Club tunes up for another popular community event and Country Music Show Case The Woodend Beach Country Much Club is once again tuning up for their annual festival. Everyone is welcome to attend the popular community event, which is nearly 30 years old! This year it is being held on the 14th & 15th of November at the Woodend Village Domain, which is on the corner of School Road and Woodend/Rangiora Road. Entry is free to the outdoor event, the community is encouraged to come along with sun hat and sun block and enjoy a great family day listening to music from walk up’s and guest artists. There will be a BBQ, hot sausages, cups of tea and scones available throughout the day. If the weather is poorly the event will be moved to the Woodend Community Centre across the road. The festival kicks off on Saturday with walk up singers and guest artists from 11:00am through to 4:30pm. Sunday begins at 10:30am with walk-ups performing Gospel till lunch time, then back to country music for the afternoon.
The Country Music Show Case is being held on Saturday night at the Hornby Club, entry is $15.00 per person with the show kicking off at 7:30pm. This years guests are Legal Tender, a very talented duo from the North Island who have previously won three awards at the Gore Gold Guitar Awards, as well as many more awards around New Zealand. The special support artist is Allan Barron, backed by one of New Zealand’s top show bands, Remedy.

The Woodend Beach Country Music Club hold Club Nights on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month in the Woodend Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend the Club Nights, which finish with a lovely supper where everyone has a chat and a laugh.

There’s a lot happening! As we get into spring and early summer, the community events become more frequent.
The Woodend School Fair has been and gone, and it was good to see a good crowd there. It is one of the town’s signal events and reminds us how important schools are in our community. The Woodend Bowling Club has had its season opening. A successful club providing sporting opportunity and competition to its community, the Bowling Club has been a Woodend fixture for many decades.
The annual Woodend Spring Flower Show was held last weekend including, for the first time, the National Daffodil Show. The main hall at the Woodend Community Centre was chock-full of magnificent daffodils of amazing variety, and the specifically Woodend show was in the adjoining rooms. There was a lot to see and a big crowd of locals and visitors – I especially liked the “noughts and crosses” painted stones done by the children. It isn’t often that Woodend hosts a national event and it couldn’t have happened with a Page 8

By all accounts, the National Daffodil Society was very happy with the support the event got, and we certainly hope they come again some time! Coming up we have the Pegasus Fun Run and Walk. Initiated as a replacement to the earthquake-affected Christchurch City-toSurf, it now stands on its own as an annual event, even although the Christchurch event was, of course, soon re-established. There is something for everyone – walking and running and short medium and long distances – the last through the Tuhaitara Coastal Park that is growing in popularity with the people of Canterbury. There’s a lot happening!
AGM Monday 9 November 7pm At the Woodend Rugby Club 202 Gladstone Road All welcome www.woodendrugby.co.nz The season has concluded and our Div 2 side were narrowly beaten in the ďŹ nal against Oxford. I was very proud of the way our young guys played against a very experienced Oxford side. This side has a lot of talent and potential and I am sure they can one day bring Woodend Rugby back in to the top competition. One concern for the club is that numbers are dropping in the later teenage grades which means we are most likely going to have to join other clubs in these grades, this must be a concern for North Canterbury as the numbers have dropped throughout the whole region. I would like to thank my committee this year for their work with the club. A special mention must go to Sherryn McPherson who is standing down as Secretary at the next AGM. Sherryn has done a sterling job in this role over the last 7 years and must be congratulated for her commitment to the club. I myself am also not standing as President so the club will be looking for new people to ďŹ ll these positions in the upcoming AGM in November. The AGM usually has poor attendance so I urge everyone to make an effort and attend this year. On another topic you will soon see the proposals the Gladstone Park working group have come up with in regards to developing Gladstone park in the next ten years. There were some good submissions that came
through and the group took all of these on board when coming up with the plan. I have personally been involved as the President in working with the other users of the park and look forward to seeing the plan being implemented over the next few years. We have the touch module starting on the 13th of October so if you are wanting to put a team in please contact Sally White at sallymw1970@gmail.com to register. We are also seeking referees and volunteers to help out on the night. It was with sadness that we said goodbye to Zale Stopforth this month, a great and courageous lady that will be sadly missed by us all. The Stopforth family have been involved with our club for many years with both Michael and Geoff playing for the club and then Mikes boys Tom and George. Michael was involved with the building of the extension of the club back in the eighties. Our love and thoughts are with you all. This will be my last article, so thanks to all those that have been involved with the club over the years. Woodend Combined Probus Club
Our September Mini-Speaker was a Club Member born during WW II who was the younger of two children. After the war the family moved from Papanui to Kaiapoi where she has lived ever since. After attending Christchurch Girls High School she trained as a General and Obstetric Nurse at Christchurch Hospital. This was a 3 ½ year apprenticeship–type course with training at Christchurch, Burwood and Princess Margaret (then newly opened) Hospitals. After graduation she married the boy she had known since Kaiapoi Borough School days – and 53 years later they still live in the same house they moved into when newly married. Soon after returning from honeymoon she was offered a job as a practice nurse which she did for almost two years until a son and then a daughter were born. When the children approached school age she decided to return to work but needed a refresher. This took the form of six months midwifery training at Christchurch Women’s Hospital – and she then stayed there for 27 years! There were huge changes during this time and when she left in 1996 a corporate management style was in play even in the Health Sector, with two competing hospital groups in Christchurch. To close her talk she shared some poignant stories that had significant memories for her in her nursing career. Our Main Speaker last month was John Thompson from the Waimakariri/Ashley Coastguard. The NZ Coastguard is a volunteer organisation run on professional lines, funded mainly by donations. The Waimakariri/Ashley Unit is part of the Coastguard Southern Region and covers 150 square nautical miles from Motunau down to New Brighton and out to the 12 nm seaward limit. Based in Kaiapoi, the Unit has 32 volunteer members of whom 17 are qualified for at-sea work. Last year the Kaiapoi team gave over 5000 volunteer-hours, covering Page 10

35 calls plus 5 police call-outs and many hours of training. It takes 18 months to fully train a new volunteer for at-sea rescue work. Remember that the Coastguard has to put to sea when everyone else is running for cover! The Coastguard’s main roles are Marine Rescue and Boating Education, covering a wide range of recreational activities including fishing, diving, swimming, sailing etc. John explained the dangerous nature of the bar at the mouth of the Waimakariri river, even for fisherman standing in relatively shallow water near the edge of the channel. He emphasised the need for being aware of potential danger in and around water and to always consider wearing a life-jacket - the modern inflatable jacket overcomes the objections to earlier bulky versions. The main Kaiapoi rescue vessel is a well-equipped 6.8 metre Naiad rigid hulled inflatable fitted with two 150 hp outboards, capable of carrying 7 people and with a top speed of 40 kts (74 kph). It is often launched within 7 minutes of the alarm call going out. John illustrated his very interesting talk with many dramatic pictures of sea conditions and of the predicaments that people can get into on and around water. Be careful out there! The Woodend Combined Probus Club bus trip last month was to the Westpac rescue helicopter base near the airport. This was a follow up to a previous talk to our club by Rachel McNutt of the CWC Air Rescue Trust.
During our visit there was an emergency callout, so we saw the very rapid deployment process put smoothly into action. Afterwards we all enjoyed lunch at the Papanui Club before returning to Woodend.

Woodend Garden Club
Forty eight members attended the August meeting held in the Woodend Community Hall. We were informed that the arrangement for the Spring Flower Show on track and many put there names down to help with setup, Devonshire teas, stewards and plant sale stall etc. Thank-you to the people who offered but we need more to help. Our speakers this month, Sue and Kate from the alpine nursery “Behind the Hedge” in Rangiora.
Sue and Kate spoke about how they grow there alpines from cuttings and seeds and the ise of dry blood and bone for fertilizer. Alpines are an outside plant and don’t mind the harsh winters. The ladies had with them a good array of plants for sale, not in flower but photo of the flowers they aksi grow purple and green asparagus in season. Table show results:

Woodend Bowling Club
Opening day saw a good number of our members present. Our President Mike Carpenter opened the afternoon with introductions to our visitors, our mayor and our local M.P. and the bowling club Patroness Jean Moody. After thanking the members who had worked hard over the winter renovating the green etc. he called upon Alan Pegley to brief us on the results of the bookarama which was held during the winter break. From the proceeds a defibrillator was purchased and Jack Dzenis was able to put it on show for us to see. A big thank you goes to Alan and Jack and their helpers for the success of the bookarama. A big thank-you also goes to the public for the marvellous support. Mike then called Noelene Johnstone and Henry Eder to roll up the first jack and bowl. As the green was still very soft after the previous heavy rain no bowling took place but the afternoon ended with a lovely afternoon tea. It is so lovely to see so many new members and we welcome them and hope they enjoy their time with us. We would still welcome many more folk, if you are thinking of joining us too! Championships have begun with the men beginning their fours competition. The women have played their President’s fours with two teams winning two games

Outstanding Community Service Recognised
At the Waimakariri District Council’s Community Service Awards ceremony held recently, 20 people were recognised for their outstanding voluntary contributions to the district. Now in its 25th year, the awards celebrate the significant contribution that these highly dedicated people make to the Waimakariri District in the areas of health, recreation, sport, education, arts, culture, welfare and youth.
Judy (Tussock) Rendel received an award for her long term dedication to youth in and around the Oxford Area. Amongst other youth support services, she has established great trust, and kept the community safe by providing a sober driver service for the youth of the community.
Bob Norrish was recognised for his passion and involvement during his sixteen and a half years as Principal of Oxford Area School. Along with being a highly active Principal, he has made time available to become involved in many community service organisations. Theresa Rosanowski received her award for her significant commitment to the equine community. She was the visionary and chief organiser of the Birch Hill Memorial Ride held in February 2015 to commemorate and honour the 10,000 horses, donkeys and mules that were killed in World War I. Following his move from Murchison to Oxford in 1989, Peter Hildyard has been an active member of the community in many aspects. He was recognised for his dedicated service to the community, including involvement in Search and Rescue, the Police, the Oxford Night Patrol Group and Civil Defence. Peter has been a St Johns Ambulance volunteer for the last 10 years. Raymond Mehrtens was awarded for his Page 24

many years of service and involvement in the Oxford community. He has been involved in several community organisations, including Scouts, the Oxford Rifle Club and the A&P Association. His most recent contribution was his tireless effort to extend the Oxford Museum to house the many items of vintage farm machinery items.
Peter Gardyne received his award for his passion and long term community commitment to the Pines/Kairaki Volunteer Fire Party, which he joined in 1978. Along with being a well-respected Rural Fire Officer, he also trains and encourages new members. John Bass was recognised for his service to the over 50’s in the Waimakariri District and his involvement with SeniorNet North Canterbury, rated as a highly successful branch at a national level. John is also an active voluntary member of several other community organisations.
Jillian Blatch was awarded for her dedicated contribution to the Oxford community in a number of areas including her representation on various committees, service to the health sector, volunteer work at the local playcentre, sports coaching, and 15 years’ service with the St Johns ambulance.
Bob Fox received his award for many years of involvement in the Rangiora community, including 15 years’ service on the Rangiora Businessmen’s Association. He spent time on the Rangiora Borough Council, administered the Rangiora Football Club and was involved with the North Canterbury Musical Society for 25 years.
Graeme Pratley was recognised for his many years of service to Budgeting Services North Canterbury and the Rangiora Budget Advisory Service. It is estimated that he would have contributed over 3000 hours of voluntary time over the 23 years of service.

Keith and Miranda Hales were jointly recognised for their varied contributions to the community, including 15 years’ service to the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Keith is a former president and life member of both the North Canterbury Racing Club and the Brackenfield Hunt, and both are involved in the Big Brother Big Sister organisation. Miranda has helped set up about 160 exhibitions in the Chamber Gallery, bringing high quality art to the people of the Waimakariri District. THE WOODPECKER OCTOBER 2015

Raising funds for new verandah at Woodend Playcentre On Wednesday, 14th October the Woodend Playcentre is holding a fundraising Quiz Night at Five Stags Rangiora. The event is supported by Harvey World Travel, Kaiapoi, as well as other local businesses with funds raised benefiting the Woodend Playcentre new verandah project. The need for the covered verandah is due to an increase in numbers as well as having the ability to be outside for activities such as messy play and painting all year round.
The verandah is to be built along the front of the existing building, up to the front door, which is half the length of building. Tickets are $50 per team of 5, those interested in purchasing tickets or requiring more information can contact Kim on 027
717 8754. Teams are to be seated at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. Raffle tickets will be available during the evening at $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 with many great prizes available including the grand prize from Harvey World Travel!

The Friday Cafe Talk sessions, at the Flat White Cafe in Pegasus, recommenced on 4th September. The starting time has been put back to 5.30 pm, so if you are used to seeing us there at 5 pm, we will be in a little later! If at any time you’d like to come up and say hello, we would love to meet you.
Mainly Music normally ceases during school holidays, but for this two week holiday we are continuing on with a modified programme. Next month, we will let you know how it has gone.
