us if you are free to help for 2 hours.

We want to thank our sponsors for their support: Ray White Pegasus, New World Ravenswood, Ravenswood North Canterbury, The Good Home, Pegasus , and COGS

Tūhaitara Coastal Park

Kia ora koutou katoa ngā hoa o Tūhaitara Coastal Park – Hello to all friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park. Our race to plant thousands of trees, shrubs and grasses before summer has been underway over the recent autumn and spring months. Our recent community planting day in Huria Reserve, Kaiapoi was a great success with five hundred plants getting into the ground. If you came and helped out with your friends and whānau, we and our local birds thank you dearly. If you missed it,

don’t worry, we will be having another big planting day in the reserve in Autumn of 2025, so make sure to keep an eye on our Friends of Tūhaitara Facebook page for updates.

We recently did a check of our plants from last year to see how well they’re doing. We saw lots of success with planting under cover of other trees whether they be native or exotic. These larger trees act

as the adults in the plant community to protect the younger plants from frost in winter and harsh sun in summer by

sheltering them from above. Photo 1 top left, shows a happy akiraho tree that was planted within the year and grown under cover of pine trees with dappled light. Another example can be seen in photos 2 and 3 both left where a older kahikatea (photo 2) and totara (photo 3) both did well when planted next to exotic gorse. In celebration of the valuable mahi (work) done by volunteers in Waimakariri the Waimakariri District Council will host a community event on Sunday the 10 November at Trousellot Park in Kaiapoi. This event will run from 11am-2pm where there will be games, nature activities, music, sausage sizzles and more. Come along and have fun engaging and learning about our environment and biodiversity. With all this planting going on the

team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park are extremely busy right now so we can’t take calls and might be occupied when you walk past the office, but you’re always welcome to send us a message on Facebook, Instagram or via the form on our website. We will respond to these messages as soon as we can. We’re looking forward to things getting back to normal in a couple of months, as well as seeing everyone out and about as the weather warms up! Ka kite anō au i a koutou – I’ll see you again.

The Celebrate Recovery programme

The Celebrate Recovery programme (introduced into the community seven months ago) has already seen participant’s lives change on their road to recovery. As one participant said, “My life is totally different now from what it was seven months ago.”

Recovery is from any hurt, habit or hangup. We are not clinicians, but we are changed as we share our experiences, strengths and hopes with one another. This happens as we work through the twelve steps and their

to change lives. We’ve heard the old saying, “Time heals all wounds,” but unfortunately, in many cases, this is not true, and time can make things worse.

We realised that if we bypass our emotional stages with easy answers, then all our issues do is take on a deeper form of disguise and come out through our addiction, irritability or misdirected anger. Hence, the value of the group is that people are listened to and can talk.

Biblical comparisons.

We meet over a shared meal that lasts an hour. Then, we have our open share, followed by specific groups. Thursday evening takes two hours or three, depending on whether you have the meal.

A group of us who attend Grace Vineyard Church (Rangiora and Pegasus) saw the value of the programme and its huge potential

We meet at The Salvation Army Church in Rangiora. All welcome. Address: 12 Ashley Street Rangiora. When: Thursday evenings Time: 6.00pm (meal) or 7.00pm (programme)

Meal cost donation of $7.00 - Includes supper at 9.00pm (unless unable to pay this).

Cuppa in the Community

Free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas.

10am first Tuesday monthly at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend. We welcomed Sergeant Don Munro, Community Liaison Officer, NZ Police, to talk to our group. Community liaison serves Waimakariri, Hurunui and Selwyn districts, a vast area. He

gave an overview of happenings in the area, which have been relatively minor. Street cameras can pick up number plates and more are planned for the Waimakariri district, these are helpful in deterring criminal activities and apprehending offenders. There are more police on the beat which is reassuring.

There was discussion around when to call 111. Don explained that “if it’s happening now” call 111 but if it has already happened then 105 is the number to call. Phone scams were discussed, and Don’s advice is “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” Never give out bank account numbers or pin numbers. There was also discussion about the possibility of having a community patrol.

For your diary: 5 November – Citizens Advice Bureau.

3 December – The Lions, they will be selling Christmas cakes.

Thank you, Aotearoa Gaming Trust! Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to give a BIG shout out to the Aotearoa Gaming Trust for their unwavering support of youth mentoring in North Canterbury. For many years, the Trust has provided crucial funding enabling our Mentoring Coordinators to create life-changing friendships - just like Vinnie (Little) and Brendan (Big) pictured, our newest match! The boys can’t wait to get outside to look for

lizards and explore nature!

We are incredibly grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of the Trust’s socially responsible gaming operation and together, we are making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable rangatahi, providing them the guidance and support they need to thrive.
