St John Annual Appeal 4-10 April Be seen for Team Green St John ambulance officers will be fundraising from 4-10 April for the important equipment, ambulances and medical supplies they need to keep saving lives in the community. The North Canterbury Area Committees need to fundraise $6000 per day in order to provide the various products and services that St John offer. These include emergency ambulance cover, medical alarms, first aid training, youth programmes, caring caller and health shuttles.

DID YOU KNOW: • St John attended 4296 incidents in the North Canterbury Area in the past 12 months. • A fully equipped ambulance costs $211,000. • St John trains over 60,000 people in First Aid each year. • St John installs 2000 medical alarms each year.

Over 400,000 New Zealanders will call St John for help this year because they are very sick or injured. Donations made during their Annual Appeal will help St John respond to these calls faster and with the best equipment possible. The annual appeal will involve a number of street collections at various locations throughout the district, as well as public displays at the Rangiora and Amberley Libraries, Health 2000 and ASB Rangiora.

The increased distribution into Pegasus is proudly supported by the LIONS CLUB of WOODEND. WOODEND

Woodend Community Association

REPORT FOR MARCH 2016

REPRESENTATION REVIEW For those who were unaware of this review and what it meant for us, here is a very simple précis. The Waimakariri District Council undertook a review of local representation in the District. The outcome of this, after advertising for feedback, was the decision to change the number of Community Boards and the areas to be represented by them. There was very little response to the request for comment and this was possibly due to a certain amount of ambiguity of the proposal put forward and the request for response. This was not necessarily a deliberate action, but brought about by time restraints and the need for action. The meat of the matter, and what was discussed by the Community Assoc. was the make up of the zones. i.e. Linking Woodend/Pegasus/Ashley communities with Kaiapoi in an enlarged Eastern zone. It was the general feeling of the Committee, supported by the Pegasus Residents Group, that this arrangement would not serve our Communities well and we made a submission to the Local Government Commission expressing our concerns and asked to be heard on the matter. We were granted this request and represented our appeal to the Commission on the 9th. of this month. The Pegasus Residents Group also presented at the hearing. Without going into a lot of detail, the main objection came down to the interpretation of Communities of Interest. Some of the parameters advanced from the review, the Council undertook, were fairly board and somewhat nefarious, but no doubt considered in good faith. Some examples of this were the Coastal Links, Roading net Page 4 THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2016

works, School Zones etc. So apart from registering our dissent regarding the process of the Representation Review it came down to the interpretation of Communities of Interest. Our feelings were that we had little in common with Kaiapoi (No Ill Will) and that issues facing them and others impacting us were too diverse and shared little in common. It was also the felt that because of this divergence of interest, the interests of the Ashley/Woodend/Pegasus could become compromised. The result of our appeal is now in the lap of the Commission WALKWAY/CYCLEWAY PROJECT TO WOODEND BEACH Those of you who have ventured down to the Beach will have observed the progress made to date on stage two of our project. What is missing from this stage is the negotiation over/around the sand dunes, just east of the Sandhill Road junction, and around the “S” bends further east. It has been decided, after discussion and input from Council, that the most suitable solution was the employment of Gabion Basket retaining which would allow the pathway to be located at road level. The implication of this has of course meant the need for further fund raising. Some applications have been made to various sources which we hope will be realised, along with other fundraising activities proposed. The other problem area, which we hope has been resolved, has to do with tree growth intruding into the pathways alignment at the “S” bends. The continuation of Stage Two, which was to be around the bends has halted short of the area until a resolve of the tree intrusion is made. Report continues on page 13 >>>

Woodend Combined Probus Club

Since it was our AGM last month we did not arrange Speakers. Instead, following a delicious afternoon tea, supplied by our members, we were well entertained by Mike and Ian of the “Northbrook Nostalgia” music group. With Mike on violin and Ian on the accordion, and with the aid of distributed song sheets we all tripped down memory lane to such favourites as “Pack Up Your Troubles” and “Daisy, Daisy”. This proved to be a very relaxing way to end an AGM!

Our regular day outing was to the 3.5 hectare Broadfields Garden near Springston. The day was lovely and we all enjoyed the beautiful gardens, sculptures and other items of interest. Lunch was at the Springston Hotel where all 48 of us had an excellent meal before returning to Woodend. On an overcast day in early March 37

of us, including members from other Probus Clubs, headed North for a six day coach tour to Blenheim/Nelson. The trip was superbly organised for us by our Activities Officer Peter Erwood. Lunch at the Cellar View restaurant near Kaikoura set the standard for the wonderful meals we enjoyed for the rest of the trip! In Blenheim we had a guided tour of the WW I aircraft exhibition at Omaka, followed by a visit to the Makana Confections chocolate shop for viewing and tasting! We travelled to Nelson via Picton and the wonderfully scenic Road to Havelock, skilfully negotiated by our driver Rob. Highlights of our stay in Nelson included visits to the Founders Heritage Park, the World of Wearable Art, Högland Glass, Seifried Estate Winery (for wine tasting and an excellent lunch) and the Icon Gallery and Sculpture Park. Throughout the trip we were lucky to have good weather and the Fun, Fellowship and Friendship we all enjoyed could not have been more evident. Our March coffee morning was held at Artisans Rangiora where club members again enjoyed good coffee, pastries and yarns!

ROAD SAFETY A huge thank you to the fine people of Woodend who are working with us to improve safety for all by • using the Kea crossing points on School Road and the Main North Road • staying with cars parked on the Woodend/Rangiora Road drop off point • parking away from the western side (opposite the carpark) of Woodend Rangiora Road • observing speed limits around school Just to let you know that the NZ police, our staff and our student leaders are very concerned that over 200 speeding tickets (mostly to people who don’t live in Woodend) have been issued recently on Rangiora Woodend Road. Our student leaders are gathering up more data and information about traffic speeds, vehicle types and volumes before undertaking some innovative educational initiatives. We will up date you all via the Woodpecker as we/they progress. BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS We are getting prepared for the upcoming 2016 board of trustee elections. We are looking for trustees to stand for election and would love to hear from you if you

What is a School Board of Trustees? School boards are responsible for the school’s performance and ensuring that all legal requirements are met. The board - is accountable for student achievement - sets the vision for the school - ensures the school complies with legal and policy requirements. What skills do trustees need? Trustees are active leaders in their school and need to work well in a team, ask challenging questions and have good communication skills. Boards need a balance of skills and experiences to ensure effective processes for planning, monitoring, reporting and reviewing the school’s performance are in place. We have available at school some booklets “A Parents’ Guide to the role of the board of trustees” and more information is available on http://www.trustee-election.co.nz/ becoming-a trustee SCHOOL CARETAKER Lindsay Hartley our long time Caretaker retired from his role as Caretaker/ Property Manager before Easter. Lindsay had been with us for thirteen years as a dedicated caretaker who connected so well with our students, staff and parents. We are going to miss him so much. On behalf of the school we wish him the very best in his retirement !! On his last day students dressed up as Mr Hartley and held a special assembly and bell ringing assembly to thank and farewell him.

Filipino community evening The Rangiora Library will host a Filipino migrants’ night on Saturday 9 April to provide the district’s steadily increasing Filipino population with information and advice about free services available from Waimakariri Libraries, the Council, Citizens Advice Bureau and Immigration New Zealand. The Library is working closely with the president of Alpha Phi Omega South Island Alumni Association, a Filipino based international leadership development organisation, Roberto ‘Bob’ Bolanos who recognises the value of the migrants’ night in bringing Filipinos together, particularly those who are new to the community. “Our hope is that by creating events that bring people together we will be able to provide them with the information that will help them navigate their new life and integrate into the communities in which they live”, he says. The Filipino community in the Waimakariri District has been growing steadily over recent years. The ‘Pinoys’ – a colloquial term used to describe people of Filipino descent - are working across a wide range of industries including dairy farming,

Page 14

THE WOODPECKER APRIL 2016

health care, construction, IT and food and beverage, and can experience significant stresses in adjusting and adapting to language, local customs and behaviours and even seasonal changes. Filipino values are strongly based on close family and community ties with a focus on preserving social harmony and acceptance within a group. Bob Bolanos says that almost every important event in Filipino life involves food. ‘Magkita tayo’ - Let’s meet, ‘Mag salu-salo tayo’ - Let’s share a meal and ‘Mag usap tayo’ - Let’s talk, are central tenets to the Filipino way of life, and this is the base on which the Filipino community night at the Rangiora Library is structured. The organisers hope that, by initiating first contact, ‘Pinoys’ will get to know each other and begin to work together in the gathering of information and support from the organisations that already exist to provide it. The organisers have set up a Facebook page (Waimakariri Filipino Community Group) for those who want to find out more or register for the Filipino community night.

You are the most important teacher your child will ever have

Woodend Playcentre celebrated Easter with great excitement from the children. Of course there was the obligatory egg hunt which was very well received by the little ones, as well as the wonderful crafts utilising the children’s imagination and creativity with colour, paint, shapes, coloured & textured paper, and using the light to shine through their creations.

The Fish n Chip night was a great success. It was a great chance to catch up with families we don’t normally meet due to attending alternative days. The children certainly devoured as many chips as they could, I’m not sure there were many left at the end of the evening!! We also had the scooters and ride on toys out so the circuit got a good workout. The holidays are almost upon us so a good break away will get everyone rejuvenated with wonderful new ideas and energy. Playcentre finishes Friday 15 April and restarts Monday 2nd May. On a slightly separate note, Woodend Playcentre is fundraising for new equipment thus selling the 2016/ 2017 Entertainment Book and it’s OUT NOW with earlybird offers worth over $150.00!!! For those that don’t know, the offers

include discounts 50% off, 2 for 1, buy one get one free in up to 33 places locally including: Five Stags Restaurant Rangiora, Capones Rangiora, Winnie Bagoes, Flat White Pegasus, Wee Dram Farm Park, Pink Sugar Oxford (ideal for Mothers Day afternoon tea?)...the list even includes Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura, Nelson, Christchurch... Why wouldn’t you hee hee As well as the Book, it is also an App which is fantastic as all the offers just download straight to your phone (2 devices straight away, up to 4 total). LETTERS to the Editor

NEWS from The Woodpecker

Dear Madam I write the following for your most informative and enjoyable Woodpecker magazine… “My oh my, what a ruckus there was in my home town of Pegasus recently! Toys flew out of cots; dummies were spat; roofs were hit; nighties were ripped and those who perceived themselves to be of the upper echelons were incandescent with it…RAGE. Planet Facebook turned dark purple with a seething mass of ill-informed, ne’er do wrong, venomous creatures wanting to take over the world – or at least the Woodpecker. There was, of course, a small group of those of us in the know who sat quietly amused and entertained throughout. ‘Harry’, you cheeky little chappy you. Keep up the good work. Yours most very sincerely Penny Swerth

CHURCH NOTICES Anglican Parish of Woodend-Pegasus St. Barnabas Church

A community of believers, serving the wider community in love Rev. Gerard Jacobs

Now the church roof has been replaced, the Presbyterian Support lunch meetings and Mainly Music have both resumed. A number of new families have joined Mainly Music in the last few weeks, in addition to those who have returned, and we have been delighted to welcome friends both old and new. The main focus this month of course has been on Lent and the season of Easter, with some thought-provoking sermons presented by our new vicar. It has been a pleasure to start getting to know him and his wife Rachel. On the 20th, Palm Sunday, we celebrated Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, beginning with a procession from the former Sunday School building in Main North Road to the

church. If you were out and about that morning, you would have seen us, carrying fern fronds and singing as we went. Since Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem that day, we were proudly led by our church donkey, Harriet, accompanied by her foal. Our thanks to the many drivers who slowed down and acknowledged what we were doing. The morning service on Good Friday was a far quieter, more contemplative one. As always, there was much to think about, as we remembered how Jesus’ willingly suffered and died for us all. Finally, we had a poignant and joyful Easter Sunday service, as we celebrated Jesus’ resurrection and the hope it gives for the future of every one of us. Thanks be to God!
