Tutaepatu Lagoon and Te Kohanga Wetlands
This month we have had Professor Kiana Frank from the University of Hawaii and her team visit the park to continue the research project to analyse the sediment and microbes in Tutaepatu Lagoon and the Parks Biota Node network. This is an important international connect for the Trust and supports our commitment to research and education. Photo: Kiana working with local students.
The Forestry operations are continuing to make good progress and we are excited about the next stage to replant with a mix of commercial pines and native corridors. We will also be developing more connector and looped trails for walking, mountain biking and horses. We are also working with Waimakariri District Council on a community planting day along the trail at Woodend. This will be advertised soon. Things are quiet on the animal pest front, but we are gearing up for the spring movement. The number of native bird species in and around Tutaepatu lagoon and Te Kohanga wetlands especially confirmation of a Bittern is testament to the work of our volunteer trappers. We will be looking for more helpers for the northern end of the Park and Pegasus Town wetlands. If you want to help, please contact the Trust office 313 1768.
The Invigorator – A bracing dip! Waikuku Beach Surf Life Saving Club held their annual mid-winter plunge on Sunday 22 July at Waikuku Beach on a bitterly cold and rainy day, which challenged the hardiest of souls, and yet more than 200 people flocked there regardless, brave enough to brace the challenge, wearing attire such as onesies, pyjamas, swimwear and costumes.

The wait is nearly over for North Canterbury’s latest bar and restaurant soon to open overlooking Lake Pegasus. The Good Home Pegasus will have a flavour all of its own! When you visit them there will be an enticing array of drinks at the bar, tempting treats on the menu and smiles of the friendly folk who will serve them to you. Pegasus residents Andy and Jess Laloli, with their daughter Giorgiana, and soon to arrive baby boy, are excited to bring the Good Home gastropub to the area and have enjoyed listening to the excitement and encouragement from locals about a new venue opening in their backyard. Even though it’s hard to define what home means to everyone, there is something it does share. It’s a feeling. A feeling of comfort, the place you can finally let out your breath, relax, unwind and be at ease. “We’ve recreated this feeling by fashioning spaces for you to feel at ease in and call your own. Spaces to relax; hang with a bunch of friends, family or the crew from work.” Laloli says The Good Home Pegasus is open seven days a week from 10am at 62 Pegasus Main Street, Pegasus. For details or reservations, phone 03 967 6891 or visit thegoodhomepegasus.co.nz.
Pegasus Community Centre PRGI have a meeting coming up with a consultant whose job is to make recommendations to WDC regarding community facilities for Pegasus and Woodend / Ravenswood. We would very much like to hear from anyone who has an interest in future use of the Pegasus Community Centre to help us determine what the needs of our community are. Please email us now at prgi@ pegasusresidentsgroup.com To find out what is happening this month at the Pegasus Community Centre, please check the PCC calendar on our website or Facebook page. pegasusresidentsgroup. com Police Update – 19 July 2018 The police have asked us to pass on an update to Pegasus residents with regard to the ‘Bottle O’ ram raids. They want to put your minds at ease knowing that the offenders have been identified and 5 out of 6 of them have been arrested and charged. They are still looking for the 6th but know who it is. The offenders were aged 15 - 16 and were not local. They were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offences and were already known to police. The cameras that were in place at the ‘Bottle O’ at the time of the second ram raid were instrumental in seeing the offenders caught. The purpose of this information is to provide some reassurance to Pegasus residents. Our thanks to the police for providing the update. THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2018

NORTH CANTERBURY Media Release Help with the cost of insulating your home “If your home does not have insulation yet, now’s a good time to do something about it” says Beverley Mitchell from Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury. “A properly insulated home will be easier to heat and is able to stay at a comfortable temperature when it’s hot outside in the summer. The Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes programme, which provided a 50% subsidy to low income home owners and landlords with low income tenants, has been replaced by the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme. This programme started on 1 July 2018 and is available to low income homeowners. It provides a grant that covers 67% of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation in the home. You can find out whether you are eligible for this grant by contracting a registered insulation provider (listed on the Energywise website, www.energywise.govt.nz). If you are renting and your landlord has missed out on the Warm Up New Zealand grant, they still must have insulation installed in the rental property by 1 July 2019. This is a legal obligation.” Beverley Mitchell says that you may be able to get other types of help with keeping your home warm this winter. “For example, if you have a SuperGoldCard you may be able to get a discount on heating products (or insulation) on your card. If you receive a Work and Income benefit – including NZ Superannuation – from 1 July 2018 you will receive a Winter Heating Payment over the winter months to help with the cost of heating. There are also a number of strategies that won’t cost too much, such as blocking draughts under doors and around windows, putting rugs on your floor and covering your windows with lined curtains. If you aren’t sure how to keep your home warm this winter, come and see us at the CAB. We can help you work out what options are available that will suit your circumstances.” You are welcome to call in at the Trevor Inch Memorial Library 141 Percival Street, Rangiora, Monday to Friday from 9 am until 4.30 pm, Saturday 10 am – 1 pm; phone us on 03 313 8822 – free phone 0800 367 222; or email us at northcanterbury@cab.org.nz Citizens Advice Bureaux is an independent community organisation offering a free, confidential and independent service of information, assistance and referral from 84 locations stretching from Northland to Invercargill. Long Term Plan Submissions One thing I won’t miss when I finally finish in this role, is signing off all the letters that are replying to Long Term Plan (LTP) submissions. I have just about completed this task – and no, I don’t write them, but I do read and check them! There have been over 800 submissions.
One of the advantages of the 10-year financial planning process is that we don’t have to take up all the good ideas at once: we can signal that while something may not be affordable this year, it might be able to be implemented in a later year. The next LTP will come in 2021, although there will be two Annual Plans in between. We no longer have to consult on these, but the Waimakariri District Council does because we see it as one way of keeping our community informed.
Many of the responses on the same topics naturally get the same replies and those that came in by email are replied to by email and have my electronically-generated signature attached, but those that came by The Annual Plans also give us the snail-mail will get my personal signature. opportunity to change the LTP if it is deemed necessary by the Council and There are about 140 of those and they take community. some reading. I’m not complaining about any of this because the whole process gives us, both elected members and staff, an insight into how our community is thinking on a huge range of topics. Many are very supportive of what the Council is doing in many areas, but there is always, of course, room for improvement. Submitters are more likely to ask for more spending, not less, and it is interesting to read those who want ‘the Council’ to pay for something rather than ratepayers! We are fortunate to have Mike Seabourne from the NZTA and Jenny Lake from Ravenswood Developments as our guest speakers. Mike will present on the NZTA Ashley to Belfast Safety Project and the Woodend Corridor Safety Improvements Project. These NZTA projects are focussed on safety and access improvements along the stretch of SH1 between Ashley and Belfast. Jenny will present on the latest developments with Ravenswood. Both topics have a major impact on Woodend, so we encourage you to attend to benefit from hearing from Mike and Jenny directly on these projects. Nominations can be made for Woodend Community Association Committee and office bearer roles. The closing date for these nominations is Monday 27 August and can be emailed to woodend.community.association@ gmail.com The Agenda will be sent out to WCA members, invitees, and posted on our Facebook page over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for it! Community Groups Andy Childs and Robyn Dolamore have been making contact with Woodend community groups throughout July. We are wanting to promote your groups to our community through our website and social media pages. Please get in contact with us if we haven’t already talked to you so we can discuss how we can help you. Contact details below. Sponsorship We are looking for sponsorship for some projects that we have in the pipeline of a various nature throughout the community. Social Media Star We are looking for a person who would be able to commit up to 1 hour a week to manage our social media pages. Primarily to ensure that any messages from our community members are responded to and posts from all of our local businesses and community groups are shared regularly. Photographer We are looking for someone who has great photography skills locally to become a Committee member. We need someone who has a keen eye for the beauty of Woodend and who might have an hour a month to help us fill up our photo database. If this is of interest, please email us. Local Events We support all local events in Woodend. If businesses, community groups or individuals are running any events locally or even a garage sale, let us know so we can post to our social media pages. Thank you A huge thank you to Sandra Shield for sending through beautiful photos from 2012 of heavy snow in Woodend. Membership We have heard from a lot of people following our mailbox delivery of information on how to join WCA which is fantastic. Please note, if you haven’t received any emails from us over the last few months, your membership may have lapsed. Please get in contact with us to renew or to join. Connect with us to deepen your connection to Woodend. A Great Example of Engagement with our Members A benefit of becoming a member of WCA is that you have direct access to the Committee whenever you have something to say. A member raised that we should be able to walk dogs across a nice path from Gladstone Road rather than go all the way around to Pegasus to enter the dog park. Within a few days we have had confirmation that this path is going to be created as well as shade trees put into the dog park which is such fantastic news. This is a perfect example of communities working together. Last month, instead of an outing, we had our mid-winter lunch. This year we dined at the new ‘Spitfire Restaurant’ at the RSA. Over seventy of us attended and ate a very tasty and plentiful two course lunch. Our coffee mornings are also well attended with around 26 going each month. If there are five Wednesdays in a month then we have an informal lunch at a local Nth Canty restaurant. Our mini-speaker talks are always interesting and varied and this one was no exception. He took us on a business trip he did in 1970 after he had been married for four years and with his wife expecting their 3rd! He and another staff member were travelling for Otis Elevator Co, and their 1st stop was Singapore. His 1st impression was that it smelled of ‘curried diesel’! Their hotel was only $5 a night 48 years ago, but, the air conditioning was very noisy and if turned off it was too hot! He was very impressed by the underground trains and old Kyoto. They visited the Emperor’s palace which was built around a man-made lake 1040 years ago. It is kept in original condition. They were hosted around old and new Kyoto by Otis office juniors who were extremely generous. Their next stop was Seoul and unfortunately, he had to finish his talk here. He did tell us that he had written many letters to his wife who had not got them They were found in the hotel post box having never been collected! We are hoping he will be back to continue this very interesting talk. Anne from RGA, CAB was our guest speaker last month. She has been with Page 20 THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2018
the Bureau 9 years, doing several jobs such as information person and three years as president. CAB began in England in WW2 to help find lost relations and friends. It began in RGA in the 1970s and there are bureaus from Kerikeri to Invercargill. RGA is one of the offices that is locked into the 0800 number and so can take calls from all over NZ when the smaller offices are closed. Bureaus have the same information plus their own local knowledge. All the staff, bar one, in RGA are volunteers. They must be impartial, and all calls are free and confidential. Some people just want to talk, and no problem is too big or too small. They have website that has around 1.5 million visits annually and you can email them. They do a lot of work with migrants, have a free legal advice clinic once a fortnight and take bookings from St John’s Health shuttle amongst many other things. They take calls on consumer and community issues, employment and family problems. One interesting idea she gave us was that if you no longer have a driver’s licence you can get the 18+ card for identification purposes! A talk full of interest and information.

WOODEND-SEFTON COMMUNITY BOARD Gladstone Park It is working well but more is coming. The final stages of the redevelopment of Gladstone Park will be underway shortly, including: • The development of new sports fields north of the tennis courts. If all goes well the new fields will be ready by the start of next year’s rugby season. This field development will create a flat playable surface for sports (including irrigation) and it will be up to the individual clubs to provide the infrastructure such as cricket nets, goal posts, artificial turf, etc. • The playground will be expanded, and new equipment has been ordered. • A path from the car park across to the dog park will be constructed. • Nine trees will be planted in the dog park. These will be a combination of Eucalyptus, Cedar and Quercus ilex. All three species have shown to grow well in the area and will provide good shade to dog park users. Next step in joining the Woodend and Pegasus Water Supplies The proposal to join the supplies was widely supported during consultation in 2016, with 73% of residents giving the project the thumbs up. Part of this is a new pipe alignment along the western edge of Gladstone Park. In April the Board supported the option to remove the large pine trees rather than run the pipe alongside the sports fields. The Gladstone Park Advisory Group also preferred this option. The existing row of smaller trees will remain. The tree felling is expected to be completed in early September. For your safety please do not enter the work area and follow all instructions from the contractor. Council’s Water Asset Manager Colin Roxburgh says all residents on the supply should see improvements. “The manganese removal at Pegasus will be better than currently provided to the Woodend Supply. Page 24 THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2018
The combined water supply will also be more resilient than the two individual ones because there are shared back-up sources, storage and pumping facilities”. Work to construct the new pipeline is expected to be completed by June 2019. July meeting update • Updates on roading projects priorities within the area was provided. • An overview of the recently released District Development Strategy was provided, focusing on the Board area, including the forecast growth in the area and Woodend Bypass matters. • The Board heard a passionate plea from a family to have griselinia bushes removed from the public strip in front of their property in Pegasus. The Board debated this over some time especially as the removal of the shrubs would be inconsistent with Council’s Tree Policy. The residents said that their lake view was affected. It was a tight decision, with the motion to remove the shrubs and for suitable replacements with the cost met by the property owner passing with three votes to two, and two abstentions. Ravenswood Section Titles Due The sections in Stage 1A of the Ravenswood development will be issued with titles in late September next, according to Hetty van Hale of the development company. This is significant for Woodend in that this first batch of home sites will form a direct westward extension of the township. When Stage 1B comes on stream in the first half of 2019 there will be a total of nearly 200 housing lots adding to the town’s footprint. Stage 1B will also contain a 16-lot showroom village, and fully take up the development’s frontage to RangioraWoodend Road.

Keeping a flowing rhythm from one exercise to the next. - Yoga based stretch focuses even more on lengthening and strengthening the muscles while holding each pose a bit longer to deepen the stretch, keeping the breath soft and flowing. Both are working on keeping your body and mind connected, as we only get the most out of every exercise if we are able to be mindful in every pose and with every move. By doing this we ensure we are always listening to our body and never force it into a pose or stretch if it doesn't feel right. Classes are run in the Woodend Methodist church hall and in the Pegasus community centre. All classes are 60min long. Next 10-week block starts from Monday 13th August until Thursday 18th October. Casual classes are $13 or $110 for the 10-week block paid at the first class. I have beginner, intermediate and advanced Pilates classes in the morning and evening and beginner, mixed level and more advanced yoga-based stretch classes. For the full timetable check out www.facebook.com/Pilates-For-You-831636133564826/, email me at pilatesforyou.alexandra@gmail.com or call me on 021 044 3208. THE WOODPECKER AUGUST 2018 Page 27

Any queries phone Ruth 312 2094 or Evelyn 312 7740. Free entry. Gold coin donation for afternoon tea. Woodend Breakfast Church was held recently and was a great success. For the first time we had a ‘cook’ and he produced a very scrumptious breakfast with a few courses if you so wished. Bev Alexander’s speech on protecting our local bird species was so informative. Most of us had no idea that we had so many beautiful birds so close to us on the Ashley River and Estuary.
