JULY 2015

Produced for the community, by the community

Unique Roller skating fundraiser The Woodend Community Association is holding a unique roller skating fundraising event in the Woodend Community Centre, funds raised are going towards the Woodend Beach Pathway project which covers 3.8km from Woodend town to Woodend Beach. The event is being held on Saturday 25th of July and is titled roller Skating with Phat SK8. Children are encouraged to “Get their glow on” by wearing their brightest and loudest clothes and accessories for the 2 hours of music, games and prizes from 3:30pm.

Organiser Jacqui Miller says the event is suitable for children aged 5 to 13 years, the cost is $8.00 per child, all skates and safety gear are provided and caregivers are required to attend. Food and drinks will be available for children to purchase and coffee for caregivers. Tickets can be purchased on the day or in advance from the 20th July at Woodend School Office (Cash only). “We need to raise a significant amount of money for the pathway project, but fundraising doesn’t need to be boring, especially with the help of Ingrid from Phat Sk8!!” Says Miller.

“Rollerskating is an ideal activity in our Community Centre and a great way to spend a wintry afternoon.”

“Every contribution counts towards our final goal, you can follow the progress of the pathway project on facebook by ‘liking’ our Cycle/Walkway Project Woodend Beach Road or donate a little or on www.givealittle.co.nz.” If you would like to learn more about this event, or are available to lend a hand please contact Jacqui Miller on 021 890 358.

National Daffodil Society show to be held in Woodend The National Daffodil Society comes to Woodend this spring for the first time, to join the 83rd presentation of the Woodend Spring Flower Show. The show will be titled Daffodil Magic. National Society members will bring flowers from as far as Winton in the deep south to north of Auckland and all places in between. The latest creations in the daffodil world will be on show.

the early days.

Today’s National Daffodil Society serves to promote the cultivation, exhibition and awareness of daffodils in New Zealand. Advances in breeding aim for better formed flowers and different colour combinations, while extending the flowering season with particular emphasis on autumn flowering varieties.

Daffodil Magic!

New Zealand is at the fore front of world daffodil breeding and holds its own in the company of the United Kingdom, Ireland, the USA and Australia. The best will be on display and the public will be seeing some of the very latest in daffodil varieties.

The Woodend Spring Flower Show has a long tradition. Originally set up by a group of farmers’ wives to celebrate spring flowers, the 83rd show is a cooperative venture by the Woodend Garden Club and the Woodend Lions Club.

The show has a long and colourful history with many Woodend identities leaving their footprints. The collection of show trophies remind us of the significant contribution to exhibiting daffodils made by the likes of Dick Watson and Fred Webber. There was even a Woodend Horticultural Society in Page 4

THE WOODPECKER JULY 2015

Visitors will be impressed by the diversity of the flowers and the huge range of varieties and divisions. There is more to a daffodil than a yellow trumpet. Daffodil Magic Woodend 2015 will be opened by Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers at 2.30pm on Saturday 26 September at the Woodend Community Centre. It is a two day show, concluding at 4pm on Sunday 27 September. Entry will be by gold coin donation. There will be a wide range of flowers, plants and craft exhibits on show. For the public there will be raffles, cut flowers, devonshire teas, Lions Club of Woodend susage sizzle and a range of trade exhibitors. Something for everyone!

The Schedule will be available mid July at the Grub Hub this outlines sections and rules of entry etc plus information on the children’s section and school holiday craft class - get your copy and start planning your entries now!

Woodend centres involved in Toddlers’ Big Day In

The Toddlers’ Big Day In is being held on Sunday 19th of July from 10:30am 2:30pm at New Life School Gymnasium on Denchs Rd in Rangiora. The event is sponsored by local Real Estate Agent Michelle Nelson of Bayleys.

Event organizer Belinda Topp says the event is really shaping up now with several stalls registered for the day including Woodend Preschool & Nursery and Woodend Play Centre. “Along side all of these community minded folk we have the very popular Natural Magic Pirate Band who will be entertaining the littlies and their parents with their hilarious songs and captivating puppet show.”

“Adam Allsorts the Clown is always a ‘must see’ with his ‘tiny dog’ ‘Tiny’ and his juggling lessons! An all time favourite from the past events has been the magical fairies who simply entrance the children with their stories.” Topp says they still have room for other centres, care providers or craft stall

Woodend town centre - a bit tricky to plan for

Last week a group of CPIT students presented the results of a project they had completed, as part of their studies, on the Woodend town centre. They had put a lot of work into it, and they came up with some really interesting and creative ideas. They said they that didn’t find it easy, which I would have to endorse.

The Woodend town centre is a bit tricky to plan for because it doesn’t have the feeling of centrality that we find in, for instance, Kaiapoi and Rangiora. This

is partly due to the close proximity of those two towns with their larger business centres that make it hard for Woodend businesses to compete with. There is also the fact that a number of local businesses also have, for their good reasons, their own parking in front of their buildings, which again detracts from the impression of a town centre.

There is furthermore the longer term problem of Main North Road also being State Highway 1 with its large traffic flow. It’s not an ideal environment for a shopping centre serving the town and surrounding areas. There is also uncertainty about the future once the bypass is in place and the unknown effects of likely commercial development in the Ravenswood subdivision in the north of Woodend. Having said all that, it is easy to see that the population of the Woodend-PegasusWaikuku area is growing fast and should be able to support a reasonable level of retail activity. This may not all be shops meeting everyday needs. It is apparent throughout the world that as retailing migrates to the supermarkets and “big boxes”, traditional town centres are becoming the province of specialty retailers and outlets like cafés and restaurants. Maybe that is part of Woodend’s future!

Our Matariki celebration was excellent. Along with a potluck dinner, the children

Woodend Combined Probus Club

Our Mini-Speaker in June was a lady who over many years had built up a very successful quality garment business working from home. The range included evening gowns, ball gowns, wedding gowns, outfits for mother-of-the-bride etc. Life was extremely busy and she employed up to 7 part-time staff. This meant working a lot of hours to keep the enterprise going so she decided to open a retail shop and showroom. This was in 1983 and the shop was subsequently opened on the very day that her son won a Gold Medal at the World Rowing Championships! So there was double celebration for the family that day! However, during the ensuing years, the retail environment gradually became more difficult with devaluation of the dollar, the introduction of GST etc. Also there were protracted problems with the lease of the premises. All this culminated in our speaker withdrawing from her retail ventures in 1995 and working from home again until retiring in 2007. Our Main Speaker this month was retired Lawyer (and subsequently deer farmer) Colin Perrior. He was a solicitor in England before leaving to become a member of H.M. Overseas Judiciary in Fiji/Hong Kong 1976-1990. He spoke about the selection and appointment of judges in New Zealand, where they are effectively appointed for life, rather than having a fixed term as is more common elsewhere. He also spoke about length of sentencing, noting that after 5 years anyone becomes pretty well institutionalised and that what cuts into Page 14

THE WOODPECKER JULY 2015

crime rate is certainty of detection. He told us that Fiji in the 70’s was a very different Fiji from the one we visit on holiday today and he was privileged to be there among the nicest people anywhere. He provided us with several instructive and amusing anecdotes of his time there where he was required to dispense justice in the outer islands. He drew attention to the different treatment of convicted offenders in Hong Kong than in New Zealand where in the former there is a “bootcamp” regime for second offenders and only 5% recidivism. Most of the stories Colin recounted however were drawn from the lighter side of his time in Fiji and were very much appreciated by our Club Members.

The monthly outing was to the Foodstuffs Distribution Centre at Hornby and was well-supported by 53 members in a full coach! We were warmly welcomed by Manager Scott Fairweather and his assistant Tony. After an explanation of the history and method of operation we were given a tour of the huge Distribution Centre building which covered an area of 7 rugby pitches! On average the Centre handles over a million carton movements in/out per week, supplying New World, Pak’n Save, Four Square, Henry’s etc. This interesting visit was followed by an excellent lunch at the Hornby Working Men’s Club. The June Coffee Morning was held at the “Fat Cat Café” in Rangiora and was well supported by 17 Members despite the cold weather. Good coffee and good yarns were enjoyed by all.
